MAJOR NORDIC INITIATIVE WITH TELENOR

Yes Television plc and Telenor announce that the two companies have signed a letter of intent to deliver a "total television" interactive service throughout the Nordic region.

The commercial framework will involve the establishment of a joint venture company that will operate the service in the Nordic region. Yes Television will provide software and associated applications for a VOD service, whilst Telenor will provide the broadband cable network for distribution and content.

Thomas Kressner, Chairman and CEO of Yes Television, commented:

"This is an exciting development for us in a region where customers expect the highest quality technology. We are delighted that we are the partner of choice and we will have the opportunity to develop this "total television" service with Telenor over their broadband networks."

Stig Eide Sivertsen, CEO of Telenor Broadband Services, commenting from Telenor said:

"We have in Yes Television the leading service provider of VOD and interactive programming and look forward to developing with them a framework for interactive total television throughout the Nordic region. The co-operation with Yes Television will also strengthen and complete our existing operation in the Nordic region."

Obulus - die Meldung stammt vom April und wurde hier am board bereits 4x diskutiert.

Yes Television ist ein britisches Unternehmen. Ausdrücklich wurde in der Meldung zum LoI nur von den skandinavischen Ländern gesprochen.

Es gibt keine, aber auch gar keinen Hinweis daruf, dass yes bei IN dabei sein könnte.

Soviel dazu.

Das die MEldung von April ist heißt ja nichts.

Es war ja wahrscheinlich eh so das zuerst die anderen Firmen sich zusammen geschlossen haben und dann nach einer Box gesucht haben.

Yes Television - VOD and Internet over cable and ADSL
We visited Yes Television at the "company flat" in the Chiswick section of West London, so we could see the live service they are operating as a pilot market trial with BT. Steve Garvey, Yes Television Head of Marketing, demonstrated the services and shared his thoughts on the company`s current work and future plans.

Their co-branded "BT Yes Television" service has true video on demand (VOD), email and open Internet access. The system operates through a digital set-top box to the customer`s TV, and uses an ADSL modem carrying MPEG-coded video at 2.3 Mbps over TCP/IP (similar to a VOD trial in the early 1990s by Bell Atlantic).

The BT Yes Television pilot, available in two sections of West London, is intended to reach 400 homes, and is scheduled to run "until at least the end of September." Their attractive VOD service includes a wide range of films, TV hits, and music videos, well packaged in a slick magazine-format guide. Pricing is 15 pounds (about $23) per month for the "basic" service, and 20 pounds (about $30) for the "Entertainment Package" which includes two movies a month. Current movie titles are 3 pounds (about $4.50) each.

Unfortunately, BT`s ADSL pricing structure puts the economics of this business wildly out of whack. YesTV can`t scale up the business when the costs for providing the service (mostly payments to BT) far exceed what it is charging for it.

Full-screen television requires at least 2 Mbps for reasonable "VCR-like" quality. BT has been loath to offer a consumer-priced ADSL service at this speed for fear of cannibalizing its revenue from E1 private line services. Until competition forces a radical downward revision in ADSL pricing, and an upward revision in speed, it will not be economically feasible to offer VOD over ADSL in the UK. Most UK observers believe that this will not happen until the UK market is opened to competition during the summer of 2001. Thus the trial is mainly for Yes Television and BT to gather marketing information on usage and pricing, not in preparation for a near-term service rollout.

With much of its home market effectively blocked by BT`s ADSL pricing, Yes Television is targeting other markets. It recently announced plans to offer its "Total Television" product (which adds broadcast TV to the VOD and Internet services) in Ireland, Iceland, France, and the Nordic region. These will use a variety of broadband access technologies, including ADSL (at 2 to 5 mbps), cable, and fiber optics. Like many service providers, bundled services are the goal toward which Yes Television is moving.

Hier eine ganz frische Pressemeldung von heute morgen, trifft Metabox nicht direkt, zeigt aber dass Telenor und Ericsson auf jeden Fall zusammenarbeiten. Ericsson will ja mit Lina.net in Island die Bevölkerung verkabeln und Telenor wird ja haeufig hier in den Threads als ein potentieller Teil des Inter-nordic genannt.

Telenor and Ericsson sign UMTS contract

(Oslo, 18 December 2000)Telenor has signed a contract securing Ericsson as its main supplier during the development process of Telenor`s UMTS network in Norway.

Managing Director, Ingvild Myhre of Telenor Mobil says; -We are certain that our choice of supplier is the right one although it was not an altogether obvious decision. Alternative suppliers also presented substantially good offers. We decided upon Ericsson based on an overall evaluation of price, technology and the company’s ability to deliver. Furthermore, Ericsson has an extremely high level of competence within this field in this Norway.

Framework Agreement
The contract between Telenor Mobil and Ericsson is a framework agreement with a potential value ranging in the billions. The deal defines Ericsson as the total supplier, meaning that the company will supply a complete UMTS network with base stations and central units within a specified time period next year. Demand for further supplies will depend on concrete advancement plans and the development in the market development. Telenor Mobil remains open to engaged additional suppliers, as was the case during the development of the GSM network.

Telenor Mobil and Ericsson will also be working together on the development of applications and service platforms designed to give the new network content. This part of the deal is not exclusive, leaving Telenor Mobil open to a variety of services and suppliers.

Autumn Launch
This early selection of the supplier should allow Telenor Mobil to be quick off the mark in introducing services in the market. The domestic network will serve as Telenor’s testing, ground paving the way for development of international interests in the future.

The development is scheduled to begin in the first two quarters of 2001, and the network is planned to be launched by November 2001. By then close to 170,000 Norwegians will have coverage in their local areas. Within five years all densely populated areas will have full coverage. The third generation network will interact closely with the GPRS network which opens early next year. Most of the services will be designed to work on both networks whilst utilising the characteristic qualities of the individual networks to their full potential.

Ich nochmal. Ich habe mir die Muehe gemacht eine Firma anzurufen, die an der iaTV-Gesichte in Island eine grosse Rolle spielt. Der Typ am Telephon hat mir tatsaechlich einige Informationen gegeben, was den Aufbau des Netzes betrifft und ich habe auch relativ direkt gefragt. Ich habe z.B. nach dem Internordic gefragt und er konnte sich an den Namen erinnern, nach einiger Zeit fragte er mich "hat das was mit Metabox zu tun?". Ich meinte ja und er sagte die haetten ihn schon angesprochen und seine Dienste angeboten. Von deren Konzept hielt er aber nicht viel, meinte das Konsortium haette finanzielle Probleme und deren Technik wohl nicht ganz so gut wie die von seinen Partner waere.
Meine Meinung nach dem Gespraech ist: Metabox hat wohl (leider) nichts mit dem aufbau von Lina.net und Ericsson in Island zu tun. Damit faellt wohl Yes Television auch aus dem Spiel.

finanzielle Probleme hat.
Ich heiße ab morgen "Norwegia" und werde dann aus Norwegen berichten!

Ich sehe mein Posting war etwas verwirrend. Ich wollte das Produkt Metabox nicht schlecht reden und auch nicht behaupten dass Metabox oder Internordic in finanziellen Schwierigkeiten steckt. Ich hoffe auch nicht da ich einen recht grossen Anteil an Metabox Aktien besitze. Was ich nach dem Gespraech aber denke ist:

Da diese Firma (Gagnamidlun) wohl zusammen mit Lina.net das iaTV in Island aufbauen und ab Maerz 2001 anbieten möchte, Lina.net wiederum mit Ericsson einen Vertrag hat denke ich ist Metabox wohl bei diesen Firmen nicht mit dabei. Was nocht steht ist die Möglichkeit der zusammenarbeit von telnor und yes television.
