- also eine günstige Gelegenheit

Boston Scientific and PercuSurge Announce Clinical Trial to Evaluate Stroke Prevention Potential of Deploying a Carotid Stent in Conjunction With a Distal Protection Device
NATICK, Mass., Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE: BSX - news), in cooperation with PercuSurge, Inc., a division of Medtronic, Inc., today announced it has enrolled its first patient in a clinical trial that deploys a carotid stent with a distal protection device, using Boston Scientific`s Carotid Wallstent® Monorail(TM) Endoprosthesis in conjunction with PercuSurge`s Guardwire Plus(TM) Distal Protection System. The study will evaluate the potential of this minimally invasive alternative to open surgery for preventing stroke.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted a conditional approval of the Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) for the SHELTER (Stenting of High risk patients Extracranial Lesions Trial with Emboli Removal) trial. The trial is a single-arm, prospective, multi-center study that is scheduled to enroll approximately 400 patients at 30 sites. It is directed specifically to patients who are at high risk for complications associated with carotid endarterectomy, a traditional form of open surgery used to remove plaque from the carotid arteries. It is the only trial using a low-profile, rapid exchange, non-nitinol stent. The trial uses the PercuSurge distal protection device designed to reduce complications that arise when particles of dislodged plaque or emboli travel through the bloodstream to the brain during surgery.
The trial`s primary investigator is Sriram Iyer, M.D., Director of Peripheral Intervention, Lenox Hill Heart and Vascular Institute, Lenox Hill Hospital, New York. ``All patients in the trial must meet previously defined high surgical risk criteria, and successful execution of the trial could lead to a shift in treatment away from open surgery to this minimally invasive procedure,`` said Dr. Iyer. ``The combined use of this stent with distal embolic protection represents a significant advance in the nonsurgical treatment of carotid artery disease.``
``The Wallstent product has enjoyed great success over the years for many clinical applications, and we`re excited about using the new low-profile Carotid Wallstent Monorail device to investigate potential for stroke prevention when deployed with a distal protection device,`` said Jim Tobin, President and CEO of Boston Scientific. ``Carotid stenting appears to be the next frontier for stenting, and this combination could significantly reduce a major cause of strokes.``
``The GuardWire Plus Distal Protection System has shown a 50 percent reduction in adverse events in saphenous vein grafts, as demonstrated in the results of our recently concluded SAFER trial,`` said Gary E. Mistlin, General Manager of PercuSurge. ``By containing and removing embolic particles during stenting of the carotid arteries, we hope to be able to bring this same benefit to the area of stroke prevention.``
According to the American Heart Association, strokes affect approximately 600,000 people annually in the United States and are the third leading cause of death. Strokes are also the leading cause of serious, long-term disability. It is estimated that 20 to 30 percent of strokes are a direct result of atherosclerotic disease.
Boston Scientific is a worldwide developer, manufacturer and marketer of medical devices. The company`s products are used in a broad range of interventional medical specialties.
This press release contains forward-looking statements. Boston Scientific wishes to caution the reader that actual results may differ from those discussed in the forward-looking statements and may be affected by, among other things, risks associated with new product development, clinical trials, regulatory approval, commercialization of new technologies, competitive offerings and other factors described in the company`s filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
