Disappointing trial results lead drug stocks lower

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Drug stocks headed lower Tuesday after disappointing results from a cholesterol-lowering drug study and a general decline in the markets cooled interest in the sector.

The Amex Biotechnology Index ($BTK: news, chart, profile) fell 1 percent to 549.76 and the Amex Pharmaceutical Index ($DRG: news, chart, profile) slipped 0.3 percent to 326.86 in morning trading.

Forbes Medi-Tech (FMTI: news, chart, profile) plunged $3.70, or 52 percent, to $3.36 following the Canadian biopharmaceutical firm`s release of results from a Phase II clinical trial of its FM-VP4 cholesterol-lowering drug.

The study found that the treatment was 11 percent more effective in reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol than a placebo, the company said. That result is low compared to how other, similar treatments perform and could affect both the drug`s approval and potential sales.

However, Forbes Medi-Tech said it was "encouraged" enough to pursue further development of the drug.

Phase 2 ging total daneben. Nur 11% Rückgang des Cholesterols. Zum Vergleich, mit Statinen bekommt man das
um mehr als 50% gesenkt. Sie wollen zwar weitermachen mit
veränderten Studienprofil, aber das sieht nicht gut aus.
Vielleicht ist der Abschlag zu heftig, aber längerfristig
wäre ich da sehr vorsichtig. Ich habe mich allerdings nicht
mit den anderen Produkten und der Finanzsituation befaßt.

@Heinerle: Da hast du ja eine interessante Aktie ausgegraben!
Vielleicht wirkt die synergistisch mit Statinen, obwohl ich nun persönlich wirklich kein Fan von übermässiger Cholesterinsenkung bin, aber mancher Internist ist ganz verrückt nach LDL-Senkung. Das ist aber finanziell das größte Rad, an dem man in der Pharmabranche drehen kann.

Data Meets Primary Endpoint in Cholesterol Reduction; Company Moves Towards US Phase II Trial


VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 5, 2004-- Forbes Medi-Tech Inc. (NASDAQ:FMTI - News; TSX:FMI - News) today announced preliminary results of the Phase II clinical trial of the Company`s cholesterol-lowering compound, FM-VP4, completed at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam. The trial`s primary efficacy endpoint of significantly lowering low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol was met. The reduction in LDL cholesterol, as compared to placebo, was 11%, with 33% of subjects at 400 mg per day achieving a greater than 15% reduction. Additionally, FM-VP4 continued to demonstrate an excellent safety profile with no difference between dosing and placebo groups.

"With these results, we are encouraged to pursue our program to develop an adjunctive therapy to statins," said Charles Butt, President & CEO of Forbes Medi-Tech Inc. "The market for this type of combination therapy is projected to reach $4.7 Billion in 2011."

"The Phase II trial produced statistically significant results, which establishes that the compound lowers cholesterol," said Dr. Eric Topol, Chairman, Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and Chief Academic Officer of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. "Forbes Medi-Tech needs to move forward with the further development of FM-VP4 to ascertain the drug`s full potential. The trial was the first human examination, on a limited scale, of the safety and efficacy of FM-VP4 over a 4 week interval. The double blind placebo controlled dose escalation trial consisted of four groups of 25 hypercholesterolemic volunteers treated daily for 28 days with either a placebo or escalating doses of FM-VP4 from 100, 200, 400, and 800 mg per day. A desired effect of FM-VP4 in the Phase II trial was a reduction in LDL cholesterol from the baseline measurement after four weeks of treatment.

The Company plans to continue a Phase II program in the United States. Plans for this program include an expanded number of participants, a longer trial duration and a more focused dosage range.

Also von einem Split habe ich nichts gelesen. Btw, in amerikanischen Boards wird berichtet, daß es uU bis Mo/Di eine positive Meldung aus dem Unternehmen geben soll (zB bei Yahoo).

Das Unternehmen ist echt kurios. Das ist ein Nutriceutcal Unternehmen, was sich bisher auf cholesterinarme Nahrungsmittel spezialisiert hatte, und das jetzt plötzlich in die Pharmaindustrie einsteigen möchte. So erzielt die kandische FMTI bereits jetzt durchaus Erlöse, die sogar im wachsen begriffen sind. Ein wenig wie die Fa. Merz in D. Die Pipeline ist daher aber auch sehr dünn.


Der neue CEO ist aber wirklich ein bekanntes Gesicht in der Forschergemeinde, so hat er maßgeblichen Anteil an der Entwicklung des einzigen wirklich wirksamen Nachsorge-Präparates für den Schlaganfall.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 2004-- Forbes Medi-Tech Inc. (NASDAQ:FMTI - News; TSX:FMI - News) today announced, further to the Company`s April 5th news release and conference call, details from the additional data recently received from the European Phase II clinical trial of its cholesterol-lowering compound, FM-VP4. During the study and as previously indicated, FM-VP4 demonstrated a dose-response that was statistically significant, as shown in Table 1. The data suggests that 400 mg/day may be the optimal dose, although further studies are required to confirm a plateau.

Additionally, the time-response to FM-VP4 indicated that LDL cholesterol levels may continue to decrease when given to patients for longer than 4 weeks, the duration of the completed trial, and that optimal efficacy may not have been achieved, as illustrated in Table 2.

An evaluation of preclinical animal data in comparison to these Phase II results has also indicated the need to examine the effects of timing of FM-VP4 with respect to food intake on the drug`s efficacy.

In addition to identifying trial duration and food-effects as areas for optimization, it has been noted that a patient population with lower triglyceride levels may be more appropriate for measuring the full potential efficacy of a cholesterol absorption inhibitor, a consideration that will be incorporated into the future clinical plan of FM-VP4. Note that all data presented in this news release is preliminary data and subject to change. The complete European Phase II trial report is anticipated in June 2004.

Das mag ja statistisch signifikant sein, das Hauptproblem ist bis jetzt aber die geringe Reduktion des LDLs verglichen mit Statinen, von denen es einige bereits schon als Generika gibt.
