Welcome to our party!
From the June 2000 Issue
In 1997 when we first published the Red Herring 100 -- then called the Digital Universe issue -- it was unique. Fortune and Forbes had their lists, compiled according to metrical data, but only Red Herring published a list of companies based on qualitative insights. For four years, using criteria borrowed from venture capitalists and investment bankers, we have asked which companies are changing the world (to understand our methodology, see criteria). In 1996 there were no "new economy" magazines except for ourselves, Upside, and -- if you stretch the category to include career advice for new-economy managers -- Fast Company. None published a list of companies. Today, we have more competitors. And they have all copied us. There is an Industry Standard 100 and a Business 2.0 Top 50; and Fortune and Forbes now have their own top e-companies, too.
As an editor, I imagined our readers groaning as they receive yet another bloated magazine claiming that its list of companies was conclusive. No matter how good our choices, I fretted that no one could love it except for the marketing and public relations officers whose companies had been chosen.
Nevertheless, readers once liked such lists for a reason. There is a summary, definitive quality to the exercise: it neatly says who and what a business magazine thinks is important, and why. On Redherring.com you can read exclusive information about each of the top 100 companies, and tell us what you think about our picks in our discussion forums. Through the right-hand navigation, you can access the complete list of 100 companies, or take a look at the 50 private and 50 public winners separately.
Click on a company name and you will be taken to a company overview page containing information about that company`s market, strategy, management, branding, and financials. Further information is available in our database of 1,200 companies; a click on the company profile link will take you there.
In addition, our editors have selected relevant stories about each company, or you can easily search for all the related stories on Redherring.com for further reading. For each public company, a chart lets you view the progress of stock pricings.
To learn more about the companies that we think will be hot in the future, check out our special feature called 10 to Watch on the early-stage private companies we think are most exciting. And, as always, be sure to stop in at the discussion forums to let us know what you think.

Hi Endless,
