Die zweite große Pleite in den USA innerhalb weniger Wochen ist perfekt: Nach dem Energiehändler Enron trifft es nun die Telekommunikationsbranche. Am gestrigen Montag hat Global Crossing, der Betreiber eines weltumspannenden Glasfasernetzes, Gläubigerschutz beantragt. Mit einem Anlagevermögen von 22,4 Mrd. Dollar und 12,4 Mrd. Dollar an Verbindlichkeiten ist die Pleite des ehemaligen Börsenlieblings die viertgrößte aller Zeiten in den USA.

Interessenten, die bereit sind, das angeschlagene Unternehmen zu übernehmen, gibt es bereits. Zum einen ist dies der Telekommunikationsriese Hutchison Whampoa, zum anderen die Singapore Technologies Telemedia. Beide wollen gemeinsam etwa 70 bis 80 Prozent von Global Crossing übernehmen und dafür 750 Mio. Dollar investieren. „Das ist eine vernünftige Investition“, erklärt Hutchisons Geschäftsführer Canning Fok. Die asiatischen Bieter werden sich allerdings noch etwas gedulden müssen. Das zuständige Konkursgericht entscheidet erst im August über den Zuschlag. Weitere Angebote können jederzeit auftauchen.

Auch Fachleute sehen die geplante Beteiligung von Hutchison und Singapore Technologies überwiegend positiv. Analyst Robert Sassoon von SG Securities sieht den Konkurs von Global Crossing als günstige Gelegenheit für Hutchison, das eigene Netzwerk zu ergänzen. „Anleger sehen diese Investition als Meilenstein für Hutchison, um sein eigenes globales Netzwerk zu erweitern und sie müssen nur sehr wenig Geld bezahlen, um diese Investition zu tätigen“, sagt auch Wilson Wong, vom Pegasus Fond in Hong Kong.

Zu der Krise bei Global Crossing ist es durch die aggressive Expansionspolitik des Unternehmens gekommen, die hohe Investitionen nach sich gezogen, aber die nur eine unzureichende Nachfrage generiert hat. Die Idee eines globalen Hochgeschwindigkeitsnetzes haben neben Global Crossing auch andere Anbieter wie 360networks gehabt, so dass hohe Kapazitäten unausgelastet geblieben sind und die genutzten nur zu niedrigen Preisen verkauft werden konnten.

Der ehemalige High-Flyer notiert zum Handelsschluss am Montag mit einem Abschlag von 40 Prozent bei 0,3 Dollar. Im Mai 1999 notierte die Aktie noch bei 64,25 Dollar.

Dear Investor,

Global Crossing has signed a letter of intent with Hutchison Whampoa Limited and Singapore Technologies Telemedia Pte. Ltd. for a $750 million equity investment in the Company in connection with a restructuring of the company`s balance sheet.

This investment will result in a worldwide alliance with Global Crossing-positioning three key telecommunications participants to reap the benefits of today`s and tomorrow`s digital economy. Ultimately, this investment represents a sponsorship and reaffirmation of Global Crossing`s business plan.

This investment is conditional, among other things, upon the confirmation of a plan of reorganization by the courts before the end of August 2002; creditors would share in a combination of cash, new debt, and new equity in the restructured company. Existing common equity and preferred shareholders would not participate in the new capital structure.

In order to begin the restructuring process, Global Crossing and certain of its affiliates commenced Chapter 11 cases in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York and coordinated proceedings in the Supreme Court of Bermuda.

The Chapter 11 filing does not mean that Global Crossing is going out of business. Reorganization under Chapter 11 gives the Company the time to restructure its balance sheet and take the steps necessary to restore financial stability while continuing normal day-to-day operations without any interruption in service.

In five years, Global Crossing has built the world`s most extensive fiber optic network. In the last year or so, despite the weakening economy and slow-down of the telecommunications sector in general, the Company has been able to grow its commercial and data business, but has been challenged by a general erosion in the wholesale IRU carrier market. Despite the Company`s best efforts to reduce costs and maximize cash flow, management decided to use the Chapter 11 process as the most efficient reorganization tool.

Global Crossing`s current leadership team is expected to remain intact while the Company works with the Bankruptcy Court and Global Crossing`s leading creditors through the reorganization process.

Interest payments on Global Crossing bonds will be suspended throughout the Chapter 11 process, and the amount of interest that is ultimately paid, if any, will also be determined through the Chapter 11 process.
