      Interaktiver Fernsehkanal eTV geplant

      Canal Digital AS

Canal Digital is the leading distributor of pay-TV to the Nordic market, and has a unique position being a sole provider of digital satellite television in the Nordic region.

Canal Digital was founded in March 1997 as a joint venture between French pay-TV company Canal+ and the Norwegian holding company Telenor Plus. Within its first year of operation, Canal Digital had signed deals with 20 top international channel providers such as National Geographic, Discovery, Fox Kids and Eurosport. October 1997, Canal Digital started testing its Pay Per View service, KIOSK, and October the next year, Canal Digital launched its digital serviced, including 12 Pay-Per-View services and an electronic Programme Guide.

eTV and Canal Digital initiate co-operation in interactive television channel

      Sep 8 2000

The interactive digital television channel eTV will be available to households in the Nordic region via Canal Digital’s satellite platform starting next year. The channel will offer the subscribers shopping opportunities and interactive services via their television sets using the remote control. The interactive services on the channel are combined with music, movie trailers and reports from the world of entertainment, 24 hours a day. Both the services and the programming will be adapted and subtitled in the Nordic languages.

eTV Broadcasting AB and Canal Digital have signed a three-year contract for exclusive satellite distribution of the interactive television channel eTV. eTV will be part of the Canal Digital’s Family-package, i.e. the basic package, as of early 2001. “eTV will give Canal Digital subscribers completely new opportunities for interactivity with their remote control, including information and the possibility to buy goods and services directly via their television sets. Canal Digital’s extensive range of channels and services will be further strengthened by working together with the interactive channel eTV,” says Per Tengblad, CEO, Canal Digital.

“We will be able to reach almost a million viewers and potential customers with our interactive television marketplace in 2001,” says Bo Blåeldh, CEO, eTV Broadcasting. “When we begin transmitting via Canal Digital in the second quarter of 2001, we will already have a year’s experience of interactive e-shopping via television in Swedish households. This makes us by far the strongest player in interactive television in the Nordic region. It is also a great challenge for us to adapt both the television channel and customer service to the various Nordic territories.”

eTV is one of the first interactive television channels in the Nordic region. Households connected to the Swedish terrestrial digital network have been able to access the channel to order music and movies or book trips directly on their televisions since February 2000. The interactivity previously reserved for Internet users is now readily available via a normal TV set.

As the channel will now be reaching the whole of the Nordic region, both the services and the programming on the channel will be expanded and adapted. As early as this autumn the channel will begin selling games and event tickets, and other changes will also be noticeable in the autumn. The agreement with Canal Digital is a very important interim goal in eTV’s overall endeavour to be present on all distribution platforms and reach every household.

eTV Broadcasting AB offers interactive transaction services via its own television channel and other platforms to television households in the Nordic region. eTV is part of the NewMedia Spark Group (formerly Cell Ventures).
