Vor einigen Jahren zog eine deutsche Politikerin wegen des militärischen Vorgehens der Bush-Regierung in Irak und anderen Teilen der Welt einen Vergleich zwischen George W. Bush und Adolf Hitler. Ein Aufschrei ging damals durch die US-Presse, und ein Regierungssprecher wies diesen Vergleich als »unverschämt« zurück. Die Politikerin geriet auch in Deutschland unter gewaltigen öffentlichen Druck.

Ich dachte damals, wenn eine führende deutsche Politikerin in Bushs Handeln die Verbrechen Hitlers wiedererkennt, dann hat das Gewicht, denn es ist davon auszugehen, daß sie ihr Urteil nicht aus Böswilligkeit, sondern auf dem Hintergrund historischer Sachkenntnis gefällt hat. Ich nahm den Vorfall zum Anlaß, mich genauer mit der Thematik zu befassen und las verschiedene Reden Hitlers, die er zwischen 1938 und 1941 gehalten hat. Bei seinem Auftritt 1938 im Berliner Sportpalast vor fünfzehntausend begeisterten Zuhörern betonte Hitler, das Reich wolle nichts als Frieden, und er versichere allen Nachbarländern, daß Deutschland die Unantastbarkeit ihrer Territorien garantiere. Das sei keine leere Phrase, sondern der »heilige Wille des Reichs«, das keine territorialen Ansprüche erhebe. Er habe der französischen Regierung mitgeteilt, niemand in Deutschland wolle je wieder einen Krieg gegen Frankreich führen. Es dauerte keine zwei Jahre, und ganz Westeuropa war von der Naziwehrmacht besetzt.

Was hat das alles mit King George II zu tun, dem Herrscher über das US-Imperium? Wir müssen hier keine theoretischen Vergleiche zwischen den Nazis und den Bushs anstellen, weil es Fakten gibt, die belegen, wie nah die Familie Bush den Nazis stand. Der US-Wissenschaftler und politische Aktivist Michael Parenti hat in seinem jüngsten Buch »Super Patriotism« Dokumente des niederländischen Geheimdienstes zitiert, die belegen, daß Prescott Bush, der Vater und Großvater zweier US-Präsidenten, an den Nazis eine schöne Stange Geld verdient hat: »[Prescott Bushs] Union Banking Corporation half den Nazis, Stahl zu produzieren, mit dem alliierte Soldaten getötet wurden, und sie finanzierte auch Kohlebergwerke, in denen jüdische Häftlinge sich zu Todes schuften mußten. Die Bush-Familie profitierte vom Holocaust.«

Vor einem Jahr, im Juli 2005, hat das größte US-Literaturmagazin New York Review of Books unter der Überschrift »Die Neue Weltordnung« einen Artikel des US-Wissenschaftlers Tony Judt veröffentlicht, in dem es heißt: »Die moderne westliche Geschichte kennt einen Vorläufer dieses Landes, dessen Regierungschef die nationale Demütigung und Angst [nach dem 11. September 2001] ausbeutet, um die bürgerlichen Freiheiten einzuschränken; einen Vorläufer dieser Regierung, die den ›permanenten Krieg‹ zum Instrument ihrer Staatspolitik macht und ihre politischen Gegner foltern läßt; dieser herrschenden Klasse, die soziale Errungenschaften unter dem Deckmantel des Schutzes ›nationaler Werte‹ abbaut; dieser Kultur, die sich für einmalig und überlegen hält und die militärische Macht anbetet. ... All das hat einen Vorläufer, denn Europa hat in seiner jüngeren Vergangenheit schon einmal ein solches System erleben müssen, und in Europa hat man auch ein Wort dafür – aber dieses Wort lautet nicht ›Demokratie‹...«

Die deutsche Regierung empfing jetzt einen Präsidenten, der in seinem Amt als Gouverneur von Texas mehr Hinrichtungsbefehle unterzeichnet hat als jeder andere Gouverneur in der modernen US-Geschichte. 151 Männer und Frauen mußten sterben, weil es Bush leichtfiel, mit seiner Unterschrift über Leben und Tod zu entscheiden. Massenmord mittels Krieg, ausgelöst durch angebliche Massenvernichtungswaffen in Irak, angebliches Uran aus Afrika und Saddam Husseins angebliche Verbindungen zu Al Qaida; die Schreckensherrschaft der Folterer von Abu Ghraib, das Massaker von Haditha, die flächendeckende Plünderung von Falludscha, Vergewaltigungen und Morde, geheime Gefängnisse und Folterkammern – klingt das alles bekannt für europäische Ohren? Ja, denn wenn dieser texanische Redneck jetzt in Deutschland willkommen geheißen wird, dann wird damit gleichzeitig wieder die unheilvolle Geschichte des Deutschen Reiches wachgerufen.

WASHINGTON -- After 60 years of inattention and even denial by the U.S. media, newly-uncovered government documents in The National Archives and Library of Congress reveal that Prescott Bush, the grandfather of President George W. Bush, served as a business partner of and U.S. banking operative for the financial architect of the Nazi war machine from 1926 until 1942, when Congress took aggressive action against Bush and his "enemy national" partners.

The documents also show that Bush and his colleagues, according to reports from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, tried to conceal their financial alliance with German industrialist Fritz Thyssen, a steel and coal baron who, beginning in the mid-1920s, personally funded Adolf Hitler's rise to power by the subversion of democratic principle and German law.

Furthermore, the declassified records demonstrate that Bush and his associates, who included E. Roland Harriman, younger brother of American icon W. Averell Harriman, and George Herbert Walker, President Bush's maternal great-grandfather, continued their dealings with the German industrial tycoon for nearly a year after the U.S. entered the war.

No Story?

For six decades these historical facts have gone unreported by the mainstream U.S. media. The essential facts have appeared on the Internet and in relatively obscure books, but were dismissed by the media and Bush family as undocumented diatribes. This story has also escaped the attention of "official" Bush biographers, Presidential historians and publishers of U.S. history books covering World War II and its aftermath.

The White House did not respond to phone calls seeking comment.

The Summer of '42

The unraveling of the web of Bush-Harriman-Thyssen U.S. enterprises, all of which operated out of the same suite of offices at 39 Broadway in New York under the supervision of Prescott Bush, began with a story that ran simultaneously in the New York Herald-Tribune and Washington Post on July 31, 1941. By then, the U.S. had been at war with Germany for nearly eight months.

"Hitler's Angel Has $3 Million in U.S. Bank," declared the front-page Herald-Tribune headline. The lead paragraph characterized Fritz Thyssen as "Adolf Hitler's original patron a decade ago." In fact, the steel and coal magnate had aggressively supported and funded Hitler since October 1923, according to Thyssen's autobiography, I Paid Hitler. In that book, Thyssen also acknowledges his direct personal relationships with Adolf Hitler, Joseph Goebbels and Rudolf Hess.

The Herald-Tribune also cited unnamed sources who suggested Thyssen's U.S. "nest egg" in fact belonged to "Nazi bigwigs" including Goebbels, Hermann Goering, Heinrich Himmler, or even Hitler himself.

Business is Business

The "bank," founded in 1924 by W. Averell Harriman on behalf of Thyssen and his Bank voor Handel en Scheepvaart N.V. of Holland, was Union Banking Corporation (UBC) of New York City. According to government documents, it was in reality a clearing house for a number of Thyssen-controlled enterprises and assets, including as many as a dozen individual businesses. UBC also bought and shipped overseas gold, steel, coal, and U.S. Treasury bonds. The company's activities were administered for Thyssen by a Netherlands-born, naturalized U.S. citizen named Cornelis Lievense, who served as president of UBC. Roland Harriman was chairman and Prescott Bush a managing director.

The Herald-Tribune article did not identify Bush or Harriman as executives of UBC, or Brown Brothers Harriman, in which they were partners, as UBC's private banker. A confidential FBI memo from that period suggested, without naming the Bush and Harriman families, that politically prominent individuals were about to come under official U.S. government scrutiny as Hitler's plunder of Europe continued unabated.

After the "Hitler's Angel" article was published Bush and Harriman made no attempts to divest themselves of the controversial Thyssen financial alliance, nor did they challenge the newspaper report that UBC was, in fact, a de facto Nazi front organization in the U.S.

Instead, the government documents show, Bush and his partners increased their subterfuge to try to conceal the true nature and ownership of their various businesses, particularly after the U.S. entered the war. The documents also disclose that Cornelis Lievense, Thyssen's personal appointee to oversee U.S. matters for his Rotterdam-based Bank voor Handel en Scheepvaart N.V., via UBC for nearly two decades, repeatedly denied to U.S. government investigators any knowledge of the ownership of the Netherlands bank or the role of Thyssen in it. Brown Brothers Harriman sent letters to the government seeking reconsideration of the seizures by using false information.

UBC's original group of business associates included George Herbert Walker, President Bush's maternal great-grandfather, who had a relationship with the Harriman family that began in 1919. In 1922, Walker and W. Averell Harriman traveled to Berlin to set up the German branch of their banking and investment operations, which were largely based on critical war resources such as steel and coal.

The Walker-Harriman-created German industrial alliance also included partnership with another German titan who supported Hitler's rise, Friedrich Flick, who partnered with Thyssen in the German Steel Trust that forged the Nazi war machine. For his role in using slave labor and his own steel, coal and arms resources to build Hitler's war effort, Flick was convicted at the Nuremberg trials and sentenced to prison.

The Family Business

In 1926, after Prescott Bush had married Walker's daughter, Dorothy, Walker brought Bush in as a vice president of the private banking and investment firm of W.A. Harriman & Co., also located in New York. Bush became a partner in the firm that later became Brown Brothers Harriman and the largest private investment bank in the world. Eventually, Bush became a director of and stockholder in UBC.

However, the government documents note that Bush, Harriman, Lievense and the other UBC stockholders were in fact "nominees," or phantom shareholders, for Thyssen and his Holland bank, meaning that they acted at the direct behest of their German client.

Seized

On October 20, 1942, under authority of the Trading with the Enemy Act, the U.S. Congress seized UBC and liquidated its assets after the war. The seizure is confirmed by Vesting Order No. 248 in the U.S. Office of the Alien Property Custodian and signed by U.S. Alien Property Custodian Leo T. Crowley.

In August, under the same authority, Congress had seized the first of the Bush-Harriman-managed Thyssen entities, Hamburg-American Line, under Vesting Order No. 126, also signed by Crowley. Eight days after the seizure of UBC, Congress invoked the Trading with the Enemy Act again to take control of two more Bush-Harriman-Thyssen businesses - Holland-American Trading Corp. (Vesting Order No. 261) and Seamless Steel Equipment Corp. (Vesting Order No. 259).

The documents from the Archives also show that the Bushes and Harrimans shipped valuable U.S. assets, including gold, coal, steel and U.S. Treasury bonds, to their foreign clients overseas between 1931-33, as Hitler engineered his rise to power.

Still No Story?

Since 1942, the information has not appeared in any U.S. news coverage of any Bush political campaign, nor has it been included in any of the major Bush family biographies. It was, however, covered extensively in George H.W. Bush: The Unauthorized Biography, by Webster Tarpley and Anton Chaitkin. Chaitkin's father served as an attorney in the 1940s for some of the victims of the Bush-Harriman-Thyssen businesses.

The book gave a detailed, accurate accounting of the Bush family's long Nazi affiliation, but no mainstream U.S. media entity reported on or even investigated the allegations, despite careful documentation by the authors. Major booksellers declined to distribute the book, which was dismissed by Bush supporters as biased and untrue. Its authors struggled even to be reviewed in reputable newspapers. That the book was published by Lyndon LaRouche's organization undoubtedly made it easier to dismiss, but does not change the facts.

The essence of the story has been posted for years on various Internet sites, including BuzzFlash.com and TakeBackTheMedia.com, but no online media seem to have independently confirmed it.

In the 1990s, former U.S. Justice Department Nazi war crimes prosecutor John Loftus, now honorary president of the Florida Holocaust Museum, wrote a book and launched a web site (<>www.john-loftus.com) which did breakthrough reporting, including establishing the link between Prescott Bush, Consolidated Silesian Steel Corporation and forced labor at Auschwitz. Although the widely-respected Loftus established a successful international speaking career with his information, no U.S. newspaper or major TV news program acknowledged his decade of work, nor did he ever see many of the recently released documents.

Meanwhile, the mainstream media have apparently made no attempt since World War II to either verify or disprove the allegations of Nazi collaboration against the Bush family. Instead, they have attempted to dismiss or discredit such Internet sites or "unauthorized" books without any journalistic inquiry or research into their veracity.

Loyal Defenders

The National Review ran an essay on September 1 by their White House correspondent Byron York, entitled "Annals of Bush-Hating." It begins

mockingly: "Are you aware of the murderous history of George W. Bush - indeed, of the entire Bush family? Are you aware of the president's Nazi sympathies? His crimes against humanity? And do you know, by the way, that George W. Bush is a certifiable moron?" York goes on to discredit the "Bush is a moron" IQ hoax, but fails to disprove the Nazi connection.

The more liberal Boston Globe ran a column September 29 by Reason magazine's Cathy Young in which she referred to "Bush-o-phobes on the Internet" who "repeat preposterous claims about the Bush family's alleged Nazi connections."

Poles Tackle the Topic

Newsweek Polska, the magazine's Polish edition, published a short piece on the "Bush Nazi past" in its March 5, 2003 edition. The item reported that "the Bush family reaped rewards from the forced-labor prisoners in the Auschwitz concentration camp," according to a copyrighted English-language translation from Scoop Media (<>www.scoop.co.nz). The story also reported the seizure of the various Bush-Harriman-Thyssen businesses.

Still Not Interested

Major U.S. media outlets, including ABC News, NBC News, CNN, The New York Times, Washington Post, Washington Times, Los Angeles Times and Miami Herald, as well as Knight-Ridder Newspapers, have repeatedly declined to investigate the story when information regarding discovery of the documents was presented to them beginning Friday, August 29. Newsweek U.S. correspondent Michael Isikoff, famous for his reporting of big scoops during the Clinton-Lewinsky sexual affair of the 1990s, declined twice to accept an exclusive story based on the documents from the archives.

Aftermath

In 1952, Prescott Bush was elected to the U.S. Senate, with no press accounts about his well-concealed Nazi past. There is no record of any U.S. press coverage of the Bush-Nazi connection during any political campaigns conducted by George Herbert Walker Bush, Jeb Bush, or George W. Bush, with the exception of a brief mention in an unrelated story in the Sarasota Herald Tribune in November 2000 and a brief but inaccurate account in The Boston Globe in 2001.

Rumours of a link between the US first family and the Nazi war machine have circulated for decades. Now the Guardian can reveal how repercussions of events that culminated in action under the Trading with the Enemy Act are still being felt by today's president

George Bush's grandfather, the late US senator Prescott Bush, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from their involvement with the financial backers of Nazi Germany.
The Guardian has obtained confirmation from newly discovered files in the US National Archives that a firm of which Prescott Bush was a director was involved with the financial architects of Nazism.

His business dealings, which continued until his company's assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act, has led more than 60 years later to a civil action for damages being brought in Germany against the Bush family by two former slave labourers at Auschwitz and to a hum of pre-election controversy.

The evidence has also prompted one former US Nazi war crimes prosecutor to argue that the late senator's action should have been grounds for prosecution for giving aid and comfort to the enemy.
The debate over Prescott Bush's behaviour has been bubbling under the surface for some time. There has been a steady internet chatter about the "Bush/Nazi" connection, much of it inaccurate and unfair. But the new documents, many of which were only declassified last year, show that even after America had entered the war and when there was already significant information about the Nazis' plans and policies, he worked for and profited from companies closely involved with the very German businesses that financed Hitler's rise to power. It has also been suggested that the money he made from these dealings helped to establish the Bush family fortune and set up its political dynasty.

Remarkably, little of Bush's dealings with Germany has received public scrutiny, partly because of the secret status of the documentation involving him. But now the multibillion dollar legal action for damages by two Holocaust survivors against the Bush family, and the imminent publication of three books on the subject are threatening to make Prescott Bush's business history an uncomfortable issue for his grandson, George W, as he seeks re-election.

While there is no suggestion that Prescott Bush was sympathetic to the Nazi cause, the documents reveal that the firm he worked for, Brown Brothers Harriman (BBH), acted as a US base for the German industrialist, Fritz Thyssen, who helped finance Hitler in the 1930s before falling out with him at the end of the decade. The Guardian has seen evidence that shows Bush was the director of the New York-based Union Banking Corporation (UBC) that represented Thyssen's US interests and he continued to work for the bank after America entered the war.

Tantalising


Bush was also on the board of at least one of the companies that formed part of a multinational network of front companies to allow Thyssen to move assets around the world.

Thyssen owned the largest steel and coal company in Germany and grew rich from Hitler's efforts to re-arm between the two world wars. One of the pillars in Thyssen's international corporate web, UBC, worked exclusively for, and was owned by, a Thyssen-controlled bank in the Netherlands. More tantalising are Bush's links to the Consolidated Silesian Steel Company (CSSC), based in mineral rich Silesia on the German-Polish border. During the war, the company made use of Nazi slave labour from the concentration camps, including Auschwitz. The ownership of CSSC changed hands several times in the 1930s, but documents from the US National Archive declassified last year link Bush to CSSC, although it is not clear if he and UBC were still involved in the company when Thyssen's American assets were seized in 1942.

Three sets of archives spell out Prescott Bush's involvement. All three are readily available, thanks to the efficient US archive system and a helpful and dedicated staff at both the Library of Congress in Washington and the National Archives at the University of Maryland.

The first set of files, the Harriman papers in the Library of Congress, show that Prescott Bush was a director and shareholder of a number of companies involved with Thyssen.

The second set of papers, which are in the National Archives, are contained in vesting order number 248 which records the seizure of the company assets. What these files show is that on October 20 1942 the alien property custodian seized the assets of the UBC, of which Prescott Bush was a director. Having gone through the books of the bank, further seizures were made against two affiliates, the Holland-American Trading Corporation and the Seamless Steel Equipment Corporation. By November, the Silesian-American Company, another of Prescott Bush's ventures, had also been seized.

The third set of documents, also at the National Archives, are contained in the files on IG Farben, who was prosecuted for war crimes.

A report issued by the Office of Alien Property Custodian in 1942 stated of the companies that "since 1939, these (steel and mining) properties have been in possession of and have been operated by the German government and have undoubtedly been of considerable assistance to that country's war effort".

Prescott Bush, a 6ft 4in charmer with a rich singing voice, was the founder of the Bush political dynasty and was once considered a potential presidential candidate himself. Like his son, George, and grandson, George W, he went to Yale where he was, again like his descendants, a member of the secretive and influential Skull and Bones student society. He was an artillery captain in the first world war and married Dorothy Walker, the daughter of George Herbert Walker, in 1921.

In 1924, his father-in-law, a well-known St Louis investment banker, helped set him up in business in New York with Averill Harriman, the wealthy son of railroad magnate E H Harriman in New York, who had gone into banking.

One of the first jobs Walker gave Bush was to manage UBC. Bush was a founding member of the bank and the incorporation documents, which list him as one of seven directors, show he owned one share in UBC worth $125.

The bank was set up by Harriman and Bush's father-in-law to provide a US bank for the Thyssens, Germany's most powerful industrial family.

August Thyssen, the founder of the dynasty had been a major contributor to Germany's first world war effort and in the 1920s, he and his sons Fritz and Heinrich established a network of overseas banks and companies so their assets and money could be whisked offshore if threatened again.

By the time Fritz Thyssen inherited the business empire in 1926, Germany's economic recovery was faltering. After hearing Adolf Hitler speak, Thyssen became mesmerised by the young firebrand. He joined the Nazi party in December 1931 and admits backing Hitler in his autobiography, I Paid Hitler, when the National Socialists were still a radical fringe party. He stepped in several times to bail out the struggling party: in 1928 Thyssen had bought the Barlow Palace on Briennerstrasse, in Munich, which Hitler converted into the Brown House, the headquarters of the Nazi party. The money came from another Thyssen overseas institution, the Bank voor Handel en Scheepvarrt in Rotterdam.

By the late 1930s, Brown Brothers Harriman, which claimed to be the world's largest private investment bank, and UBC had bought and shipped millions of dollars of gold, fuel, steel, coal and US treasury bonds to Germany, both feeding and financing Hitler's build-up to war.

Between 1931 and 1933 UBC bought more than $8m worth of gold, of which $3m was shipped abroad. According to documents seen by the Guardian, after UBC was set up it transferred $2m to BBH accounts and between 1924 and 1940 the assets of UBC hovered around $3m, dropping to $1m only on a few occasions.

In 1941, Thyssen fled Germany after falling out with Hitler but he was captured in France and detained for the remainder of the war.

There was nothing illegal in doing business with the Thyssens throughout the 1930s and many of America's best-known business names invested heavily in the German economic recovery. However, everything changed after Germany invaded Poland in 1939. Even then it could be argued that BBH was within its rights continuing business relations with the Thyssens until the end of 1941 as the US was still technically neutral until the attack on Pearl Harbor. The trouble started on July 30 1942 when the New York Herald-Tribune ran an article entitled "Hitler's Angel Has $3m in US Bank". UBC's huge gold purchases had raised suspicions that the bank was in fact a "secret nest egg" hidden in New York for Thyssen and other Nazi bigwigs. The Alien Property Commission (APC) launched an investigation.

There is no dispute over the fact that the US government seized a string of assets controlled by BBH - including UBC and SAC - in the autumn of 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy act. What is in dispute is if Harriman, Walker and Bush did more than own these companies on paper.

Erwin May, a treasury attache and officer for the department of investigation in the APC, was assigned to look into UBC's business. The first fact to emerge was that Roland Harriman, Prescott Bush and the other directors didn't actually own their shares in UBC but merely held them on behalf of Bank voor Handel. Strangely, no one seemed to know who owned the Rotterdam-based bank, including UBC's president.

May wrote in his report of August 16 1941: "Union Banking Corporation, incorporated August 4 1924, is wholly owned by the Bank voor Handel en Scheepvaart N.V of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. My investigation has produced no evidence as to the ownership of the Dutch bank. Mr Cornelis [sic] Lievense, president of UBC, claims no knowledge as to the ownership of the Bank voor Handel but believes it possible that Baron Heinrich Thyssen, brother of Fritz Thyssen, may own a substantial interest."

May cleared the bank of holding a golden nest egg for the Nazi leaders but went on to describe a network of companies spreading out from UBC across Europe, America and Canada, and how money from voor Handel travelled to these companies through UBC.

By September May had traced the origins of the non-American board members and found that Dutchman HJ Kouwenhoven - who met with Harriman in 1924 to set up UBC - had several other jobs: in addition to being the managing director of voor Handel he was also the director of the August Thyssen bank in Berlin and a director of Fritz Thyssen's Union Steel Works, the holding company that controlled Thyssen's steel and coal mine empire in Germany.

Within a few weeks, Homer Jones, the chief of the APC investigation and research division sent a memo to the executive committee of APC recommending the US government vest UBC and its assets. Jones named the directors of the bank in the memo, including Prescott Bush's name, and wrote: "Said stock is held by the above named individuals, however, solely as nominees for the Bank voor Handel, Rotterdam, Holland, which is owned by one or more of the Thyssen family, nationals of Germany and Hungary. The 4,000 shares hereinbefore set out are therefore beneficially owned and help for the interests of enemy nationals, and are vestible by the APC," according to the memo from the National Archives seen by the Guardian.

Red-handed


Jones recommended that the assets be liquidated for the benefit of the government, but instead UBC was maintained intact and eventually returned to the American shareholders after the war. Some claim that Bush sold his share in UBC after the war for $1.5m - a huge amount of money at the time - but there is no documentary evidence to support this claim. No further action was ever taken nor was the investigation continued, despite the fact UBC was caught red-handed operating a American shell company for the Thyssen family eight months after America had entered the war and that this was the bank that had partly financed Hitler's rise to power.

The most tantalising part of the story remains shrouded in mystery: the connection, if any, between Prescott Bush, Thyssen, Consolidated Silesian Steel Company (CSSC) and Auschwitz.

Thyssen's partner in United Steel Works, which had coal mines and steel plants across the region, was Friedrich Flick, another steel magnate who also owned part of IG Farben, the powerful German chemical company.

Flick's plants in Poland made heavy use of slave labour from the concentration camps in Poland. According to a New York Times article published in March 18 1934 Flick owned two-thirds of CSSC while "American interests" held the rest.

The US National Archive documents show that BBH's involvement with CSSC was more than simply holding the shares in the mid-1930s. Bush's friend and fellow "bonesman" Knight Woolley, another partner at BBH, wrote to Averill Harriman in January 1933 warning of problems with CSSC after the Poles started their drive to nationalise the plant. "The Consolidated Silesian Steel Company situation has become increasingly complicated, and I have accordingly brought in Sullivan and Cromwell, in order to be sure that our interests are protected," wrote Knight. "After studying the situation Foster Dulles is insisting that their man in Berlin get into the picture and obtain the information which the directors here should have. You will recall that Foster is a director and he is particularly anxious to be certain that there is no liability attaching to the American directors."

But the ownership of the CSSC between 1939 when the Germans invaded Poland and 1942 when the US government vested UBC and SAC is not clear.

"SAC held coal mines and definitely owned CSSC between 1934 and 1935, but when SAC was vested there was no trace of CSSC. All concrete evidence of its ownership disappears after 1935 and there are only a few traces in 1938 and 1939," says Eva Schweitzer, the journalist and author whose book, America and the Holocaust, is published next month.

Silesia was quickly made part of the German Reich after the invasion, but while Polish factories were seized by the Nazis, those belonging to the still neutral Americans (and some other nationals) were treated more carefully as Hitler was still hoping to persuade the US to at least sit out the war as a neutral country. Schweitzer says American interests were dealt with on a case-by-case basis. The Nazis bought some out, but not others.

The two Holocaust survivors suing the US government and the Bush family for a total of $40bn in compensation claim both materially benefited from Auschwitz slave labour during the second world war.

Kurt Julius Goldstein, 87, and Peter Gingold, 85, began a class action in America in 2001, but the case was thrown out by Judge Rosemary Collier on the grounds that the government cannot be held liable under the principle of "state sovereignty".

Jan Lissmann, one of the lawyers for the survivors, said: "President Bush withdrew President Bill Clinton's signature from the treaty [that founded the court] not only to protect Americans, but also to protect himself and his family."

Lissmann argues that genocide-related cases are covered by international law, which does hold governments accountable for their actions. He claims the ruling was invalid as no hearing took place.

In their claims, Mr Goldstein and Mr Gingold, honorary chairman of the League of Anti-fascists, suggest the Americans were aware of what was happening at Auschwitz and should have bombed the camp.

The lawyers also filed a motion in The Hague asking for an opinion on whether state sovereignty is a valid reason for refusing to hear their case. A ruling is expected within a month.

The petition to The Hague states: "From April 1944 on, the American Air Force could have destroyed the camp with air raids, as well as the railway bridges and railway lines from Hungary to Auschwitz. The murder of about 400,000 Hungarian Holocaust victims could have been prevented."

The case is built around a January 22 1944 executive order signed by President Franklin Roosevelt calling on the government to take all measures to rescue the European Jews. The lawyers claim the order was ignored because of pressure brought by a group of big American companies, including BBH, where Prescott Bush was a director.

Lissmann said: "If we have a positive ruling from the court it will cause [president] Bush huge problems and make him personally liable to pay compensation."

The US government and the Bush family deny all the claims against them.

In addition to Eva Schweitzer's book, two other books are about to be published that raise the subject of Prescott Bush's business history. The author of the second book, to be published next year, John Loftus, is a former US attorney who prosecuted Nazi war criminals in the 70s. Now living in St Petersburg, Florida and earning his living as a security commentator for Fox News and ABC radio, Loftus is working on a novel which uses some of the material he has uncovered on Bush. Loftus stressed that what Prescott Bush was involved in was just what many other American and British businessmen were doing at the time.

"You can't blame Bush for what his grandfather did any more than you can blame Jack Kennedy for what his father did - bought Nazi stocks - but what is important is the cover-up, how it could have gone on so successfully for half a century, and does that have implications for us today?" he said.

"This was the mechanism by which Hitler was funded to come to power, this was the mechanism by which the Third Reich's defence industry was re-armed, this was the mechanism by which Nazi profits were repatriated back to the American owners, this was the mechanism by which investigations into the financial laundering of the Third Reich were blunted," said Loftus, who is vice-chairman of the Holocaust Museum in St Petersburg.

"The Union Banking Corporation was a holding company for the Nazis, for Fritz Thyssen," said Loftus. "At various times, the Bush family has tried to spin it, saying they were owned by a Dutch bank and it wasn't until the Nazis took over Holland that they realised that now the Nazis controlled the apparent company and that is why the Bush supporters claim when the war was over they got their money back. Both the American treasury investigations and the intelligence investigations in Europe completely bely that, it's absolute horseshit. They always knew who the ultimate beneficiaries were."

"There is no one left alive who could be prosecuted but they did get away with it," said Loftus. "As a former federal prosecutor, I would make a case for Prescott Bush, his father-in-law (George Walker) and Averill Harriman [to be prosecuted] for giving aid and comfort to the enemy. They remained on the boards of these companies knowing that they were of financial benefit to the nation of Germany."

Loftus said Prescott Bush must have been aware of what was happening in Germany at the time. "My take on him was that he was a not terribly successful in-law who did what Herbert Walker told him to. Walker and Harriman were the two evil geniuses, they didn't care about the Nazis any more than they cared about their investments with the Bolsheviks."

What is also at issue is how much money Bush made from his involvement. His supporters suggest that he had one token share. Loftus disputes this, citing sources in "the banking and intelligence communities" and suggesting that the Bush family, through George Herbert Walker and Prescott, got $1.5m out of the involvement. There is, however, no paper trail to this sum.

The third person going into print on the subject is John Buchanan, 54, a Miami-based magazine journalist who started examining the files while working on a screenplay. Last year, Buchanan published his findings in the venerable but small-circulation New Hampshire Gazette under the headline "Documents in National Archives Prove George Bush's Grandfather Traded With the Nazis - Even After Pearl Harbor". He expands on this in his book to be published next month - Fixing America: Breaking the Stranglehold of Corporate Rule, Big Media and the Religious Right.

In the article, Buchanan, who has worked mainly in the trade and music press with a spell as a muckraking reporter in Miami, claimed that "the essential facts have appeared on the internet and in relatively obscure books but were dismissed by the media and Bush family as undocumented diatribes".

Buchanan suffers from hypermania, a form of manic depression, and when he found himself rebuffed in his initial efforts to interest the media, he responded with a series of threats against the journalists and media outlets that had spurned him. The threats, contained in e-mails, suggested that he would expose the journalists as "traitors to the truth".

Unsurprisingly, he soon had difficulty getting his calls returned. Most seriously, he faced aggravated stalking charges in Miami, in connection with a man with whom he had fallen out over the best way to publicise his findings. The charges were dropped last month.

Biography


Buchanan said he regretted his behaviour had damaged his credibility but his main aim was to secure publicity for the story. Both Loftus and Schweitzer say Buchanan has come up with previously undisclosed documentation.

The Bush family have largely responded with no comment to any reference to Prescott Bush. Brown Brothers Harriman also declined to comment.

The Bush family recently approved a flattering biography of Prescott Bush entitled Duty, Honour, Country by Mickey Herskowitz. The publishers, Rutledge Hill Press, promised the book would "deal honestly with Prescott Bush's alleged business relationships with Nazi industrialists and other accusations".

In fact, the allegations are dealt with in less than two pages. The book refers to the Herald-Tribune story by saying that "a person of less established ethics would have panicked ... Bush and his partners at Brown Brothers Harriman informed the government regulators that the account, opened in the late 1930s, was 'an unpaid courtesy for a client' ... Prescott Bush acted quickly and openly on behalf of the firm, served well by a reputation that had never been compromised. He made available all records and all documents. Viewed six decades later in the era of serial corporate scandals and shattered careers, he received what can be viewed as the ultimate clean bill."

The Prescott Bush story has been condemned by both conservatives and some liberals as having nothing to do with the current president. It has also been suggested that Prescott Bush had little to do with Averill Harriman and that the two men opposed each other politically.

However, documents from the Harriman papers include a flattering wartime profile of Harriman in the New York Journal American and next to it in the files is a letter to the financial editor of that paper from Prescott Bush congratulating the paper for running the profile. He added that Harriman's "performance and his whole attitude has been a source of inspiration and pride to his partners and his friends".

The Anti-Defamation League in the US is supportive of Prescott Bush and the Bush family. In a statement last year they said that "rumours about the alleged Nazi 'ties' of the late Prescott Bush ... have circulated widely through the internet in recent years. These charges are untenable and politically motivated ... Prescott Bush was neither a Nazi nor a Nazi sympathiser."

However, one of the country's oldest Jewish publications, the Jewish Advocate, has aired the controversy in detail.

More than 60 years after Prescott Bush came briefly under scrutiny at the time of a faraway war, his grandson is facing a different kind of scrutiny but one underpinned by the same perception that, for some people, war can be a profitable business.

Kennedy was (for a while) a close friend with leading Jewish lawyer Felix Frankfurter, who helped Kennedy get his sons into the London School of Economics, where they worked with Harold Laski, a leading Jewish intellectual and prominent Socialist. While holding positive attitudes towards individual Jews, Kennedy's views of the Jews as a people were, by his own admission, overwhelmingly negative.

According to Harvey Klemmer, who served as one of Kennedy's embassy aides, Kennedy habitually referred to Jews as "kikes or sheenies." Kennedy allegedly told Klemmer that "[some] individual Jews are all right, Harvey, but as a race they stink. They spoil everything they touch." When Klemmer returned from a trip to Germany and reported the pattern of vandalism and assault on Jews by Nazis, Kennedy responded "well, they brought it on themselves."

On June 13, 1938, Kennedy met with Herbert von Dirksen, the German ambassador in London, who reported to Berlin that Kennedy had told him that "it was not so much the fact that we want to get rid of the Jews that was so harmful to us, but rather the loud clamor with which we accompanied this purpose. Kennedy himself fully understood our Jewish policy." Kennedy's main concern with such violent acts against German Jews as Kristallnacht was that they generated bad publicity in the West for the Nazi regime, a concern he communicated in a letter to Charles Lindbergh.

Kennedy had a close friendship with Nancy Astor, who shared (and perhaps surpassed) his hatred of the Jews; the correspondence between them is replete with anti-Semitic tropes. As Edward Renehan notes:

As fiercely anti-Communist as they were anti-Semitic, Kennedy and Astor looked upon Adolf Hitler as a welcome solution to both of these "world problems" (Nancy's phrase). No member of the so-called "Cliveden Set" (the informal cabal of appeasers who met frequently at Nancy Astor's palatial home) seemed much concerned with the dilemma faced by Jews under the Reich. Astor wrote Kennedy that Hitler would have to do more than just "give a rough time" to "the killers of Christ" before she'd be in favor of launching "Armageddon to save them. The wheel of history swings round as the Lord would have it. Who are we to stand in the way of the future?" Kennedy replied that he expected the "Jew media" in the United States to become a problem, that "Jewish pundits in New York and Los Angeles" were already making noises contrived to "set a match to the fuse of the world."

By August 1940, Kennedy worried that a third term for Roosevelt meant war; as Leamer reports, "Joe believed that Roosevelt, Churchill, the Jews and their allies would manipulate America into approaching Armageddon."[ Nevertheless Kennedy campaigned for Roosevelt. Even during the height of the conflict, however, Kennedy remained "more wary of" prominent American Jews such as Felix Frankfurter than he was of Hitler

Kennedy told reporter Joe Dinneen:

It is true that I have a low opinion of some Jews in public office and in private life. That does not mean that I... believe they should be wiped off the face of the earth... Jews who take an unfair advantage of the fact that theirs is a persecuted race do not help much... Publicizing unjust attacks upon the Jews may help to cure the injustice, but continually publicizing the whole problem only serves to keep it alive in the public mind.

When Dinneen wrote The Kennedy Family, he was pressured to remove these quotations from the book by John F. Kennedy himself. Dineen complied.

Der Holocaust und das Vermögen der Familie Bush

Unmittelbar nach dem Krieg sah sich die amerikanische Besatzungsmacht gezwungen, die Verantwortung des deutschen Großkapitals für die vom Naziregime verübten Verbrechen anzuerkennen. General Telford Taylor, einer der wichtigsten Ankläger in den Nürnberger Kriegsverbrecher-Prozessen, drängte auf die Verurteilung einiger der wichtigsten deutschen Wirtschaftsführer. Einer von ihnen war Friedrich Flick, zusammen mit Fritz Thyssen Besitzer des Deutschen Stahltrusts. Von 1932 an war er einer der wichtigsten finanziellen Unterstützer der Nazis und der SS gewesen.

Taylor erklärte in seinem Schlussplädoyer vor Gericht: "Wir haben es mit Männern zu tun, die so sehr auf die Erlangung von Macht und Reichtum orientiert waren, dass alles andere für sie zweitrangig war. Ich weiß nicht, ob Flick und seine Partner die Juden hassten oder nicht; es ist wohl möglich, dass er dem Thema niemals große Bedeutung beimaß, bis es für ihn eine Frage von praktischer Bedeutung, und nicht seiner inneren Gefühle und Empfindungen, wurde."

Er fuhr fort: "Die Angeklagten waren reiche Männer; in ihrem Privatbesitz befanden sich zahlreiche Bergwerke und Fabriken. Sie werden euch sicherlich erzählen, dass sie an die Heiligkeit des Privateigentums glaubten, und vielleicht werden sie sagen, dass sie Hitler unterstützten, weil der deutsche Kommunismus dieses Konzept bedrohte. Aber die Fabriken von Rombach und Riga gehörten jemand anderem."

Genau wie die Ölquellen des Irak, könnte man hinzufügen.

Die Beschreibung, die General Taylor von der deutschen herrschenden Elite gab, trifft mit kleinen Abänderungen auch auf die räuberische Schicht von Multimillionären zu, auf die sich die Bush-Regierung hauptsächlich stützt.

Man muss hinzufügen, dass General Taylor selbst bis zu seinem Tod 1998 mit dem zunehmenden anti-kommunistischen historischen Revisionismus über Kreuz lag. Er war einer der ersten, der öffentlich gegen Senator Joseph McCarthys Kommunistenjagd Stellung nahm. Und er war ein prominenter Gegner des US-Kriegs in Vietnam und argumentierte, dass der Prozess gegen Leutnant William Calley wegen des Massakers an über 500 Frauen und Kindern in My Lai auch auf die Befehlskette an der Spitze des amerikanischen Militärs hätte ausgedehnt werden müssen.

Prescott Bush und die Nazis

Die historischen Wurzeln des Faschismus in Deutschland zu verdecken hat für Bush eine besondere, ja persönliche Bedeutung. Der Vater des Präsidenten machte Geschäfte mit der Familie Bin Laden. Sein Großvater vermehrte den Familienreichtum durch Geschäfte mit Nazideutschland. Einige vermuten, dass das Vermögen der Bushs zum Teil direkt aus der Ausbeutung von Sklavenarbeit in Auschwitz herrührt.

Von den zwanziger bis in die vierziger Jahre - d.h. bis nach Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs - war Prescott Bush Teilhaber und Mitglied des Vorstands der Brown Brothers Harriman Holding Company an der Wall Street und Leiter einer ihrer finanziellen Schlüsselkomponenten, der Union Banking Corporation (UBC).

Gemeinsam mit seinem Schwiegervater George Herbert Walker - dem Urgroßvater des jetzigen Präsidenten - kontrollierte Prescott Bush die Hamburg-Amerika Schifffahrtslinie, die sich ebenfalls im Besitz der Holding Company befand und deren sich die Nazis bedienten, um ihre Agenten nach und aus Nordamerika zu bringen.

Ein weiterer Zweig der Harriman Gruppe, Harriman International Co., traf 1933 eine Verabredung mit Hitler, um die deutschen Exporte auf dem US-Markt zu koordinieren.

Währenddessen wickelte UBC sämtliche Bankgeschäfte außerhalb Deutschlands für Fritz Thyssen ab, den deutschen Industriemagnaten, der die Nazibewegung von 1923 bis zu ihrer Machtübernahme finanzierte.

Zehn Monate nach ihrem Eintritt in den Zweiten Weltkrieg beschlagnahmte die US-Regierung im Oktober 1942 UBC und einige weitere Unternehmen, an denen Prescott Bush und die Harrimans Anteile hielten. In der Anordnung Washingtons zur Beschlagnahme der Bank wurden neben Bush und Harriman drei Nazi-Führer genannt.

Eine Untersuchung aus dem Jahr 1945 legt offen, dass die von Prescott Bush geführte Bank mit dem Deutschen Stahltrust in Verbindung stand, der von Thyssen und Flick geleitet wurde, einem der Angeklagten in Nürnberg. Dieser gigantische Industriekonzern produzierte die Hälfte des Stahls und über ein Drittel des Sprengstoffs sowie weitere nicht unerhebliche strategische Materialien, die von der deutschen Kriegsmaschinerie während der Kriegsjahre gebraucht wurden.

Am 28. Oktober 1942 beschlagnahmte die US-Regierung die Vermögen zweier Unternehmen, die dem Naziregime als Tarnfirmen dienten: der Holland-Amerika Handelsgesellschaft und der Seamless Steel Equipment Corporation. Beide wurden von UBC kontrolliert. Einen Monat später übernahm die Regierung auch die Anteile der Nazis an der Schlesisch-Amerikanischen Gesellschaft (SAC), die von Prescott Bush und seinem Schwiegervater George Walker geführt wurde.

Der Beschlagnahmungsbefehl aufgrund des Gesetzes über Handel mit dem Feind beschrieb die Schlesisch-Amerikanische Gesellschaft als eine "US Holding Company mit deutschen und polnischen Tochterfirmen", die große und wertvolle Kohle- und Zinkbergwerke in Schlesien, Polen und Deutschland kontrollieren. Weiter hieß es da, dass diese Besitztümer seit September 1939 (als Hitler den Zweiten Weltkrieg begann) unter Kontrolle des Naziregimes gestanden hätten, das sie in den Dienst des Krieges gestellt habe.

Zur SAC gehörte eine Stahlfabrik in Polen im selben Bezirk wie Auschwitz. Die Fabrik setzte angeblich Insassen des Konzentrationslagers als Arbeitssklaven ein.

Zu denen, die die Verbindungen zwischen den Bushs und den Nazis untersucht haben, gehört John Loftus, ein ehemaliger Staatsanwalt der Abteilung für Kriegsverbrechen des Justizministeriums, der jetzt dem Florida Holocoust Museum in Sankt Petersburg (USA) vorsteht. Loftus zufolge erhielt die Bush-Familie 1,5 Millionen Dollar für ihre Anteile an UBC, als die Bank 1951 endgültig aufgelöst wurde. "Dort kam der Reichtum der Familie Bush her: Er kam aus dem Dritten Reich," erklärte Loftus kürzlich in einer Rede.

Loftus behauptet, dass dieses Geld - eine ansehnliche Summe zu jener Zeit - direkte Profite aus der Sklavenarbeit von Auschwitzopfern enthält. In einem Interview mit dem Journalisten Toby Rogers sagte der ehemalige Staatsanwalt: "Es ist schlimm genug, dass die Bush-Familie Thyssen dabei half, das Geld für den Aufstieg Hitlers in den zwanziger Jahren aufzubringen, aber dem Feind in Zeiten des Krieges zu helfen ist Verrat. Die Bush-Bank half den Thyssens, den Nazi-Stahl zu erzeugen, der alliierte Soldaten tötete. So schlimm die Finanzierung der Kriegsmaschinerie der Nazis auch scheinen mag, aber Beihilfe und Unterstützung für den Holocaust zu leisten war schlimmer. In Thyssens Kohlegruben wurden jüdische Sklaven benutzt, als ob es Wegwerf-Chemikalien gewesen wären. Die Thyssen-Familie hat sechs Millionen Leichen im Keller, und was die Komplizenrolle der Bush-Familie angeht, so sind eine Unmenge an strafrechtlichen und historischen Fragen zu beantworten."

Prescott Bush war sicher kein Einzelfall, obwohl seine finanziellen Verbindungen mit dem Dritten Reich vielleicht enger waren als die der meisten anderen. Henry Ford war ein bekennender Bewunderer Hitlers und Ford spielte zusammen mit General Motors die wichtigste Rolle als Lieferant der Militärlaster, in denen die deutschen Truppen durch Europa rollten. Nach dem Krieg verlangten und erhielten beide Firmen Reparationen für Schäden an ihren deutschen Fabriken, die durch Bombardements der Alliierten entstanden waren.

Standard Oil und die Chase Bank, die beide von den Rockefellers kontrolliert wurden, tätigten ebenso umfangreiche Investitionen in Deutschland, wie viele der führenden Broker der Wall Street. Diese Geschäftsbeziehungen dauerten bis nach Beginn des Krieges an; Standard Oil lieferte noch 1942 über die Schweiz Benzin an die Nazis, arbeitete mit den I.G. Farben zusammen, die das Zyklon B für die Todeskammern der Nazis herstellten, und unterhielt ein Gummiwerk, in dem Sklavenarbeiter aus Auschwitz beschäftigt waren.

In einem Buch macht der ehemalige Reporter der New York Times, Charles Higham, darauf aufmerksam, dass die US-Regierung versucht hatte, die Rolle von Prescott Bush und vielen anderen führenden amerikanischen Finanz- und Industriemagnaten bei der Unterstützung Hitlers zu verschleiern.

Er schrieb, die Regierung habe befürchtet, eine Verfolgung dieser Personen würde "einen öffentlichen Skandal" verursachen und "die öffentliche Moral untergraben und Streiks und vielleicht sogar Meutereien in den Streitkräften provozieren". Außerdem glaubte die Regierung, schrieb Higham, "ihre Anklage und Verurteilung würde es den Unternehmensvorständen unmöglich machen, die Kriegsanstrengungen Amerikas zu unterstützen." (Trading with the Enemy: The Nazi American Money Plot 1933-1949, New York, 1983, S.xvii).

Die Roosevelt-Regierung und mächtige politische Persönlichkeiten in beiden Parteien taten ihr Bestes, um Prescott Bushs Probleme aufgrund seiner Geschäftsbeziehungen mit den Nazis abzumildern. Er wurde zum Vorsitzenden des Nationalen Kriegsrats ernannt und half mit, private Gelder für den Krieg unterstützende Wohltätigkeitsorganisationen aufzubringen. Kurz nachdem er die 1,5 Millionen Dollar für seine Anteile an Union Banking Corporation erhalten hatte, kandidierte er in Connecticut erfolgreich für den US Senat; diese Position hielt er bis 1963.

Ein beträchtlicher Teil der führenden amerikanischen Kapitalisten sympathisierte mit dem Nazismus und teilte dessen antisemitische Haltung, wenn auch nicht unbedingt so offen wie Henry Ford. Diese Stimmungen beeinflussten die amerikanische Politik auch noch nach Kriegsbeginn. So lehnte die Roosevelt-Regierung auch nur die geringste Änderung ihrer Einwanderungspolitik ab, die es den jüdischen Flüchtlingen, die vor dem Holocaust flohen, erschwerte, ins Land zu kommen, und das Militär weigerte sich, die Eisenbahngeleise nach Auschwitz zu bombardieren, mit der Begründung, dies sei ein "nicht-militärisches Ziel".

Während Bushs Redenschreiber die amerikanische Politik gerne in moralisch absoluten Begriffen darstellen - den Kampf des Guten gegen das Böse - zeigt die Bilanz der Komplizenschaft der amerikanischen herrschenden Klasse mit Nazi-Deutschland - und das betrifft ganz besonders die Bush-Familie -, dass die einzige Konstante die Verteidigung der Macht und Privilegien der herrschenden Oligarchie ist, gleich welche Mittel zu ihrer Durchsetzung nötig sind.

In den dreißiger und vierziger Jahren brachte diese vorrangige Erwägung George W. Bushs Großvater dazu, profitable Handelsbeziehungen zu den Nazis zu knüpfen. In den Achtzigern war sie die Grundlage für die Allianz, die - zu keinem geringen Teil vom Vater des heutigen Präsidenten, George Bush Senior - mit den islamischen Fundamentalisten im Krieg gegen das sowjetgestützte Regime in Afghanistan geschmiedet wurde. Heute steht sie im Zentrum der Politik von Bush Junior, von Militarismus und Kolonialismus im Ausland sowie Repressionen und sozialen Angriffen im Inland.

Völliger Quatsch. Die Familie Bin Laden besteht aus Hunderten Mitgliedern, die heute mit dem schwarzen Schaf der Familie, Osama, nichts zu tun haben wollen.

Seit Jahrzehnten machen Hunderte amerikanischen and europäischen Firmen Geschäfte mit der Bin-Laden-Familie. Das ist doch die größte Baufirma der moslemischen Welt. Mit dieser Firma Geschäfte zu machen ist eine ganze normale Sache.

Ähnliches hier. Tausende amerikanische und europäische Firmen haben Geschäftsverbindungen mit Nazi-Deutschland in den 30er Jahren gehabt.

Australische Firmen haben Japan mit Rohstoffen beliefert, mit denen die Japaner Waffen und Munitionen herstellten. Im zweiten Weltkrieg wurde dieses Kriegsmaterial benutzt, um australische Soldaten zu töten.

Jetzt weil er solche Geschäfte betrieben hat, wie Tausende andere Amerikaner und Europäer auch - eigentlich quasi die gesamte europäische und amerikanische Industrie - soll der Großvater von Bush mitverantwortlich für den Holocaust sein.

Viele diesen Vorwürfe gegen die Bush-Familie stammen von Michael Moore und sind in vielen Büchern und Artikeln längst diskreditiert worden. Kein namenhafter Historiker nimmt sie ernst. Das ist Politik und Geschichte für pubertierende Pisa-Studie- Underperformers.

Ich bin einfach nicht Ihrer Meinung.

Steuern müssen runter, statt rauf. Ist doch klar, daß D am Ende ist.

Immer schön den kleinen Mann ausziehen. Ist doch kein Wunder, daß der Einzelhandel den Bach runtergeht.

Als Lösung nun: Öffnungszeiten bis 24.00 Uhr!

Tolles Konzept kann ich nur sagen. Meine Frau betreibt 3 Textilgeschäfte in der Stadt und die Öffnungszeiten haben weder mehr Geld noch mehr Kunden in den Laden gebracht. Alles totaler Schwachsinn.

Nachdem der Merkel einfach nichts mehr auf die ganzen Probleme im Lande einfällt: Neue Straßen müssen her, neue Verkehrswege erschlossen werden. Echt klasse, vielleicht sollte man eher mal am Spritpreis, bzw. die Steuern senken. In Lybien kostet der Liter Benzin 9 Cent. Da sieht man mal, wie der Staat uns abzockt.

Rauchen will man einschränken, Ende vom Lied:

Die Zigarttenfabrik in der Stadt baut bis zu 1000 Jobs ab. Das können wir echt gut gebrauchen. Die Leute hier in der Umgebung würden der Merkel am Liebsten eine Tomate ins Gesicht klatschen.

Aber was soll man viel darüber diskutieren, ich wähle das nächste mal FDP oder Linke. Mal sehen, wer das bessere Konzept hat. Merkel hat mich auf alle Fälle mehr als enttäuscht. Die Frau ist einfach unfähig.

Die Friedenspolitik ist noch viel schlimmer. 16 Jahre Kohl + 8 Jahre Schröder alles für die Katz!

Können wir da für jeden unserer eigenen Vorfahren das moralisch einwandfreie und politisch korrekte Testat auf deren Grabstein kleben?

Tja, beim Präsidenten Bush, den ich übrigens überhaupt nicht schätze und den ich für einen der gefährlichsten Menschen der Jetztzeit halte, gerade weil er bei seiner geradezu kindlichen Einfaltslosigkeit und Eingleisigkeit soviel Macht in den Händen hat, beim Präsidenten Bush nun buddeln einige Leute und finden wahre oder auch nur eingebildete Verbindungen zwischen dem Großvater von George W. und den Nazis. Dass es schwer sein dürfte, Wirtschaftsgrößen der damaligen Zeit zu finden, die ganz konsequent jede Zusammenarbeit mit den Nazis abgelehnt haben oder bei der Verquickung von Unternehmen sogar ganz gezielt hätten vermeiden können, spielt in den Augen dieser "Aufklärer" keine Rolle. Schlimmer noch: Sie generieren eine Sippenhaft. George W. ist nicht nur für seine eigenen Aktionen haftbar, nein, er muß auch noch für seinen Großvater herhalten, auch wenn Georgie-Porgie 1945 noch ein absolut geiler Gedanke seiner Eltern war und noch im großen Tümpelchen schwamm mit Bienchen und Blümchen. Nun, wenn man Ideologie verbreiten möchte, ist manchen Leuten halt nichts zu schade, wenn man andere Menschen diskreditieren möchte. Das hat mit seriöser Aufklärung nichts mehr zu tun...

Ich habe einen Weg zu einem freieren Leben gezeigt. Gehen muss ihn jeder selber. Ich trage niemandem was hinterher. Ich will auch nix hinterhergetragen bekommen.

Islamismus, Rechtsradikalismus, Bürokratismus, Arbeitslosigkeit, Korruption ... das sind alles nur Symptome. Man könnte sie alle sofort lösen. Man muss es nur wollen. Möchtest Du dazu etwas beitragen, bist Du herzlich im u. g. Sräd eingeladen, Deine Meinungen zu verkünden.

Jau, paßt doch mit den Verschwörungstheorien...

Wie die Bilderberg-Gruppe steht auch die Trilaterale Kommission immer wieder im Fokus von Verschwörungstheorien, wie sie teilen sie den Washington Consensus. Man sagt der trilateralen Kommission nach, sie strebe "Global Governance" an, was als "Governance without Governments" zu verstehen ist. Die TK ist jedoch nur ein, wenn auch einflussreicher Teil in einem wachsenden transnationalen Politiknetzwerk, das man wiederum als Teil von Global Governance verstehen kann. Die Macht, die die TK ausübt, funktioniert in erster Linie über Ideen, die Entscheidungsträger miteinander austauschen. Diese sind nicht geheim, sondern können öffentlich nachvollzogen werden. Die TK ist eine (neo)liberal orientierte Institution der transnationalen Zivilgesellschaft, die natürlich auch Einfluss auf das Handeln von Regierungen hat.

The aggressive new campaign by the administration of President George W. Bush to depict U.S. foes in the Middle East as "fascists" and its domestic critics as "appeasers" owes a great deal to steadily intensifying efforts by the right-wing press over the past several months to draw the same comparison.

The Rupert Murdoch-owned Fox News Network and The Weekly Standard, as well as the Washington Times, which is controlled by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church, and the neoconservative New York Sun, have consistently and with increasing frequency framed the challenges faced by Washington in the region in the context of the rise of fascism and Nazism in the 1930s, according to a search of the Nexis database by IPS.

All of those outlets, as well as two other right-wing U.S. magazines - The National Review and The American Spectator - far outpaced their commercial rivals in the frequency of their use of key words and names, such as "appeasement," "fascism," and "Hitler," particularly with respect to Iran and its controversial president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Nexis, for example, cited 56 uses of "Islamofascist" or "Islamofascism" in separate programs or segments aired by Fox News compared with 24 by CNN over the past year. Even more striking, the same terms were used in 115 different articles or columns in the Washington Times, compared with only eight in the Washington Post over the same period, according to a breakdown by Nexis.

Similarly, the Washington Times used the words "appease" or "appeasement" - a derogatory reference to efforts by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain to avoid war with Nazi Germany before the latter's invasion of Poland - in 25 different articles or columns that dealt with alleged threats posed by Ahmadinejad, compared to six in the Post and only three in the New York Times.

Israel-centered neoconservatives and other hawks have long tried to depict foreign challenges to U.S. power as replays of the 1930s in order to rally public opinion behind foreign interventions and high defense budgets and against domestic critics.

During the Cold War, they attacked domestic critics of the Vietnam War and later the Ronald Reagan administration's "contra war" against Nicaragua - and even Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon - as "isolationists" and "appeasers" who failed to understand that their opposition effectively served the interests of an "evil" Soviet Union whose ambitions for world conquest were every bit as threatening and real as that of the Axis powers in World War II.

Known as "the Good War," that conflict remains irresistible as a point of comparison for hawks caught up in more recent conflicts - from the first Gulf War when former President H.W. Bush compared Iraq's Saddam Hussein to Hitler; to the Balkan wars when neoconservatives and liberal interventionists alike described Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic in similar terms; to the younger Bush's "global war on terrorism" (GWOT), which he and his supporters have repeatedly tried to depict as the latest in a series of existential struggles against "evil" and "totalitarians" that began with World War II.

Given the growing public disillusionment not only with the Iraq war, but with Bush's handling of the larger GWOT as well - not to mention the imminence of the mid-term Congressional elections in November and the growing tensions with Ahmadinejad's Iran over its nuclear program - it is hardly surprising that both the administration and its hawkish supporters are trying harder than ever to identify their current struggles, including last month's conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah, specifically with the war against "fascism" more than 60 years ago.

As noted by Associated Press (AP) this week, "fascism" or "Islamic fascism," a phrase used by Bush himself two weeks ago and used to encompass everything from Sunni insurgents, al-Qaeda and Hamas to Shi'ite Hezbollah and Iran to secular Syria, has become the "new buzzword" for Republicans.

In a controversial speech Tuesday, Pentagon chief Donald Rumsfeld was even more direct, declaring that Washington faced a "new type of fascism" and, in an explicit reference to the failure of western countries to confront Hitler in the 1930s, assailing critics for neglecting "history's lessons" by "believ(ing) that somehow vicious extremists can be appeased."

But Rumsfeld's remarks, which drew bitter retorts from leading Democrats, followed a well-worn path trod with increasing intensity by the neoconservative and right-wing media over the last year, according to the Nexis survey. Significantly, it did not include the Wall Street Journal whose editorial pages have been dominated by neoconservative opinion, particularly analogies between the rise of fascism and the challenges faced by the U.S. in the Middle East, since 9/11.

Thus, the Washington Times published 95 articles and columns that featured the words "fascism" or "fascist" and "Iraq" over the past year, twice as many as appeared in the New York Times during the same period. More than half of the Washington Times' articles were published in just the past three months - three times as many as appeared in the New York Times.

Similarly, the National Review led all magazines and journals with 66 such references over the past year, followed by 48 in The American Spectator, and 14 by The Weekly Standard. Together, those three publications accounted for more than half of all articles with those words published by the more than three dozen U.S. periodicals catalogued by Nexis since last September.

The results were similar for "appease" or "appeasement" and "Iraq." Led by the Review, the same three journals accounted for more than half the articles (175) that included those words in some three dozen U.S. Magazines over the past year. As for newspapers, the Washington Times led the list with 46 articles, 50 percent more than the New York Times which also had fewer articles than its crosstown neoconservative rival, the much-smaller New York Sun.

Searching on Nexis for articles and columns that included "Iran" and "fascist" or "fascism," IPS found that the Sun and the Times topped the newspaper list by a substantial margin, as did the Review, the Spectator, and the Standard among the magazines and journals. Nearly one-third of all such references over the past year were published in August, according to the survey.

Nexis, which also surveys the Canadian press, found that newspapers owned by CanWest Global Communications, a group that owns the country's Global Television Network, as well as the National Post, the Ottawa Citizen, and the Montreal Gazette and several other regional newspapers, were also among the most consistent propagators of the "fascism" paradigm and ranked far ahead of other Canadian outlets in the frequency with which they used key words, such as "appeasement" and "fascist" in connection with Iraq and Iran.

The group is run by members of the Asper family whose foreign policy views have been linked to prominent hardline neoconservatives here and the right-wing Likud Party in Israel.

Ich halte von Ideologien generell nicht viel, also auch nicht von der These des angeblich weltumspannenden Islamofaschismus. Kannst du das umgekehrt auch von dir hinsichtlich der unzäligen Verschwörungstheorien, dein politisches Feindbild betreffend, behaupten? Dein Posting, auf das ich verwiesen hatte, und deine Quellen lassen häufig anderes vermuten. Aber ich lasse mich in Zukunft gerne vom Gegenteil überzeugen, dass du auch mal wenigstens im Kleinen Gutes bei deiner Gegenseite findest und Schlechtes auf deiner Seite, du abwägst und siehst, dass es kein reines Schwarz und kein reines Weiß gibt...

Na, vielleicht ist es mir auch nicht so ernst. Ich habe eh ausgesorgt.

Mein Konzept, oder von mir aus Rahmen, kann man auch als Individuum gut leben. Statt sich den ganzen Rummel mit Zwangsversicherungen und hohen Steuern als Lohnsklave anzutun, kann man sich das entweder als Freiberufler mit niedrigen Kosten und dann auch niedrigen Einnahmen ohne oder mit (noch) sehr geringen Steuern oder als Hartz4-Kunde sparen.

Dieser Staat steuert auf das Ziel zu, was (fast) alle wollen. Freibier für alle. Es ist eben nur die Frage, wie lange es dauert bis es soweit ist, dass der Staat an der Realität scheitert.

Gold ist Gold, egal woher

Gold und Wertpapiere, Kunstwerke und Geld: In den USA lagern noch heute Milliardenwerte, die den ermordeten europäischen Juden gehört haben. Eine vom Kongress beauftragte "Presidential Advisory Commission", die sich damit befasste, hat nun in Washington ihren Bericht vorgestellt - praktisch unbeachtet von den Medien.

Die Kommission unter dem Vorsitz von Edgar Bronfman, dem Vorsitzenden des World Jewish Congress (WJC), hatte nach Konten auf US-Banken gesucht, nach von US-Soldaten gestohlenen Kunstwerken, nach Raubgold (Gold von Nationalbanken der von Deutschland überfallenen Länder bis hin zu Zahnfüllungen von KZ-Insassen) und nach Geld von Holocaust- Opfern, das in den USA beschlagnahmt worden war.

Das Fazit ist wenig schmeichelhaft für die USA: Statt den Holocaust-Opfern ihr Geld zurückzugeben, seien damit US-Firmen kompensiert worden, deren deutsche Töchter Kriegsschäden erlitten hatten. Die USA hätten darin versagt, Opfern zu helfen, wichtige Unterlagen seien vernichtet worden. Auch hätten US-Soldaten KZ-Überlebende misshandelt und in den Lagern hinter Stacheldraht festgehalten. "Es sieht so aus, als ob wir die Juden so behandeln wie die Nazis, nur dass wir sie nicht ausrotten", zitiert der Bericht Earl Harrison, den damaligen Commissioner for Immigration, der im Sommer 1945 Deutschland besuchte.


Warum haben sich die USA erst so spät damit befasst? "Mir wäre es auch lieber gewesen, das wäre fünfzig Jahre eher geschehen", sagt Elan Steinberg, Sprecher des WJC. "Aber die Probleme in den USA sind eben nicht so groß wie in Europa." Das Wichtigste sei, dass die USA nun die Wahrheit ans Licht gebracht hätten. Und: Es habe vor allem "Irrtümer und Unsensibilitäten" gegeben. "Aber insgesamt stehen wir gut da." Druck auf die US-Regierung oder auf Banken auszuüben, dass tatsächlich bezahlt wird, hält Steinberg für unnötig. Es gebe ja Vereinbarungen für eine freiwillige Rückgabe.


Raubgold in US-Tresoren


Aber nicht da, wo es Geld kostet. Beispiel Raubgold. Dem Bericht zufolge lagert Raubgold auch in den Tresoren der Federal Reserve Bank. Hintergrund: Die USA hatten ab 1934 systematisch Gold aufgekauft. Bis 1945 flossen 16 Milliarden US-Dollar an ausländischem Gold in die USA, davon 753 Millionen aus Deutschland, Italien und Japan - dies ist, wie alle folgenden Zahlen, der damalige Wert, heute ist es mehr als das Zehnfache.

Den US-Behörden war klar, aus welchen Quellen das Gold der Achsenmächte stammte. Denn bereits 1940, als die Wehrmacht Frankreich, Belgien und Holland besetzt hatte, versuchte die britische Botschaft das US-Finanzministerium dazu zu bewegen, kein Gold aus Deutschland mehr zu kaufen; es sei vermutlich geplündert. Aber Henry Dexter White, Chef der Division of Monetary Research, wehrte sich wiederholt gegen jedes Importverbot. Wenn die USA Gold als internationales Zahlungsmittel nutzen wollten, so White, müssten sie alles Gold akzeptieren, ohne nach der Herkunft zu fragen. Die USA haben laut Bericht sogar nach dem Krieg Barren gekauft, unter denen sie Raubgold vermuten mussten.


Zweites Beispiel: Vermögen in den USA. Bereits während des Krieges wurde Geld und Grundbesitz von in den USA lebenden "enemy aliens" (Ausländer aus Feindesland) eingefroren. Das betraf auch, wie Earl Harrison damals beklagte, "Personen, die gegen Hitler gekämpft haben oder in Konzentrationslagern waren".


Nach 1945 wurde das Vermögen von Deutschen, Japanern, Bulgaren, Rumänen, Ungarn und Italienern in den USA beschlagnahmt: allein von deutschen Privatleuten 188 Millionen US-Dollar. Wobei auch hier kein Unterschied zwischen Juden und Nichtjuden gemacht wurde. Das betraf Konten, die Wohlhabende im Ausland angelegt hatten, aber auch von Immigranten und Flüchtlingen ohne US-Pass. Das Geld wurde in einen "War Claims Fund" eingespeist, aus dem Kriegsschäden deutscher Töchter von US-Firmen bezahlt wurden. Darunter waren auch Ford und General Motors, deren Ableger Zwangsarbeiter beschäftigt hatten. "So wurden US-Forderungen teilweise mit deutschen Geldern beglichen, die aus Vermögen von Opfern stammten", heißt es in dem Bericht.


Erst 1946 beschlossen die USA, Konten von NS-Opfern möglichst nicht mehr anzutasten. Solche Gelder wurden nun sogar zurückgegeben, allerdings nur auf Antrag, und der musste bis 1955 gestellt werden. Jedoch sperrten sich sowohl der War Claims Fund als auch das dafür zuständige Office for Alien Property prinzipiell gegen Rückzahlungen. 1953 stellte der US-Senat fest, dass das Office "ineffizient und säumig" arbeite und über drei Jahre pro Fall brauche.


Keine Rückgabepflicht


Drittes Beispiel: Konten, die europäische Juden in den USA angelegt hatten, während sie auf ein Visum hofften. Der Volcker Commission zufolge, die von 1997 bis 1999 nach nachrichtenlosen Konten bei Schweizer Banken gesucht hat, haben europäische Juden etwa drei Milliarden US-Dollar ins Ausland retten können. Davon ist, sehr grob geschätzt, eine Milliarde Dollar in die USA gegangen, insbesondere aus Frankreich, Holland und Polen. Heute wären das zehn Milliarden. Da aber die USA nur wenige Flüchtlinge aufgenommen hatten, ging ein Teil dieser Gelder verloren.

Seymour Rubin, in den Fünfzigerjahren Mitarbeiter im US-Außenministerium, hatte damals versucht, einiges davon zu retten, aber mit wenig Erfolg. Der Kongress bewilligte 1963 nur die Auszahlung von 500.000 Dollar. Dies sei zu wenig gewesen, räumt die Kommission heute ein. Das Geld ging zudem nicht an die Erben der Besitzer, sondern an eine jüdische Hilfsorganisation, die das meiste darauf verwandte, Wohnungen für Holocaust-Überlebende in New York zu bauen.


Der Bericht empfiehlt nun, dass Banken freiwillig nach nachrichtenlosen Konten suchen. Ob dort aber noch Geld zu finden ist, ist fraglich. US-Banken sind verpflichtet, solche Konten nach fünf Jahren an den Staat abzugeben. Aber dort hat die Kommission nicht gesucht. Seymour Rubin ist enttäuscht. "Die Kommission ist um die ganze Welt gereist, hat Unkosten gemacht, aber wozu?", fragt er. "Es ist völlig klar, dass die USA Geld von Holocaust-Opfern behalten haben. Aber weder die Regierung noch die Banken sind dazu verpflichtet worden, es zurückzugeben."


Kriegsbeute in die USA


Viertes Beispiel: Beschlagnahmungen in Europa. Allein in Deutschland hat die US-Armee bis 1948 Kunst im Wert von rund fünf Milliarden US-Dollar sichergestellt, dazu Gold, Schmuck und hunderte von Millionen US-Dollar. Vieles davon hatte die SS zuvor Holocaust-Opfern geraubt und in Minen oder Bergwerken versteckt. Ein Teil davon wurde ganz offiziell als Kriegsbeute in die USA geschafft. Anderes wurde von Soldaten geplündert, da die Armee die Lagerstätten oft schlecht gesichert hatte. "Jede Armee der Welt plündert, das ist nicht zu verhindern", sagt WJC- Sprecher Elan Steinberg dazu. Einige Wertgegenstände haben die USA später zurückgegeben, aber nicht an die Besitzer, sondern an deutsche Behörden, wobei es bei der Rückgabe ohnehin selten eine Rolle gespielt hat, ob das Gut Nazis oder Nazi-Opfern gehört hatte.


Nun soll das US-Verteidigungsministerium unter Armee-Veteranen dafür werben, geplünderte Kunst zurückzugeben. Von offizieller Seite wurden bislang elf Gemälde zurückgegeben, die in der National Gallery of Art in Washington hingen. Des Weiteren hat die Kommission in der Library of Congress 2.600 Bücher aus jüdischen Besitz gefunden, wobei nur 5 Prozent des Bestandes untersucht wurden.

Hallo und guten Tag!

Nein, lange wird es wohl nicht mehr dauern. Fragt sich nur, ob es dann besser wird. Und wenn, wie lange. Schon die alten Philosophen kannten ja das Dilemma mit der Bürokratie.

Für D sehe ich eher schwarz. Ich bin ja eher Optimist. Aber wir hatten schon lange keinen Krieg mehr und die ganzen neunmalklugen Sozis mit ihrer Amihetze wollen ihr Testosteron ausleben. Unterstützt von unseren moslemischen Freunden, die uns hier so tagtäglich den Frieden bringen.

Aber ein bischen kämpfe ich ja auch für ein freieres Leben hier. Wenn ich wohl auch nicht ewig hier bleibe. Die ersten Fäden sind bereits geknüpft.
