T-Netix Gets Boost As Firm Announces Internet Services Deal With US West
NEW YORK -- T-Netix Inc., an outsourcing company which provides call processing and billing services for prisons to telecom companies, is now branching out to also manage Internet bandwidth for large telecom carriers, according to the company`s chief executive officer.
In the first deal of its kind, which may someday lead T-Netix to become a full-fledged Internet service provider, T-Netix signed a contract with US West Inc.`s (USW) Internet unit, US West.net. News of the deal sent T-Netix`s shares up as much 88% Friday.
T-Netix will buy and resell Internet bandwidth to US West.net customers over long-distance areas that can`t be serviced by the local telecom carrier - the InterLATA Internet services, the company said Friday.
"It`s a stepping stone to get into Internet services for our existing technology and new services in new industries," company Chief Executive Alvyn Schopp said in an interview with Dow Jones.
T-Netix`s contract will last for at least 16 months and beyond, depending on if and when the Federal Communications Commission grants US West.net the license to carry out those services by itself, Schopp said.
In 2000, the deal will add $20 million to $25 million in revenue, or 10 cents a share to its earnings, and the contribution is contingent upon how much cost savings US West.net can achieve from using T-Netix`s services, among other factors, Schopp said.
Schopp said that its 2000 revenue will exceed $100 million, roughly $31 million above its projected revenue of $69 million in 1999, Schopp said.
He said the company is undervalued based on these figures and because "it has real earnings and is expected to stay profitable."
T-Netix shares (TNTX) closed Friday up $2.375, or 50%, at $7.125 on volume of 3.3 million shares, compared with average daily volume of 20,300 shares. Earlier in the day, the shares reached a high of $8.938.
Based in Englewood, Colo., T-Netix currently derives much of its revenue from providing its call processing technology in prisons to large telecommunications companies, including AT&T Corp. (T), SBC Communications Inc. (SBC) and Bell Atlantic Crop. (BEL).
An example of the uses of T-Netix`s technology is a parole officer being able to track the geographical location of parolee.
The other ends of T-Netix`s business include voice-recognition services through its SpeakEZ technology which has uses within the prison system. Schopp, however, said the company hopes to bundle the technology with Internet services so that online traders, say, would be able to make secured stock trades using their voice instead of a password.
The transactions are secured because the voice has to match exactly, Schopp explained.
