Centrex, Inc. (OTCBB:CNEX) today announced that Stratos
Product Development, LLC has notified the Company of the completion of
the breadboard prototype design specifications and electromechanical
detail design for the Centrex single molecule nucleic acid detection
(SMD) system. This milestone is the first major step in the
development of an automated, network capable commercialized version of
a device that will be an adaptable, functional and durable integrated
system for biothreat detection.
Centrex`s SMD technology has been exclusively licensed from Los
Alamos National Laboratories and represents advantages over existing
DNA and RNA detection methods as well as culture-based test methods.
The technology eliminates the need for amplification of the target
DNA, which reduces the possibility of false positive and negative test
results - common concerns identified with other test procedures.
Centrex`s detection system is designed to be adaptable to detect a
variety of bacterial or viral organisms by recognizing the unique DNA
or RNA fingerprint of the organism. The instrument, currently being
developed by Stratos will utilize disposable, multipurpose
microfluidics lab cards that incorporate Centrex`s single molecule
nucleic acid detection (SMD) technology. The disposable lab cards are
being developed by Micronics, Inc., a worldwide leader in the field of
microfluidics, under a separate agreement.
Centrex plans to focus on the commercialization of a first product
that provides a simultaneous multi-channel detection system that is
compact, fully automated and capable of monitoring the presence of
biological agents in air, food and water. Potential additional
applications for the Centrex technology include bioterrorism, Homeland
Security, food and water processing, blood supply screening and
general DNA/RNA testing.
