      E-Business Spending Gets a Boost
      By Mark Roberti

As the economy slows, most companies are investing less in technology - with one notable exception. A report due out the week of Jan. 29 suggests that IT departments will increase spending on key e-business initiatives.

AMR Research, an IT research and consulting firm in Boston, surveyed 100 companies with more than $500 million in revenue. Among the key findings:

      - Eighty-seven percent of respondents plan to sustain or increase investment in software that helps boost sales and improve customer satisfaction.

      - Eighty-four percent say they will sustain or increase spending on software for collaborating with suppliers.

      - Ninety-four percent will sustain or increase their budgets for technology used to build trading exchanges or business-to-business marketplaces.

Almost a quarter of the 100 companies surveyed said they plan to increase their spending on e-commerce technology even if the economy turns down this year.

About 65 percent said they won`t change their spending plans, and only 14 percent said they would decrease spending in a downturn. Companies also said they would spend less on upgrading their hardware and software, and less on automating internal processes.

In 1999 and 2000, companies had been boosting their IT budgets by 15 percent a year. In October, AMR found that companies plan to increase their budgets by just 5 percent in 2001. But the new study makes it clear that the tighter purse strings won`t slow the rush into e-business, which represents about 10 percent of the $1 trillion spent on IT annually, according to AMR.

"The b-to-b sector is going to be the silver lining in the IT spending cloud this year," says AMR President and CEO Tony Friscia. "CIOs are telling us that it`s easy to get funding when they can show direct savings related to purchasing or their supply chain, or when they can increase top-line growth through customer management applications."

AMR forecasts that companies will spend $7.8 billion on software that helps them communicate more effectively with suppliers this year, up from $5.4 billion last year. They`ll also spend an additional $9.8 billion on software that helps them track purchases and inquiries by customers in 2001, up from $6.8 billion in 2000.

"Even in industries where the slump is hitting hardest, companies are still investing in these areas," Friscia says. "Auto sales were down in December, and they are looking in the eyes of a recession. But in IT, they aren`t cutting back in these key areas."

Despite the demise of many public b-to-b marketplaces, AMR says online marketplaces will handle e-commerce transactions worth $2.3 trillion, or about 40 percent of all e-commerce transactions, by 2004. That`s because many companies are setting up private marketplaces to deal with their suppliers.

"A lot of people are saying the death of the dot-coms will take pressure off brick-and-mortar companies," Friscia says. "Personally, I think the death of dot-coms is irrelevant. Companies have seen the benefits of exchange technology, and they are only going to increase spending to take advantage of it."

      @Threadneedle

      schrittweise investieren (cost average).

Auf dem Niveau ist Vignette für mich ein klarer Kauf.
Bin seit 8,95 Euro drin und habe vorher einige gute
      Daytrades mit Vignette gehabt.

      Bin jetzt langfristig orientiert.

      Greetings Threadneedle

      Eine Meldung von gestern 06.03.2001:

      Vignette Names Siebel`s Hogan
      As President, Operating Chief
      A WSJ.com News Roundup
AUSTIN, Texas -- Vignette Corp. named Siebel Systems Inc.`s sales chief as its new president and chief operating officer.

Thomas E. Hogan previously was senior vice president of world-wide sales and operations. Prior to Siebel, Mr. Hogan held several executive posts at International Business Machines Corp.

A Vignette spokesman said the post of chief operating officer is newly created. Mr. Hogan will be responsible for world-wide operations, including sales, marketing, support, services and product development.

In January, Vignette said it planned to dismiss 15%, or 345, of its 2,300 employees, and consolidate facilities to reduce costs. The company, which develops software for building Web sites, said its restructuring came in the face of slowing sales gains.

Shares of Siebel dropped on the news, falling $3.12 to $30.50 in morning trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Shares of Vignette rose 81 cents to $5.97, also on Nasdaq.

Siebel sells software that allows companies to keep tabs on their sales forces and customer-support operations, among other functions.

      So long King Kong
