wahnsinn

Placer Dome in Talks With Explorers to Mine Mongolian Gold.
Sept. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Placer Dome Inc., the world`s fifth- biggest gold producer, said it is in talks with companies
looking for gold in Mongolia and is keen to invest in the country.
``We like Mongolia for investment and all we need is the right opportunity to trigger that,``
Mike Johnston, Placer`s Brisbane-based Asia-Pacific exploration manager said. ``We`ve been talking to a few explorers,`` he said in an interview at the Discover Mongolia 2004 mining conference in Ulan Bator.
Johnston declined to say whether Vancouver-based Placer was close to investing in a Mongolian project.
Mongolia, almost three times the size of France and landlocked between Russia and China, now has the largest mine drilling program of any country in the world, said the Mineral Resources Authority of Mongolia. A surge in demand in China for copper, gold and other minerals is boosting prices of the metals along with exploration.
``We monitor and encourage the junior companies and if they find something, our preferred entry is to joint venture in with them,`` Johnston said. ``There have been some good results in Mongolia in the past 12 months, but maybe not as good as many people hoped, which is why we are not rushing in.``
Placer plans to spend $75 million globally looking for gold this year, the Vancouver-based company said on its Web site.
Copper prices have risen 53 percent in the last 12 months on the London Metal Exchange to $2,769 a ton as China`s demand boomed for products that use the metal, such as cars, houses and household appliances. Gold futures in New York have risen 8.4 percent to $407 an ounce during the same period.

Brazil`s Vale Joins AngloGold in Mongolia Drilling (Update1)
Sept. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Cia. Vale do Rio Doce,
------->>> the world`s biggest iron-ore producer,
began drilling this month for copper and gold in Mongolia, joining AngloGold Ashanti Ltd., Barrick Gold Corp. and others in the search for minerals to supply China`s $18- billion a year market for metals.
``Mongolia has a lot of mineral resource potential,``
Jose Lancaster Oliveira, Vale`s Director of Exploration and Project Development, said in Mongolia`s capital Ulan Bator at the official opening of its office. ``We`ve developed many mining techniques in the Amazon we`ll be able to use in Mongolia.``
Mongolia, almost three times the size of France and landlocked between Russia and China, now has the largest mine drilling program of any country in the world, said the Mineral Resources Authority of Mongolia. The country gets two thirds of its export revenue from mining, the government body said.
Spurring the exploration is China demand and drilling by Ivanhoe Mines Ltd., owned by billionaire Robert Friedland, at the Oyu Tolgoi deposit in Mongolia`s South Gobi region. Oyu Tolgoi may contain the world`s fifth largest reserves of copper and gold, the government said, and the deposit sits 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the border with China, the world`s largest copper user.
``Deposits like Oyu Tolgoi don`t normally come singly, they tend to come in bunches,`` said Doug McGay, chief executive of closely held copper, gold and diamond explorer Batu Mining Mongolia LLC, who has worked in Mongolia for seven years. ``It would stretch belief to think the biggest copper-gold deposit in Mongolia had already been discovered.``
Copper prices have risen 53 percent in the last 12 months on the London Metal Exchange, spurred by rising demand in China, which is building more cars, buildings and household appliances. Gold futures in New York have risen 8.5 percent during the same period, as a weaker U.S. dollar prompted investors to seek alternative investments.
Spending
Private exploration investment in Mongolia is set to rise by more than a third this year to $50 million, from $37 million in 2003, Gund Dugar Jargalsaikhan, the mineral authority`s chairman, said in an interview in Ulan Bator, ahead of a speech he`ll give today at the mining conference, Discover Mongolia 2004.
China`s economy is booming and needs minerals that Mongolia can supply, Gund said, adding that the country also plans to supply Japan, South Korea and Russia.
``These four countries buy mineral products worth $40 billion a year,`` based on a 2001 estimate, Gund said.
Brazil-based Vale and smaller companies such as Canada`s Erdene Gold Inc. are moving into Mongolia to pick up where Russian geologists left off after the former Soviet Union started to withdraw from the country in 1989.
Vale has exploration rights to 1.7 million hectares in northern Mongolia. Erdene began drilling for copper and gold last month and has exploration rights to 400,000 hectares in the country. AngloGold, the world`s second-largest gold producer, and Barrick, the third biggest, are also exploring in Mongolia.
Mongolia`s exploration rights are on a first-come, first- served basis and the country`s mining legislation is based on laws in Australia, Chile and Canada, which international investors understand, Gund said. The government has revised the laws twice since it moved toward a market economy in 1991 to attract investment.
By the end of this year, licenses will likely be issued for 40 percent of the area open for exploration, up from 22 percent at the end of 2003, according to the mineral authority`s data.
Mongolia sent officials to Australia to study mining policy and is getting loans from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank to build road and rail networks to help boost exports, said Gund.
``Mongolia`s attractive to foreign investors because we`ve had more than a decade of transition, and I think we can say it`s been a successful one,`` said Barry Hitchcock, the Asian Development Bank`s chief Mongolia representative.
Economy
Mongolia is banking on investment from Vale, Ivanhoe and other miners to help the country double economic output within five to 10 years, according to Gund, 44, who studied mining in Moscow and was financial director of a state-owned Mongolian mining company until moving to his current post in 1997.
``The geology (in Mongolia) is considered very prospective, and the government has a new mining act I understand is based on Canada`s,`` said Euan Leckie, who helps manage the equivalent of more than $5 billion at Deutsche Asset Management in Sydney. ``It`s no surprise there is a fair bit of interest.``
Last month, Ivanhoe said it may begin producing copper and gold from Oyu Tolgoi, known as Turquoise Hill, in 2007.
Transport Problem
Mongolia and China haven`t reached an agreement, expected in the first half this year, on a $300 million loan Chinese President Hu Jintao offered Mongolia during a visit to Ulan Bator last year. The loan is to build roads and railroads that would bring copper, coal and iron ore from the southern Gobi to China.
While most of the exploration in Mongolia is focused on copper, gold and iron ore, it could be China`s need for electricity that speeds up spending on railroads in Mongolia.
China, the world`s fastest-growing economy, had power blackouts in four major cities and 24 of 27 provinces this year. The government said it will accelerate construction of power plants, including coal-fired units, in the next six years, adding the equivalent of enough capacity each year to power Sweden.
