Eine Einstufung von First Boston besagt "BUY" mit Kursziel
27 US$ auf 12 Monatssicht, außerdem klare Vorteile gegenüber
      Mitbewerbern.

      Kauf.

Was denkt Ihr?

ENE problems to impact telecom: Analyst (CIEN, JNPR, LU, NT, ENE, CSCO) By Susan Lerner
Friedman Billings Ramsey analyst Susan Kalla is warning clients of a ripple effect from Enron`s insolvency crisis, saying the market for telecom equipment could decline faster than expected. Enron`s problems increase Kalla`s concern that her forecast of a 33 percent capex downturn in 2002 is optimistic. Kalla says systematic risk in telecom increases if Enron (ENE) shuts down its network adding that Enron`s withdrawal from bankdidth trading could reduce liquidity, putting a squeeze on others. Kalla believes that Ciena (CIEN) , Juniper Networks (JNPR) , Lucent (LU) and Nortel (NT) have exposure to a potential telecom flashpoint because consensus estimates are high and that Cisco (CSCO) reflects a worst case scenario.

Mein Kuzi ist z. Z. maximal 21,50 USD.

CIENA - Fiber Optic High End Techtitel
      -----------------------------------------------------------

Also kurzfristig rein charttechnisch eher nicht.

Realistisch sind 18 USD mit viel Glück 21 USD als Spitze.
Da liegen deftige Widerstände in Massen.

      Ciena exec sees turnaround

      By Mike Tarsala, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 12:22 PM ET Jan. 28, 2002

      SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) --
The networking equipment industry could soon see sales growth for the kinds of equipment that combines functions and automates networks, said Thomas Mock, Ciena`s (CIEN) vice president of product portfolio management.

Mock addressed investors at the Banc of America Technology Conference.
      See full conference coverage.

Mock said he sees capital-spending-to-revenue ratios in the networking equipment industry returning to the stronger levels like those seen in the late 1990s.
And he sees consolidation ahead for some of the companies in his industry.

He added that telecommunications carriers, the equipment makers` main customers, are getting back to historical spending levels.

Ciena shares were down 1.8 percent to $13.18 at midday.

Ciena VP sees some signs carriers ready to build

      MONDAY, JANUARY 28, 2002 4:29 PM
      - Reuters U.S. Company News

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Telecommunications carriers may soon have to resume building networks as key traffic routes become congested, an executive at optical networking company Ciena Corp. (CIEN) said on Monday.

Thomas Mock, vice president of product portfolio management, said it was still too early to call a rebound for the beleaguered sector. The company in December warned it could lose money this year as customers cut capital spending.

"I wouldn`t say we`ve seen anything fundamentally change in the environment since then," he said on the sidelines of the Banc of America investor conference. "There is still some bad news," like declining prices for long distance services, he said.

But Mock said a number of hopeful signs suggested bottlenecks that held up new network building were clearing up.

"We`re beginning to correct inventory excesses that the carriers were under," he said.

Mock said operating costs were stabilizing, the ratio of carrier capital expenditures to revenue was returning to the more normal levels of the late 1990s, with estimates at 29 percent for 2001 and 22 percent for 2002, suggesting a return to normality.

And telecommunications traffic on major routes was reaching the point where new investments would be needed, he added.

Mock said 14 of 22 major communications routes between pairs of cities were at around 70 percent of network capacity utilization. Of the 22 routes, 17 were around 60 percent of capacity.

The 70 percent level typically triggered major carriers to resume building, he said.

The carriers had also tweaked their networks to improve performance with new technology about as far as they could.

"You are getting to the point where we`ve mined about as much capacity as we can out of the infrastructure that has been built, and carriers are soon going to have to look at new infrastructure builds," Mock said.

But he said the timing was still unclear. "It is going to be difficult to say what 2002 holds in aggregate," he concluded.

      RESEARCH ALERT-CSFB cuts Ciena estimates
      THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 2002 2:00 PM
      - Reuters U.S. Company News

CHICAGO, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Credit Suisse First Boston cuts its financial estimates on Thursday for optical networking firm Ciena Corp. (CIEN) , citing near-term weakness in the long-haul optical market.

Credit Suisse First Boston analyst James Parmelee said in a research note that he was cutting his fiscal 2002 sales
estimate to $1 billion from $1.1 billion and widening his estimated loss per share to 41 cents from a loss of 34 cents.

He also cut his fiscal 2003 sales estimate to $1.4 billion from $1.5 billion,
but left his estimated profit for that year unchanged at 20 cents a share.

For the first quarter of fiscal 2002, Parmelee cut his sales estimate to $215 million from $240 million and maintained an estimate for a loss of 12 cents a share.

The reduction was mostly due to lower expectations for Ciena`s long-haul optical business based on weakness in that sector and reliance on carriers like Qwest Communications International Inc. (Q) ,
which have significantly cut capital spending, he said.

Long-term, Ciena will be a significant beneficiary of a recovery in the optical networking equipment market emerging some time in late 2002 or early 2003 based on relative product strength in switching and transport, Parmelee said.
In afternoon trade, Ciena was off 52 cents to $12.99 a share.

      Noch´n downgrade diesmal von UBS

2:55pm 02/01/02 UBS lowers Ciena price target to $16 (CIEN) By Michael Baron
Ciena (CIEN) is losing 65 cents, or 5.1 percent, to $12.05, in late action. Shares of the Linthicum, Md., fiber optics firm is selling off after UBS Warburg lowered its estimates 2002 and 2003 due to continued market weakness and stiffer competition. The firm maintained its "hold" rating on Ciena, but it lowered its price target to $16 per share from $19. UBS cited the recent financial reports of other players in the fiber optics sector such as JDS Uniphase (JDSU) and Nortel (NT) as evidence that the market remains sluggish. One potential competitior cited by UBS was Lucent (LU) , which the firm said is making a push into Ciena`s core long-haul market.

Ciena chairman, CEO paid BONUSES for 2001
      FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 01, 2002 7:07 PM
      - Reuters U.S. Company News

LOS ANGELES, Feb 1 (Reuters) -
The chairman and chief executive of optical networking company Ciena Corp. (CIEN) received bonuses in 2001 equal to or larger than their base salaries and were guaranteed new payments if company is taken over and they are fired, Ciena said on Friday.

In a proxy statement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Linthicum, Maryland-based Ciena said Chairman Patrick Nettles received a $700,000 bonus on top of his $700,000 salary last year.

Chief Executive Gary Smith received a bonus of $575,000 on top of his salary of $569,231.

The company said the bonus for Smith, who became CEO in May 2001, was paid because the company met or exceeded its financial goals for each of the last two quarters of fiscal 2001.

Ciena said Smith was again eligible for a bonus of up to 100 percent of his salary in fiscal 2002, based on a 25 percent bonus for each quarter in which objectives are met or exceeded.

The company also said Smith`s employment agreement guaranteed him a payment of $3 million after Aug. 18, unless Ciena changes ownership and he is fired in a management shake-up.

In that case, the $3 million would be due to Smith at the time, the company said.

In addition, a new severance agreement signed in December guarantees Smith $3 million, or three times his salary and bonus at the time, whichever is greater. In addition, all of his share options in the company would vest immediately if he were fired without cause within a year of a change in the company`s control, Ciena said.

Both Smith and Nettles also received supplemental stock grants in October, along with the rest of the company`s board and other company employees who held options with strike prices greater than $40.

Nettles received options for 170,300 shares while Smith received options for 256,600 shares, at a strike price of $16.38 per share.

According to Ciena`s filing, as of Oct. 31 Nettles held exercisable options worth $26.9 million, while Smith had such in-the-money options worth $387,522.

A spokesman for Ciena was not immediately available for comment.

In mid-December, Ciena posted a net loss of $1.8 billion for its fiscal fourth quarter after writing down most of the value of an acquisition of Cyras Systems Inc in early 2001 for $2.6 billion. The company also said it expected more weakness during the current quarter.

For the full fiscal year, Ciena posted a loss of $1.8 billion, or $5.75 per share, compared with a net profit of $81.4 million, or 27 cents per share, in fiscal 2000.

Ciena shares closed on Friday down 5.5 percent at $12. The stock has lost 85 percent over the last 52 weeks.

The proxy statement was filed in connection with the company`s annual meeting, scheduled for Mar. 7. The only scheduled business for the meeting listed in the proxy was the election of three members of the board of directors.

      RESEARCH ALERT

-ABN AMRO cuts Ciena rating to `hold`

      MONDAY, FEBRUARY 04, 2002 3:59 PM - Reuters U.S. Company News

CHICAGO, Feb 4 (Reuters) - ABN AMRO said it cut its rating on optical networking company Ciena Corp. (CIEN) on Monday to ``hold`` from ``add,`` citing weak results by competitors.

Analyst Kenneth Leon in a research note said absent profitability in fiscal 2002, he believes Ciena management will have to capitulate and take necessary cost-cuts to achieve breakeven.

He also cut his earnings per share estimate for fiscal 2002 to a loss of 26 cents from a loss of 13 cents, and reduced his estimate for a 2003 per share profit to 7 cents from 13 cents. He also revised his 2002 and 2003 revenue estimates to $965 million and $1.15 billion, from $1.155 billion and $1.37 billion, respectively.

Ciena`s stock was off $1.79, or almost 15 percent, at $10.21 in afternoon trading on Nasdaq.

Low capital spending from large service providers has hurt Ciena`s prospects of getting early contract wins for 2002, Leon said in the report.

While he still likes the competitive position of Ciena`s CoreDirector optical switching product, he has concerns about the firm`s overall competitive position.

U.S. stocks to fall at open after Ciena warns

      By Haitham Haddadin

NEW YORK, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Stocks were set to open flat to lower on Tuesday as sentiment soured after Ciena Corp. (CIEN) warned results would disappoint and key brokerages issued negative comments on other technology companies.

Investors await potentially market-moving economic data for more clues on the status of the world`s largest economy. Those include orders in the non-manufacturing services sector last month, January layoffs, factory orders for December and weekly data on U.S. business activity, all due after the open.

Ahead of the open, the Street got some downbeat figures. U.S. chain store sales slipped in the latest week as the onset of cold weather kept consumers away from department stores, the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and UBS Warburg reported in their Weekly Chain Store Sales Snapshot.

Another sales report came in mixed. Retail sales at discount, chain and department stores rose in the four retail weeks of January, but the pace of sales slowed modestly in the latest week, Instinet Research said in its weekly report.

Ciena, the optical networking company, said it would report a wider fiscal quarterly loss than analysts had expected. It said several major customers were making significant reductions in equipment purchases, and said it would cut about 12 percent of its work force.

Suppliers of the communications and telecommunications industries have been hit hard the past year by the slowdown in spending, including by some of Ciena`s largest customers like Qwest Communications International Inc. (Q) .

Ciena shares were halted briefly, but later dropped to $8.70 in pre-open trade from a close at $10.12 on Monday.

More negative news came from the Wall Street houses. Bear Stearns said it cut handheld computer maker Palm Inc. (PALM) . to "neutral" from "attractive", adding the downgrade was related to the new Palm i705 product. Palm shares fell to $3.15 pre-open from a close of $3.31.

"Given that execution was the key element behind our upgrade of the stock, we are downgrading back to Neutral -- we are concerned that the difficulties with launch of i705 could lead to a shortfall in sales and earnings," said Bear Stearns analyst Andrew Neff in a note to clients.

Morgan Stanley cut Sprint PCS Group (PCS) to "neutral" from "outperform". Sprint, the nation`s fourth-largest wireless firm, said after the close on Monday its fourth-quarter net loss narrowed from a year earlier and revenues rose as it added 1.11 million net subscribers as expected. Shares closed at $13.75 but fell to $13 in pre-open trade.

Merrill Lynch said it cut General Dynamics (GD) , the defense contracting giant, to a mid-term rating of "buy" from "strong buy". General Dynamics closed at $88.98 Monday and no trades were reported early Tuesday.

Tuesday`s raft of data meanwhile could influence trading, traders said, but investors` jitters about Corporate America`s accounting practices remain the wild card.

"All those things (data) are important but a lot of them are also factored into the market already," said Bill Punk, managing partner at Punk Ziegel & Co. "What is taking place in the market right now is more of the Enrons of the world, and the negative stories that are out there on a consistent basis. Once that stops, equities will get back to acting better."

Stocks crumbled on Monday, sending the broad market to a three-month low, as investors caught a fresh bout of "Enronitis" - the Street`s nickname for the confidence-sapping malaise that has investors questioning the honesty of corporate financial statements.

Wall Street has been grappling with a crisis of confidence after accounting problems at energy trading giant Enron Corp. (ENRNQ) (ENE) led to its record collapse and sent investors back to corporate books in search of other possible problems. Tyco International Ltd. (TYC) and other companies with complicated financial structures like General Electric Co. (GE) were caught in the maelstrom.

Tyco continued its decline, falling in pre-open trade to $28.20 from Monday`s close of $29.90, while GE traded at a par with its close of $35 but later rose to $35.45 after it reaffirmed it`s earnings target for 2002.

Equity index futures, which earlier were mixed, all moved into negative territory and were flagging a lower open across the board on Wall Street.

Front-month Standard & Poor`s 500 () futures fell 2.30 points at 1,093, having trade slightly higher earlier, and Dow futures cut a gain of about 11 points to fall 23 points at 9,660. The Nasdaq 100 contract for March moved deeper into the red, down 14 points to 1,473, suggesting a decline of about 0.90 percent at the open.

"We might open up a little bit sloppy but I don`t think it will last. The market is oversold," Lance Zipper, managing director of equity trading at Brean Murray & Co. "We had a pretty strong sell-off yesterday with everybody nervous about the accounting procedures. Today I think we will have some short covering."

On Monday, the broader Standard & Poor`s 500 Index () lost 27.76 points, or 2.47 percent, to 1,094.44 -- its lowest close since Nov. 2. The Nasdaq Composite Index () fell 55.71 points, or 2.91 percent, to 1,855.53. That was the tech-laced index`s lowest finish since Nov. 12. The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average () tumbled 220.17 points, or 2.22 percent, to 9,687.09 -- its lowest close since Jan. 29.

Cisco, Ciena sign contracts with AT&T

      11 Feb 2002, 1:22pm ET

(Recasts with Ciena background, adds analyst assessment, updates stock action, changes dateline from SAN JOSE, Calif.)

CHICAGO, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Networking companies Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) and Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ:CIEN) said on Monday they signed contracts worth millions of dollars to supply equipment for long-distance telephone carrier AT&T Corp.`s (NYSE:T) optical network.

San Jose, California-based Cisco, the world`s largest maker of equipment that directs traffic on the Internet, said AT&T has installed Cisco`s ONS 15454 Sonet Multiservice Platform optical transport system, a box that allows transport of voice, video and data, as well as the software to manage the system.

Exact terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Cisco said it is a multiyear, multimillion-dollar contract.

UBS Warburg analyst Nikos Theodosopoulos estimated the contracts were worth $50 million to $100 million for both Cisco and Ciena.

Cisco`s stock was up 64 cents, or 3.8 percent, at $17.40, while Ciena was up 68 cents, or 7.2 percent, at $10.14 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq.

AT&T`s new intelligent optical network will carry Private Line, Internet, voice, data and video traffic while restoring service faster in the event of a failure or disaster, and significantly improving service delivery intervals, Cisco said.

Ciena, based in Linthicum, Maryland, will supply its CoreDirector switch to AT&T, and Theodosopoulos said the phone giant is likely the new 10 percent customer Ciena referenced but did not identify on Feb. 5 when it warned about its first-quarter results. He said AT&T likely provided as much as 20 percent of Ciena`s revenues in its fiscal first quarter.

Ciena signed its first contract with AT&T last May, providing the phone giant with its MultiWave Metro fiber-optic transport system.

Ciena (NASDAQ:CIEN) to Buy ONI Systems (NASDAQ:ONI)
For $900 Million Stock Swap; Deal Brings Cash and More Metro To Ciena.

In a deal announced Feb. 18 the long-awaited consolidation in optical networking begins as Ciena agrees to acquire ONI in a stock swap that values ONI at about $6.44 per share.

ONI closed Feb. 15 at $5.54 per share, so Ciena`s offer is a 16% premium versus Friday`s close.

Under terms of the offer each share of ONI common stock will be exchanged for 0.7104 shares of CIEN.
ONI shareholders will own about 24% of the combined company, to be called Ciena.

The acquisition highlights the enormous pressure that one-trick telecom and networking equipment companies have when large carriers want end-to-end solutions.

ONI helps Ciena in the metro optical networking markets.

For the fiscal year ended 10/31/01, Ciena revenues rose 87% to $1.6 billion.
Net loss totaled $1.79 billion vs. an income of $81.4 million.
Net loss reflects a $1.72 billion charge for goodwill.

For the fiscal year ended 12/31/01, ONI Systems revenues totaled $195.7 million, up from $59.7 million.
Net loss was up 33% to $188.3 million.

      What the deal does:

      1) Makes Ciena a leader in optical for metro markets

      2) Gives Ciena a wider product line to sell to wider customer base.

      3) Helps Ciena cut expenses by reducing marketing, personnel and R&D costs

Our analysis shows that Ciena is getting a good deal due to ONI`s cash position, that puts this at what Wall Street merger pros call "effective" deal value.
The "effective" deal value is $342 million once we factor in ONI`s working capital.

In other words, Ciena pays .7104 shares of CIEN for ONI and inherits a nice cash pool besides.
Ciena already has about $640 million working capital as of its latest quarter.
So this is about adding cash to cash and product to product, survival of the fittest.

      ONI Systems NASDAQ:ONIS

      Shares out 139.67

      Price 2/15 $ 5.54

      Market cap $ 773.78

      Ciena Bid $ 900.00

      Per share $ 6.44

      Bid vs. close 16%

      Net working capital $ 557.78

      Effective deal value $ 342.22
(in millions, except for share price)

Bottom line is ONI gets bailed out by a stronger player, Ciena .

We view Ciena as an up-and-coming consolidator in the end-to-end optical space, unless its rivals and larger networking firms act first to acquire the smaller providers.

Arbitrageurs will have fun with this one, since ONIS trades at a 16% discount to the CIEN bid.
Another angle is for every share of ONIS its shareholders will get .7104 shares of CIEN.
Two ways to play the discount to the bid.

      Ciena tumbles after dour outlook
      Warning overshadows narrow first-quarter loss
      By CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 4:04 PM ET Feb. 21, 2002

LINTHICUM, Md. (CBS.MW) -- Ciena shares fell almost 13 percent to a new 52-week low Thursday after the networking company issued a second-quarter revenue warning along with a narrower-than-expected first-quarter loss.

Warnings from Ciena, BellSouth clock U.S. indexes
Manufacturing on the mend in Philly region
      Tech stock downturn widens
US leading indicators point to strong recovery

The Linthicum, Md.-based optical networking company (CIEN: news, chart, profile) posted a first-quarter loss of $70.6 million, or 22 cents a share, a sharp turnaround from net income of $53.2 million, or 19 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter.

Ciena ended down $1.10 to $7.60, its lowest level for the day, with more than 26 million shares changing hands.

The adjusted quarterly net loss, excluding restructuring costs, deferred stock compensation charges, payroll taxes on stock option exercises, amortization of intangibles and net losses on equity investments was $56.7 million, or 17 cents a share. That bested the Thomson Financial/First Call consensus Wall Street estimate for a 20-cent loss.

The optical networking company reported revenue of $162.2 million in the fiscal first quarter vs. $352 million in the year-ago quarter.

Ciena also said it believes second-quarter revenue will come in at $100 million, well off analysts` estimate of $148.5 million.

The company noted that "two of its historically most important customers may purchase significantly less" than had been previously indicated.

"There continues to be a high level of uncertainty surrounding service providers` near-term spending. In our ongoing conversations with our customers we continue to receive indications of further deployment delays," said CEO Gary Smith, in a statement.

Ciena did not name the customers.

In a move to boost sales, Ciena recently bid for ONI Systems (ONIS: news, chart, profile), another optical network company. See full ONI Systems story. But the impact of the all-stock acquisition on financial results is being re-weighed in light of the warning.

"The ONI transaction will likely further trim the numbers in both FY 02 and FY 03 despite management`s guidance of net neutral in 02 and accretive in FY 03," wrote Salomon Smith Barney analyst Alex Henderson.

He reduced his full-year 2002 revenue target to $516 million, down from $689.6 million, and full-year 2003 should come in at $579 million, down from $865 million, excluding ONI Systems` results. Losses should come in at 71 cents a share, wider than the earlier 2002 estimate of 55 cents. Losses for 2003 will hit 46 cents a share, wider than the earlier 21-cent estimate.

The 2002 consensus estimate, according to the average compiled by First Call, was for revenue of $641.2 million and $838.6 million for 2003.

ONI shares were down 30 cents to $5.70.

Ciena, ONI spell out break-up fees in deal

      MONDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2002 5:50 PM
      - Reuters U.S. Company News

NEW YORK, Feb 25 (Reuters) - Optical networking company Ciena Corp. (CIEN) would receive $36.7 million if another bidder emerges for ONI Systems Corp. (ONIS) , according to documents filed on Monday with regulators.

Ciena, which agreed last week to buy ONI for $900 million in stock, would receive the break-up fee, as well as up to $2 million in expenses if ONI`s board supports another bidder, according to an ONI filing with the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission.

If Ciena, based in Linthicum, Maryland, breaks off the deal because a company bids for Ciena, San Jose, California-based ONI would receive $87.2 million, as well as up to $2 million in expenses, according to the documents.

Ciena made the deal in an effort to bolster its presence in the metropolitan optical networking markets, which are expected to see stronger growth than the long-distance markets served by Ciena. The deal is expected to close in the second or third quarters.

Nortel Networks: Neues Produkt ein Flop?
      ------------------------------------------------------------

      Nortel selbst reagierte promt.

      ONI reviews takeover by Ciena

By Stephanie Kirchgaessner in New York
      Published: February 26 2002 22:49
      Last Updated: February 27 2002 13:38

ONI System, the optical network supplier, on Wednesday said it was "reviewing the facts" related to its $900m takeover by rival Ciena.

The companies said they had postponed a roadshow scheduled for Thursday and Friday in which the companies` executives would promote the merger.

Last week, two days after announcing it was buying ONI in an all-stock deal, Ciena warned that its second-quarter sales would drop 40 per cent.
The announcement, which came as a surprise to ONI executives, prompted some Wall Street analysts to question whether terms of the agreed merger would be changed to reflect the expected sales downfall.

"From our side, we are doing some investigating. The news that came out was new.
As a result, we are spending time talking to Ciena, to understand what the situation is in terms of their business," an ONI spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

ONI said it was "too early to say the merger might not go forward", but refused to comment on whether Ciena`s drop in sales would have an impact on the terms of the deal.

The news has put ONI in a difficult position. The company has already signalled to Wall Street that it needs a large partner to weather the storm breaking over the battered telecom sector.
But Ciena`s news that two of its large customers were cutting back significantly in spending on Ciena`s products put into doubt comments made by Hugh Martin, ONI`s chairman and CEO, about the benefits ONI could get from access to Ciena customers.
It is also unlikely that other merger partners will emerge because the telecoms sector is so volatile.

A Ciena spokesman said on Tuesday that the merger was "going full steam ahead", and that ONI was "doing everything they should be doing" to get approval for the deal.
      Both companies require shareholder approval.

The proposed acquisition, which would combine two of the largest optical communications companies, has a $36.7m break-up fee, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Shares in Ciena closed Tuesday`s trading day up 12 cents at $8.05 , while ONI traded up 20 cents to $5.69.

Ciena soars 16 percent after upgrade
(CIEN, ONIS, SONS) By Allen Wan

Shates of fiber-optic company Ciena (CIEN) surged 16 percent, or $1.74, to $10.74, to lead gainers on the Nasdaq after Buckingham Research Group upgraded the company to "neutral" from "swap".
Buckingham called Ciena, along with Oni Systems (ONIS) and Sonus Networks (SONS) , a "survivor" company that should benefit from stabilizing order patterns.
It said that investors have seemingly stopped reacting to bad news and are covering large short positions, which is typically the first step in anticipating a stock/sector recovery.
Shares of Oni surged 13.7 percent, while Sonus gained 9.1 percent.

      Cisco Systems vor Ciena-Übernahme?
      ------------------------------------------------------------

Ciena-Aktien gewinnen aktuell rund 15%, Cisco Aktien verlieren 2,6%.

      Ciena (NASDAQ:CIEN)

Optical networkers Ciena and its acquisition target ONI Systems (NASDAQ:ONIS) both jump on rumors that networking king Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) could acquire them both.

March 11 CIEN shares gain 11% $10.29 per share, while ONIS shares gain almost 9% to $7.11 per share. Ciena already has a $900 million stock offer for ONI Systems.

Short-term take: Another target for a larger networking company could be next-gen voice over Internet firm Sonus Networks (NASDAQ:SONS), which we`re buying.
Sonus has about $97 million working capital and we think could be a leader in voice packet networking, which we see as augmenting dedicated circuit switching.
Rumors aside, we think smaller optical companies are cash-rich and sales and marketing poor.
Half a dozen of them need to be acquired to become long-term global pieces of tomorrow`s networks.

      Long-term outlook:
With $22 billion in cash and a viable stock, Cisco has a full buffet available of optical networking firms it could choose to acquire.
The once-acquisitive Cisco hasn`t had a string of acquisitions in years, in what used to be the preferred route for Cisco to grow.
Whether it`s Ciena-ONI or other small optical players, Cisco should act and take advantage of the `blue light special` in these optical stocks.
Today`s famine in telecom should give way to steadier growth as optical slowly integrates into next-generation networks.
Cisco needs to be ready for that.

Unveils WavelengthDirector Optical Add/Drop Mux, Enabling Increased Automation Of Customer Networks

      18 Mar 2002, 10:04am ET
      - - - - -
      LINTHICUM, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 2002--
Company Launches Automation Program Designed to Offer the Benefits of Distributed Intelligence to Carriers

CIENA(R) Corporation (NASDAQ:CIEN) plans to demonstrate WavelengthDirector(TM), its new Optical Add/Drop Multiplexing (OADM) product this week at OFC 2002 in Anaheim, California.
WavelengthDirector OADM will allow carriers the flexibility of software provisioning, and can add and drop wavelengths with single channel granularity along network routes.

The initial version of WavelengthDirector is expected to be in customer lab trials this summer.

WavelengthDirector is the first element of CIENA`s new Automation product and feature program designed to bring the benefits of distributed intelligence to the Company`s current and potential customers, telecom service providers.

"One of the customer benefits we anticipate for customers is significant operating expense savings, thanks to WavelengthDirector allowing carriers to do network configuration remotely," said Steve Alexander, senior vice president and chief technology officer at CIENA.
"In addition to the cost savings, this OADM will provide carriers with unparalleled network flexibility."

WavelengthDirector, which enables CIENA`s transport products to work in concert with CoreDirector(TM), can add or drop any or all wavelengths based on commands from the system software.

WavelengthDirector OADM is based upon next generation optical filtering technology that allows very small portions of the optical spectrum to be selectively added and dropped.
When combined with the latest CIENA advances in ultra long-haul transport, the WavelengthDirector allows dramatic reductions in the capital and operational costs associated with deploying networks by replacing costly back-to-back terminals that process all wavelengths with a device that processes only the wavelengths needed at that site. CoreStream transport, WavelengthDirector OADM and CoreDirector combine to offer an intelligent, highly flexible, yet cost effective solution for optical networking in the core of today`s highest performance networks.

      Automation Program
One of the differentiating traits of CIENA`s LightWorks(TM) products is that they provide distributed intelligence for carrier networks.
This results in the highest available level of network automation for carriers that deploy them. The goal of the Automation program is for CIENA to use its experience with distributed intelligence to maximize the automation benefits for carriers deploying the Company`s products.

"We are focused on helping our customers build the world`s most efficient networks, not on throwing around technology terms," said Alexander.
      "It`s not simply about intelligence.
It`s about the benefit that distributed intelligence offers our customers. And the key benefit is automation, in CoreDirector, now WavelengthDirector and then beyond."

"For long haul carriers, it`s not about products, it`s about networks," said Dana Cooperson, director of optical networking at RHK, Inc. "Flexible, dynamically configurable add/drop functionality is a critical component of efficient extended- and ultra-long haul networks.
The WavelengthDirector OADM, together with other CIENA equipment, creates a new way for carriers to harness distributed intelligence to build and remotely manage highly functional, lower cost optical networks."

CIENA`s product family spans the critical areas of next-eneration intelligent optical networking.
With the products that form CIENA`s revolutionary LightWorks architecture, service providers can build a LightWorks network that reaches from the core of the network to the access edge.
CIENA is the only next-generation provider to offer carriers a complete range of products in long-distance optical transport, metropolitan optical transport, intelligent optical switching and network management.

      ABOUT CIENA
CIENA Corporation`s market-leading optical networking systems form the core for the new era of networks and services worldwide.
CIENA`s LightWorks architecture enables next-generation optical services and changes the fundamental economics of service-provider networks by simplifying the network and reducing the cost to operate it.

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 18 (Reuters) -

ONI Systems Corp. (NASDAQ:ONIS), a networking equipment maker in the process of merging with Ciena Corp. NASDAQ:CIEN), said on Monday it expects to post a wider first-quarter loss than previously estimated.

The company said it cut its guidance for earnings and revenues because of the decline in capital spending by telecommunications companies.

ONI said it expects first-quarter revenues of $18 million to $24 million and a pro-forma loss, excluding deferred stock compensation and amortization of intangibles, in the range of 24 cents to 27 cents per diluted share.

ONI also said the proposed merger with Ciena is moving forward as planned and is expected to close during the second or third calendar quarter of 2002.

UPDATE 1-Ciena to cut jobs, sees restructuring charges

      26 Mar 2002, 10:18am ET
      - - - - -
LINTHICUM, Md., March 26 (Reuters) - Optical networking company Ciena Corp.
(NASDAQ:CIEN) on Tuesday said it will cut another 650 jobs, or 22 percent of its total work force, amid a slowdown in telecommunications spending.

"The telecom equipment market has changed dramatically in the last year and we have to adjust to those changes," Ciena President and Chief Executive Gary Smith said in a statement.
"Ciena`s future success depends on our ability to adapt the way we think and the way we run our business."

He added the job cuts will help the company return to profitability.
Ciena currently employs slightly more than 2,900 people.

Ciena`s stock was off 3 cents at $8.32 in heavy Nasdaq trading.

Last month, Ciena cut 400 jobs, or 12 percent of its work force at the time.
It also posted a record quarterly operating loss of almost $57 million in its fiscal first quarter and warned second-quarter results would lag expectations.

Ciena and other telecom suppliers, including Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU) and Nortel Networks Corp. (TSE:NT) (NYSE:NT) have been hurt by the drastic slowdown by large telephone companies such as Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE:Q) and Sprint Corp. (NYSE:FON)

CIBC World Markets analyst Rick Schafer said the cuts were a good first step, but he still does not see Ciena returning to profitability until fiscal year 2004 unless business conditions change.

"Potentially there`s more that could be done," he said. "There`s always more.
It depends on how long and painful this downturn is. Right now, we`re just staring into the abyss."

Nevertheless, Ciena has a strong balance sheet, Schafer said, and these job cuts should lower Ciena`s break-even point to about $250 million in quarterly revenues from more than $300 million.
Ciena`s first-quarter revenues were $162.2 million, down from $352 million a year earlier.

The Linthicum, Maryland-based company said the job cuts will save about $145 million to $155 million annually, including $85 million to $90 million at the operating expense level.
Ciena expects most of the cost savings to be in place by the fiscal third quarter.

Including a previous $9 million to $11 million it forecast for the job cuts announced last month, Ciena expects to take total charge in the fiscal second quarter of $334 million to $371 million.

Of that total expected charge, Ciena expects to record a restructuring charge of between $125 million and $135 million related to the latest job cuts, lease terminations and the write-down of certain property.
The rest is about $200 million to $225 million for excess inventory.

Employees affected by the latest job cuts will be paid through May 24, be eligible for severance packages and receive outplacement assistance, Ciena said.

      CIENA Announces Operational Realignment

      26 Mar 2002, 09:02am ET
      - - - - -
LINTHICUM, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 26, 2002--CIENA(R) Corporation (NASDAQ:CIEN) today announced an immediate workforce reduction of approximately 650 employees, or approximately 22 percent of its total workforce, as the Company strives to better align its operations and strategic focus with the current industry environment.

"The telecom equipment market has changed dramatically in the last year and we have to adjust to those changes if we are to maintain our leadership position in the industry," said Gary Smith, CIENA`s president and CEO. "CIENA`s future success depends on our ability to adapt the way we think and the way we run our business in this dynamic environment."

CIENA estimates that the actions taken today will generate between $145 to $155 million in annualized cost savings, including approximately $85 to $90 million at the operating expense level, prior to restructuring-related charges. CIENA expects that the majority of the cost savings will be in place by its fiscal third quarter, 2002. Affected employees will be paid through May 24, 2002 and will be eligible for additional severance packages. They also will receive outplacement assistance and training.

The Company expects to record a restructuring charge of between $125 to $135 million in its second fiscal quarter associated with the workforce reduction, lease terminations, non-cancelable lease costs and the write-down of certain property, equipment and leasehold improvements. In addition, in its fiscal second quarter, CIENA also expects to record a charge of approximately $200 to $225 million, primarily related to excess inventory associated with its long-haul transport products and purchase commitments with suppliers.

"CIENA pioneered the WDM revolution and we`re leading the optical switching revolution. Our goal is to continue to reshape the telecom industry, creating more powerful, more economically compelling network solutions for our customers," continued Smith. "Consequently, we remain committed to investing in key areas of our business as this is not the time to cut back on the efforts that are likely to propel CIENA to a stronger leadership position when our carrier customers resume more normal spending patterns. However, as demonstrated by today`s actions, we are carefully prioritizing our spending with an emphasis on opportunity and return on investment."

"The actions we`ve taken today will help facilitate CIENA`s return to profitability," concluded Smith. "CIENA`s grown up in turbulent times and agility has been a key competitive advantage - one that is even more valuable in today`s volatile environment. We`re currently playing from a market-leading, technology-leading position and that position enables us to play to win, not just survive. We will continue to work to leverage our competitive position to the long-term benefit of our customers, our shareholders and our employees."

      IDC Names CIENA Top Worldwide DWDM Player;
CIENA Identified for Cutting Carriers` Capital Expenses; Grew Its Global Long-Haul DWDM Market Share from Ten to 23 percent in 2001

      TUESDAY, APRIL 30, 2002 9:02 AM - BusinessWire

LINTHICUM, Md., Apr 30, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
IDC, a leading telecommunications market analyst firm, today released findings of its annual optical networking market share survey, in which it revealed that CIENA(R) Corporation (CIEN) , a global provider of intelligent optical networking systems and software, has achieved the global leadership position for long-haul dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) system deployment.
The results are as of the end of calendar year 2001.

"In a very challenging environment, CIENA significantly increased its long-haul DWDM revenue and earned top market share in 2001," said Sterling Perrin, Senior Research Analyst with IDC.
"Moving forward, IDC believes that DWDM products, such as CIENA`s, that address carriers` capacity requirements, lower their capital costs and reduce their operating costs, will continue to be well-received in the market."

IDC`s methodology for the survey consisted of in-depth, structured interviews that took place over a three-month period with dozens of service providers and vendors.
To supplement that primary research, IDC utilized a host of secondary sources, including SEC financial filings, news releases and articles published in trade and business journals, to reach its conclusions.

CIENA, with its flagship CoreStream(TM) long-haul DWDM product, also gained the lead in North American DWDM share with 30 percent of the market.

CIENA has been widely credited with pioneering the commercialization of DWDM technology with the launch of its MultiWave(R) 1600 in 1996.
At the time, CIENA`s application of DWDM produced an optical networking system that revolutionized the costs for building the transport side of a telecom network.
Since then, as a result of CIENA`s continued technology advances and the advent of specific feature sets for applications such as ultra-long haul optical transport, CIENA estimates that it has dramatically reduced capital costs (CapEx) associated with optical transport, in some cases by more than 90 percent.
CIENA is now applying that same strategy of reducing carriers` capital and operational costs to the switching and metro markets.

Due in large part to that cost-cutting focus, CIENA also is the optical switching industry leader, with as much as 60 percent market share, according to most analyst firms.
CoreDirector(TM), the company`s core optical switch, has now been shipped to 30 carriers for their networks.

"We have never wavered from our philosophy of developing optical networking solutions that significantly change carrier network economics," said Steve Alexander, senior vice president and chief technology officer for CIENA Corp.
"It`s all about applying technology to drive down costs for our customers.
Our belief is that CIENA`s LightWorks(TM) solution provides carriers with the most cost-effective network architecture and highest level of automation available today."

Ciena CEO Says Co Built For Survival In Down Market

      4 Jun 2002, 4:08pm ET

ATLANTA -(Dow Jones)- Something in his gut keeps Ciena Corp. (CIEN) Chief Executive Gary Smith from calling a bottom to the current desert-like spending environment for telecommunications equipment.

"When I look at some of the revenues, my own personal view is (current carrier spending) is below maintenance levels," Smith said Tuesday in an interview at the annual SUPERCOMM telecommunications technology show here.
I can say that intellectually, but I would have put our normal level or revenues higher than they have been, as well."

Smith is loath to say that revenue will soon stabilize at the Linthicum, Md., fiber optic communications equipment maker because it "is a very unpredictable market," he said.

Late last month, Ciena reported fiscal second-quarter revenue of $87 million, lower than Wall Street expected, and warned that third-quarter sales would be flat or lower. On a pro forma basis, which excludes one-time events and charges, the company lost 19 cents a share.
The losses aren`t expected to end anytime soon.

Ciena, like its peers, has seen sales plummet as large carriers clamped down on spending while startups have also drastically scaled back spending or fallen into bankruptcy.
The result is the remaining equipment makers are all targeting the large incumbents.

"I think we`re going through a huge correction," Smith said.

Unfortunately, investors have found no refuge.
Ciena`s stock, once one of the gold standards in the sector, recently traded at $5.38, down from a 52-week high of $61.95 set last June.

The company is seen as the pure-play in next-generation optical systems, a segment of the equipment industry hit particularly hard because of a dropoff in spending on long-haul transport systems.

Most industry observers, including Smith, believe the equipment sector will be littered with the dead before the environment improves.

He said Ciena is one of the only next-generation equipment makers to have attained the critical mass to survive a lengthy spending downturn.
The company added four new customers in the fourth quarter, bringing its total customer count up to 66.

"We`re the only one with the horsepower to survive," Smith said.
"There`s a real opportunity here for Ciena providing that we execute."

"We are not assuming the industry will come back at a burning pace," Smith said.
"What is critical for us is to get into the networks of large carriers, who have long-term relationships (with older equipment makers)."

Ciena has recently done just that, announcing a contract with France`s second-largest carrier.
In addition, the company has another yet unnamed large incumbent carrier switching customer, which Smith referenced in the company`s second-quarter conference call.

Smith said investors looking for valid stories should couple those wins with penetration of the company`s high-profile optical switch CoreDirector into AT&T Corp.`s (T) network.

Analysts, however, still note that the company`s quarterly revenue is a long way from its breakeven point.

"Ciena appears well positioned to win next-generation business when (capital spending) resumes, but a $250 million a quarter sales breakeven seems high," CIBC World Markets analyst Rick Schafer said in a note late last month.
"We expect shares may drift lower during the usual summer doldrums."

Meanwhile, Smith said the company`s acquisition of ONI Systems Corp. (ONIS) further enhances its leadership role as the leading next-generation equipment maker.

And he expects further industry consolidation to take place, both in the carrier and equipment space.

"I think you`ll see signs of carriers adopting new technology and industry consolidation in 2003," Smith said. "There will be a much greater focus on the economics (of the networks)."

Ciena cautions of sharp sales shortfall

      By Jeffry Bartash, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 4:55 PM ET June 18, 2002

LINTHICUM, Md. (CBS.MW) -- Ciena on Tuesday cautioned that third-quarter sales could fall sharply from the previous quarter, but the optical equipment maker also said it`s making faster progress in cutting costs.

In the quarter ending July 31, Ciena said sales could "be down meaningfully" from the second quarter level of $87.1 million, even if revenue from Oni Systems is included.

Oni, which Ciena is acquiring, posted revenue of $21 billion in its latest quarter. The merger is slated to close at weekend.

Previously, Ciena (CIEN: news, chart, profile) had said that revenue would be "flat to down" in the third quarter.

Ciena said final sales would depend on the timing of customer purchases whether they would abide by previous orders for new optical-networking equipment.

"In this environment our business remains volatile and unpredictable, and our fiscal third quarter revenues will depend heavily on the timing of customer orders and acceptance of products for which we already have orders," Chief Executive Gary Smith said.

To offset falling sales, Ciena has moved to further reduce costs. The combined entity plans to cut 225 workers, with 110 more expected to leave once the two companies are fully integrated.

As a result, the combined company expects to save in excess of $65 million annually. Previously, Ciena estimate the combination would save $55 million to $65 million annually.

On Tuesday, shares of Ciena fell 40 cents, or 8.3 percent, to $4.40. Oni (ONIS: news, chart, profile) dropped 34 cents, or 10 percent, to $3.09. Oni stock will stop trading at the end of Friday.

Ciena says exposure to WorldCom "insignificant"

      WEDNESDAY, JUNE 26, 2002 2:14 PM - Reuters U.S. Company News

CHICAGO, June 26 (Reuters) - Telecommunications equipment maker Ciena Corp. (CIEN) said Wednesday that its exposure to WolrdCom Inc. was "insignificant."

A spokesman for the Linthicum, Maryland-based company said the exposure was less than $1 million.

WorldCom (WCOM) (MCIT) , the No. 2 U.S. long-distance phone and data services company, said late Tuesday it had fired its chief financial officer after discovering improper accounting for almost $4 billion in expenses.

As a result, the Clinton, Mississippi-based company said it would restate results for 2001 and the first quarter of 2002.

      Barron`s: Telecom, optical stock plays

      By CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 4:40 PM ET July 6, 2002

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- The collapse of the telecommunications and optical equipment sectors may present a number of opportunities for shareholders, according to two articles published in this week`s edition of Barron`s.

      MAN HÖRE !!!

Ross Margolies, manager of the Salomon Brothers Capital fund, told Barron`s the shares of Lucent Technologies, Ciena and Comverse Technology could double or triple in value by late 2003.
"These stocks are trading as if people aren`t going to use their phones anymore," he was quoted as saying.

Lucent (LU) is down 76 percent in 2002, closing at $1.82 Friday.
The telecom equipment maker said June 13 that third-quarter sales will decline up to 15 percent from second-quarter levels, due to the communications industry`s continuing slump -- and this was before long-distance carrier WorldCom sent shockwaves through the corporate world with its news that $3.8 billion in operating costs had been improperly booked as capital expenditures.
Investors already rocked by accounting scandals at Enron and Adelphia Communications punished the telecom sector and the broader markets.

But Margolies called Lucent a "survivor," noting that it has "best customer base, good technology and not a lot of leverage," Barron`s said.

      UND DANN NOCH DAS !!!

The fund manager said he sees networking equipment maker Ciena (CIEN) as a possible takeover target for Cisco Systems (CSCO).
He also likes the company`s "strong technology" and the fact that it continues to spend significantly on research and development.

Margolies says Comverse (CMVT) has a solid balance sheet, and though it is losing money, its cash burn rate is modest.
In a separate article, Barron`s quotes Sanford Bernstein analyst Zhiping Zhao as recommending two optical networking stocks: JDS Uniphase and Agere Systems.

JDS Uniphase (JDSU), which closed at $2.90 Friday, could go to $10, Zhao told the newspaper, because many of WorldCom`s customers will take their telecom services needs to AT&T. As AT&T`s network becomes increasingly congested, Zhao said, Ma Bell will seek to boost the network`s capacity by buying optical amplifiers -- and that will mean orders for JDS Uniphase.

Zhao foresees a nearly breakeven year for JDS Uniphase in fiscal 2003, and a profit of $350 million in fiscal 2005.

Agere (AGRA) will also benefit from optical amplifier orders, in Zhao`s view.
She told Barron`s she expects the company to break even in fiscal 2003, then post a profit of $550 million in fiscal `05.

      CIENA Opens China Representative Office in Beijing;
Move is next step in Company`s ongoing strategic focus on mainland China :D

      WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 04, 2002 8:04 AM - BusinessWire

HONG KONG, Dec 4, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- CIENA(R) Corporation (CIEN) , a leading provider of intelligent optical networking systems and software, today announced the opening of its mainland China representative office in Beijing.
Mike Holmes, vice president and general manager, China, will head the office, which is presently staffed with sales, systems engineers and program management employees.

"The opening of a Beijing representative office is a significant step on our strategic roadmap in mainland China," said Gary Smith, CIENA`s president and chief executive officer.
"Today, mainland China shows tremendous potential in terms of uptake of next-generation optical networking infrastructure.
We recognize the need for the highest level of flexibility and responsiveness in meeting the demands of our customers in China, and are confident that having a mainland operation will provide the ground level support we need to best respond to emerging opportunities."

The announcement comes two years after the launch of the Company`s Asia Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong.
Since then, CIENA has developed a joint venture with CEC-IDN in Beijing.
The two companies will continue to work together on the mainland market both to serve existing clients and to grow the business.
CIENA and CEC-IDN also jointly launched a research and development center in Shanghai earlier this year.
In addition to the Beijing office, CIENA currently has Asian offices in Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea and Japan.

Holmes is a twelve-year veteran of the telecommunications and data networking industry.
Prior to joining CIENA and taking up this post, he was with ONI Systems, responsible for network rollout for Qwest across Europe and Asia.
He has also worked with major telecommunications equipment providers such as 3Com and Cisco Systems.

"I am delighted to lead CIENA`s representative office in China," said Holmes.
"Our primary focus is to respond to the unique needs of the mainland market in the best possible manner, with a speedy response time and high flexibility.
We are confident that our offices here will allow us to have a finger on the pulse of the mainland China market, and work even better with our partner, CEC-IDN."

The opening of the Beijing representative office is a further example of CIENA`s commitment to Asia, and the Company`s focus on ongoing strategic investment in its business.
"We`ve seen solid progress since the launch of our Asia Pacific headquarters," said Smith.
"As we continue to navigate through this difficult period, we consider it critical to our future to continue to invest in Asia, and in our business overall."

      @ Preiselbeere

UPDATE 1-Networking stocks up on positive Foundry outlook
      THURSDAY, JANUARY 09, 2003 4:25 PM
      Reuters U.S. Company News

      By Ben Klayman

CHICAGO, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Positive news on two small networking equipment makers this week drove up the entire sector on Thursday as investors bet that the industry slowdown was bottoming out, analysts and investors said.

The American Stock Exchange Network index (NWX) closed up 5.2 percent thanks to good news on Foundry Networks Inc. (FDRY) and Extreme Networks Inc. (EXTR) , which cited growing demand by corporate customers, also called the enterprise sector.

"There`s at least some sense that there`s a bottom," said Ken Smith, portfolio manager with asset management firm Munder Capital Management.

Nevertheless, Smith still worries that the March quarter will be weak, as it historically is.

Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Paul Sagawa said the good news was driving the strong stock performance, but that could just as easily be wiped out by bad news on Friday.

"We`ve been on this roller coaster for the last couple of months," he said. "People can`t decide.
The economic news of the day has tended to whip us around. Today`s Foundry. Tomorrow it will be something else."

Foundry closed up 15.7 percent and Extreme finished up 8.3 percent on Nasdaq. Other networking stocks that rose included Juniper Networks Inc. (JNPR) , up 12 percent on Nasdaq; Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) , up 8.5 percent on the New York Stock Exchange; Tellabs Inc. (TLAB) , up 5.3 percent on Nasdaq; Ciena Corp. (CIEN) , up 5.4 percent on Nasdaq; and Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) , up 3.5 percent on Nasdaq.

Foundry after the close of trading on Wednesday said it expected to top fourth-quarter sales forecasts thanks to strong enterprise sales of its switches and routers. The day before, analysts said Extreme`s enterprise business rose 2 percent and the overall decline in sales was not as weak as feared.

Prudential Securities analyst Inder Singh said it was too early to call an end to the downturn.

"The acid test will be Cisco because it`s reporting in three weeks," he said.
"That will show whether the momentum is extending into the first quarter.
At the very minimum, it would suggest a bottoming-out process."

William Gorman, an analyst with investment advisor PNC Advisors, was more skeptical.

"A lot of it is probably just some short-term momentum buying," he said.
"I just don`t see a lot of cause for huge increases in earnings estimates for a lot of these companies."

...From his perch in Seattle, Randy Williams-Gurian, editor of Tech Stock Insights, sees value in some of the vanguards of the old new economy: Ciena (nasdaq: CIEN - news - people ) and Sun Microsystems (nasdaq: SUNW - news - people ).
Both companies are sitting on hoards of cash and, says Gurian, are leaders in their respective fields--albeit suffering from a beaten-up customer base. ...

      Ciena kann Erwartungen erfüllen? Analyst

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ciena forecasts higher sales this quarter
      By Jonathan Moules FT.com,
      19:10 GMT Feb 20, 2003

Ciena, the lossmaking networking equipment maker, on Thursday said it expected to do as well or slightly better in the current quarter compared to the previous period as it struggles to win new business in a tough market for telecommunications spending.

The Maryland-based company, which manufactures intelligent optical networking systems, achieved a 14 per cent sequential improvement for its first-quarter revenues to $70.5m. But this was 56 down from the $162m reported a year earlier and well below the company`s breakeven target of $175m-$220m.

Ciena`s strategy of spending through the industry downturn has set it apart from its rivals, who have focused on cost cutting to counter the shrinking demand for telecoms kit.

Gary Smith, Ciena`s president and CEO, said a major opportunity lay in the large encumbent telecoms carriers where Ciena has so far been unable to gain significant market share. "A lot of the traditional legacy partners of the big carriers aren`t able to invest in the way we are," he said.

Ciena`s net loss for the quarter was $107m, or 25 cents per share, compared with $70.6m, or 22 cents per share, a year earlier. Excluding certain items, such as a loss from paying off debt, the net loss was 11 cents per share. This was better than the company`s forecast of 13-15 cents per share, made at its fourth-quarter results call in December.

The company completed a tender offer, using $139.2m in cash to repurchase $154.7m in notes. This would save about $15.5m in future principal payments, the company said.

Ciena ended the first quarter with $1.9bn in cash after spending $43m of its cash reserves during the period. This was lower than previously expected due to an early receipt of a $17m tax refund.

The markets cheered Ciena`s sequential revenues improvement, lifting the stock 2 per cent to $5.67 during afternoon trade in New York on Thursday.

      MERRILL LYNCH INVESTMENT

      Ciena "sell" Datum: 10.04.2003

UPDATE 2-Ciena to supply equipment to BT Group
      THURSDAY, MAY 01, 2003 4:08 PM
      - Reuters U.S. Company News

      CHICAGO, May 1 (Reuters)
      - Telecommunications equipment maker Ciena Corp. (CIEN) on Thursday said it will supply British telephone company BT Group Plc <BT.L> with optical transport and switching gear as part of a three-year contract that could be worth up to $200 million a year. :kiss

Terms of the deal, which also includes software, were not disclosed.

Analysts had expected the deal, but the timing had been unknown. SG Cowen said the deal could be worth up to $200 million, while J.P. Morgan analyst Ehud Gelblum believes it could be worth that much a year by the end of the contract.

Initial deployments are expected by the end of Ciena`s 2003 fiscal year, which ends in October.

Ciena`s shares closed up 27 cents, or 5.5 percent, at $5.15 in trading on the Nasdaq on Thursday.

      Ciena

Networking firm Ciena is also experiencing above normal activity on the message boards.
After beginning today`s session in negative territory, CIEN mounted a quick recovery and is currently higher by 5.96 percent.
As the chart below illustrates, today`s move puts the stock back up at potential resistance at the site of its overhead 10-day moving average.

The catalyst for today`s move is undoubtedly positioning ahead of the firm`s fiscal 2003 earnings report, which is slated to be released tomorrow before the open.

Turning our attention to options activity, traders are gravitating toward CIEN`s June 5.00 call strike with volume of 1,341 contracts crossing the tape on open interest of 7,810 contracts.
