Korea¡¯s Productivity Growth World¡¯s Highest
By Kim Sung-jin
Staff Reporter
The manufacturing productivity growth rate of South Korea is the highest among developed countries, according to the May 30 edition of the Economist.
According to the British weekly, South Korea¡¯s average manufacturing productivity growth rate between 1995 and 2000 was the world¡¯s highest, nearly double that of Taiwan, Germany, France, Japan, the U.S. and the U.K.
The report said that the annual average manufacturing productivity growth rate of Korea topped 11.5 percent during the six year period, but that of Taiwan stayed at a mere 5.5 percent, the U.S. 4.5 percent, France and Japan each roughly at 4 percent, and Germany and the U.K. at 2.5 percent.
Moreover, Korea¡¯s manufacturing productivity hovered at the 10.5 percent level between 1999 and 2000, while those of Germany and France stood slightly above 6 percent, Japan little more than 5.5 percent, and the U.S., the U.K. and Taiwan at around 5.5 percent.
The Economist calculated the annual national manufacturing productivity growth rate by dividing production output per hour of labor.
``Manufacturing productivity is going to further increase as manufacturing production gradually picks up due to an increase in export demand, and partly due to the five-day workweek that would be applied to the manufacturing sector someday in the future,¡¯¡¯ said a Commerce-Industry-Energy Ministry official.
