PSION PLC TRADING STATEMENT
Teklogix acquisition progressing well; foreign exchange, component costs,
changing PC Card modem markets will reduce profitability in 2000
Psion PLC today provided an update on its financial performance following
third quarter trading to 30th September 2000.
Psion PLC`s acquisition of Teklogix International Inc. was completed on 20
September 2000. The integration of Psion`s existing division, Psion
Enterprise, into Teklogix to create a new division, Psion Teklogix, has
progressed well and is now largely complete. Post acquisition and integration
costs are expected to total #3.5m, of which #2m is expected to be charged this
year.
The new integrated division is focused on the provision of enterprise wireless
networking solutions and now represents Psion`s largest division, contributing
almost half of the Group`s revenues on a pro forma basis. Psion`s full year
results for 2000 will include Teklogix trading for the fourth quarter. Psion
Teklogix continues to grow in line with its performance in recent years.
Elsewhere in the business, a number of factors will affect profitability in
the year to 31st December 2000. Continuing adverse foreign exchange variances
and recent rises in component prices have affected all divisions. Psion
Connect is also being significantly affected by a slowdown in the higher
margin segments of its PC Card modem business. As a result of these factors,
combined with costs associated with the integration of Teklogix, Psion`s full
year results for 2000 will be well below current market expectations.
Unfavourable foreign exchange movements between sterling, the Euro and the
dollar have had a significant and adverse effect on Psion`s margins. The
impact has been most pronounced at Psion Computers where component purchasing
is principally dollar-denominated but a high proportion of sales is made in
Euros. In the first three quarters of 2000, foreign exchange variances have
reduced Psion`s margins by approximately 4% against the equivalent period in
1999.
Group margins have also been eroded by recent increases in component prices.
Rising costs of critical components, particularly of memory, will reduce
margins by approximately 2% for the second half of the year. This impact has
been felt across all Psion`s divisions.
Overall revenues at Psion Connect are declining but are in line with
expectations. However the company`s higher margin PC Card modem distribution
business is now experiencing a rapid decline. The company`s lower margin OEM
business continues at good levels. To address these issues Psion Connect has
today announced a significant restructuring of its business which aims to
return the division to profitability in 2001. A charge of approximately #2.5m
will be taken in 2000 against costs associated with restructuring.
Going forward, Psion Connect will focus more narrowly on the manufacture and
sale of its existing range of connectivity products for OEM customers and on
development and integration of a range of new Bluetooth and connectivity
products. Psion Connect will launch its first Bluetooth product in the first
half of 2001 but anticipates that it will trade at around breakeven until
volume shipments to blue chip OEM customers commence, it is expected, in the
second half of 2001.
Revenues at Psion Computers are strong. The company`s joint development with
Motorola of a Symbian-based Wireless Information Device product remains on
track with product shipments anticipated in the second half of 2001.
Psion continues to invest heavily in Symbian whose development of the industry
standard technology for Wireless Information Devices is on track, with some
twenty licensee products currently in development.
