Mountain Province, De Beers mull 4,5m ct/y operation at Gahcho Kué

TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – A definitive feasibility will be completed by mid-year on the Gahcho Kué diamond project, in Canada's Northwest Territories, junior miner Mountain Province Diamonds confirmed on Monday.

Mountain Province owns 49% of the asset and De Beers Canada holds the balance.

Key elements of the feasibility study, including the mine schedule, pit design, waste dump design, process plant design, and waste and water management are “advancing satisfactorily”, Mountain Province said in a statement.

A final draft of the Gahcho Kué project description has been presented to the partners and, once completed, the project description will be incorporated into the environmental impact statement (EIS), which will be submitted to the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board.

The draft project description includes an average yearly production rate of about three-million tons of ore, and a yearly production rate of around 4,5-million carats.

The life of mine from the openpit resource is estimated at some 12 years.

However, Mountain Province emphasised that these parameters remain subject to final review, confirmation and approval by De Beers and itself.

The finalisation of the EIS is running in parallel with the feasibility study, so that permitting for the project can be completed as soon as possible.

The Gahcho Kué project consists of a cluster of kimberlites, three of which have an indicated resource of about 30,2-million tons grading at 1,67 ct/t, or about 50,5-million carats.

There is also an inferred resource of about six-million tons grading at 1,73 ct/t, for around 10,3-million carats.

In July 2009, De Beers Canada and Mountain Province agreed to revise their joint venture on the project.

De Beers had been sole funding work as part of an earn-in agreement, but the companies decided that the ownership split would stay at current levels, and the partners would fund their respective share of spending.

U.K.-listed mining company Vatukoula Gold Mines PLC (VGM.LN) is expected to announce Monday that it has found more gold at its existing gold mine on the Asia-Pacific island of Fiji, The Independent on Sunday reports without citing sources.

David Paxton, the company's chief executive, is expected to announce Monday that the company has drilled new holes in the area where its existing Fijian mine is located and struck gold each time, the newspaper reported.

The Fijian mine produces 40,000 troy ounces of gold a year and is seeking to expand the mine, the newspaper reported.

      January 22, 2010

Coastal Energy’s First Exploration Well On The Songkhla B Field Offshore Thailand Proves A Little Disappointing But Hopes Remain High For Other Drilling In The Basin

Well, Randy Bartley, CEO of Toronto and London Aim listed Coastal Energy, always said he thought exploiting the Songkhla B field, on the company’s 100 per cent owned Block G5/43 in the Gulf of Thailand, would be geologically more testing than Songkhla Block A or Songkhla “Main” as it has become known.

It looks as if Randy was right, initially at least. The company has recently announced disappointing results from the first exploration well on Songkhla B, Songkhla B-01. This was spudded in early January and was drilled to a total measured depth of 9,050 feet targeting multiple objectives to the east of the main North-South fault that bisects Songkhla B.

Despite encountering oil bearing sands within the Lower Oligocene, a breaching of the trap resulted in only 10 feet of net pay. This was in stark contrast to the 90-150 feet of net Lower Oligocene pay enjoyed in the most recent Songhkla A development wells, A-01,A-03, A-04 and A-08.

Significant hydrocarbons shows were also encountered in the deeper Eocene horizon B-01. They were accompanied, however, by low porosity and permeability. Sub-commercial on a standalone basis, the well has been temporarily abandoned pending further exploration within the Songkhla B area.

To put in a bit of context here, Coastal, which is focused on south east Asia generally but on Thailand in particular, has some gas output from the Phu Horm gas field onshore northeast Thailand. By December 2009 the company had some 2000 boepd in output from Phu Horm. Coastal, however, wanted to go for the bigger prize of oil. It had the chance to do this by revisiting an old Premier Oil discovery on the Songkhla A field.

Songkhla was discovered by Premier back in 1968 when a well tested 1,500 bopd from an 80 feet net oil column in the Lower Oligocene formation. In the economic conditions of the day the field was not deemed worth exploiting, but changes in the oil price have altered all that.

During the period late 2008 to late 2009 the series of development wells mentioned above came good (as did Coastal’s share price which more than doubled to more than 300p during the period). The company seemed on course to produce 10,000 bopd, although by end 2009 this target had slipped a bit due to technical problems. With respect to Songkhla A Coastal has now started a commercial repair operation on the A-04 well which is currently shut-in due to mechanical pump issues.

A-04 is Songkhla’s most prolific producer and, following the workover, gross field production is expected to return to some 10,000 bopd by early February. But it may temporarily be reduced again thereafter, by some 1,500 bopd for up to one month, according to house broker Thomas Weisel Partners, to enable larger pumps to be installed on wells A-01 and A-03.

With Songkhla A up and running in a major way Coastal wanted to move quickly on to Songkhla B. A difference between “A” and “B” is that there has not actually been any drilling on “B” so that the wells now are exploration rather than development wells. Nevertheless the 3D seismic on “B” held by Coastal has led the company to believe the two structures (east and west of the fault )are highly prospective.

Thomas Weisel has conservatively estimated that there are unrisked exploration prospects of 9.9 million boe with a 50 per cent drilling Chance of Success (CoS) so the story here is not over yet. Coastal is now mobilising the drilling rig to the B-02 prospect which lies on the western flank of the main Songkhla B fault block. We can expect results it seems within one or two weeks.

Furthermore, Coastal has many further prospects and discoveries identified within the Songkhla Basin, which provide risk diversification. Once the B-02 well is completed the drilling rig will move to the Benjarong prospect where up to three wells could be drilled (on both Benjarong and Benjarong East). Thomas Weisel has put unrisked exploration prospects at 36.5 million boe but with a CoS of just 20 per cent.

After that Coastal would move to develop the Bua Ban field. There has been drilling here before. On a development /P2 (proven and probable) basis Thomas Weisel has estimated reserves in place of 21.8 million boe with a 67 per cent CoS. So Coastal has still a lot to play for offshore Thailand.

      18 January 2010

Further to the announcement made on 17 December 2009, Noventa is pleased to announce the finalization of its strategic plan for restoring production at the Marropino mine and the recruitment of a Portuguese speaking Mozambican engineering manager. The previous mistakes in extraction and production as well as the process design have been identified and verified by test and inspection. The new plan, that has been subjected to peer review, avoids these pitfalls, while allowing the maximum reuse of existing equipment, much of which has been refurbished during the past few months. New equipment is being purchased from standard production items that can be modularized for installation to further reduce technical risk and can later be used in other locations.

Now that Noventa's design for its Marropino mine is finalized, the directors continue to expect that initial production will commence around March 2010. The first phase will use previously mined tailings, followed by a later phase using the previously mined and rejected oversize material. The final phase will be the restoration of the pit and the processing of the main ore body. This phased approach allows a steady build up of production, confirming each stage of the process plant and developing the competence of operation and its new team in a controlled and measured way. The three phases are planned to be complete this year. Mr. Peter Cox is the project director, where his extensive experience of mine design and mine operation - including specific experience of tantalum mining operations in Africa, will ensure optimum performance.

As part of the implementation plan, and in order to minimize shareholder risk, the Company will recommence the processing operation with specific performance bonds in place to meet pre-set goals, including incentives for exceeding performance targets and corresponding penalties for the underperformance.
Noventa announced on 20 November 2009 that an exploration program was being designed to evaluate the Company's other licence areas in Mozambique. As the first phase of this program, the Company will undertake geological work at Mutala in the next few weeks.

This geological investigation is part of the development of a National Instrument 43-101 compliant report on the Company's licence areas, in preparation for a possible Toronto Stock Exchange dual listing later in the year.
In addition to the recruitment of a Mozambican Engineering Manager, Noventa is also strengthening the local managerial and administrative team with Mozambique staff at its operational headquarters in Maputo, Mozambique, led by the CEO and CFO, further reinforcing the Company's commitment to local representation in Mozambique.

Commenting, Eric Kohn TD, Chairman of Noventa said: "We continue to be encouraged by the anticipated commencement of economic production of tantalum concentrate from the Marropino site shortly, having taken steps to minimize risks where possible and to ensure that the mistakes of the past are not repeated. The mission is to be an efficient low cost producer of tantalum concentrate. We are consciously working so that our only operating subsidiary in Mozambique will be a good citizen with best practice and a social economic strategy at the same time as maximizing shareholder value. Our CEO John Allan and his team have worked extremely hard to achieve this approach which was agreed and communicated to shareholders when our team assumed control."

Novus Gold Corp.: SIEBEN KILOMETER LANGE GOLDZONE IDENTIFIZIERT

Vancouver (British Columbia), 15. Januar 2010. Novus Gold Corp.

Dezember 2009 $ 1,5 Millionen an Ausgaben leisten.

Novus Gold Corp.: Seven Kilometre Long Gold Zone Identified
      1/15/2010 3:25:00 AM ET

      CCNMatthews

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Jan. 15, 2010) - Novus Gold Corp. (TSX VENTURE:NOV.H) ("Novus" or "the Company") is pleased to announce surface sampling results from its REN gold property in the Northwest Territories carried out in partnership with Terra Ventures Inc. ("Terra") (TSX VENTURE:TAS). This sampling program traced gold mineralization and iron formation over a length of 7 kilometres.

Just prior to freeze-up, a limited prospecting program was completed on the REN property. A total of 83 samples were collected and submitted for gold analysis. The samples were collected along the more than seven kilometre long iron formation within the REN property that includes the Main occurrence where a recent drill program was carried out. Most of the samples came from known occurrences other than the Main occurrence, however, five samples collected 400 metres northwest of the most northerly gold occurrence, Grizz, reported values between 1.51 and 6.25 g/t and represent a new gold discovery. Grab samples (7) of the Grizz occurrence ranged from 3.10 to 38.40 g/t gold and grab samples (3) collected 300 m south of the Grizz occurrence ranged from 0.02 to 2.13 g/t gold. Two more grab samples were collected a further 500 m south, ranged from 0.53 to 5.27 g/t gold, and were located approximately 300 m north of the geophysical anomaly coincident with the Main occurrence.

The Banner, Flag and Gord occurrences are located along the southern half of the iron formation, more than 3 kilometres south of the Main occurrence. Grab samples (17) collected from the Banner occurrence ranged from 0.07 to 205.00 g/t gold and grab samples (12) collected from the Flag occurrence ranged from 0.02 to 22.40 g/t gold. No samples were collected from the most southerly located Gord occurrence (approximately 5 kilometres south of the Main occurrence), however, previously completed sampling reported a chip sample value of 17.5 g/t across 0.8 metres. The Moore occurrence is situated approximately 1 kilometre south of the Main occurrence. Grab samples (9) collected from the Moore occurrence varied from 0.06 to 2.88 g/t gold. The remaining 33 samples collected ranged from 0.01 to 2.66 g/t gold.

Ongoing reinterpretation of the associations and controls related to the gold occurrences of the REN property has discovered the potential for a high-tonnage low-grade deposit along a more than seven kilometre strike of iron formation. Previous exploration had focused on Lupin-style gold mineralization where gold occurs concentrated in the "nose" of a folded iron formation. Recent drill results acquired from the Main occurrence indicate that significant gold is present in the host rocks adjacent to the iron formation. As a result, the main zone of gold mineralization is now considered to have an apparent width of 8 to 30 metres with gold grades ranging from 2 to 3 g/t. Grab samples collected while prospecting demonstrate that at least portions of the entire seven kilometre long iron formation is associated with significant gold mineralization. As with the exploration completed at the Main occurrence, much of the work evaluating the gold potential of the iron formation focused strictly on high-grade gold in the iron formation, including the recently reported grab samples reported above. The host rock along the seven kilometre long iron formation has not been adequately sampled so as to assess the potential for wide, low-grade gold zones.

Drill hole results from the Main occurrence within the REN property clearly indicate a previously unrecognized wide, low-grade gold zone associated with the iron formation. Gold assay values ranging between 2 to 3 g/t were reported for intersections that ranged from 10.62 to 32.77 metre. Based on previously completed geophysical work, the magnetic and electromagnetic anomaly directly associated with the wide, low-grade gold mineralization, is more than 700 metres long. Drilling has shown the zone to be open at depth.

The REN property hosts banded iron formation gold showings in the Point Lake area, approximately 90 kilometres southwest of the formerly producing Lupin gold mine owned by Echo Bay Mines. Approximately 30 drill holes were completed on gold showings on the REN property between 1974 and 1990 by Texasgulf, Cominco and Westview.

All samples were submitted to ALS Laboratory, North Vancouver, an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory that includes the determination of gold by fire assay and atomic absorption as part of its scope of accreditation. Blanks were added to the submitted samples to test for cross contamination and all samples submitted were reported within acceptable levels.

Novus has granted Terra an option to earn a 51-per-cent interest in the REN property. In order to exercise the option, Terra needed to incur $1.5-million in expenditures on the REN property by Dec. 31, 2009. Terra is in the process of giving Novus confirmation that this has been done. Once Terra formally exercises its option, Novus will have the option to repurchase Terra's 51-per-cent interest by issuing 7.5 million shares to Terra. Based on Novus's current 33,585,000 issued shares, if Novus exercises its option, Terra would have 18.25 per cent of Novus's shares.
