Lucent Technologies today announced that it has been awarded a contract to supply third-generation (3G) CDMA2000(TM) technology to KTF, a leading Korean wireless service provider with over ten million subscribers. Under the contract, Lucent will upgrade KTF``s 2G network in the Kyungsang province to CDMA2000 1X, doubling voice capacity and enabling high-speed data services such as wireless Internet access and video streaming at speeds of up to 153 kilobits per second (kbps).

Lucent will provide KTF with a cost-effective and smooth migration to 3G voice and data services by simply adding channel cards and making software upgrades to hundreds of existing Lucent-supplied base stations in the Kyungsang province.

"By working with Lucent, we are confident we will be able to offer our customers the most advanced wireless services, while at the same time preserving our investment in our existing network equipment," said Chung-Kun Lee, senior vice president & CTO of KTF. "We look forward to working with Lucent to further develop our reliable and flexible high-speed 3G data services."

"Korea is one of the world``s leading markets for the introduction of 3G technology and services and we are excited by the opportunity to showcase our best-in-class 3G solutions," said John Yang, president and CEO of Lucent Technologies Korea. "We are pleased to enhance KTF``s network smoothly and cost-effectively with 3G technology and help them introduce advanced new services to their subscribers."

CDMA2000 is an advanced and efficient wireless technology being introduced worldwide and an international 3G standard established by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). CDMA2000 cost-effectively evolves a multitude of network technologies. Lucent is the worldwide leader in spread-spectrum CDMA networks, having deployed more than 60,000 CDMA base stations in commercial networks worldwide.

      T.
