Oct. 11 — With oil prices slumping as the world
economy slows, traders and consumers are
looking to the Organization of Petroleum
Exporting Countries for clues about where prices
are headed. But despite its pledge to stick to its $25
a barrel target, OPEC faces a number of new
obstacles that are making it much harder to
stabilize oil prices.
OIL PRICES fell sharply following the Sept. 11 attacks
on the widespread belief that a global war on terrorism would
further slow an already weak global economy. A plunge in
airline traffic has left the world awash in jet fuel, for example.
The end of the summer driving season has cut consumption
for gasoline. Traders have been betting that demand for oil
will continue to fall, according to Michael Rothman, an oil
analyst at Merrill Lynch.
“The price of oil has been falling because of a fear that
there’s going to be a glut and OPEC won’t be able to deal
with the oversupply,” he said.
A sharp drop in prices usually brings a cut in production
from OPEC. Despite the oversupply, the cartel’s ministers, at
a meeting in Vienna earlier this month, agreed to keep the
flow of oil steady. Many speculated that the move was a
show of support for the U.S. and other oil consuming nations
in the war against terrorism.
But OPEC also faces a thornier problem: how to
maintain their market share at a time of increasing output
from Russia, a non-OPEC producer. In the past, non-OPEC
producers like Norway and Mexico have gone along with
production cutbacks to help keep prices stable.
“Russia, at least so far, has been fairly unwilling to do
that,” said Jim Rollyson, an energy analyst at Raymond
James & Assoc. “But OPEC producers don’t want to give
market share to the non-OPEC guys. They’re stuck between
market share and prices.”
Either way, lower prices or lower production means less
cash for OPEC producers at a time of potential domestic
political turmoil. Analysts estimate that Saudi Arabia, for
example, faces budget shortfalls when oil prices fall below
$25 a barrel. But the ruling regime at the center of the
Muslim world can ill-afford to make budget cuts as it tries to
calm unrest fostered by the war on terrorist extremists.
“The budgetary
requirement of OPEC
countries haven’t gone
away,” said UBS Warburg
oil analyst Matthew
Warburton.
OPEC may yet trim
output before yearend.
The cartel has already
scheduled a special meeting for November 14. And the
standing agreement to keep prices in a $22-$28 per barrel
target range has brought adjustments in production between
meetings in the past. OPEC’s export price stood at $19.86
per barrel on Wednesday.
But in deciding when to make cuts, OPEC faces a tough
task gauging supply and demand. Even in times of relative
calm, forecasting world oil demand and tracking supplies is at
best a collection of guesses. Following a sudden economic
shock like last month’s attacks, it may be weeks or months
before the full impact on consumption is known.
It’s also unclear just how much oil is out there — now
stockpiled waiting for refining or on tankers in the distribution
pipeline. On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Energy said
crude oil stocks were unchanged last week at 307 million
barrels. But earlier in the week week, oil prices had slid on a
report by the American Petroleum Institute which showed a
1.1 percent drop in inventories.
All of this comes at a time when the heating season is
approaching much of the oil consuming world — another
variable over which OPEC has no control. A mild winter
could further cut consumption and add to inventories.
But there are forces
pushing oil prices higher —
even without a coordinated
effort by OPEC. For one
thing, the cost of shipping
oil has gone up, as the
increased risk has brought
higher insurance premiums
— a cost that’s typically
passed along to oil buyers.
Higher premiums are also
likely to remain for some time as insurers recoup losses from
other attack-related claims.
Fears of a widening war are also expected to push
prices higher. At the moment, analysts say the price of oil
includes little in the way of a “risk premium” for the
possibility of a war-related cut-off of supplies. But as the
fight against terrorism shifts to other countries in the region,
the fear is that oil production could be slowed or interrupted
— especially from Iraq.
While Iraqi officials have denied any involvement in
September 11 attacks, the U.S. has warned Iraq not to
conduct military campaigns while air strikes against
Afghanistan were under way. Any widening of U.S. military
action to include to Iraq could force oil prices above $30 a
barrel, former Saudi Arabian oil minister Sheik Yamani said
on Wednesday.
“If that were to happen, Iraqi oil would disappear from
the world market, 2.2 million barrels a day,” Yamani said.
Supplies could also tighten if Congress passes a measure
currently being considered to increase the size of the U.S.
Strategic Petroleum Reserve by as much as half a billion
barrels. While the increased stockpile could help blunt future
prices spikes, the move would tighten supplies in the
short-term, says Rollyson.
“If you to suck 500 million barrels off the market, that’s
pretty significant amount,” he said.

Ach ja, so um den 20.09 herum habe ich mal wegen Lufthansa OS hier im Board nachgefragt - Deine damalige Antwort, es gaebe nix gescheites, hat sich Gott sei Dank (ausnahmsweise) nicht bewahrheitet. Den 537572 konnte ich gestern mit knapp 100% Aufschlag verkaufen

calls auf sow4 konnte man in den vergangenen 10-12 monaten hervorragend traden, wie der verlauf zu erkennen gibt.
vielleicht wieder interessant??

Zu allem übel hat die pitterpöse CIT mein Dachs-Put Scheinchen ganz übel gepreist. Daraufhin hab ich mich noch mal rumgedreht!! Und das war gut so. Vorhin konnte ich sie im Plus raushauen!
Für neue Positionierung warte ich erst mal die Wirtschaftsdaten und Verbrauchervertrauen ab.

danke fuxx, für deine neusesten öl-news. nun stehe ich vor der frage, ob ich im 711387 meine täglichen 10c mitnehme oder noch auf volaänderungen warten soll. im b steht er immo bei 1,55, sollte aber bei ca 1,70 stehen (im vgl stand letzter woche inkl änderungen der basis, des wochenthetas und der vola).
meine alv calls habe ich abgestosssen und tendier jetzt zum dax call 713008 für ca. 1,35 falls die kennzahlen stimmen und dax stand 4670.

da hab ich mir einmal für den freitag vorgenommen, mit einer kleinen position den dax zu traden, und jedesmal, wenn ich mich zu einem kauf entschlossen habe, da dreht das ding gerade wieder...
aber auch die nachbars scheinen immo nicht so ganz schlüssig..

LONDON (Reuters) - The International Energy Agency said on Friday
quota compliance in the OPEC cartel crumbled in September, when
the 10 countries with oil supply restrictions cut less than half the amount promised.
The 10 nations, excluding Iraq which is subject to United Nations sanctions, cut output by 450,000
barrels per day (bpd) in September, versus a one million bpd reduction in their official quotas, the IEA
said in its monthly oil market report.
OPEC 10 output totaled 24.47 million bpd in September, 1.26 million bpd above their self-assigned 23.2
million bpd ceiling, the Paris-based watchdog said.
Including Iraq, the 11-member group supplied 27.23 million bpd to world markets in September,
470,000 bpd below August.
The IEA, which aims to protect oil consuming nations from OPEC`s cartel power, said the world would
need much less oil from the cartel in the fourth quarter because demand would be lower than
expected before the September 11 attacks on the United States, and because non-OPEC supply is
rising more than previously thought.
The IEA revised downwards its estimate of demand for OPEC oil by 1.4 million bpd in the fourth quarter
to 25.8 million bpd -- 1.43 million bpd below September`s estimated output level.
And for the first quarter next year, the IEA said the world required just 25.7 million bpd from the
group, 1.2 million bpd below its previous estimate.
The drastically lower estimates for OPEC oil demand were mainly due to a demand shock caused by
the after-effects of the September 11 attacks, but it was exacerbated by an upwards revision in
forecast non-OPEC supply.
The IEA revised non-OPEC supply in the fourth quarter upwards by 300,000 bpd to 47.3 million bpd,
while for 2002 as a whole, the IEA said it revised non-OPEC supply up 200,000 bpd to 47.5 million bpd.

LONDON (Reuters) - The International Energy Agency said on Friday
quota compliance in the OPEC cartel crumbled in September, when
the 10 countries with oil supply restrictions cut less than half the amount promised.
The 10 nations, excluding Iraq which is subject to United Nations sanctions, cut output by 450,000
barrels per day (bpd) in September, versus a one million bpd reduction in their official quotas, the IEA
said in its monthly oil market report.
OPEC 10 output totaled 24.47 million bpd in September, 1.26 million bpd above their self-assigned 23.2
million bpd ceiling, the Paris-based watchdog said.
Including Iraq, the 11-member group supplied 27.23 million bpd to world markets in September,
470,000 bpd below August.
The IEA, which aims to protect oil consuming nations from OPEC`s cartel power, said the world would
need much less oil from the cartel in the fourth quarter because demand would be lower than
expected before the September 11 attacks on the United States, and because non-OPEC supply is
rising more than previously thought.
The IEA revised downwards its estimate of demand for OPEC oil by 1.4 million bpd in the fourth quarter
to 25.8 million bpd -- 1.43 million bpd below September`s estimated output level.
And for the first quarter next year, the IEA said the world required just 25.7 million bpd from the
group, 1.2 million bpd below its previous estimate.
The drastically lower estimates for OPEC oil demand were mainly due to a demand shock caused by
the after-effects of the September 11 attacks, but it was exacerbated by an upwards revision in
forecast non-OPEC supply.
The IEA revised non-OPEC supply in the fourth quarter upwards by 300,000 bpd to 47.3 million bpd,
while for 2002 as a whole, the IEA said it revised non-OPEC supply up 200,000 bpd to 47.5 million bpd.

Im Verlauf des US Handelstages werden wir m.E. wieder tiefere Kurse sehen. Die amerikanischen Investoren werden zu WE wahrscheinlich abverkaufen. Vielleicht kannst Du, wenn Du mutig bist wieder im Verlauf des Abends Puts billiger zurückkaufen und über´s WE halten.

Tja, der Milzbrandcrash hat dem Euro wieder Flügel verliehen. Put wieder 40% im minus :cry
Werde aber verkaufen, da am WE wohl alles passieren kann, wenn da z.B. 100 neue Fälle von Milzbrand gemeldet werden, würde das den Dollar heftigst belasten.

Euro-Put verkauft. Bis zu den Zahlen um 14:30 gab es nur ganz logische Gewinnmitnahmen aufgrund des 2 cent Verlustes innerhalb von 2 Tagen, durch die Zahlen dann auf 9050 wirklich sehr moderat, dann wieder Dollarstärke durch relativ gutes Verbrauchervertrauen, dann der Milzbrandhammer! Die Trader bleiben übers WE draußen. Am Montag neue Chance, Euro noch im Abwärtstrend, die Milzbrandlage sollte sich am WE klären, hoffe nicht, daß es allzu schlimm wird, aber auf eine natürliche Ansteckung scheinen die Fälle nicht zurückzuführen sein. Milzbrand kommte irgendwie alle Schaltjahre mal vor, jetzt 4 Fälle innerhalb von 1 Woche...

guten abend ihr lieben,
da ich eure trades nicht irgendwie beeinflussen wollte, hab ich mich heut nach meiner heimkehr,mit meinem "bullengeschrei" schwer zurückgehalten,
wollte nur kurz vermelden,
das mir der kursrückgang,
die EMC scheinchenWKN 535103,zu 0.06 wieder ins depot geweht hat
haben gestern 9 cent gekostet,
außerdem hab ich meine ciscos,die ich heut morgen zu 20 cent verscherbelt hab zu 18 cent um 18.30 wieder geholt,
weil ich durchaus der meinung war,die bullen in amerika schmeißen nicht gerne ihr geld zwei wochen lang zum fenster raus,
um sich dann am freitag von den bären,oder einem neuen milzbrandfall um den erfolg der endlich wieder "erkämpften "chartmarken bringen zu lassen(so grausam das weiterdenken solcher vorkommnisse auch ist,...wir werden damit leben müssen,da es gegen solche dinge definitiv keinen schutz gibt.
bin auch der meinung,dass es wieder und wieder korrekturen gibt...
und falls kriegs- oder anschlagsszenarien die welt wieder verstärkt in panik versetzen,sogar massiv,
aber dem allgemeinen gebabbel..von rezession und weltuntergang, von finanz- und wirtschaftspolitischer seite,schenke ich schon seit vor dem 11 sept. keinen glauben mehr,
da war schon deutlich ein aufwärtsdrang des marktes spürbar...
aber natürlich rein subjektiv,die meinung eines blauvogels,
der den markt heut definitiv nach oben "gestarrt" hat
naja..mit soviel calls in der dasch..und einem gläserl rotwein in der hand...kein "starren "ohne sinn und zweck

Handheld device maker Handspring [US:HAND] might unveil new wireless products on Monday according to Marc Cabi, an analyst at CS First Boston. Cabi said Handspring is "pushing to a commercial launch at carriers early next year" The devices are set to be much smaller than early Palm OS smart phones and could set off a wave of catalysts for recovery over a 12- to 18-month period, Cabi said. Shares closed up 31 percent to $2.19.
Quintiles Transnational [US:QTRN] and WebMD [US:HLTH] settled litigation that will end business dealings between the two firms. WebMD will buy back its 35 million shares of stock that Quintiles owns for $185 million in cash. WebMD will continue to provide data to Quintiles until Feb. 28, and Quintiles has no obligation to share operating income with WebMD or to fund product development. Also, if WebMD is purchased before June 30, 2004, at a price greater than $4 a share or a total of $500 million, Quintiles will receive a contingent payment. Shares of Quintiles closed down 60 cents, or 4 percent, at $14.91. WebMD shares were down 23 cents, or 6 percent, at $3.52.
Verticalnet [US:VERT] said its chief financial officer, Gene Godick, resigned to "pursue entrepreneurial interests." He will stay at the company until the end of the month. Verticalnet appointed its chief operating officer, David Kostman, as interim CFO. Shares of the business-to-business software maker closed down 2.9 percent at $1.32 ahead of the report.

Amylin Pharmaceuticals [US:AMLN] jumped more than 17 percent after the company said that it will need to do additional work before it can begin selling its drug to treat diabetes. The biotech firm said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had deemed the drug "approvable" for treatment of diabetes. But Amylin also said, "approval will require additional clinical work, the specific requirements of which will be determined following further discussions with the FDA."
Cepheid [US:CPHD] zoomed more than 42 percent higher. The company, which makes a pathogen-detection device, received a boost from news that a New York employee at NBC had contracted a form of Anthrax (see 11:57 item). Prior to the news, the stock was trading around $5.50. Among other companies involved in making products for biological warfare protection and prevention, Aclara BioSciences [US:ACLA] and Strategic Diagnostics [US:SDIX] both rallied.
DoubleClick [USCLK] added almost 9 percent after the company announced a third-quarter net loss of $12.6 million, or 9 cents per share, on a 31 percent revenue decline to $92.7 million. At the end of September, the online advertising firm warned that it would report a third-quarter loss of 9 to 11 cents a share, wider than its previous outlook for a loss of 5 to 7 cents a share. EarthShell [US:ERTH] advanced more than 11 percent after the company disclosed that its environmentally friendly bowls and plates will be introduced at select Wal-Mart [US:WMT] stores in Portland, Ore., and Baltimore, Md., next month. "This is the first time ever that our products have been made available for retail sale, and we believe that this project will confirm strong consumer interest in EarthShell Packaging," said Vincent Truant, the company`s chief marketing officer, in a press release
Echelon [US:ELON] gained more than 8 percent after the Sunnyvale, Calif., software firm reported third-quarter earnings of $757,000, or 2 cents a share, up from a year-ago profit of $128,000, or breaking even on a per-share basis, and in line with Wall Street`s consensus estimate. Revenue jumped 47 percent in the latest three months to $18 million from $12.2 million in the same period a year earlier.
Electronics For Imaging [US:EFII] rose more than 5 percent after the company reported third-quarter net income of $11 million, or 20 cents a share, on revenue of $127 million. During the same quarter last year, net income was $20 million, or 37 cents a share, on revenue of $153 million. Electronics For Imaging said fourth-quarter earnings would be 15 to 17 cents a share on revenue of $108 million to $113 million. Analysts had expected fourth-quarter earnings of 18 cents on revenue of $122.2 million.
Inet Technologies [US:INTI] advanced 11 percent after the Richardson, Texas, communications software firm reported third-quarter earnings of $869,000, or 2 cents a share, down from a year-ago profit of $10.1 million, or 22 cents a share, but ahead of Wall Street`s consensus estimate for a loss of 2 cents a share. Revenue dove to $25.4 million in the latest three months from $41.4 million in the same period a year earlier.
InVision Technologies [US:INVN] rose more than 8 percent after the Newark, Calif., explosive detection system firm received systems orders worth a total of $3.4 million from the Philippines and France. The company will supply its CTX 9000DSi explosive detection system to the Philippines and its CTX 2500 systems to France.
Juniper Networks [US:JNPR] surged almost 27 percent after the company reported a net loss for the third quarter compared to a net profit in the same period a year ago -- a casualty of reduced capital spending in the telecom sector and a sluggish economy. The company recorded a net loss of $29.7 million, or 9 cents a share, in the quarter, compared with a net income of $58.1 million, or 17 cents, a year ago. Revenue came in at $201.7 million vs. $201.2 million. But excluding one-time items, the company had a pro forma profit of $32.5 million, or 10 cents a share, beating by 3 cents the expectations of analysts polled by Thomson Financial/First Call. Last year, Juniper made a profit of $60.3 million, or 17 cents. The company also authorized a $200 million stock buyback program for the next two years. NRG Energy [US:NRG] rose more than 5 percent after the Minneapolis firm reported third-quarter earnings of $141.6 million, or 71 cents a share, up from a year-ago profit of $88.6 million, or 49 cents a share, and 4 cents better than Wall Street expectations. The company said it remains confident it will deliver earnings of $1.35 per share in 2001 and $1.65 to $1.75 per share in 2002. NRG cited its pipeline of projects and its prudent risk-management strategies for the confidence. The company also plans to seek to increase its revolving credit line to $750 million from $500 million
Powerwave Technologies [US:PWAV] soared nearly 32 percent after the company reported a third-quarter loss of $5 million, or 8 cents a share, 2 cents wider than analysts expected. In the year-ago period, the company earned a profit of $11.6 million, or 18 cents a share. Revenue for the latest quarter totaled $64.7 million, compared with the year-ago total of $111.9 million.
Riverdeep Group plc [US:RVDP] gained more than 6 percent after the Irish firm formed a strategic alliance with Reed Elsevier plc`s Harcourt Education Group. The companies agreed to develop e-Basal interactive digital instructional content. As part of the deal, Reed agreed to invest $25 million in Riverdeep, purchasing 1.39 million Riverdeep ADRs at a price of $18 each. The purchase gives Reed a 3.8 percent stake in Riverdeep.
Sonus Networks [US:SONS] rose nearly 6 percent after the company said its third-quarter results declined from the year-ago period as carriers` spending slowed. The stock was helped by the positive news of sector-mate Juniper. Sonus said it lost $11.4 million, or 6 cents a share, on revenue of $40.3. See full story.
StorageTek [US:STK] jumped almost 16 percent after the digitized data storage products firm said it expects to exceed Wall Street`s consensus estimate for earning of 9 cents a share in the third quarter. Revenue is pegged at $500 million for the quarter, which ended on Sept. 28. StorageTek, based in Louisville, Colo., also said it has secured a multi-year revolving credit line of $150 million.

Centra Software [US:CTRA] dropped more than 33 percent after the company reported a wider-than-expected third-quarter loss. The company posted a loss of $3.3 million, or 13 cents a share, excluding one-time items. Analysts polled by First Call expected a loss of 12 cents a share. In the year-ago period, the company lost $3.3 million, or 14 cents a share. Including one-time items, the latest quarter showed a loss of $4 million, or 16 cents a share. Revenue for the quarter totaled $9.2 million, a 46 percent increase over the year-ago period. As for the fourth quarter, the company expects to lose between 7 cents and 9 cents a share on pro forma basis, while analysts currently expect a loss of penny. Revenue for the fourth quarter is expected to be between $11 million and $11.3 million.
GP Strategies [US:GPX] lost nearly 17 percent after the New York workforce development services firm said it and its unit have agreed to a 60-day extension until Dec. 14, 2001, of their amended and restated revolving credit and term loan agreement with a syndicate of banks. The company said that it expects to secure a new long-term financing deal before the extension runs out. The outstanding debt under the facility was at roughly $36 million as of Oct. 10, down from $47 million as of Mar. 31. GP currently has roughly $8.7 million available under the facility.
Measurement Specialties [US:MSS] sank almost 30 percent after the Fairfield, N.J., maker of sensor-based consumer products lowered expectations for its second-quarter results. In a press release issued after the closing bell Thursday, the company said it expects between breakeven results and a loss of a nickel a share, below Wall Street`s consensus estimate for a profit of 25 cents a share. MIPS Technologies [US:MIPS] sank almost 8 percent after the company reported a first-quarter loss of 2 cents a share, in line with Thomson Financial/First Call estimates, but down from a profit of 10 cents a share a year earlier. Revenue for the quarter was $12.5 million, a 38 percent decline, compared to $20.2 million a year ago. "Although we met analysts` earnings expectations in this challenging business environment, first-quarter revenue did not meet our goals," admitted CFO Casey Eichler. "On top of recent cost-savings measures, we are taking additional steps to manage our spending in what continues to be an uncertain global economy."
O`Charley`s [US:CHUX] fell nearly 9 percent after the company warned that it expects to report third-quarter earnings of 22 cents to 23 cents a share, excluding asset impairment charges. Revenue is expected to total $105.7 million. Analysts polled by First Call were looking for revenue of $105 million and earnings of 26 cents a share. The restaurant operator company added that comparable store sales increased 1.5 percent. The company cited the soft economy and uncertainty among consumers.
Pediatrix Medical Group [US:PDX] dropped almost 13 percent after the provider of neonatal healthcare services said that it has learned the previously disclosed investigation into its billing practices remains active. The company is being probed by the Colorado Medicaid program. Pediatrix said it has not heard from officials in Colorado in more than a year. The company added that it remains confident that its billing practices are appropriate but there can be no assurance as to whether the findings of the investigation will have a material adverse impact on its business or financial condition. Pediatrix said it looked into whether the probe was still active due to the unusual trading activity in its stock over the past week. Pediatrix`s stock fell sharply on Monday, losing more than 10 percent of its value.
Princeton Review [US:REVU] lost more than 18 percent after the New York test-preparation firm said it would meet or slightly beat Wall Street`s revenue estimate of $23 million for the third quarter, but it will miss analyst expectations for a breakeven per-share performance. Instead, it will report a loss of 3 cents a share for the period. The company cited slow sales of its prior application technologies in its Admission Services unit and business lost due to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks for the shortfall. For the fourth quarter, the company remains comfortable with current Wall Street expectations for a loss of 8 cents a share. For 2002, Princeton Review is forecasting earnings 1 cent above and revenue $3 million above current analyst views for a profit of 2 cents a share on revenue of $98.6 million
Regeneron Pharmaceuticals [US:REGN] dropped 14 percent after the company said it plans to offer $150 million worth of seven-year convertible senior subordinated notes. The company said the notes convert to its common stock but didn`t provide a breakdown. A shelf registration statement for the resale of the notes and the shares of common stock issuable upon conversion of the notes within 90 days after the closing of the offering. Regeneron plans to use the proceeds for preclinical and clinical development, expansion of manufacturing facilities, research, working capital and general corporate purposes.
Providian Financial Corp. [US:PVN] plummeted nearly 34 percent after the company warned it will fall short of its third-quarter earnings estimates and will take an $85 million charge tied to problems collecting on finance charges. See full story.
SBA Communications [US:SBAC] tumbled almost 11 percent after the Boca Raton, Fla., wireless communications infrastructure firm reported that it increased its portfolio by 210 towers to a total of 3,464. The company built 133 of the towers and acquired the remaining 77 for $23.8 million, or $309,000 per tower. As of Sept. 30, SBA had agreements in place to acquire 270 additional towers for a total purchase price of $67.8 million, or $251,000 per tower. The company also said that its charge related to the adjustment of the scale of its new tower construction would total $24.4 million.
Trans World Entertainment [US:TWMC] fell nearly 7 percent after the Albany, N.Y., retailer of music and video products said it expects to report a third-quarter loss of 25 to 30 cents a share, wider than previously anticipated. The company cited the difficult retail environment and a slowdown in sales since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Tripos [US:TRPS] slid almost 7 percent after the St. Louis provider of discovery research services said that it remains comfortable with Wall Street expectations for a profit of 6 to 7 cents per share in the third quarter. John McAlister, the company`s president and CEO, made the comments in a presentation at a conference in New York City sponsored by UBS Warburg. The results are due on Oct. 24.
Vignette [US:VIGN] dropped nearly 22 percent after the company warned that it expects to report a third-quarter core operating loss of $15.5 million, or 5 cents a share, excluding charges. Revenue is pegged at $70.5 million for the period. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial/First Call were looking for a loss of 3 cents a share on revenue of $82.7 million, on average. In addition, the Austin, Texas, provider of content-management technology said it plans to reduce its staff by 20 percent as part of an effort to adjust its cost structure. "As a result of the tragic events of Sept. 11, the timing of certain sales and anticipated service implementations in the past few weeks was affected," said Greg Peters, the company`s chairman and CEO, in a press release. "Nevertheless, we continue to aggressively manage the variables within our control: our execution, the success of our customers and partners, and the advancement of our product capabilities."
Visual Networks [US:VNWK] plunged nearly 34 percent after the Rockville, Md., maker of performance-management software for communications networks reported a third-quarter pro forma loss of $2 million, or 6 cents a share, narrower than a year-ago equivalent loss of $11.2 million, or 35 cents a share, but below Wall Street`s consensus estimate for a profit of 1 cent a share. Revenue rose to $19.2 million in the latest three months from $14.6 million in the same period a year earlier. Citing macroeconomic uncertainty and the war in Afghanistan, Visual said it expects revenue of $17 million to $19 million in the fourth quarter. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial/First Call are currently looking for earnings of 1 cent a share in the period. The company plans to reduce headcount and other operating costs in an effort to return to profitability.

Handheld device maker Handspring [US:HAND] might unveil new wireless products on Monday according to Marc Cabi, an analyst at CS First Boston. Cabi said Handspring is "pushing to a commercial launch at carriers early next year" The devices are set to be much smaller than early Palm OS smart phones and could set off a wave of catalysts for recovery over a 12- to 18-month period, Cabi said. Shares closed up 31 percent to $2.19.
Quintiles Transnational [US:QTRN] and WebMD [US:HLTH] settled litigation that will end business dealings between the two firms. WebMD will buy back its 35 million shares of stock that Quintiles owns for $185 million in cash. WebMD will continue to provide data to Quintiles until Feb. 28, and Quintiles has no obligation to share operating income with WebMD or to fund product development. Also, if WebMD is purchased before June 30, 2004, at a price greater than $4 a share or a total of $500 million, Quintiles will receive a contingent payment. Shares of Quintiles closed down 60 cents, or 4 percent, at $14.91. WebMD shares were down 23 cents, or 6 percent, at $3.52.
Verticalnet [US:VERT] said its chief financial officer, Gene Godick, resigned to "pursue entrepreneurial interests." He will stay at the company until the end of the month. Verticalnet appointed its chief operating officer, David Kostman, as interim CFO. Shares of the business-to-business software maker closed down 2.9 percent at $1.32 ahead of the report.

Amylin Pharmaceuticals [US:AMLN] jumped more than 17 percent after the company said that it will need to do additional work before it can begin selling its drug to treat diabetes. The biotech firm said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had deemed the drug "approvable" for treatment of diabetes. But Amylin also said, "approval will require additional clinical work, the specific requirements of which will be determined following further discussions with the FDA."
Cepheid [US:CPHD] zoomed more than 42 percent higher. The company, which makes a pathogen-detection device, received a boost from news that a New York employee at NBC had contracted a form of Anthrax (see 11:57 item). Prior to the news, the stock was trading around $5.50. Among other companies involved in making products for biological warfare protection and prevention, Aclara BioSciences [US:ACLA] and Strategic Diagnostics [US:SDIX] both rallied.

CLK] added almost 9 percent after the company announced a third-quarter net loss of $12.6 million, or 9 cents per share, on a 31 percent revenue decline to $92.7 million. At the end of September, the online advertising firm warned that it would report a third-quarter loss of 9 to 11 cents a share, wider than its previous outlook for a loss of 5 to 7 cents a share. Revenue jumped 47 percent in the latest three months to $18 million from $12.2 million in the same period a year earlier.
Electronics For Imaging [US:EFII] rose more than 5 percent after the company reported third-quarter net income of $11 million, or 20 cents a share, on revenue of $127 million. During the same quarter last year, net income was $20 million, or 37 cents a share, on revenue of $153 million. Electronics For Imaging said fourth-quarter earnings would be 15 to 17 cents a share on revenue of $108 million to $113 million. Analysts had expected fourth-quarter earnings of 18 cents on revenue of $122.2 million.
Inet Technologies [US:INTI] advanced 11 percent after the Richardson, Texas, communications software firm reported third-quarter earnings of $869,000, or 2 cents a share, down from a year-ago profit of $10.1 million, or 22 cents a share, but ahead of Wall Street`s consensus estimate for a loss of 2 cents a share. Revenue dove to $25.4 million in the latest three months from $41.4 million in the same period a year earlier.
InVision Technologies [US:INVN] rose more than 8 percent after the Newark, Calif., explosive detection system firm received systems orders worth a total of $3.4 million from the Philippines and France. The company will supply its CTX 9000DSi explosive detection system to the Philippines and its CTX 2500 systems to France.
Juniper Networks [US:JNPR] surged almost 27 percent after the company reported a net loss for the third quarter compared to a net profit in the same period a year ago -- a casualty of reduced capital spending in the telecom sector and a sluggish economy. The company recorded a net loss of $29.7 million, or 9 cents a share, in the quarter, compared with a net income of $58.1 million, or 17 cents, a year ago. Revenue came in at $201.7 million vs. $201.2 million. But excluding one-time items, the company had a pro forma profit of $32.5 million, or 10 cents a share, beating by 3 cents the expectations of analysts polled by Thomson Financial/First Call. Last year, Juniper made a profit of $60.3 million, or 17 cents. The company also authorized a $200 million stock buyback program for the next two years. NRG Energy [US:NRG] rose more than 5 percent after the Minneapolis firm reported third-quarter earnings of $141.6 million, or 71 cents a share, up from a year-ago profit of $88.6 million, or 49 cents a share, and 4 cents better than Wall Street expectations. The company said it remains confident it will deliver earnings of $1.35 per share in 2001 and $1.65 to $1.75 per share in 2002. NRG cited its pipeline of projects and its prudent risk-management strategies for the confidence. The company also plans to seek to increase its revolving credit line to $750 million from $500 million
Powerwave Technologies [US:PWAV] soared nearly 32 percent after the company reported a third-quarter loss of $5 million, or 8 cents a share, 2 cents wider than analysts expected. In the year-ago period, the company earned a profit of $11.6 million, or 18 cents a share. Revenue for the latest quarter totaled $64.7 million, compared with the year-ago total of $111.9 million.
Riverdeep Group plc [US:RVDP] gained more than 6 percent after the Irish firm formed a strategic alliance with Reed Elsevier plc`s Harcourt Education Group. The companies agreed to develop e-Basal interactive digital instructional content. As part of the deal, Reed agreed to invest $25 million in Riverdeep, purchasing 1.39 million Riverdeep ADRs at a price of $18 each. The purchase gives Reed a 3.8 percent stake in Riverdeep.
Sonus Networks [US:SONS] rose nearly 6 percent after the company said its third-quarter results declined from the year-ago period as carriers` spending slowed. The stock was helped by the positive news of sector-mate Juniper. Sonus said it lost $11.4 million, or 6 cents a share, on revenue of $40.3. See full story.
StorageTek [US:STK] jumped almost 16 percent after the digitized data storage products firm said it expects to exceed Wall Street`s consensus estimate for earning of 9 cents a share in the third quarter. Revenue is pegged at $500 million for the quarter, which ended on Sept. 28. StorageTek, based in Louisville, Colo., also said it has secured a multi-year revolving credit line of $150 million.

Centra Software [US:CTRA] dropped more than 33 percent after the company reported a wider-than-expected third-quarter loss. The company posted a loss of $3.3 million, or 13 cents a share, excluding one-time items. Analysts polled by First Call expected a loss of 12 cents a share. In the year-ago period, the company lost $3.3 million, or 14 cents a share. Including one-time items, the latest quarter showed a loss of $4 million, or 16 cents a share. Revenue for the quarter totaled $9.2 million, a 46 percent increase over the year-ago period. As for the fourth quarter, the company expects to lose between 7 cents and 9 cents a share on pro forma basis, while analysts currently expect a loss of penny. Revenue for the fourth quarter is expected to be between $11 million and $11.3 million.
GP Strategies [US:GPX] lost nearly 17 percent after the New York workforce development services firm said it and its unit have agreed to a 60-day extension until Dec. 14, 2001, of their amended and restated revolving credit and term loan agreement with a syndicate of banks. The company said that it expects to secure a new long-term financing deal before the extension runs out. The outstanding debt under the facility was at roughly $36 million as of Oct. 10, down from $47 million as of Mar. 31. GP currently has roughly $8.7 million available under the facility.
