Das Weihnachsgeschäft wird den Kurs beflügel. Habe erste Position aufgebaut.

U.S. Navy Wins Government Agency Award for Innovative Palm OS Based Application
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) today announced that one of its customers, the U.S. Navy, has been recognized with a Government Agency Award for its innovative use of Palm(TM) handheld computers to grade pilot landings aboard aircraft carriers. Sponsored by Post Newsweek Tech Media Group, a division of The Washington Post Company, the 10th annual Government Agency Awards honor government agencies that have a demonstrated record of excellence in applying information technology.
"The Navy`s use of handheld computers in a critical carrier-landing application demonstrated creative thinking that improved the quality of work done by the landing signal officers while ensuring better mission delivery -- all on a small budget," said Thomas R. Temin, editorial director, Government Computer News, owned by Post Newsweek Tech Media Group.
Landing Signal Officers (LSOs) aboard Navy aircraft carriers are responsible for grading and evaluating each aircraft landing for safety and accuracy. The software developers, Ken Schneider and Michael LaPaglia, are two naval aviators who applied their own programming skills to improve the existing LSO grading process. To eliminate an antiquated data-collection process once completed with a paper notebook and pen, the officers developed a software application called PASS. The application runs on Palm handhelds and allows LSOs to electronically grade by pilot and aircraft, and to input comments for each landing.
Previously, grades from a paper notebook were manually re-entered into a PC database, resulting in redundant work and inefficient use of time. With PASS, LSOs eliminate hours of redundant data entry by electronically capturing the landing data and then uploading the information directly from the handheld to the Navy network via a simple HotSync(R) operation. Additionally, the software helps increase overall flight-deck safety due to the reduced time commitment necessary for data entry between successive landings.
"Since the first versions appeared in 1999, the PASS application has been perfected and distributed throughout naval aviation," said Kyra Hawn, spokesperson for the Pacific Fleet naval air force. "Today, this software is part of the official curriculum for Landing Signal Officers` training. The system has eliminated much of the tedious paperwork that used to occupy officers for hours. Everyone associated with this project should be proud of their contribution, and we thank Post Newsweek Tech Media Group for recognizing Navy innovators."
"This award confirms that handheld computers have moved beyond their original purpose as personal information managers," said John Inkley, federal sales manager at Palm, Inc. "What started as a grass-roots phenomenon, by two officers working on their own, has extended to enterprise acceptance. Palm applauds the Navy`s innovative spirit and highly successful handheld implementation."
Judges for the 2001 Agency Awards included a panel of editors from Government Computer News, who yearly report on and review hundreds of government IT applications. Winners were chosen based upon their ability to do the following:
-- Support new or changed program or policy requirements;
-- Improve management or IT operation;
-- Improve services delivery;
-- Demonstrate innovation in the application of information technology;
and
-- Demonstrate the impact/significance of the accomplishment to the
agency, to other government organizations, and/or the public.

Bluetooth, an international standard for short-range wireless data communications, allows devices to communicate and share data without the use of wires. Together with infrared (IrDA), Bluetooth will enable Palm handheld users to interact with a variety of devices, creating innovative Personal Area Networks. Users of Palm handhelds equipped with Broadcom`s Bluetooth chips will be able to synchronize their handhelds and send documents to a Bluetooth-enabled printer without having to connect to a docking station or other wired interface. Bluetooth-equipped Palm handhelds also can be combined with Bluetooth phones to provide high-speed wireless access to email, the Internet or a corporate data network while on the road or outside the office. Bluetooth will allow these interactions to take place without a line-of-sight connection, enabling synchronization and downloads at data rates approaching 1 megabit per second (Mb/s), even while devices are stowed in a briefcase or laptop bag.
``As the recognized leader in the handheld market, Palm`s continued commitment to Bluetooth provides a vital piece of the Personal Area Network,`` said Jeff Thermond, vice president and general manager for Broadcom`s Home Networking Business Unit. ``Palm`s selection of Broadcom`s Bluetooth technology demonstrates our leadership in providing high-performance silicon and system solutions to the short-range wireless marketplace.``
The Blutonium family of products consists of Bluetooth Qualification Board (BQB) Version 1.1-qualified single-chip system solutions as well as stand-alone radios, which provide high-performance connectivity for short-range wireless data communications. The single-chip Broadcom® BCM2033 is optimized for use in handheld computers, mobile phone handsets and laptop computers. As part of the new collaboration, Broadcom and Palm will design a wireless solution for a future Palm handheld using the BCM2033.
``Palm handhelds adhere to highly restrictive space and power requirements in order to optimize size and battery life,`` said Angel Mendez, senior vice president of Global Operations at Palm, Inc. ``Broadcom`s Bluetooth products are a best-value solution meeting our cost, size, performance and power requirements, while also meeting Bluetooth specifications.``
Among wireless standards, Bluetooth is uniquely suited to add full-featured wireless connectivity to handheld devices without changing existing usage models. Because Bluetooth has a low impact on handheld battery life, the breadth of applications offered by adding wireless connectivity comes without compromising the user experience. The short-range omni-directional Bluetooth standard will provide the ability for collaboration and sharing of personal information data, as well as seamless connections to the Internet, without compromising battery life.

The assumption since Sept. 11 was that security would be the focal point of technology spending. It is, but just not as feverishly as investors priced into the stocks.
RSA Securities (RSAS: news, chart, profile) plunged 26 percent to $12.42; VeriSign (VRSN: news, chart, profile) lost 11 percent to $33.
Late Thursday, RSA reported a fourth-quarter operating profit that topped breakeven expectations, but came in below revenue forecasts. The company provided a 2002 outlook that was in line with current expectations and said the SEC is making an inquiry regarding its first-quarter 2001 filing.
VeriSign gave up ground after the provider of security technology and domain-name registry reported sales that fell below fourth-quarter revenue goals and said 2002 earnings would be well below analysts` expectations.
VeriSign said it would earn $1 per share in 2002. Analysts expected the company to earn $1.20.
VeriSign`s news came late Thursday, but the market had been expecting the company to get real with the numbers well ahead of Thursday`s report. The stock has fallen 28 percent over the past three months vs. an 11 percent gain in its industry group and a 12 percent gain in the Nasdaq. See Net Stocks.
VeriSign should have taken a free pass in September, when most companies opted to lower their expectations. "VeriSign stayed firm on its guidance since September while most of the security companies lowered," said Stephan Mahedy, an analyst at Salomon Smith Barney.
With the exception of VeriSign, Internet security was one of the best performing sectors in technology since autumn, partly on the increased awareness that Sept. 11 would ignite demand for security.
But RSA Securities and VeriSign are the latest to show weak results relative to expectations. Earlier in the week, Entrust (ENTU: news, chart, profile) saw shares clipped by 28 percent following the company`s weaker-than-expected goals.
Palm`s `handsome` mystery device
It`s no secret that Palm (PALM: news, chart, profile) is set to announce a new wireless product before the end of the month.
The formal unveiling of the new product is expected to be as early as Monday, said Brian Blair, of New York-based hedge fund Bluewater Capital.
The new device is called the I705 and it`s an enhanced version of Palm`s current wireless device. The cost is set for $449. Late Thursday, Palm sent out an e-mail about its device to existing Palm users. "It`s handsome. It`s wireless. It`s lightweight," according to the e-mail. But how significant is this new product?
"There will be enthusiasm for the product from Palm loyalists," said Blair. "But it doesn`t appear to be anything new. There will be a segment that won`t like it because you can`t talk into it."
Handspring (HAND: news, chart, profile) has the Treo which is currently shipping in limited markets in Europe and it`s expected in retail stores across the U.S. in March. The product is $399 to the consumer if they sign up for one year`s service from Cingular Wireless. It costs $549 for consumers who already have a wireless service provider.
The Treo is essentially a phone with Internet browsing and e-mail access. Research In Motion (RIMM: news, chart, profile) is expected to have a voice-integrated Blackberry available in the U.S. later this year. See full story.

ben.
Nun, all dies geschah Ende der 90iger, also schon vor 10 Jahren.
wesentlich guenstiger, somit konnte Handspring vergleichbare Ge-
lung neuer Produkte einbezogen. So kamen insbesondere vom Manage-
Motorola sitzt in Warteposition.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Palm Inc.`s share of the hand-held computer market tumbled in 2001 but the company remained dominant, withstanding gains by rivals Compaq Computer and Hewlett-Packard, a study found.
Research firm Dataquest said last week that Palm`s slice of the global market for personal digital assistants, the popular pocket-sized information-management tools, fell to 38.6% in 2001 from 50.4% in 2000.
Palm shipped 5.1 million units, more than three times the total of its nearest competitor. But shipments in 2001 were off from 5.6million in 2000. "It was a difficult year for Palm," Gartner Dataquest analyst Todd Kort said. "But considering that they owned the market for several years and that serious competition has finally arrived, it is not a surprise that they would be losing some 10 points in market share from one year to the next."

Also vorweg, hab auch einige Stücke.

India`s "poor-friendly" Simputer set for May rollout
By Anshuman Daga
BANGALORE, March 6 (Reuters) - A low-cost handheld computer developed by seven Indian engineers to take the Internet to rural masses will start rolling out in May, the head of a firm pioneering the project said.
The ``Simputer``, short for Simple, Inexpensive, Multilingual, is championed by its followers as a friend of the poor, but some of its supporters add that its features match cool and trendy handhelds like those built by Palm Inc (NasdaqNM:PALM - news).
Originally expected to cost $200, it would now cost $50 more, Vinay Deshpande, chief executive of Bangalore-based Encore Software Ltd, told Reuters on Wednesday.
The colour screen version is priced at $300.
``We hope to produce 50,000 Simputers in the first 12 months and take it to 300,000-500,000 in two years,`` Deshpande said.
Built by the non-profit Simputer Trust, the device is slightly larger than a regular handheld PC, and uses the free-to-use Linux operating system.
Its software is expected to aid farmers seeking to know commodity prices and beat middlemen and also provide speech recognition in regional languages to help illiterate rural folk.
At $250, the Simputer will be three times cheaper than a PC, and cost about the same as a colour TV set, a price level which is expected to help spread computers to the corners of India, two-thirds of whose one billion people live in rural areas.
India`s current installed base of computers is around six million.
``We have orders for 1,000 Simputers from firms in healthcare and co-operative banking including few state governments,`` said Deshpande, whose firm is one of the two key licence holders of the Simputer.
Deshpande and two of Encore`s other co-founders are part of the Simputer Trust, which developed the device with a group of computer scientists from Bangalore`s prestigious Indian Institute of Science.
The Simputer hooks up to the Internet and accommodates individual smart cards which store personal data to allow it be be shared by many users. The software also translates English and regional language text into speech.
Encore is initially targetting the institutional and corporate market instead of tapping retail users which requires large marketing investments, Deshpande said.
``We are currently working to make enhancements like giving it an international style, greater memory and stronger battery power,`` he said. The device was first unveiled last April.
Encore has given contracts to two Bangalore-based companies to manufacture the Simputer and formed a joint venture with a Singapore-based company to market the device in Asia.

50,000 hectares of oil palm is to be cultivated in Sierra Leone This, according to Agriculture Specialists, will be the biggest oil palm plantation that would be established as a hectare of land is equal to 10,000 square metres.
Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources, Okere Adams confirmed to Concord Times over the weekend that he was recently in Egypt where he held a meeting with that country`s Agriculture Minister who is also the deputy prime minister, the chairman of the Agricultural Development Bank of Egypt and a company called El-hosan.
He said the company which is well established in countries like Congo, Ghana and Guinea would be exporting the palm oil and noted that they would be providing employment.
"All farmers within this 50,000 hectares would be provided agricultural equipment and all other inputs," he said.
The plantation would be cultivated near Freetown, but will cover other areas in the country.
"In addition to the oil palm," the minister said " the company will also go into animal husbandry. We lost most of our live stock during the war but these people intend to ensure that we have enough animals in the country. " Adams said the company has invited the Minister of Trade to Egypt to see what other investment they may go into.
"I feel proud and good that we are having such a project as we begin to rebuild our country after over ten years of war," he said.
The Company`s PRO in Sierra Leone, Hamed El Agamy told Concord Times that they were very happy to come and help the country.

Research in Motion (RIMM:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis) ripped off its tie, abandoned the office and headed out for gold rush territory.
The wireless email pioneer is worshiped for its addictive devices such as the BlackBerry, but with fewer than 300,000 corporate customers under its belt, the neighboring mobile-phone market that ships 400 million handsets a year became too hard to resist. After years spent focusing more on corporate server support than on the convergence that is morphing mobile phones into personal digital assistants and vice versa, RIM is ready to cash in, and not a moment too soon for investors.
Over the past two years, competitors Microsoft (MSFT:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis) and Palm (PALM:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis) realized that as mobile phones incorporate more PDA functions, a huge new market lay before them, if they could just get their operating systems installed in the new handsets.
A week ago, RIM signaled a similar change of mind, opening up its software bounty to third-party mobile phone and PDA manufacturers for licensing, following its 2001 move to the more neutral Java mobile platform.
Thursday, the company announced its first partner, Analog Devices (ADI:NYSE - news - commentary - research - analysis), which will make an all-in-one chip to handle RIM`s Java and proprietary needs for whatever device maker wants to offer BlackBerry capabilities. RIM has got a lot of territory to make up on Microsoft and Palm, which can explore the combination PDA/phone device realm with large accumulated bands of application developers. With just a chip to attach to its effort so far, RIM investors kept calm in Thursday trading, with shares closing up 2% at $26.52.
"When Nokia signs up, I`ll get excited," says Tom Sepenzis, an analyst with CIBC World Markets. Wall Street believes RIM has a high-quality radio to license to partners, but time will tell which handset makers consider the BlackBerry pager-type functionality essential. Email is expected to join text messaging as one of the popular early applications offered on the new higher-speed wireless networks being rolled out this year and next in the U.S.
RIM competitors Palm and Microsoft are already gallivanting into mobile-phone territory with new caller-friendly versions of their PDA operating systems. RIM`s arrival in the combination mobile phone/PDA market makes it the fourth well-known operating system provider, behind Symbian (backed by the big handset makers), Palm and Microsoft`s PocketPC.
Additionally, each company is encroaching on RIM`s familiar territory with always-connected email support this summer. RIM holds that it`s miles ahead of rivals, but with only 289,000 subscribers at the end of the quarter ended Dec. 1, 2001, it`s time for RIM to introduce its proprietary greatness to a wider audience before the carpetbaggers do.
"RIM`s OS is OK, but it`s got the best email program you`re going to find. There`s nothing I`ve seen that touches it," says Bluewater Capital`s Brian Blair. "This opens the door for handset manufacturers to look at the opportunity to incorporate BlackBerry."
Blair expects RIM to unveil consumer-style devices this summer, and he believes that outside vendors will be able to lower prices on RIM devices and make them affordable. The Canadian company manufactures its BlackBerry devices, and although it recently brought a new facility on line, a big partners` manufacturing prowess would be key to reaching a larger audience.
RIM isn`t the only company with proprietary technology that is making the adjustment. Mobile-phone giants such as Nokia (NOK:NYSE ADR - news - commentary - research - analysis), Ericsson (ERICY:Nasdaq ADR - news - commentary - research - analysis) and Motorola (MOT:NYSE - news - commentary - research - analysis) have conceded that as generic phone makers build cheap models in China and beyond, vendors are best served by licensing their hardware technology for extra revenue. Motorola still will sell millions of phones a year, but it wants a slice of the revenue on millions more.
"I wish they did this two years ago," Sepenzis says. "These days, he who licenses his technology the most wins."
RIM announced a general packet radio service phone in March to be released at a later date, which means Nokia and Motorola will have their first third-generation handsets out about the same time (albeit for operation on more complicated networks that could face significant glitches). RIM still has time to catch up, but it`s a good thing it`s finally scouting some partners before the bonanza passes it by.

Palm Sees Loss, Demand Lags Expectations
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Reuters) - Handheld computer maker Palm Inc.(NasdaqNM:PALM - News) on Thursday cut its outlook, saying it would report a loss in the current quarter and that revenue would lag expectations since spring demand "did not materialize as expected".
Santa Clara, California-based Palm said it would not meet its break-even profitability expectations for the fiscal fourth quarter, which ends May 31, and that revenue would be approximately $230 million, compared with the previously expected $290 million to $300 million.
Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had expected Palm to report revenue of $297 million and earnings per share between a 1-cent gain and a 1-cent loss, with the consensus a 1-cent loss.
"Market conditions deteriorated compared to both the year-ago quarter and recent months," Eric Benhamou, chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement. He added, "We expect to report improved gross margins, excellent expense management and a good cash position."

Palm Plans Reverse Stock Split
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Reuters) - Palm Inc.(NasdaqNM:PALM - News), a maker of handheld computers whose shares once traded at $100 but are now below $1.50, said on Friday it plans to enact a reverse stock split, a move companies commonly use to boost stock prices.
The Santa Clara, California-based company said its board approved a plan that would give it the right to split at a ratio ranging from one-for-10 to one-for-20. The split could come at any time prior to April 1, 2003.
Palm, the No. 1 handheld computer maker, said the proposal would help position Palm for its impending separation of PalmSource, the company`s software subsidiary.
The plan must be approved by Palm shareholders, who meet at its annual meeting on Oct. 1. As of May 31, Palm had some 579.2 million shares of common stock outstanding.
Palm shares, which traded over $100 at its initial public offering in March 2000, have languished below $2 a share since May, when it pushed back hopes of an operating profit until later this year. The stock closed on Friday at $1.36, down 8 cents.

Standard & Poor`s says to drop Palm from index
NEW YORK, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Standard & Poor`s on Wednesday said it would drop handheld device maker Palm Inc. (NasdaqNM:PALM - News) from its benchmark S&P 500 index (CBOE:^SPX - News) after the close of trading on Aug. 13.
New York-based S&P said Palm would be replaced in the index by Monsanto Co. (NYSE:MON - News), which makes and provides agricultural products.
The S&P cited Palm`s market capitalization, which it said ranked No. 496 out of the 500 index companies, and its low share price as some reasons for the move.
Last month, Palm said it planned to seek approval for a reverse stock split to shore up its trading price. Shares in companies dropped from the S&P 500 usually decline because fund managers often have to dump the shares in favor of the newly-added company to balance their portfolios.
Shares in Palm closed down 3 percent at 98 cents on Nasdaq, while Monsanto shares closed up 1.3 percent at $15.95.

hab heute nochmal gekauft.
also nichts existenzbedrohendes im moment.

was meint ihr?

A man was walking in the city, when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking bum who asked him for a couple of dollars for dinner.
The man took out his wallet, extracted two dollars and asked, "If I gave you this money, will you take it and buy whiskey?"
"No, I stopped drinking years ago," the bum said.
"Will you use it to gamble & buy Palm shares going long?"
"I don`t gamble. I need everything I can get just to stay alive."
"Will you spend the money on greens fees at a golf course?"
"Are you NUTS! I haven`t played golf in 20 years!"
The man said, "Well, I`m not going to give you two dollars. Instead, I`m going to take you to my home for a terrific dinner cooked by my wife."
The bum was astounded.
"Won`t your wife be furious with you for doing that? I know I`m dirty, and I probably smell pretty bad."
The man replied, "Hey, man, that`s OK! I just want her to see what a man looks like who`s given up drinking, gambling on the Palm, and golf!"
