Was meint Ihr ?

CIBC announced its top picks in Biotechnology for 2001: Amgen (AMGN), Cell Therapeutics (CTIC), Enzon (ENZN),
Imclone Systems (IMCL), NPS Pharmaceuticals (NPSP), Praecis Pharmacueticals (PRCS), Protein Design Labs (PDLI),
Tanox Inc (TNOX) and Xoma (XOMA). The Firm cited all these companies are poised either for major product launches in
the next 12-18 months or advanced stage products in development that target large markets.

@mahatma
@Börsenguru

Also bis bald. Xoma kommt irgendwann sicher wieder in mein Depot!

Onyx and Xoma Establish Strategic Process Development and Manufacturing Relationship
BERKELEY, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--Jan. 29, 2001--Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq:ONXX - news) and XOMA Ltd. (Nasdaq:XOMA - news) today announced that they have agreed to a strategic process development and manufacturing relationship under which XOMA will scale-up production to commercial volume and manufacture Onyx`s CI-1042 (also known as ONYX-015), a therapeutic product to treat cancer. CI-1042, which is being developed in collaboration with Pfizer Inc., is currently in Phase III testing for head and neck cancer.
The initial term of the agreement will be for five years, with options to extend for additional three-year periods. XOMA will produce material for use in clinical testing as well as for commercial sales upon approval. As part of its development commitment XOMA will increase the fermentation volume to commercial scale, improve the purification process, and seek FDA licensure of its manufacturing facility for CI-1042.
While dependent on the pace and outcome of clinical trials, regulatory approvals, sales volume and other factors, the financial scope of the agreement during the initial five-year period is projected to exceed $35 million.
``I`m pleased to be embarking upon this relationship with Onyx,`` said Jack Castello, Chairman, President, and CEO of XOMA. ``It allows XOMA to further leverage the core manufacturing and development competencies that attracted the anti-CD11a collaboration with Genentech, and gives us an economic interest in a promising late-stage cancer therapeutic. Our objective is to have a financially attractive relationship from XOMA`s perspective while at the same time delivering substantial value to Onyx. This agreement further validates our development and manufacturing strategy by showing a need for our expertise within the biotechnology industry.``
``We believe that XOMA can move quickly to scale-up production of CI-1042 to increase the supply of CI-1042 for our various clinical trials as well as for commercial launch of the product,`` said Hollings C. Renton, Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer of Onyx, ``XOMA`s manufacturing and development support will enable us to focus our resources on accelerating the clinical development program for this product.``
Onyx Pharmaceuticals is engaged in the discovery and development of novel targeted, highly selective cancer therapies. Based on its proprietary virus technologies, the company is developing CI-1042 as its lead product. CI-1042 is a therapeutic tumor-selective, modified adenovirus (similar to the common cold virus) that has been genetically engineered to replicate in and lyse (burst) cancer cells that have abnormal p53 pathway function while sparing normal cells that have functioning p53. Derangements in the p53 protein pathway are the most common genetic abnormalities in human cancer. CI-1042 is currently in a Phase III clinical trial for head and neck cancer and in Phase I and II clinical trials for a number of additional cancer indications.
XOMA develops and manufactures antibody and other protein biopharmaceuticals for disease targets that include immunological and inflammatory disorders, infectious diseases and cancer. Late-stage programs include a collaboration with Genentech, Inc. to develop the anti-CD11a antibody product for psoriasis (Phase III) and kidney transplant rejection (Phase I/II), and an agreement with the Hyland Immuno Division of Baxter Healthcare Corporation to develop NEUPREX® (a systemic formulation of rBPI-21) for multiple indications. Earlier stage products include: ING-1, a Human Engineered(TM) antibody now in Phase I studies for cancer; Genimune(TM), a Human Engineered(TM) antibody-based immunofusion product in preclinical development for autoimmune diseases and immunological cancers; Mycoprex(TM), a compound in preclinical development for the treatment of fungal infections; and antiangiogenic compounds for retinal disorders. ist ja toll das wir endlich mal wieder etwas von XOMA hören.

Xoma Sees 2000 Loss Slightly Wider Than Analysts` Views
NEW YORK -- Biopharmaceutical company Xoma Ltd. (XOMA) expects its full year 2000 loss to be "slightly" wider than analyst projections, due to higher spending on its anti-CD11a psoriasis program.
A First Call/Thomson financial survey of five analysts produced a consensus estimate of a loss of 43 cents a share for the company`s 2000 fiscal year and a loss of 12 cents a share in the fourth quarter.
For the year ended Dec. 31, 1999, the company lost $47.2 million, or $1.16 a share, including charges, on revenue of $6.3 million. In the fourth quarter, the company lost $9.6 million, or 23 cents a share, including charges, on revenue of $5.5 million.
In a press release Thursday, Xoma said the psoriasis program will not impact its cash position. The company said it has the cash resources to cover operations costs until at least 2002.

XOMA Updates Investors At U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray Conference
NEW YORK--(BW HealthWire)--Feb. 1, 2001--XOMA Ltd. (Nasdaq:XOMA) is presenting an update on its activities today at the U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray Health Care Conference.
The audio and slides from the presentation by Jack Castello, Chairman, President, and CEO of XOMA will be available by live webcast through a link at www.xoma.com at 9:00 AM EST, and will be accessible on an archived basis afterward. Highlights of the presentation include:
-- XOMA is pleased with the continued progress of the two Phase
III trials of the anti-CD11a antibody product in moderate to
severe psoriasis patients. Genentech, XOMA`s collaboration
partner, anticipates a BLA filing in the fourth quarter of
2001. Data from an open-label Phase I/II study in which
patients received 12 weekly subcutaneous doses will be
presented, along with a duration study, at the American
Association of Dermatology meeting in Washington, March 5-7,
2001.
-- The Phase I/II study of anti-CD11a in kidney transplant
patients, which started in the fourth quarter of 2000,
continues on schedule. XOMA investigators will present safety
and pharmacokinetics data from the study at the annual meeting
of the American Society of Transplantation in Chicago, May
11-16, 2001.
-- The ING-1 antibody Phase I study is enrolling advanced
adenocarcinoma patients. The Company expects to complete the
study in 2001 and to present results at a medical meeting
thereafter.
-- The Company is continuing preclinical development of its
Genimune(R) Human Engineered(TM) antibody-gelonin fusion
protein product. Current plans include filing an IND for a
Phase I clinical study in 2001. Genimune targets the CD5
antigen expressed on T and certain B cells and therefore could
be used to treat autoimmune diseases and immunological
malignancies.
-- Baxter and XOMA are preparing to file an IND for the
collaboration`s second NEUPREX(R) indication.
-- XOMA has already begun work to prepare for scale-up and
manufacturing of CI-1042, a therapeutic cancer product, as
part of a strategic process development and manufacturing
relationship with Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced January
29, 2001.
-- The Company is further strengthening its development
capability by consolidating its Santa Monica, California
technical development and pilot plant functions into its
Berkeley, California facility.
-- As a strategic priority in 2001, XOMA is evaluating additional
early and late-stage product development collaborations that
may further leverage its infrastructure and capabilities.
-- Financially, the Company expects its full year 2000 loss per
share to be slightly greater than analyst projections,
primarily due to accelerated spending on the anti-CD11a
psoriasis program. This reflects the rapid progress in the
Phase III psoriasis trials, and will have no impact on XOMA`s
near-term cash position. Taking into account the Onyx
transaction, the Company`s cash resources are estimated to be
sufficient to meet currently anticipated operational needs
until at least the end of 2002.

Statements made in this news release related to the estimated size of the Company`s loss for 2000, the sufficiency of its cash resources, its collaborative agreements and current plans for product development including the progress of clinical trials and timing of trials and regulatory filings, or that otherwise relate to future periods, are forward-looking statements within the meaning of Section 27A of the Securities Act of 1933 and Section 21E of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. These statements are based on assumptions that may not prove accurate. Actual results could differ materially from those anticipated due to certain risks inherent in the biotechnology industry and for companies engaged in the development of new products in a regulated market. until at least the end of 2002.
XOMA develops and manufactures antibody and other protein biopharmaceuticals for disease targets that include immunological and inflammatory disorders, infectious diseases and cancer. Late-stage programs include a collaboration with Genentech, Inc. to develop the anti-CD11a antibody product for psoriasis (Phase III) and kidney transplant rejection (Phase I/II), and an agreement with the Hyland Immuno Division of Baxter Healthcare Corporation to develop NEUPREX(R) (a systemic formulation of rBPI-21) for multiple indications. Earlier stage programs include: ING-1, a Human Engineered(TM) antibody now in Phase I studies in adenocarcinoma patients; Genimune(TM), a Human Engineered(TM) antibody-based immunofusion product in preclinical development for autoimmune diseases and immunological cancers; Mycoprex(TM), a compound in preclinical development for the treatment of fungal infections; and an antiangiogenic compound for retinal disorders. These risks, including those related to size and timing of expenditures, unanticipated expenditures, availability of funds, changes in the status of the Company`s collaborative relationships, the timing and results of pending or future clinical trials, market demand for products, the ability of collaborators and other partners to meet their obligations, actions by the Food and Drug Administration or the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and uncertainties regarding the status of biotechnology patents, are discussed in the Company`s most recent annual report on Form 10-K and in other SEC filings. Consider such risks carefully in evaluating XOMA`s prospects.

Xoma CEO: Co.`s Partnerships Provide Two Years Of Cash
By BETH MANTZ
Dow Jones Newswires
NEW YORK -- Xoma Ltd. (XOMA) has two years` worth of cash going forward thanks to several partnerships, Chairman, Chief Executive and President Jack Castello said here at the U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffrey Healthcare Conference Thursday.
He said the partnerships with Genentech Inc. (DNA) and Baxter Intl. Inc. (BAX) have decreased the amount of money Xoma burns through despite its research and development efforts. Xoma is working on a psoriasis antibody, anti-CD11a, with Genentech and Neuprex, an anti-bacterial protein, with Baxter.
If the anti-CD11a human clinical trials are successful, Xoma could expect an increase in the benefits from its arrangement with Genentech.
Currently, at least 1,000 patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis have enrolled in Genentech-funded late-stage trials. "We will be in close to (the target) of 1,500 patients shortly," said Castello.
Genentech and Xoma are testing to see whether patients experience at least a 75% reduction in psoriasis symptoms, and are also examining the effects of maintaining patients on the drugs after the 12-week study concludes.
If the data demonstrates significant safety and efficacy, Xoma anticipates Genentech would file a marketing application with the Food and Drug Administration in the last half of 2001.
Xoma and Genentech are also testing the drug in patients who have undergone kidney transplants.
Also, Xoma expects to announce a third use for the drug this year, but Castello would not disclose the use.
No matter the approved use, Xoma holds the rights to all indications of anti-CD11a. It is entitled to 25% of the profits in the U.S. and an mid-single digit royalty overseas.

Hi XOMA-Fans,

BERKELEY, Calif., Mar 14, 2001 (XOMA) , a biopharmaceutical company that develops and manufactures antibody and other protein products for cancer, inflammatory and immunological disorders, and infectious diseases, today announced financial results for the year 2000.
For the year ended December 31, 2000, the Company recorded a net loss of $29.4 million, or $0.45 per share, compared with a net loss of $45.8 million, or $0.87 per share, for 1999. Revenues increased to $6.7 million compared with $2.4 million in 1999, primarily due to the Company`s licensing of its NEUPREX(R) product to Baxter Healthcare Corporation in January of 2000. Research and development expenses decreased by 28%, from $41.5 million in 1999 to $30.0 million in 2000. This reflects a significant reduction in spending on NEUPREX(R) following a transfer of development cost responsibilities to Baxter in January of 2000, which more than offset increases in spending on Xanelim(TM) (anti-CD11a), ING-1 and Genimune(TM). General and administrative expenses were essentially unchanged in 2000 compared with 1999.
The Company had $35.2 million in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments as of December 31, 2000, an increase of $16.7 million from December 31, 1999. This increase reflected a $29.0 million private placement of common shares in February of 2000. Net cash used in operations was $22.5 million in 2000, compared with a net cash usage of $43.1 million in 1999. This decrease was the result of a lower operating loss, and $10.0 million in licensing and signing fees received from Baxter as part of the NEUPREX(R) transaction, which is being recognized as revenue over a three-year period.
The present outlook is for somewhat lower losses in 2001 than recorded in 2000; however, the Company`s earnings and cash flow may vary substantially depending upon the pace of product development work and developments in licensing and other collaborative relationships. Based on current spending levels, and taking into account the Onyx transaction, the Company estimates it has sufficient cash resources to meet its currently anticipated operational needs through approximately the end of 2002.
"In the year 2000, we made significant progress broadening our product pipeline as well as improving our financial position," said Jack Castello, XOMA`s chairman, president and CEO. "We are very encouraged by the progress of the Xanelim(TM) program. Enrollment in the two pivotal Phase III studies in psoriasis and the Phase I/II study in kidney transplant was completed well ahead of schedule. We licensed NEUPREX(R) to Baxter in January of 2000, and after an extensive review of options for disease indications, the product should be back in clinical testing shortly. Phase I clinical testing was initiated for ING-1, our Human Engineered(TM) antibody product targeted at cancer indications. In addition, we hope to enter the clinic this year with Genimune(TM), our Human Engineered(TM) gelonin fusion protein that targets autoimmune disorders and cancer."
"Going into 2001," Mr. Castello continued, "we recently announced a strategic process development and manufacturing arrangement with Onyx for their CI-1042 product, which is being developed with Pfizer Inc. Like our Genentech arrangement with Xanelim(TM), we were attractive to Onyx because of our development capabilities. The value of these capabilities is increasingly recognized, and we hope to negotiate additional late and/or early stage collaborations in the future."
Antibody Products
Xanelim(TM) (anti-CD11a): In 2000, Genentech completed patient enrollment in two pivotal Phase III trials in more than 1000 moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis patients. At the recent American Academy of Dermatology meeting held in Washington, DC, encouraging new data were presented. Psoriasis patients treated with subcutaneous doses of Xanelim(TM) for 12 weeks experienced marked improvement in symptoms. Similar results were observed in a separate re-treatment study in which patients received a second course of Xanelim(TM) therapy. We expect Genentech to complete analysis of the Phase III psoriasis data and, if warranted, file for marketing approval late this year. Also in 2000, XOMA completed enrollment in a Phase I/II safety and pharmacokinetics study in kidney transplant patients. Data from this study will be presented at the American Society of Transplantation in May of 2001.
ING-1: XOMA has initiated a Phase I multi-dose, dose-escalation study of its ING-1 monoclonal antibody product in cancer patients. This antibody incorporates XOMA`s patented Human Engineering(TM) technology, designed to reduce immunogenicity. The open-label study will enroll up to 30 patients at two U.S. sites. It will evaluate the safety, tolerability, immunogenicity and pharmacokinetics of ING-1 intravenously administered to patients with advanced adenocarcinomas such as breast, gastrointestinal, lung, ovarian and prostate that are refractory to standard therapies. The study will document any observed anti-tumor activity in these patients.
Genimune(TM): XOMA is conducting preclinical testing of this antibody product, which targets autoimmune diseases and immunological cancers. The product incorporates XOMA`s Human Engineering(TM) technology as well as its patented gelonin fusion technology, which is a way of delivering a proprietary enzyme to kill selected cellular targets. The Company`s objective is to enter clinical testing for this product in 2001.
BPI Protein Products
NEUPREX(R): In January of 2000, XOMA licensed the rights to its NEUPREX(R) product to the Hyland Immuno Division of Baxter Healthcare Corporation. The transaction included $10.0 million in licensing and signing fees, additional payments upon the achievement of certain future clinical and regulatory milestones, 100% funding by Baxter of future development costs and a royalty on future product sales. In a meeting with the FDA in April of 2000, it was determined that data from a Phase III study on pediatric patients suffering from severe meningococcemia were not sufficient to support filing for approval. An article detailing the study results was published in the September 16, 2000 issue of The Lancet. Baxter and XOMA have been studying alternative ways to secure approval for meningococcemia and are also assessing additional indications for clinical testing. No final decision has been made regarding meningococcemia, but a next indication has been selected for clinical testing, and will be announced shortly.
Ophthalmic anti-infectives: In December of 2000, Allergan returned rights to XOMA to utilize BPI as an anti-infective in an ophthalmic setting. XOMA is currently evaluating alternatives for further development of ophthalmic BPI anti-infectives.
Ophthalmic anti-angiogenics: On April 30, 2001, data will be presented by the Boston-based Joslin Diabetes Center at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) meeting, from tests performed on BPI and a BPI-derived peptide in ophthalmic anti-angiogenesis models. The researchers conclude from the results that XOMA`s compounds may have unique therapeutic potential for ocular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy. XOMA is in preliminary discussions with potential development partners.
Development Arrangements
XOMA has the full range of development capabilities needed to take a biologic product from preclinical development through scale-up and manufacturing, clinical testing and regulatory review. This expertise led to the Xanelim(TM) arrangement with Genentech in 1996, and the value of this infrastructure has recently been gaining increasing recognition.
In January of 2001, XOMA signed a strategic process development and manufacturing agreement with Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. for its CI-1042 product. This product has been licensed to Pfizer Inc., and is in Phase III testing for head and neck cancer and in Phase II for liver metastases of colorectal cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. While dependent on the pace and outcome of clinical trials, regulatory approval, sales volume and other factors, the financial scope of this arrangement, which involves upfront fees, milestone payments, performance incentives and fees for services performed and product produced, is projected to be in excess of $35 million over the initial 5-year term. XOMA is in discussions with other companies to leverage its development capabilities to attract additional early and late stage products.
As part of its increased focus on development and manufacturing, XOMA will consolidate its Santa Monica, CA operations into its Berkeley, CA facilities by mid-2001.

Statements made in this news release related to the estimated size of the Company`s loss for 2001, the sufficiency of its cash resources, present or future collaborative arrangements and current plans for product development, including the progress of clinical trials and timing of trials and regulatory filings, or that otherwise relate to future periods, are forward-looking statements within the meaning of Section 27A of the Securities Act of 1933 and Section 21E of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. These statements are based on assumptions that may not prove accurate. Actual results could differ materially from those anticipated due to certain risks inherent in the biotechnology industry and for companies engaged in the development of new products in a regulated market. These risks, including those related to size and timing of expenditures, unanticipated expenditures, availability of funds, changes in the status of existing collaborative relationships, availability of additional collaboration opportunities, the timing and results of pending or future clinical trials, market demand for products, the ability of collaborators and other partners to meet their obligations, actions by the Food and Drug Administration or the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and uncertainties regarding the status of biotechnology patents, are discussed in the Company`s most recent annual report on Form 10-K and in other SEC filings. Consider such risks carefully in evaluating XOMA`s prospects.

XOMA Reports Year 2000 Financial Results; Update on Recent Developments
3/14/2001 8:02:00 AM

XOMA is in discussions with other companies to leverage its development capabilities to attract additional early and late stage products.
As part of its increased focus on development and manufacturing, XOMA will consolidate its Santa Monica, CA operations into its Berkeley, CA facilities by mid-2001.

"Fidelity just bought 2.8 million shares will their target to be in high twenties to low thirties. Reasearch is on multex investors and market guide and institutional ownership etc. see nasd filings and also hey skb smithkline also has large interest here. THEY ARE GETTING FDA approvals this year and lots of it."

Hi XOMA-Fans,
Psoriasis Drugs Prepare to Go Head-to-Head
By Adam Feuerstein
Staff Reporter
6/15/01 9:29 AM ET
SAN FRANCISCO -- Investors interested in eavesdropping on some biotech trash-talking might want to tune in to an important psoriasis medical meeting being held here next week.
Xoma`s Potential Heartbreak of a Psoriasis Drug Delay
Now we admit, a bunch of dermatologists chattering in the halls of a San Francisco hotel might not titillate the eardrums a la the Allen Iverson-Kobe Bryant feud, but for biotech observers, some juicy stuff will be thrown around the International Psoriasis Symposium, which runs June 19-24.
The best showdown will come between Biogen (BGEN:Nasdaq - news - commentary) and a tag team comprising Genentech (DNA:NYSE - news - commentary) and Xoma (XOMA:Nasdaq - news - commentary). Both sides have a lot riding on the meeting because testing on their respective psoriasis drugs is largely completed and the drugs are about to be submitted to U.S. drug regulators. And while the companies won`t admit it publicly, they have already been slinging mud at each other. The stakes are high: The 5 million American psoriasis sufferers could spend as much as $2 billion on new drugs annually by 2005.
Case in point: Xoma CEO Jack Castello, at his recent shareholder meeting, seemed to imply that rival Biogen`s drug, Amevive, could cause patients to fall victim to all sorts of bad things, namely infections, cancers, even AIDS. Now, Castello did not specifically link Amevive with these nasty diseases. But he did talk at length about possible problems that occur when a patient`s T-cells, or immune cells, are depleted. And guess what? Amevive works by suppressing, or eliminating, certain types of T-cells. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
Not that Biogen is above the fray. The company, angered by Xoma`s put-downs, reportedly sent out a little Care package to institutional investors (the company won`t own up to it). Inside the package, a copy of which was obtained by TheStreet.com, was a March 2000 research study that raised potentially serious safety questions about the Xoma/Genentech drug, dubbed Xanelim. And while not necessarily the source, Biogen is also benefiting from speculation that Xanelim patients are suffering from severe relapses of their psoriasis symptoms, bad enough that the drug`s Food and Drug Administration submission might be delayed. TheStreet.com has examined this issue.
Investors should look for potentially market-moving conference news starting on Thursday and continuing through Saturday, as each company makes multiple presentations about its latest research results. Biogen needs Amevive because sales of its biggest money-maker, the multiple sclerosis drug Avonex, are showing signs of weakness. Xoma is just plain desperate to push any drug to market. In 20 years, the company is still shooting blanks. Genentech, with its existing stable of profitable drugs, has less riding on Xanelim.
With stakes as high as this, and both camps facing off in dueling presentations, conference attendees and investors will get a very clear view of how the drugs stack up against each other and their odds for success.

Biotech stocks mixed; XOMA gains
By Ted Griffith, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 5:29 PM ET June 26, 2001
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Biotechnology stocks closed mixed on Tuesday, as shares of Xoma gained more ground while Inhale Therapeutics` stock was gasping for air.
The Amex Biotechnology Index (BTK: news, msgs, alerts) edged down 0.3 percent while the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index (NBI: news, msgs, alerts) inched up 0.2 percent.
Shares of Xoma, which at one point touched a 52-week high of $16.87, closed up $1.76, or 12 percent, at $16.80.
Xoma`s stock has been on the rise since Thursday, when the company and its partner Genentech said their experimental treatment for the psoriasis produced encouraging results in late-stage patient testing.
Shares of biotech giant Genentech dropped 99 cents to $53.40.
Xoma`s stock is also benefiting from the perceived problems of rival Biogen. Some analysts have said test results on Biogen`s competing psoriasis treatment were lackluster.
Analyst Mark Augustine at US Bancorp Piper Jaffray said the "disappointing" performance of Biogen`s drug reduces potential competitive risks to the Xoma-Genentech drug, called Xanelim. Augustine also said Xanelim might eventually be used to treat other diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis.
"In the wake of this data, we expect Genentech and Xoma to move forward aggressively with their psoriasis and other planned Xanelim programs," Augustine wrote in a note to clients. Shares of Biogen, which plunged in the previous session, slipped further, closing down 15 cents to $54.26.
