also nochmal Oktober 2001 im Kalender festhalten.

JOHANNESBURG – AngloGold chairman and chief executive, Bobby Godsell, believes the deregulation of the Chinese gold market could lead to a 15 percent increment in annual gold demand over a number of years. China is due to open its first gold market in Shanghai, possibly before the year-end. It has already deregulated the retail price of gold. Godsell was speaking on Classic Business, a business radio show in South Africa.
"There`s good progress there (China). The retail price has been deregulated, and that only for a couple of months. We have yet to see the full impact of that and we are hoping by the end of this calendar year that China will open its first gold market where manufacturers and retailers and, indeed, traders will be able to buy and sell gold outside China," he said.
Godsell estimates that the Chinese market could grow in a similar quantum to that of India.
The Indian market recorded a gold offtake of about 200 tons before it was deregulated by the state. However, that market is now worth about 800 tons a year. India has a similar-size market to China but the Chinese market is four times as wealthy in terms of gross domestic profit per capita. "You could see an increment of 600 tons of new demand, that`s pretty strong in a 4000 ton market," Godsell said.
"Up to now, the Chinese market has been regulated as if it was money, and there have been severe restrictions on people importing, exporting, buying, selling and holding gold. So I think the retail price and the opening of the first market, which will be in Shanghai and should by the end of this year, are two very major steps on the way to liberalising that market," Godsell said.
But analysts warned that a number of factors might slow growth in gold jewellery demand in China relative to India. Firstly, there was a cultural gap in consumer taste in China compared to India where gold jewellery is popular. In addition, platinum has a market niche in China and is the favoured metal for jewellery in the short-term. Analysts also worried about the ability to distribute gold supply across China as well as a slowdown in the world economy which may eat into consumer spending.

Also 800 Tonnen Gold sind denn ja bißchen hoch gegriffen.

Shanghai exchange liberalises gold trade
Resources Correspondent
CHINA took another step towards the deregulation of its gold market yesterday when the Shanghai Gold Exchange opened its doors.
The trade was a simulation though, to test the exchange`s electronic trading system.
In the next few months, however, the Chinese gold market will open as a platform for wholesale buyers and sellers of gold with plans in the pipeline for the introduction of "gold futures" trading, the World Gold Council said.
The opening of the exchange is a move away from a gold market which has been state-controlled and closely regulated by the People`s Bank of China for more than fifty years. This role has now been given to the Shanghai Gold Exchange`s 108 members, which include banks, gold mines, refineries, jewellery makers, gold importers, exporters and gold trading companies.
China, which was recently admitted to the World Trade Organisation, is moving towards a more market-orientated system, but Kelvin Williams, marketing director at AngloGold, says it will be a while before producers see a rise in Chinese demand for gold.
"There will not be a big effect on the uptake of gold (as a result of the opening of the exchange) purchasers on the exchange will come from the wholesale end rather than the consumer end."
Williams said the exchange was an important step in liberalising the market, allowing the People`s Bank of China to withdraw from being both a buyer and seller of gold.
More changes in trading laws set for the middle of next year would have a greater effect on gold demand in China, said Williams. The deregulation of the granting of licences is expected in China late next year.
