      ALTERNATIVE ENERGY / SOLID WASTE

Ministry to turn garbage into gas
      YUTHANA PRAIWAN
Energy policymakers hope to turn garbage into gas under an ambitious programme aimed at developing over 10,000 small-scale biogas programmes nationwide over the next five years.
The programme, run by the Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency Department, focuses on tapping methane generated from solid waste into a cooking-gas substitute for LPG.
Pisamai Sathienyawon, a senior scientist and a DEDE consultant, said shopping mall food courts, large restaurants and fresh markets would all be targeted for participation in the programme.
The food court at the Energy Ministry became the first project under the programme last year.
The DEDE now plans to provide machinery and equipment for producing biogas free of charge to 400 public schools in Greater Bangkok next year. By 2011, support would be offered to 1,400 schools nationwide, at an initial cost of 60,000 baht per school.
But each project is expected to break even within just two years, thanks to the energy savings generated from biogas.

The government had previously focused on large-scale biogas projects processing at over five tonnes a day of solid waste.
Processing plants, typically located at factories and large communities, generate electricity with financial support from the government and incentive privileges from the Board of Investment.
The DEDE project however aims at a much smaller scale, processing 10 to 20 kilogrammes of waste per day to generate methane of 2.5 cubic metres. The methane in turn is equivalent to two kilogrammes of cooking gas.
Mrs Pisamai said private individuals interested in joining the programme could apply for technical supports free of charge from the government.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA) recently joined the DEDE's biogas programme to help fresh markets reduce their costs as well as solid waste that would otherwise have to go to local landfills.
The Marketing Organisation for Farmers and wholesale markets also will participate in the programme.
"[The BMA] approached us as they have problems coping with the huge amount of solid waste generated each day," Mrs Pisamai said.
The BMA also incurs huge costs for waste management, paying 1,000 baht per tonne to private contractors.
Mrs Pisamai said the DEDE would eventually expand the biogas programme to include shopping centres, office buildings and other commercial facilities.

ENERGY / ALTERNATIVE SOURCES AND STRATEGIC PLANNING
State venture to export solar cells
      YUTHANA PRAIWAN
A new public-private joint venture is being formed to produce solar cells for export.
The National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) will hold between 25% and 49% in the new company through its Institute of Solar Cell Energy Technology (Iset), with the rest held by a private company that has not been named.
An NSTDA board committee recently approved the 500-million-baht venture, according to Dr Porponth Sichanugrist, the assistant to the NSTDA president.
The plant, located in Pathum Thani province, will have an annual capacity of 200,000 cells or equivalent to 10 megawatts. Details will be finalised by the end of this year.
The factory will MAKe highly efficient thin-film cells using advanced technology that can convert at least 10% of the solar heat in each cell to electricity. The efficiency ratio of most cells is only 7%.
Dr Porponth said that once the plant starts production commercially, the selling price of solar units will drop by 50% from the current 700,000 baht per set.
He said the funds for investment would come from production and equipment technology patents owned by Iset, which has earned revenue from sales to private companies since 1998.
Iset's clients include Bangkok Solar Ltd and Hybrid Solar Cell Ltd.
Its research and development unit is studying dye-sensitised solar cell technology, which will improve the efficiency of a cell.
It also experimenting with a new form of solar cell that could be installed on walls instead of on rooftops, which would help expand the space exposed to solar rays. The new invention will be demonstrated to public at The Energy Complex, the new head office building of PTT Plc next year.
Dr Porponth urged the government to resume promotion of solar cells in the residential sector, as it would help raise demand and allow producers to create economies of scale, bringing costs down.
A government-backed programme to promote solar cells for individual houses in 2004 gained popularity among high-income homeowners, but the programme ended a year later. The main problem at the time was that the solar cells were inefficient, able to power only two personal computers, a television set and a single lightbulb.
But tax privileges are available for owners of single houses that uses up to 10 megawatts generated from solar power, but this would require a large number of cells.
Dr Porponth proposed that the Energy Ministry support solar cells for households by reducing the solar consumption rate per unit that could qualify the owners for tax privileges, saying that developed countries such as Japan and Germany spent billions of dollars to promote solar power.
However, Energy Minister Piyasvasti Amranand seems to disagree, believing the existing incentives for wind farms, solid waste and wastewater power generation are more appropriate for a developing country such as Thailand.
"The promotions for solar cell manufacturers should be aimed at exports to OECD countries that have high budgets to subsidise clean energy even though it is expensive," he said.

Antwort auf Beitrag Nr.: 31.548.138 von cmeise am 12.09.07 16:18:01Jetzt habe ich doch etwas zum Thema Solar bei Omron gefunden:
      http://www.omron.com/news/n_131206.html
"OMRON is currently focusing on solving emerging needs related to product quality, safety, and the environment. Through its European sales subsidiary, OMRON Europe B.V., OMRON will continue to focus on supplying the robust and highly reliable control components required for solar power systems, while leveraging its strong sales and support systems in the EU to actively expand sales in this area."

Also eher kleinteilig - off grid.

"Mr.Akaradej Rojmeta (CEO) and the Executive management are welcome the investor from Contron Corporation to visited at Solartron Technology Center, Nakornratchasima on September 8,2007"

      SOLAR PANELS / EARNINGS
      Solartron struggles with sales slowdown
      ARANEE JAIIMSIN
Solartron Plc, a SET-listed solar module assembler, will struggle to break even in the current poor investment climate, says chief executive Akaradej Rojmeta.
The company expects to report lower sales compared to last year, which stood at 1.11 billion baht. He hopes the upcoming quarter will sell enough for the company to break even this year.
Solartron attributes the poor performance to a generally slow economy.
''This year, we have not had orders from any big projects after the Solar Home Project, run by Solartron for the Provincial Electricity Authority, that was finished a year ago,'' he said.
The Solar Home Project contributed 98% of the company's overall income last year.
Mr Akaradej added the economic slowdown and unattractive Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) policies by the Energy Ministry had also delayed investments in solar power projects. He urged government assistance for the industry, and encouraged authorities to raise prices above eight baht per unit.
''We hope the new government will introduce policies to help improve the solar power generators' balance sheets,'' said Mr Akaradej.
Solartron is now reviewing its strategic plan that is scheduled to start in 2008. It expects to cut production costs by 10%-20% next year when its 1.1-billion-baht solar cell factory starts operations. It will also focus on private-sector rather than public-sector sales. This year, it expects to see private clients generate at least half of total revenues.
The company will also focus on the export market, particularly southern European markets where new solar power plants are being built. Even though exports would generate lower profit margins than domestic sales, Solartron aims to raise the ratio of export revenue to 75% next year, from only 2% in 2006.
The company plans to apply for the European industrial product standard and expects to win certification by the end of this year, said Mr Akaradej.
At present, Solartron is negotiating with a number of potential clients in Europe for sales of units totalling 20 megawatts of solar cells next year.
Korea is another possible market as the Korean government is seeking to build new solar power plants in the near future, said Mr Akaradej.
Solartron shares closed on Friday on the Stock Exchange of Thailand at 2.80 baht, down six satang, in trade worth 5.38 million baht.
