LONDON, May 10 (Reuters) - Europe`s newly merged pharmaceutical companies are enjoying faster growth
than their U.S. rivals in the United States, according to analysts at Lehman Brothers.

The investment bank Europe`s top players had reinvested their merger cost savings into U.S. marketing
strength

The benefits were now evident. Whereas U.S. companies consistently beat the Europeans until 2000, the
following year the Europeans achieved sales growth in excess of 20 percent in the U.S. market whereas the
Americans managed less than 10 percent.

The analysts forecast that the Europeans will again beat the Americans in their home market this year --
though by only 18 versus 14 percent.

The report added that European companies had a larger "tail" of old products, which have already moved
beyond the shock of losing patent protection, and were at significantly lower risk from generic competition than
their U.S. peers.

"U.S. companies have 32 percent of sales from drugs launched in 1991-95 versus 22 percent for Europeans,"
Lehman said.

"Assuming the average effective patent life is 10-12 years (20 years patent life less 8-10 years to reach market)
then the U.S. companies will face a structurally larger proportion of their sales being eroded by generics over
the next few years."

The analysts` conclusion is to favour European stocks, especially Novartis AG <NOVZn.VX>, Aventis SA
<AVEP.PA> and GlaxoSmithKline Plc (UK:GSK) . But within the U.S. they still liked Eli Lilly and Co (LLY) ,
Pfizer Inc (PFE) and Merck and Co Inc (MRK) . "
