Detour Gold – Grobe Kurzanalyse
WKN: A0LG70
Detour Gold will ab 2011 Gold in Ontario/Kanada fördern.

The Chinese Gain A Strategic Stake In Altona Resources’ Huge Arckaringa Coal-To-Liquids Project
By Charles Wyatt
It’s quite difficult for investors to get their minds round Aim-traded Altona Resources. Here’s an Aim-traded company capitalised at less than £15 million - even after a recent funding – that’s working through pre-feasibility towards a bankable feasibility on the Arckaringa project in South Australia. Ackaringa contains more than 7.5 billion tonnes of coal deposits, making it one of the largest undeveloped energy banks in the world.
It ought to be possible to convert this coal into clean liquid fuels to generate low cost power or high value industrial feedstocks, so the study is focussed on the development of an integrated 10 million barrel per year coal-to-liquid plant with a 560 MW co-generation power facility, which should be operating for the next 75 years.
Just stop for a moment and consider the task ahead of chairman Chris Lambert and his managing director Chris Schrape. Looked at from a practical point of view it might be thought impossible for such a tiny company to raise sufficient funding to advance this project much further without diluting existing shareholders out of existence or selling off the majority of the asset to a major. But these two chaps are determined to squeeze out maximum value, and they have the expertise to do it.
Chris Schrape was previously chief executive of Griffin Coal. Before that he spent some 20 years with Rio Tinto in a variety of senior management and marketing roles, including as marketing manager with PT Kaltim Prima Coal in Indonesia. More recently, Chris was engaged as marketing adviser to Asia Energy regarding the coal marketing and related aspects of the definitive feasibility study on the Phulbari coal project in Bangladesh.
He is the coal expert based in Australia, while Chris Lambert, operating out of England, is the financial wizard. He headed up London and global trading for Elders Financial Group, and worked for the Rural and Industries Bank of Western Australia, Barclays Bank and Prudential Securities (USA) over a period of more than 20 years. During his time at these companies his duties included managing global dealing operations in the major financial centres of the world, and the structuring of corporate and project finance transactions for governments, central banks, industrial companies and mining houses.
Between them these two have persuaded a Hong Kong-based company, Tongjiang International Energy, to invest £11.6 million in Altona through a placing of 240 million shares at around 4.8p per share. Tongjiang is a subsidiary of Tongjiang Group which has business interests in both China and abroad, primarily in energy and resources. The money raised will provide Altona with a substantial part of the funding required to complete the final stage of the bankable feasibility study.
Just as important, it also opens the door to China, says Chris Lambert, where there is growing desire to secure distillate fuel supply. Tongjiang, he explains, has relationships in China with potential offtakers, project financiers and engineering companies which could provide great opportunities for the development of Arckaringa.
The money is coming into Altona in three tranches, with the first £1 million already in the bank. The second tranche of £2.5 million is due in mid April and the big one, £8 million, is due by the end of June. The last two tranches are subject to various conditions, including any necessary regulatory and shareholder approvals, but talks have been going on for some time and Chris does not anticipate any major problems.
When all the money is in the till Tongjiang will have a 45.9 per cent shareholding in Altona, and it is then that the serious talking will start. This is certainly not a mini project and it is reckoned that the first stage will cost around US$3.2 billion and the second stage US$1.5 billion. It will also be interesting to see what suggestions are made by the Chinese for the future. Chris Lambert will not be drawn on this at the moment, but clearly part of the plant could be built and situated in China which would reduce costs considerably in light of the high wages and strong dollar in Australia.
In the meantime the company is making steady advances with its pre-feasibility study. Drilling has completed on the Wintinna coal deposit, which, it’s anticipated, hosts 700 million tonnes of coal. It will take another couple of months to finish off the pre-feasibility study which, provided it’s positive, will lead straight on into the final feasibility stage of the bankable feasibility study. There seems little doubt about this as all the boxes are being ticked.
When we last wrote about Altona back in November we suggested that a number of major energy companies would be approaching the company once it published the pre-feasibility study. But Tongjiang did not wait and thus proved the point that battles are won by those quickest on their feet. It is now in pole position, provided the funding goes through the remaining two hoops and, as a result, should play a vital role in the production and marketing of high value liquid fuels for the Asian markets.
The question as to why investors are failing to take this point, as implied by the company’s lacklustre share price, is answered only by looking towards the chaos American banks have spread throughout world stock markets.
