Spyglass Riding High With Investors, Customers
By ANN KEETON
CHICAGO -- A shower of good news from Spyglass Inc. (SPYG) has investors eyeing the Naperville, Ill. software developer
and consultant with renewed interest.
Thursday, the stock skyrocketed 30% to new highs. Recently it traded at 85 1/2, up 18 1/2 or 27.6%, on Nasdaq volume of 2.95
million shares. The year low was 8 5/8 last April.
Analysts expect Spyglass to lose money - a penny a share - in the current quarter. But they see the company earning a profit
for the year, following a string of losses since 1996. A survey of three analysts by First Call/Thomson Financial sees results
turning positive in the third quarter, leading to earnings of 1 cent a share for the year.
In an interview with Dow Jones Newswires, Doug Colbeth, chairman and chief executive officer, said a decision made several
years ago to get out of the desktop-computer market, followed by a period of "massive labor," is beginning to pay off. Deals
such as a market-moving pact announced Thursday with Sony Corp. (SNE) are beginning to generate healthy fees and
licensing royalties.
In the Sony deal, Spyglass will provide products and services for digital cable set-top boxes, including Spyglass Device Mosiac,
an embedded Web browser; Spyglass Device Mail, an embedded e-mail system; Spyglass Microserver, a Web server; as well
as consulting services to make it all work.
Sony will use the technology in set-top boxes it makes for Cablevision Systems Corp. (CVC).
In an earlier life, the Mosaic browser - sold for use with personal computers - was Spyglass` primary source of revenue.
Spyglass nearly received a death blow when competitor Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) began giving its Internet Explorer browser to
PC customers free of charge.
"This is a very significant deal," said analyst George Chandler from Dallas-based Frost Securities about the Sony contract.
Thursday`s run-up of Spyglass stock "blew my price target out of the water," he added.
The most important thing about the Sony deal, Chandler said, is that "it validates Spyglass as a competitor in the high-flying
dot-com business." More specifically, Chandler said, it means that as Sony rolls out cable boxes for the 3.1 million subscribers
of Cablevision, mainly in the key market of New York City, "Spyglass will get a little royalty money from each one of those
boxes."
Chandler said interactive television has been slow to take off, but "with access to the Internet, TV viewers can use their remote
control to click on to all kinds of things that relate to what they`re watching at the moment. In a way, I think this takes the
Home Shopping Network to a whole new level."
In addition to the Mosaic product, Spyglass has developed Prism software, which translates content from the Internet into a
usable format for wireless devices.
"I see the use of wireless devices growing very rapidly," said analyst Chandler. With events like today`s Palm Inc. (PALM)
initial offering, "and with new telephones coming out in a matter of just a few quarters, we`ll see people using all kinds of new
wireless devices," he said.
Colbeth said a test Web site, SpyglassMobile.com, which demonstrates how the technology works, was well received at this
week`s Wireless 2000 trade show in New Orleans.
Prism has some competitors, but Gary Vilchik, chief financial officer, said newcomers IBM Corp. (IBM) and Oracle Corp.
(ORCL) only emphasize how important the market is for a product like Prism. "The amount of money spent in the wireless
sector this year will go from almost nothing to more than $9 billion by 2004, according to industry research," he said.
There are already some agreements for Prism that take advantage of wireless business outside the U.S., like the deal signed
last week with Mitsui & Co. (MITSY). That company, Japan`s largest information technology services provider, will resell
Prism in the Japanese market.
About half of Spyglass`s revenue come from engineering software and related products for specific customers. The other half
comes from product licensing fees, and consulting services for those products.
Speaking from an office in Lexington, Mass., Vilchik said Spyglass has 40 engineers working out of that location exclusively
with Motorola Inc. (MOT) on its set-top boxes in a multi-year project.
Analyst Chandler said Spyglass`s business model, generating revenues both from products and service, gives the company a
very solid foundation. "I really like this management team," he added. "They`ve been burned in the past, so they`re fairly
conservative. They`re not dot-com cowboys."
