Der Softbank-Chef Masayoshi Son wird nächste Woche der reichste Mann der Welt!
      Aus der Financial Times:

Masayoshi Son: The right touch at Softbank
By Rebecca Knight and Mariko Sanchanta - 18 Feb 2000 23:32GMT

For years, comparisons have been drawn between Softbank`s CEO Masayoshi Son and Bill Gates, the king of Microsoft. After all, both sweater-clad CEOs have youthful looks, quiet voices and lead multi-billion dollar technology companies.

The similarities don`t end there. Mr Son may be about to challenge Mr Gates` position as the richest man in the world. The Japanese internet entrepreneur`s 38.2 per cent stake in Softbank is now worth $70bn, while Gates` 15 per cent stake in Microsoft is worth $79bn.

Mr Son is an anomaly in Japan - a technological visionary not afraid to shake up the country`s consensus-driven business network. He introduced his own entrepeneurial style with the dream of making Softbank the leading player in every major internet technology.

Mr Son, an ethnic Korean, grew up in the small town of Tosu on Kyushu, Japan`s southernmost main island. Mr Son`s family changed their surname to Yasumoto to assimilate themselves into Japanese society, where there is considerable prejudice against non-native Japanese.

His father owned a small but prosperous pachinko parlor. The family moved into town in order to pursue a better education for the children, four boys. Mr Son was accepted into one of Japan`s best high schools, in Fukuoka. At 16, however, he moved to the US - in part to escape prejudice against his Korean background - and graduated from high school unusually early, thanks to his rigorous Japanese education.

He attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he invented the prototype for the Sharp Wizard, a handheld electronic organiser. Sharp paid him $1m for his patent, and after graduation, Mr Son returned to Japan.

Mr Son was on an entrepreneurial roll: in 1981, the precocious 28 year-old founded Softbank, a software distribution company. His vision, for Softbank to provide the infrastructure for the digital information age, was grandiose.

But back in the day when the term "venture capitalist" prompted blank looks, it was Mr Son`s charisma that eventually persuaded a skeptical bank manager at Dai-ichi Kangyo bank to lend him $750,000 dollars to start his business.

Softbank went public in 1994, rapidly making Mr Son a millionaire. In 1996, he bought 30 per cent of Yahoo! which gave Softbank a growing internet presence. In late 1997, after concerns about Softbank`s rapid growth led to rumours that the company might go bankrupt, the company`s share price plummeted, and Mr Son was forced to rethink his strategy.

The following year, he vowed to spin off his publishing, computer and financial services divisions. Mr Son began looking for acquisitions, targeting companies that made innovative internet technologies, then replicating their strategies in Japan. Today, this approach remains his leading strategy.

In 1999, the company set up three venture capital funds to invest in internet startups in Japan and the US. Softbank also partnered up with Nasdaq to create a Japanese version of the stock index.

Son plans to increase his company`s stake in fledgling South Korean internet companies, despite facing deep-seated resentment from Koreans, who remember Japan`s long and harsh colonial rule over the peninsula. However, Mr Son is a man accustomed to overcoming prejudice.
