This week the St. Louis Rams (12-2) begin a two-game homestand to end the regular season when they play host to the Indianapolis Colts (5-9) Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001. Kickoff at the Dome at America`s Center (66,000 capacity) is scheduled for 12:02 p.m. With a win, the Rams clinch the NFC Western Division title. With a win and a loss by Chicago (at Detroit), the Rams clinch homefield advantage throughout the NFC Playoffs. The Rams are two-thirds through a key six-game, season-ending schedule that features five games against the NFC West. The Rams have won at Atlanta (35-6), vs. San Francisco (27-14), at New Orleans (34-21), and at Carolina (38-32). Following Sunday`s game vs. Indianapolis (Dec. 30), the Rams end with a NFC Western Division game vs. Atlanta (Jan. 6).

After the Rams failed to win the NFC Championship game it looks like "the greatest show on Earth" is history.

The surprising loss to the Green Bay Packers left a banged up team swimming in the tears of tens of thousands of Fans.

The always overconfident Coach Mike Martz coudn´t find any words for the tough loss to the high flying Packers led by Ahman Green and of course Brett Favre.

We have to regroup now and must get over this to become Superbowlchampions next year.

However at this moment it doesn´t look like that.

Due to Salary Cap reasons the Rams will either lose Faulk or Warner. Bruce, Timmermann and Holt might also be gone.

So another aera comes to an end highlited by the 1999 Championship.

Bucs` "D" stops Ravens in 22-10 victory

TAMPA, Fla. (Dec. 29, 2001) -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers virtually assured themselves a playoff berth with a victory that shows how dangerous they could be in the postseason.

The Bucs beat the Baltimore Ravens 22-10 Saturday night, using the same formula -- stifling defense and opportunistic offense -- that carried the defending Super Bowl champions to last year`s title.

The victory moved Tampa Bay (9-6) to the brink of its fourth playoff berth in five years. The Bucs, who have won five of six after a 4-5 start, will clinch the final NFC wild-card spot if Atlanta loses or ties at Miami on Sunday.

Even if Atlanta wins its last two games, the Falcons would have to have Tampa Bay lose its finale against Philadelphia and also make up a 79-point tiebreaker differential.

Warren Sapp doesn`t expect that to happen.

"This team is in the playoffs and we expect to do some damage because every team up there, we can play with," the All-Pro defensive tackle said. "Our backs were against the wall and we came out and performed like playoff teams do in December."

For the Ravens (9-6), it was a disappointing return to the site of their dominating Super Bowl victory.

Elvis Grbac threw two interceptions and was sacked five times, while Tampa Bay set up one of Doug Brien`s three first-half field goals with a blocked punt.

Baltimore could have grabbed one of the AFC wild-card berths with a victory, but will still clinch this weekend if Seattle loses or ties at San Diego.

"As long as we still have a shot at the playoffs, we move on to the next game," Ravens coach Brian Billick said. "That, or you crawl into a fetal position and call for your mother and all those other things that you want to do. But you don`t give in to that impulse.

"We still have an important game to play to get us in the playoffs. Then the whole world reopens to you. That`s what we have to focus on."

Brad Johnson`s 1-yard sneak for Tampa Bay`s first touchdown put the Bucs up 16-7 late in the second quarter. It proved to be the difference. Mike Alstott put the game out of reach with less than two minutes left.

Johnson only completed 13 of 29 passes for 90 yards, however Tampa Bay didn`t allow a sack or commit a turnover for the second straight week and controlled field position with a solid kicking game.

Grbac, who completed 21 of 37 passes for 205 yards, threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Travis Taylor to give Baltimore a 7-3 lead in the second quarter. Matt Stover`s 24-yard field goal trimmed a nine-point halftime deficit to 16-10 with 13:26 remaining in the game.

Baltimore has come from behind in the fourth quarter to win four games this season, however Grbac`s hopes of leading another comeback ended when the Ravens were stopped on downs at their own 32 with just less than two minutes to go.

Two plays later, Alstott scored on a 32-yard run to finish with 80 yards on 14 carries. Warrick Dunn gained 47 on 13 attempts as the Bucs ran for 124 yards.

With Tony Siragusa missing from the middle of the defensive line last week, Cincinnati`s Corey Dillon ran for 127 yards to snap the Ravens` streak of not allowing a 100-yard rushing performance at 50 games.

Despite being listed on the injury report as questionable, Siragusa started and Tampa Bay, next-to-last in the league in rushing, had little success on the ground until late in the game.

The Bucs led 16-7 at the half, but wasted numerous opportunities to push the Ravens into a deeper hole.

Tampa Bay began five possessions in Baltimore territory, yet was only able to convert the field position into two field goals and the touchdown that Brooks set up with his interception and 53-yard return to the Ravens 1.

Brien, meanwhile, was a reliable stand-in for Martin Gramatica, who strained his right hamstring last week. Brien made field goals of 42, 38 and 24 yards in the first half, the latter putting the Bucs ahead for good after Todd Yoder blocked Kyle Richardson`s punt and Rabih Abdullah scooped up the loose ball and stumbled ahead to the Baltimore 23.

"It`s a tough loss," Billick said. "In a playoff atmosphere, you can`t make mistakes like that."

The Ravens vowed to bounce back.

"You go out and play the next week. There`s no magic potion," Siragusa said. "You`ve just got to go out and make your own breaks."

GAME NOTES

The Bucs also beat defending Super Bowl champions at home the past two seasons, defeating Denver in 1999 and St. Louis last season.
Ronde Barber had one of Tampa Bay`s two interceptions, giving him a franchise-record 10 this season,
Terry Allen rushed for 74 yards on 20 carries for the Ravens.

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Brett Favre is not happy with the Green Bay Packers just making the playoffs.

On Sunday, the NFL`s most durable quarterback will be looking for more as the Packers battle the NFC Central rival Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau Field.

In Packer-like weather, Green Bay clinched a return to the playoffs last Sunday with a 30-7 victory over Cleveland Browns.

Improving to 28-0 at home when the gametime temperature is 34 degrees or below, Favre passed for three touchdowns amid steady snow. It was Favre`s 155th straight start, the longest active streak in the NFL.

But Favre, who has the Packers back in the playoffs for the first time since the 1998 season, wants more out of his team.

"It is a big deal and everyone was excited in the locker room," he said. "I don`t want to sound like I`m not excited, but we have two games left. Just getting in the playoffs to me is just not enough."

The Packers still have hopes of winning the division title, trailing the Chicago Bears by just one game. Green Bay, which holds the tiebreaker over the Bears based on a series sweep, closes its season next Sunday at the New York Giants.

Green Bay also is still fighting for a home playoff game, trailing San Francisco by one game for the NFC`s first wild card spot.

With starting quarterback Daunte Culpepper out for the season, the Vikings watched backup Todd Bouman go down with a thumb injury early in the first quarter of last Sunday`s 33-3 loss to Jacksonville.

Spergon Wynn replaced Bouman and went 24 of 39 for 218 yards and one interception. It is uncertain if Bouman will return for this contest.

Minnesota, which has lost consecutive games and four of five, has been a disaster away from the Metrodome this season, dropping all six of its games. The Vikings have lost nine straight away from home, dating to a victory at Dallas last Thanksgiving.

Out of the playoffs for just the second time in Dennis Green`s 10 seasons as coach, the Vikings played their best game of the season on October 21 against Green Bay.

Sparked by a defense that limited Favre to 169 yards passing and two interceptions, the Vikings rolled to a 35-13 rout in that contest. Doug Chapman had 90 yards rushing and Culpepper 71 to lead the offense.

Star wide receiver Randy Moss added eight catches for 73 yards. In seven career games against Green Bay, Moss has 38 receptions for 826 yards and seven touchdowns.

Green Bay leads the series, 40-39-1.

Warum Hat Seattle noch eine Chance sich zu qualifizieren und und Denver nicht obwohl sie beide die gleiche Win/loose statistik haben. Und gibt es eine Regelung wie sich die Play off Paarungen zusammensetzen pder wird da gelost. Danke im voraus

Seattle hat mehr Spiele gegen Gegner aus der AFC gewonnen als Jets oder Ravens. Die Broncos nicht. Das ist der Tiebreaker, daher können die Seahawks bei Anzahl gleicher Siege doch noch in die Playoffs kommen.
