WorldCom agrees to meet regularly with big clients
2002-11-25 18:00:09 EST
WASHINGTON, Nov 25 (Reuters) - WorldCom Inc. said on Monday it has agreed to meet regularly to address issues raised by its biggest customers who had wanted a formal panel to represent their interests while the company attempts to emerge from bankruptcy.
Seventeen companies, including DaimlerChrysler AG and Procter & Gamble Co. , that buy $300 million in services annually from WorldCom had asked a New York bankruptcy court for a role in the bankruptcy proceedings to ensure continuity of services, among other things.
The telecommunications and Internet data services provider agreed to hold the meetings so that the "needs of large customers can be appropriately taken into account," said Hank Levine, a lawyer at Levine, Blaszak, Block & Boothby LLP who represents the ad hoc group of large customers.
The two issues atop the list of concerns were ensuring that the large customers can receive as broad an array of services from WorldCom as they do now, and any changes made to the procedures for migrating to another provider if a contract is ended early, Levine said.
WorldCom, one of the largest carriers of Internet traffic in the world and the No. 2 U.S. long-distance company, filed for the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history in July after revealing that $3.85 billion in expenses were improperly booked.
The company has since admitted that its accounting problems may stretch beyond $9 billion. The concerns raised by WorldCom`s big customers came soon after the telecommunications giant last month suffered a widespread outage on its network that routes Internet traffic.
"We are pleased to have reached an arrangement with the Ad Hoc Committee that establishes a constructive forum for the discussion and resolution of any customer issues," said WorldCom spokeswoman Claire Hassett.
The U.S. trustee overseeing the WorldCom bankruptcy had previously declined to appoint a committee since customers EDS Corp. and AOL Time Warner Inc. were already on the creditors committee.
The customers withdrew their proposal to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York for the creation of a panel that would have provided its input as WorldCom and creditors reorganize and plan for account support, services offered and service levels, according to a filing last month with the court.
The committee would also have focused on ensuring that the reorganization plan would preserve the ability of large companies to get all the services they need from one entity and if WorldCom is sold, that the buyer is one with which large customers are willing and able to do business.
