Qantas looking stronger as Hawaiian circles Sydney

      Published: Friday January 16 2004, 2:15 PM

Qantas Airways Ltd today reported a slight increase increase in total passenger numbers in November 2003 compared to the same month the previous year.

Australia`s largest airline said passenger numbers for its international, domestic and regional operations increased to 2.50 million, compared to 2.47 million in November 2002.

However it also reported a 0.9 per cent decline in total passengers carried for the financial year to date, down to 12.53 million from 12.64 million previously.

The number of domestic passengers was up 4.0 per cent to 1.48 million, while international passengers were down 1.5 per cent to 718,000. advertisement

Late last year Qantas chief executive Geoff Dixon gave his most upbeat commentary since the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) pandemic hit Asia early in 2003.

Mr Dixon forecast a record profit for the airline`s domestic operations for the current financial year and talked up its international division.

International traffic for November, measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPKs) increased by 2.4 per cent in November 2003 while capacity, measured in Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs), increased by 5.8 per cent.

This resulted in a revenue seat factor of 77.8 per cent, 2.5 percentage points lower than for November 2002.

Domestic RPKs increased by 3.0 per cent in November, while ASKs increased by 2.6 per cent over the same period.

The resulting revenue seat factor of 79.1 per cent was 0.3 percentage points higher than the previous year.

Across its International, Domestic, Australian Airlines and QantasLink divisions, overall passenger numbers increased by 1.3 per cent, with RPKs up 3.6 per cent and ASKs up 5.9 per cent.

This resulted in a revenue seat factor of 77.7 per cent, which was 1.7 percentage points lower than the previous year.

Meanwhile, passengers to the United States could be given another flying option after Hawaiian Airlines applied for government approvals to provide non-stop flights from Sydney to Honolulu, commencing on May 18.

The airline plans to offer four weekly flights departing Sydney at 9.30pm every Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Hawaiian said travellers could connect quickly with its onward flights from Honolulu to San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento and Los Angeles, in addition to the Pacific Northwest cities of Seattle and Portland.

Qantas hat noch richtig stark Aufholpotenzial. Es wurde kräftig umstrukturiert und in neue Maschinen investiert. Jetzt sollte sich das ganze so langsam bezahlt machen.

Qantas announces new NZ domestic jet services
      Source: SYDNEY, Jan 22 AAP
      Published: Thursday January 22 2004, 8:30 PM

Qantas Airways Ltd announced today that it would add two new routes to its New Zealand domestic network.

Qantas Airlines New Zealand and Pacific regional general manager Allan Williams said the airline would begin flying Boeing 737s between Christchurch and Rotorua and Christchurch and Wellington from April 1.

Qantas has been operating jet services between Auckland and Wellington and Auckland and Christchurch since establishing its New Zealand domestic operations in April 2001.

"We are now operating a fleet of five Boeing 737s and have progressively added services and destinations since then, including Christchurch-Queenstown in September last year and Auckland-Queenstown non-stop in October," Mr Williams said. advertisement

"Our new Christchurch-Rotorua services will be part of a same plane through service linking Queenstown and Rotorua via Christchurch."

He said the routes would appeal to domestic travellers as well as international visitors flying with Qantas into New Zealand.

From April 1, Qantas will operate 300 domestic flights each week, including 56 return services between Auckland and Christchurch and 45 between Auckland and Wellington.

Qantas is introducing the new services following a decision to no longer lease aircraft from, or codeshare, with New Zealand regional carrier Origin Pacific.

Qantas fires salvo with NZ expansion

      By Scott Rochfort

THE prospect of a long and bloody airline war across the Tasman heightened yesterday, after Qantas announced the expansion of its New Zealand domestic network, just one week out from Pacific Blue`s first scheduled trans-Tasman flight.

Sending its most combative message yet to the Virgin offshoot, Qantas said it planned to start flights from Wellington and Rotorua into Pacific Blue`s home base of Christchurch on April 1.

But with Pacific Blue not expected to begin domestic flights in NZ until later this year at the earliest, analysts said it was Air New Zealand that stood to lose the most from the additional domestic competition.

Despite Air NZ and Qantas still appealing against the rejection of their proposed alliance by competition regulators on both sides of the Tasman, the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation managing director Peter Harbison said: "You can`t wait for the outcome on court proceedings while the marketplace is competing around you."

Yet Pacific Blue is expected to cut it fine in gaining the necessary permission to fly into NZ, with the airline yet to obtain a NZ Air Operators Certificate.

Scheduled to fly its first flight between Brisbane and Christchurch on Thursday, Virgin`s David Huttner said he was confident the airline would get the necessary approval after its first "proving flight" early next week.

By late March, Pacific Blue expects to be flying trans-Tasman flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, Hobart, Launceston, Townsville and Perth into either Christchurch and/or Wellington.

Meanwhile, Qantas is expected to unveil the route structure for its low-cost offshoot, JetStar, within days, before the airline`s first tickets go on sale via the internet next month.

With the airline scheduled to start operations in May with a fleet of 14 Boeing 717s and three Airbus 320s, analysts expect the Melbourne-based JetStar to follow the same route structure as Qantas` existing fleet of B717s before it builds up its fleet of A320s.

Qantas shares hit a three-month high of $3.62 yesterday, before closing 2¢ higher at $3.60.

Mr Harbison said that while he expected SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) to play a role this year, it "could and should" be the best year ever across the Asia-Pacific region.

Further liberalisation of the Asian aviation market, particularly in China and India through new open-skies agreements and regulatory changes, would be a major factor, he said.

Strong economic conditions and forecast growth in Asia, particularly in regional powerhouse Japan, would also be an added bonus.

"We start the year with traffic levels close to a year ago - a strong position given the drastic impact of SARS on the region in 2003," Mr Harbison said.

"The signs ahead are positive. Liberalisation of air services is accelerating rapidly and consumer sentiment is positive in most countries."

Provided airlines in the region could manage capacity effectively, the growth should flow straight to the bottom line.
