(SAB), ein Unternehmen, das sich mit der Entwicklung von Biopharmaka in der klinischen Phase beschäftigt, gab bekannt, dass seine Anti-MERS-Immuntherapie (SAB-301) in der Phase I der klinischen Studie allem Anschein nach sicher ist. Ergebnisse der Studie, die von der Behörde National Institutes of Health (NIH) gesponsert, finanziert und durchgeführt wird, wurden heute in The Lancet Infectious Diseases veröffentlicht.

Zur Produktion von SAB-301 wurden Tc Bovine mit einem MERS-Antigen von Novavax geimpft. Innerhalb kurzer Zeit produzieren die Rinder erhebliche Mengen von vollständig menschlichen Antikörpern, um dieses Virus zu bekämpfen. Das Plasma wurde (in ähnlicher Weise wie von menschlichen Plasmaspendern) gewonnen und anschließend aufbereitet, um die Antikörper für die therapeutische Behandlung zu isolieren.

Novavax Surges On RSV Vaccine Clinical Update
News: Novavax (NVAX) surged 44% on Wednesday after its presentation at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference. The reason for the surge is because Novavax announced that its phase 3 trial for RSV F vaccine for newborns by immunizing mothers showed positive data on an informational analysis. That is that the primary endpoint was looking for the incidence of lower RSV respiratory tract infection. There was an information analysis done based on a target efficacy threshold that was reached. It was shown that the efficacy reached its threshold and thus shares of Novavax surged. This analysis was performed by a data safety monitoring board (DSMB) who concluded that the company met all the criteria required to consider the study a success.

Analysis: This is the best news possible for Novavax. That's because its RSV F vaccine candidate that was in phase 3 for older adults had failed back in July of 2017. The company had made the case that their RSV F vaccine program was not over, and had pointed to other ways of improving efficacy. Such a way of potentially improving the efficacy of the RSV F is by using an adjuvant. Interim data is expected to be readout by Q4 of 2018 or early Q1 of 2019 from this latest positive data. If the results hold up, that means the company can move on to file for regulatory approval in the U.S. by late 2019. Why is this an important program? Well, there are two reasons. For one, Novavax has no approved products from its pipeline. An approval for RSV F would result as a first for the company, in terms of obtaining approval for a product in its pipeline. What's so special about that is that the company was founded in 1987 with no approved product to date. Based on this early data, I believe that Novavax has a good shot at finally obtaining approval for a product from its pipeline. Secondly, global sales for this program could reach peak sales of at least $1.5 billion. That would eventually bring in much needed cash. This is especially true considering that the company still has a pipeline of other products it can work on to advance to later stages.
