Culturecom launches embedded computing architecture, sparking new era in Chinese computing, home-appliances

February 9, 2004, Hong Kong -- Culturecom Holdings Limited (“Culturecom”, SEHK code: 343) today announced the launch of its “Embedded V-Dragon Midori Linux Industrial Standard”, a new architecture for embedded general systems and a new IT industrial standard.

The new standard could revolutionize Chinese computing and carry wide implications for China’s huge home-appliance sector.

Culturecom Chairman Frank W.T. Cheung unveiled the development at a company-organized Shenzhen conference entitled “A New Era of Chinese Computing Industry: The Creation of China’s Self-developed IT Standard”. He said the new standard would facilitate the development of a new national industry for embedded functional computing devices.

The new architecture combines three leading embedded computing technologies: Culturecom’s embedded Chinese generating technology for CPUs; the Midori Linux embedded operating system; and IBM’s PowerPC embedded-microprocessor technology.

IBM has provided full technical support to the development of the new standard, ensuring world-class quality. Some main components and devices manufactured under this new standard will be much cheaper than those made under the Wintel (Windows and Intel) x86 standard, with cost savings expected to be approximately 70 percent.

The PRC Government has formulated a policy on developing “intelligent home appliances”, confronting many enterprises with a transitional period. Many are likely to adopt the new architecture announced today, a milestone for embedded computing technology, as they seek to develop “intelligent” systems for home devices.

Culturecom’s efforts have gained the support of such major companies as Datang Telecom Technology, the General Plan Multimedia Technology Group, Taiwan’s Great Tone Technology Limited and the US-based Hughes Network Systems. The companies variously plan to use Culturecom’s V-Dragon motherboards to develop such products as tax POS terminals, network computers, Internet-enabled DVDs and set-top boxes. Culturecom anticipates initial motherboard orders topping 1 million.

The adoption of the new IT standard by China’s home-appliance industry is likely to generate significant IT business and spur development of a whole new sector in the computing industry.

Regional governments such as the Guangdong’s Yunan government plan to use the new standard to establish local IT infrastructures, and hope to turn Yunan into a manufacturing and assembly base for this emerging industry.

Many IT experts think China’s huge home-appliance industry will rapidly adopt embedded computing technology, turning traditional home appliances into “intelligent” machines. The new embedded general system is likely to demonstrate far greater potential than PC technology.

Developed by Culturecom’s Vice Chairman Mr Chu Bong Foo, the embedded character generating technology is able to generate Chinese characters directly from a CPU, eliminating external processing systems and massive database storage. As such, it enables efficient integration of Chinese-language computing into CPU chips, and makes possible the creation of “intelligent appliance” (IA) products, especially for portable equipment, with highly efficient Chinese processing.

Development of the new architecture began in 2002 when Culturecom joined IBM to embed Chinese-character generating technology in the architecture of the PowerPC microprocessor. In March 2003, the two companies launched the “V-Dragon CPU”, the world’s first Chinese-embedded CPU for Linux, as the core building block for an embedded general system.

In July 2003, Culturecom announced acquisition of control and management rights to Midori Linux from the US Transmeta Corporation, the foremost developer of software-based microprocessors.

Midori Linux was created by Linus Trovalds as a highly efficient, tiny embedded Linux operating system for IA devices. The open-source system can be modified and extended to accommodate various embedded products, facilitating the development of lightweight intelligent home appliances with computerized and IT functions.

Mr. Cheung, Culturecom Chairman, said, “China is the world’s largest manufacturing base for home-appliance products. It enjoys low-cost resources and is itself a fast-growing market for them.”

He said China would take its place alongside the USA and Europe as world leaders in IT standards. While the US is paramount in Internet communications and PC standards and Europe leads wireless communications, China, he said, would set the global pace in home-appliance computing.

“We believe that this new IT industrial standard could finally break through Wintel’s limitations, enabling development of good-quality, user-friendly computing devices that will be both accessible and affordable in China’s mass market, and lead to an era in which computing can be accessed at all places and all times,” Mr Cheung said.
