Siebel falls on Lehman note on Oracle competition
NEW YORK, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Shares of customer service software maker Siebel Systems Inc. <SEBL.O> fell sharply on Wednesday, after an executive from rival Oracle Corp. <ORCL.O> told a Lehman Brothers analyst Oracle would move more aggressively into the market for customer relationship management software.

Shares of Siebel fell nearly 8 percent, or 13-1/4 to 158-3/4, making it the biggest net loser on Nasdaq.

"Last night we held a dinner with Mark Barrenches who runs Oracle`s R&D for customer relationship management (CRM)," Lehman analyst Neil Herman wrote in a note to clients. "In a major strike at Siebel, Oracle is set to launch a free, hosted version of its sales force automation offering, with other CRM revenue opportunities surrounding that solution."

However, other analysts said that Siebel has a significant technological lead in customer relationship management, and that the push by Oracle would not affect Siebel`s core business of providing that software to big business.

"The work we`ve done has indicated Siebel has a substantial product lead in CRM, and Oracle is 12-16 months behind on functionality," said Wit Soundview analyst Matt Luckett.

"With this (Oracle`s) hosted model, pricing will be a factor in the low end of the game," he added. "It`s not really going to be a strategy for Oracle to sell into this low end of the market and then move into selling software to large businesses for millions. So this is not going to impact the core market for Siebel." Oracle shares fell 1-5/8 to 81-15/16 on Nasdaq.
