Kodak this week unveiled a new high-resolution image sensor, which is expected to bring 5-megapixel cameras to more mobile phones.
Kodak claims its new KAC-05020 Image Sensor is the world's first 1.4 micron, 5-megapixel device. It's designed for the mass market to be used inside consumer devices, such as mobile phones.

The sensor combines Color Filter Pattern technology with a CMOS pixel, allowing a high level of resolution in small optical formats using smaller pixels. That means the KAC-05020 offer better image quality than other small-pixel sensors, which can produce poor images, said Kodak.
CMOS -- or Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor -- can be used as a light sensor to capture images taken by digital cameras. Kodak uses a re-engineered version of the technology called Truesense CMOS pixel that improves the design and structure of the pixel for better imaging performance.
"By completely rethinking the design of the CMOS pixel and leveraging our work with high sensitivity color filter patterns and algorithms, Kodak was able to develop this remarkable new sensor that will enable a level of imaging performance previously unavailable from CMOS devices," said Chris McNiffe, general manager of Kodak's Image Sensor Solutions business, in a statement.
Once embedded into mobile camera phones, the KAC-05020 will enable advanced features like digital image stabilization, rapid auto-focus, red-eye reduction, and facial recognition, Kodak said. It will also support 720p high-definition video capture; it employs the progressive scan technique to produce an image in a continuous fashion.
Kodak's new sensor will be showcased next week at the GSMA Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona. Samples of the sensor will become available in the second quarter of this year.
While it's uncommon, some mobile phones already come with built-in 5-megapixel cameras. Last month, Samsung unveiled its SGH-F490 iPhone-like multimedia phone with a full touch screen. The phone has a 5-megapixel camera and video capabilities, and so do Nokia (NYSE: NOK)'s N95 and N82 multimedia devices, and Sony Ericsson's K850 Cyber-shot phone.

After completing a four-year, $3.4 billion overhaul, Kodak predicted at its annual investor meeting that sales will grow 5% on average each year through 2011, driven by a strong 10% to 12% rise in digital revenue.
Its forecast of $10.3 billion to $10.5 billion in 2008 sales is at the higher end of a Wall Street range of $9.9 billion to $10.3 billion among analysts polled by Thomson Financial.
Kodak's stock, which skidded to a 30-year low of $16.66 on Jan. 22, rose 59 cents, or 3.1%, to $19.24 in recent trading.
Its digital businesses - from cameras, retail kiosks and printers to intellectual property licensing deals - should account for about 70% of overall sales and 60% of profits in 2008. Profits from continuing operations will range between $250 million and $275 million, Kodak said.
"This is a very different company than the company we had four years ago," Chief Executive Antonio Perez told analysts and institutional investors in New York in outlining a new strategy to remodel the world's biggest film manufacturer into a leader in digital photography and commercial printing.
"Everything we promised that we were going to deliver financially, we did, from our point of view," he said. "So maybe, just maybe, we should have some credibility for the next four, if I may ask."
One of the key components Perez is banking on to replace the huge profits Kodak once made from film is a line of inkjet printers introduced last March that he hopes will generate double-digit operating margins within three years.
Kodak sold 520,000 inkjet printers last year - exceeding a half-million-unit target. It expects to sell two to three times as many in 2008 and said it remains on course to hit a break-even goal of $1 billion in sales by 2010.
Hewlett-Packard commands close to half of all global sales in the $50 billion printer market, and market research group InfoTrends expects the color home- printer sector to grow to $16.2 billion in 2010.
"We're just new in the inkjet business and they're always comparing us with HP. We feel very honored," said Perez, who expects Kodak to eventually grab a No. 2 slot in revenues.
Kodak said its replacement ink cartridges, priced at $10 for black ink and $15 for color, still cost roughly half as much as the competition's. The multipurpose printers were originally priced at about $50 more than comparable machines on the market.
Rather than lowering ink prices, competitors have cut the price of printers over the last year, Perez elaborated in an interview.
"We've sold the printers at more than 30% than the average of the industry," he said. "We didn't want to be that much higher. Obviously our competitors have been discounting heavily to make it difficult for us to be successful."
Kodak's long-awaited entry into the rough-and-tumble inkjet market - it also expects to shake up the commercial printing arena this year - is a do-or-die strategy, some analysts say.
"I think it's critical," said Chris Chute of IDC, a market research firm near Boston. "The happy days of film are gone."

EK war ja wohl eine Macht für sich selbst.
Die Entwickling der Digitalphotographie haben Sie leider unterschätzt und sind böse erwacht.
Mit Filmen ist nichts mehr zu holen.
Mit den Kameras waren und sind sie leider nur zweite Wahl, die computerisierten Entwicklungsmaschinen scheinen auch kein Wurf zu sein.
Ob der Weg in die Druckerherstellung sinnvoll ist (bei der Konkurrenz - ) erscheint mir fraglich.
Aber:
1.)Schaut man sich große Portale der Datenspeicherung und Bearbeitung an - siehe bes. im medizinischen Bereich wo Kodak ja neben Agfa bei jedem Thoraxröntgen und CT/MR das Filmmaterial lieferte - spielt Kodak mit seiner PACS-View ja geradezu eine Vorreiterrolle.
2.) Seit ca. 8 Jahren habe ich die Entwicklung der OLED Technologie mitverfolgt.
Diese OLED Displays finden immer weitere Verbreitung (in jedem MP3 Player, Handy........). Mittlerweilen ist die Technologie soweit ausgereift das auch Monitore und angeblich auch schon Großleinwände möglich sind. -- Und Kodak war einer der ersten Entwickler und hält unzählige Patente auf diesem Gebiet !!!
Sollte doch auch irgendwann zum pekuniärem Ertrag führen.
Ich denke die haben den Turnaround geschafft und für meinen Teil werde ich eine Positon EK in meinem Portfolio aufbauen.
Die Frage wird sicher der Einstiegzeitpunkt sein. Im Moment denke ich ist es noch besser im Cash zu bleiben.

Kodak today announced its intent to acquire Design2Launch, Inc. developer of a collaborative end-to-end digital workflow solution for marketing and creative teams in the pharmaceutical, food&beverage, automotive, and consumer package marketplaces. Kodak today announced its intent to acquire Design2Launch, Inc. developer of a collaborative end-to-end digital workflow solution for marketing and creative teams in the pharmaceutical, food&beverage, automotive, and consumer package marketplaces. Design2Launch is a proven player in the rapidly expanding corporate solutions software market and is a pioneer of “Graphic Lifecycle Management.“ Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Eastman Kodak Co. (EK) is testing a 35-plus year low, so the folks at Citigroup figure it might be time to lay off the camera, printer and media expert. Analyst Matthew Trop is closing out his long held “sell” rating on Kodak shares and moving to a “hold,” but still remains very cautious on the company’s fundamentals, pointing to its balance sheet as one factor that could produce more structural downside in the near term.
But with $10 in cash per share, Kodak’s cash-to-market cap ratio of 60% is eight times that of the S&P 500, which is at 7%, excluding the financials. Its U.S. pension plan is overfunded with a surplus of $2.1-billion, which is considered another factor mitigating the previous balance sheet risk associated with Kodak.
However, with near-term vulnerabilty in the company’s two end markets - consumer and commercial print – Kodak still faces an uphill battle, the analyst said in regards to why the shares are not rated a “buy” at this point.
Mr. Troy also cut his price target for Kodak shares from $22 to $20. It closed at $16.92 on Thursday.

Bis auf wenige Cent hat sich EASTMAN KODAK heute dem charttechnischen Kursziel von 14,80 USD angenähert. Da die U.S.A.-Börsen im heutigen Verlauf wieder anziehen, kommt es mir auf das Feilschen um ein paar Cent auch nicht mehr an und ich habe vor einigen Minuten über L&S außerbörslich meine erste Position gekauft. Es darf (und wird) mittelfristig wieder aufwärts gehen.

The company announced yesterday a plan to buyback $1 billion in EK shares with the help of a $541 million tax refund dated all the way back to 1993. With a $4.04 Billion market cap and a 4% dividend, Eastman Kodak looks like a company that will be a solid investment for a longer term holding period.

The company itself has performed poorly over the last two quarters missing both and missing the March quarter badly. The stock has declined over 50% in the past 52 weeks and has a high Short Ratio of 8.8. Without the buyback announced Tuesday, the stock would be something you would stay away from. But now you have to consider the dividend completely safe and the stock price at a bottom.

A large amount of Call volume yesterday in two different months shows investors looking for more price appreciation due to the news of the buyback. The July 15 Strike price had an unusual amount of volume ending the day with 15,622 options traded. Similarly, the October 15 Strike Calls saw high volume of 5,573 contracts yesterday.

Nach dem Kauf am 02.06.2008 habe ich meine Position bei EASTMAN KODAK heute vor einigen Minuten über L&S außerbörslich ausgebaut. Ich baue auf ein Langzeitinvestment, bei dem ich in einer Hype-Phase in einigen Jahrzehnten hoffentlich Gewinne, dann steuerfrei, realisieren werde. Wie ich neulich schon einmal geschrieben habe: es darf (und wird) mittelfristig wieder aufwärts gehen. 
Der heutige Kurssturz hat mich nun doch noch ermutigt endlich in EK einzusteigen.
Allein die Oled Technologie müßte es schon richten.
Erinnert mich irgendwie an Apple vor dem IPOD und der Downloadbörse. Waren das schöne Zeiten.

6 Stocks Ripe for Some Bottom-Fishing
Eastman Kodak (EK: 8.47, -0.87, -9.31%) turned up recently on a bargain hunt among stocks hitting fresh 52-week lows. It might as well have been a screen for decade lows, or two-decade lows, or four-decade ones. In the past decade alone, Kodak stockholders have watched their principal shrink by 89% and their dividends collapse from $1.76 a share to 50 cents.
Let's not continue to blame Kodak's demise on the shift from print photography to digital. IBM (IBM: 85.15, -4.29, -4.79%) has managed to multiply more than 15 times in value since the early 1960s, even though I haven't used a typewriter in two decades. Nor should we continue to assume that Kodak's shift to digital photography products will eventually revive its stock. True, Kodak's third-quarter profit, reported Oct. 30, more than doubled and its digital business produced decent sales. But overall sales slipped 5%. The profit jump was owed mostly to a comparison against year-ago profits that were clipped by big restructuring charges.
Consider this hopeful headline: "Kodak Net Soars as Its Focus Shifts to Digital Lines." You'd pay $10,000 or $10 million, too. The sales outlook for Kodak might be dismal -- Wall Street expects declines of 4% this year and 6.5% next year -- but this is, after all, a company that will produce more than $9 billion in sales next year. Its net worth, or assets less liabilities, is listed at more than $4 billion.
I wouldn't call Kodak the picture of financial strength; its corporate debt is rated below investment grade and Standard & Poor's has the company on its watch list for a possible downgrade. But the company holds $1.8 billion in cash and equivalents, an amount equal to four-fifths of its stock market value and which exceeds its long-term debt by a half-billion dollars. So the dividend seems safe for now. Also, Kodak has reduced its debt by $294 million this year and last quarter spent $219 million on its own stock. (I'm not sure if the latter qualifies as management confidence or a lack of appreciation for the stock's history, but I'll bet stockholders would have preferred a one-time dividend.)
All told, a suitably ugly price for Kodak seems to be something like 25 cents on the dollar for the stuff it owns free and clear, plus about 10 years' worth of dividends upfront. Such a price would value, say, General Electric (GE: 18.34, -1.59, -7.97%), another long-term disappointment whose shares I recently snubbed at $19, at about $15 a share. 6 Stocks Ripe for Some Bottom-Fishing
Eastman Kodak (EK: 8.47, -0.87, -9.31%) turned up recently on a bargain hunt among stocks hitting fresh 52-week lows. It might as well have been a screen for decade lows, or two-decade lows, or four-decade ones. In the past decade alone, Kodak stockholders have watched their principal shrink by 89% and their dividends collapse from $1.76 a share to 50 cents.
Let's not continue to blame Kodak's demise on the shift from print photography to digital. IBM (IBM: 85.15, -4.29, -4.79%) has managed to multiply more than 15 times in value since the early 1960s, even though I haven't used a typewriter in two decades. Nor should we continue to assume that Kodak's shift to digital photography products will eventually revive its stock. True, Kodak's third-quarter profit, reported Oct. 30, more than doubled and its digital business produced decent sales. But overall sales slipped 5%. The profit jump was owed mostly to a comparison against year-ago profits that were clipped by big restructuring charges.

And the OLED revolution extends beyond our TV screens -- the common light bulb is another target in its slim, thrifty crosshairs.
Looking back at this magazine in five or 10 years, the 11-inch XEL-1 may look about as quaint as 2003's Dell Jukebox music player does today. The concept is there, waiting to be developed into a truly remarkable moneymaker. However, there's no clear frontrunner here, as there was when Apple took charge of the media-player market with its game-changing iPod.

UPDATE 1-Kodak reaches deal to amend credit agreement
SAN FRANCISCO, April 3 (Reuters) - Eastman Kodak Co (News/Aktienkurs) has reached a deal with lenders to amend its credit agreement giving it much-needed financial flexibility as it struggles with falling demand for its photography products.
Kodak said on Friday the new credit facility provides for revolving loans and letters of credit for up to $500 million.
In addition, the company said it is no longer subject to quarterly testing for two financial covenants under its previous credit deal.
Instead, the new agreement institutes a minimum fixed charge coverage ratio -- used to show that a company can pay its fixed financing expenses -- that will apply if borrowing availability falls under $100 million.
Kodak also said it must maintain a cash balance of at least $250 million in the U.S.
Currently, there are $131 million of letters of credit issued under the new agreement and no debt.
'One of our goals for 2009 is to maintain financial flexibility, and we are very pleased to have reached this agreement, especially in this current credit environment,' said Chief Financial Officer Frank Sklarsky in a statement.
In January, Kodak posted a quarterly loss and said it would cut up to 4,500 more jobs this year. The company has seen a steep decline in demand for digital cameras and commercial printing equipment.
Shares of Rochester, New York-based Eastman Kodak closed the regular session down 3 cents at $4.37 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Kodak Posts Big Loss; Suspends Div; Cutting More Costs

Eastman Kodak (EK) this morning posted a larger-than-expected first quarter loss, suspended dividend payments and announced some new steps to cut costs.
For the quarter, Kodak posted sales of $1.48 billion, down 29% from a year ago, and well below the Street consensus of $1.64 billion. The company lost $1.34 a share in the quarter, including 39 cents a share in restructuring charges; the loss of 95 cents on a pro forma basis was much worse than the Street consensus for a loss of 33 cents a share.
Gross margin the quarter was 13.1%, down from 20.3% a year ago. I would note that SG&A was down 20% and R&D was off 21% - both less than the rate of decline at the top line.
Kodak has $1.309 billion in cash - and $1.306 billion in debt.
To conserve cash, the company is suspending dividends on its common stock. The company also said it will cut the salary of CEO Antonio Perez by 15%. Board member compensation will be reduced by 10%. Senior management will also have a 10% salary cut through the end of 2009. All Kodak employees will take one week of unpaid leave before the end of the year. And the company said it is exploring alternative to conserve cash in other countries and regions outside the U.S.
The company repeated previous 2009 guidance for overall revenue to be down 12%-18%, with digital revenue down 6%-12%. Kodak sees GAAP loss from continuing operations of $200 million to $400 million, and EBITDA of $475 million to $675 million.
EK today is off 9 cents, or 2.5%, to $3.55.

Late last month, the company announced that it would end production of its legendary Kodachrome film. The stock actually rose 14.5% over the next week, hitting $3 a share before dropping off again in continued volatile trading.
"They're in a fight for their life," says Morningstar analyst Richard Hanna, one of the few analysts still covering the company. "They've been facing the erosion of their film business for years. The removal of Kodachrome was pretty much symbolic of how they could be on their last legs."
If the company is going to survive in any form, it's going to be smaller and probably more focused on its digital printing business, he says. Kodak has tried to adapt to the digital age, but its scattershot product lines have been met with stiff competition. Neither digital cameras nor inkjet printers have made strong impressions on consumers, says Hanna.
"Name any of their competitors and they have more advantages than Eastman Kodak," he says.

Ich bin seit gestern auch dabei, der Kurs hatte die Tage zuvor massiv korrigiert und könnte nun wieder den Aufwärtstrend der vergangenen Wochen und Monate fortsetzen. Als long invest sehe ich hier sehr gute Chancen, richtig abzusahnen.

If that happened, you would have HPQ coming in with a bid at $20 to get this company under its wings. Canon would also bid. Sort of like when China tried to buy Maytag and everybody moaned and groaned. Whirlpool won that one in the end.

Kodak stock (NYSE:EK) was trading midday at $4.43, up from $3.97 at Wednesday’s close.
The company reported a third-quarter loss from continuing operations of $43 million, or 16 cents a share, versus a loss of $111 million, or 41 cents a share, a year ago. Excluding special items, the loss was $5 million, or 2 cents a share; the Thomson Reuters consensus forecast a loss of 31 cents a share.
Third-quarter sales totaled nearly $1.76 billion, a 1 percent decline from the same quarter last year. Analysts projected sales of $1.61 billion.

Das letzte Quartal dürfte spannend werden. Ein Lizenzierungsgeschäft alleine ist keine gesunde Basis. Ich freue mich sehr, dass die Tintenstrahldrucker nun auch endlich vom Mediammarkt im Fernsehen beworben werden.

Eastman Kodak Co. said Thursday its new PYNK Smart Print System—which the company claims changes the landscape of the photo frame industry—is available at picture kiosks in 5,000 CVS/pharmacy stores nationwide.
The system automatically measures, crops, arranges and prints photos to fit a frame and uses proprietary Kodak technology that marries photos with “photo holders.” It creates a print-to-fit system.
The company had conducted successful trials of the system at CVS/pharmacy stores in Westchester County. The system debuts Thursday at most CVS/pharmacy stores nationwide.
Consumers at CVS/pharmacy stores will be offered a variety of collage frames, as well as mats that can be used in many existing frames.
CVS/pharmacy stores are part of the Rhode Island-based CVS Caremark Corp.

Eine traurige Nachricht für alle Fotofreunde: Vor wenigen Tagen, am 31. Dezember 2010, hat in den USA das letzte Labor, das den legendären Kodachrome-Film entwickelt hat, geschlossen.
Der Kodachrome war so etwas wie der Höhepunkt der Farbfotografie des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der Film bestand aus drei getrennten Schichten und war deshalb besonders schwierig zu entwickeln. Dafür bot er eine hohe Schärfe, feines Korn und leuchtende Farben. Viele der berühmten Bilder des letzten Jahrhunderts wurden mit dem Kodachrome gemacht. Die Feuilletons haben das Ende des legendären Farbfilms wortreich betrauert.

Damit enden die Hoffnungen des iPhone-Herstellers, die frühere Entscheidung zu Kodaks Gunsten noch einmal umkehren zu können.
Apple hatte seine Klage im vergangenen Jahr eingereicht. Ihm zufolge verletzt Kodak das US-Patent 6.031.964: Es beschreibt "ein System und eine Methode, um eine Unified-Memory-Architektur für den Einbau einer digitalen Kamera in ein Gerät zu nutzen". Außerdem warf Apple Kodak einen Verstoß gegen sein Patent RE38.911 vor, mit dem es sich ein Verfahren für "modulare Bildverarbeitung über eine Bildbearbeitungskette mit modifizierbaren Steuerparametern" hat schützen lassen.
Im Mai hatte ITC-Richter Robert Rogers geurteilt, die Apple-Patente würden durch Kodak nicht verletzt. Es handelte sich um ein Urteil in erster Instanz ("initial determination"), das die volle ITC-Kommission mit sechs Mitgliedern hätte revidieren können. Das hat sie nun aber nicht getan - und der Prozess ist damit beendet.
Allerdings läuft noch parallel eine Kodak-Klage gegen Apple und Research In Motion vom Januar, die Apple lediglich gekontert hatte. Mit Eastman Kodak geht es weiter bergab. Der amerikanische Fotofilmhersteller wird durch die Ratingagentur Moody's herabgestuft. Vom einstigen Glanz ist kaum noch etwas übriggeblieben. Kodak war durch den Erfolg der Digitalkameras unter Druck geraten, weil der Bedarf nach analogen Fotofilmen immer weiter zurückging.

Nach Gerüchten über ein CH11-Filing heute der Totaleinbruch bei Aktie und Bonds. 2013er Bond aktuell bei unter 43 gehandelt.
Für mutige Investoren vielleicht eine Gelegenheit schon mittlerweile. Kodak hat nachbörslich CH11-Absichten dementiert und wird auch die morgen fälligen Zinskupons der Anleihen pünktlich bedienen.
Ein Kauf der Bonds ist in jedem Fall den Aktien vorzuziehen, da wie wahrscheinlich mittlerweile den meisten bekannt, Bonds im CH11-Verfahren vor den Aktien bedient werden - überhaupt sind "ordinary shares" immer die letzten in der Gläubigerschlange.
Aber selbst die Aktien könnten im Gläubigerschutzverfahren eventuell noch Wert behalten, je nachdem zu welchem Preis Kodak sein Patentportfolio losschlagen kann. Analysten behaupten, es könnte bis zu 3 Mrd. Dollar erlösen, das wäre mehr als das Doppelte der ausstehenden Anleihen.
Das erscheint allerdings nicht sehr realistisch, wenn man sieht, dass die ganze Firma zum Schlusskurs nur noch mit etwas mehr als 200 Mio. Dollar bewertet wird. Ein Interessent könnte also einfach den ganzen Laden kaufen und würde so deutlich billiger an die Patente kommen - es sei denn, dass im Gesamtpaket so viele Lasten schlummern, dass sich ein Kauf dann doch wieder nicht rechnet.
Dafür spricht auch, dass angeblich einige der Patentinteressenten Bedenken haben, dass im Falle eines Kaufs und einer eventuell später folgenden Insolvenz Kodaks massive Gläubigerrückforderungen an den Patenterwerber gestellt werden könnten. Werden nämlich ein Jahr vor der Pleite wesentliche Vermögensteile ausgegliedert oder verkauft dann kann das nach US-Recht ein sog. "fraudulent transfer" sein, der im schlimmsten Fall sogar die Rückgabe des unrechtmäßig erworbenen Firmeneigentums bedingen kann.
Um den angestrebten Patentdeal frei von solchen Risiken über die Bühne zu bringen, würde Kodak angeblich ein CH11-Filing im Vorfeld prüfen - so die Gerüchteküche heute nachdem Kodak ein spezialisierte Kanzlei angeheuert hat.
Das nachbörsliche Dementi von CH11-Plänen hat der Aktie wieder Auftrieb gegeben, aktuell rund 35% hoch.
Die Aktie wird volatil bleiben in den nächsten Tagen und Wochen, so dass sich einige Tradingchancen ergeben.
Persönlich gehe ich von einem CH11-Filing im nächsten Jahr aus, falls nicht doch Unsummen aus dem Patentportfolio erlöst werden oder es tatsächlich zu einer Übernahme kommen sollte. Möglicherweise werden die Aktien dabei nicht wertlos, sollte bei der Patentauktion ein ähnlicher Wahnsinnsbetrag wie zuletzt bei Nortel erlöst werden.
Eine sehr spannende Spekulation.
