Feedback
Wie Ihr bereits gemerkt habt, legt der Megatrend Biotech zur Zeit eine kleine Verschnaufspause ein. Obwohl ich den Begriff Megatrend eigentlich nicht mag, greife ich ihn trotzdem auf, um von kurzfristigen Umschichtungen abzugrenzen.
Ist die Verschnaufspause bei den Biotechs nur vorrübergehend, und geht es in einigen Wochen mit Werten aus der zweiten Reihe weiter ? Können sich die Perlen von der Spreu trennen, und nochmal performen ? Oder wird alles nach unten geprügelt, wie wir es bei den TMT Werten gesehen haben ?
Bekommen wir einen neuen Megatrend ? Wo könnte das Geld hinfließen ? M-Commerce, Breitbandinternet, Internetsecurity, Halbleiter oder Renaissance der Blue Chips/Old Economy ? Finance wg. Zinssenkeungen oder ist das schon antizipiert ? Direktbroker noch Potenzial ? Oder was ganz anderes ?

S.: Bei Halbleiter und IT Hardware bin ich mich ziemlich sicher, daß es nicht der neue Megatrend wird, weil die Hardware Preise gegenüber den Software Preisen immer weiter abfallen (siehe PC Preise) und der Margendruck in diesem Geschäft immer größer wird ! Bei Halbleiter werden meiner Meinung die Firmen profitieren, die neue Segmente erschließen, wie es zum Beispiel beim Handy Markt der Fall war (was allerdings schon gelaufen ist !).

Medizintechnik könnte ein neuer Megatrend werden, da in 2000 schlecht gelaufen. Eine 100%-Chance sehe ich bei KRETZTECHNIK.

Anfang der 90er Jahre gab es bereits einen ersten Biotech Boom. Diese Boom Phase endete mit einer Korrektur. Die Börse war damals also insgesamt der Meinung, daß sie die Zukunftsaussichten diese Branche zu diesem Zeitpunkt genügend gewürdigt hatte.
Jetzt haben wir einen neuen Biotech Boom. Zwischen diesen beiden Boomphasen haben die Forscher aber nicht nur Urlaub gemacht, sondern größtenteils weiter geforscht. Die Forschung und damit auch die monetären Aussichten haben sich also relativ kontinuierlich weiterentwickelt.
Diese Verbesserung der Gewinnerwartung wurde durch die Börse aber schubweise antizipert, also viel volatiler als es von der fundamentalen Entwicklung angemessen gewesen wäre.

wühlt euch durch die nanotechthreads durch mit sämtlichen weiterführenden Links und ihr werdet erfahren, dass die VC´s jetzt Geld in nanos pumpen und ausgesuchte Bios, die damit zusammenhängen (Bsp. drug delivery systems oder Wie bekomme ich Riesenmoleküle durch winzige "Löcher" am und im Körper?) Die meisten großen Konzerne haben schon eigene nanoabteilungen, in der Mehrzahl die Pharmakonzerne wie ELAN Corp. aus Irland.
Die nanos stehen in der Entwicklung jetzt dort, wo bios 1990 standen. In 2001/2002 wird es einige Neuemmissionen in USA dazu geben. Vielleicht auch 2 in Dtl. Aktuell gibt es nur eine Hand voll reine nanos am markt, die bald platzen werden. Reale Anwendungen, wenn auch in abgespeckter Form sind schon auf dem Markt. Und noch eins: nicht alles, wo nano drauf steht, ist auch nano!
Die nanos stehen in der Entwicklung jetzt dort, wo bios 1990 standen. In 2001/2002 wird es einige Neuemmissionen in USA dazu geben. Vielleicht auch 2 in Dtl. Aktuell gibt es nur eine Hand voll reine nanos am markt, die bald platzen werden. Reale Anwendungen, wenn auch in abgespeckter Form sind schon auf dem Markt. Und noch eins: nicht alles, wo nano drauf steht, ist auch nano!

So, wie fast alle hier bin ich auch davon ueberzeugt dass Biotech der grosse Trend der naechsten Jahre wird. Bloss sind mir manche Werte, die nur von der Entwicklung einer oder zweier Substanzen abhaengen (um bei drug delivery zu bleiben z.B. VION) einfach zu riskant.
Sicher ist allerdings, dass alle diese Unternehmen Laborgeraete brauchen. Agilent finde da schon ganz gut, aber die groesseren Gewinne werden wohl eher bei den Unternehmen anfallen, die weiter unten in der value chain stehen. Z.B. Caliper Technologies (Thread: Caliper Technologies (NASDAQ NM:CALP))

Analyst View: Bonds bode well for broadband

I have a confession to make. I believe next-generation data service providers will be the most important group of companies to the general economy over the next decade or so, as they wire and provide services to support the digital economy.
This is a belief I have held since 1996, when I left the telecommunications industry and joined the ranks of equity analysts. However, the equity markets have not agreed with me much lately. The performance of the companies that make up my universe has been dismal since about April 2000. The Epoch Broadband and IP data services index was down 74 percent from April 1, 2000, to December 31, 2000. Investors lost billions betting on next-generation service providers.
What went wrong? Well, the list of excuses is a long one. Everything from concerns over access to capital, quality of customer bases (dot-coms buy lots of data services), and bandwidth glut (see our report here) to more fundamental issues such as valuation combined to take the collective wind out of this group`s sails -- encouraging selling of their stocks. Sounds like a pretty grim time to be a company in this sector -- doesn`t it?
THE BONDS ARE BACK
So, why am I happy as I write this column? It could be that this sector has been up for four days in a row (from Tuesday, January 9, through Friday, January 12) for the first time since October. But that`s not really it. What has really gotten me more excited than I have been since early last summer is that bond holders are back in my stocks.
In the communications services group, equity flows tend to "follow the bonds." Bond investors were the first to abandon the group as the high-yield market shut down to first-time debt issuers in late spring and to almost all issuers during the summer. The equity markets followed suit a couple of months later, with a severe drop-off in activity toward the end of the third quarter and throughout the fourth quarter of the year.
Certain recent offerings provide some evidence that money is finding its way back into the badly punished broadband services industry by way of the bond market. This is consistent with information that our institutional sales force has heard from accounts over the past few weeks. We are now beginning to see evidence that this trend is playing out in the market.
Three large players in the broadband and telecom infrastructure space -- Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR), McLeodUSA (Nasdaq: MCLD), and XO Communications (Nasdaq: XOXO) -- each closed large, oversubscribed public high-yield bond offerings. These offerings represent some of the first public financing efforts from this sector in more than six months.
SELECTIVITY IS THE KEY
Why might money be coming back into this sector? The Street currently believes that the Fed is not yet done cutting interest rates. Therefore, bond traders believe they can lock in strong yields in high-yield paper before the yields on risk-free bonds come in substantially with further rate cuts.
This is the exact opposite of what happened in the spring of 2000, when low interest rates compressed yields on high-yield bonds. At that time, the risk of the investment outstripped the return, given the Fed`s bias toward rate tightening. Now, with the cost of capital likely to decrease in the future with further rate cuts, investors are looking to lock in rates that overly emphasize the risks associated with making the investment.
What does this mean for equity holders of broadband services companies? First, you should not go out and indiscriminately buy the equity of all of the publicly traded providers of broadband services companies. There will be more public market causalities over the near to mid-term. The effects of these pending rate cuts on corporate spending and investments in private companies will lag the market substantially. Equity instruments are more short term when compared to bonds in this respect.
Therefore, investors would be best suited to look for well-capitalized businesses that can weather any near-term shortfalls and do not have near-term fund-raising requirements. Companies with strong long-term fundamentals that possess these attributes include Akamai Technologies (Nasdaq: AKAM), Level 3 Communications (Nasdaq: LVLT), and Exodus Communications (Nasdaq: EXDS) (Note: Epoch Partners has these companies under research coverage).
And, in fact, since we initially told investors about bond money coming back into the market on our Web site (see our January 5 report), these stocks have performed quite nicely, with Akamai up 41 percent, Level 3 up 33 percent, and Exodus up 25 percent.
This is one small positive sign in a current sea of negativity. We believe investors tend to make the most money by seeking out signs of such turns when most of the market is heading the other direction.
