Data Return Announces 98% Sequential Increase in Third Quarter 2000 Revenue

Revenue Increases 630% Year Over Year

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 1, 2000

Data Return Corporation (Nasdaq: DRTN - news) today reported results for the third fiscal quarter and nine months ended December 31, 1999.

Total revenue for the third fiscal quarter of 2000 was $3.4 million, a 98% sequential increase from $1.7 million in the second quarter, and a 630% increase over $467,500 for the third quarter of fiscal 1999.

``The explosive rate at which the market is adopting the outsourcing of complex hosting solutions for the Microsoft platform resulted in tremendous sequential revenue growth for the quarter,`` said Sunny C. Vanderbeck, chairman and chief executive officer. ``We believe fully managed hosting services provide substantially greater value for customers than traditional colocation-based hosting services. We expect the enormous adoption of E-business will continue to accelerate the demand for fully managed hosting services. Therefore, we believe Data Return is extremely well positioned to deliver the hosting service model of choice for both dot.com and enterprise customers. Data Return`s position and performance in the hosting market resulted in 173 new clients during this quarter, expanding our base to 952 clients as of December.``

Revenue from new clients accounted for more than 34% of total sequential revenue growth. New Data Return clients added during the third quarter include Tenet Health Systems, Gamebay.com, 3Com and others. Existing customers who expanded their service relationships with the Company include Dash.com, PlanetOutdoors, Pier 1 Imports, the U.S. Council of Better Business Bureaus, Inc. and Trane Corporation.

Third quarter EBITDA was negative $3.0 million, or $0.09 per share, as compared to negative $184,000, or $0.01 per share, in the prior year period. The Company reported a net loss of $4.0 million, or $0.12 per diluted share in the quarter ended December 31, 1999, compared to a loss of $309,000, or $0.02 per diluted share, reported in the third fiscal quarter of 1999.

For the nine months ended December 31, 1999, total revenue was $6.4 million, an increase of 572% over $1.1 million for the same period last year. The net loss for the nine-month period was $6.6 million, or a $0.24 loss per diluted share.
