      Update von Tullow:

      http://www.tullowoil.com/index.asp?pageid=137&newsid=782&rss…

      11 Sep 2012
      Mbawa-1 Drilling Update

Tullow Oil plc (Tullow) announces that the Mbawa-1 exploration well in the L8 licence area, offshore Kenya, has now been deepened and reached a total depth of 3151 metres.

As previously announced, the Mbawa-1 exploration well encountered approximately 52 metres of net gas pay in the primary target. However, the deeper, secondary target did not contain hydrocarbons. The operator is currently running wireline logs. On conclusion of this work, the well will be plugged and abandoned.

Apache (50%) is Operator of the offshore Block L8 Licence along with partners Origin Energy (20%), Pancontinental (15%) and Tullow (15%).

Commenting today, Angus McCoss, Exploration Director, said:

"A gas discovery on prognosis in the shallowest objective at Mbawa-1 is an encouraging start to our East African Transform Margin exploration campaign. This is the first hydrocarbon discovery offshore Kenya and gives a clear demonstration of a working petroleum system. Although the deeper targets at this location were unsuccessful these results will be vital in evaluating the still significant prospectivity of this block."

Dei Nachricht "Kenya's first gas strike not commercially viable" ist bei Google gerade mal 2 Stunden alt, die zweite 1 Stunde.

State kept in the dark on Malindi gas discovery

Tuesday, 11 September 2012 00:11 BY SOLOMON KIRIMI

Kenyan authorities are angry with multinational oil and gas explorers
who make major announcements of discovery of the hydrocarbons before informing the ministry of energy as outlined in their prospecting licenses as filing of returns. A ministry official who can not be quoted in the absence of express authority from seniors said the announcement by Australia's Pancontinental Oil & Gas company that natural gas had been found in Mbawa1 well was not communicated to the Kenya government.

The company holds 15 percent share of the license for the block L8 prospect where the Mbawa1 well is located 70 kilometers off the Malindi coast. Pancontinental had the previous day requested Australia's securities exchange to halt trading of its shares to await a major announcement, which turned out to be the natural gas discovery in Kenya.

Yesterday, the company's share price shot up 70 percent to A$0.19 after the announcement in Australia bourse, valuing the company at around $220 million, while shares in its much bigger partner, Tullow, were down 0.5 percent at 1397 pence by 0900 GMT. The announcement of Tullow oil's discovery of oil in Turkana at Nagmia well was also leaked to the foreign media outlets before the returns were filled with the ministry of energy.

Pancontinentals announcement yesterday said that large natural gas deposits have been discovered in Kenya. According to Britain's Tullow Oil and Australia's Pancontinental Oil & Gas companies which own 15 percent each in the blocks L8 license consortium, the gas was found in about 52 metres vertical stretch.

At the time of the announcement, drilling had reached a depth of 2,553 metres of the total target depth of 3,275 metres. This gas was found at the shallowest estimated hydrocarbons target depth by drilling operator Apache Corporation of the U.S which holds a 50 percent interest.

The lucky strike came after 29 days of drilling, out of the planned 60 day operation, in which the company hopes to have completed its drilling works. "With drilling continuing to a deeper exploration target, these interim results may be the first part of the story in this well, and they are certainly just the beginning of the main story of oil and gas exploration offshore Kenya," said Pancontinental's chief executive Barry Rushworth.

This becomes the first natural gas discovery in Kenyan territory. A series of recent discoveries offshore Tanzania and Mozambique have raised interest among world’s oil and gas exploration majors in the previously ignored East African region. Last month, the U.S. Geological Survey estimated that over 250 trillion cubic feet, or 7.1 trillion cubic metres of natural gas may lie off Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique, compared with 186 trillion cubic feet for Nigeria, Africa's biggest energy producer.

Kenya's first gas strike not commercially viable: Minister

Discovery of oil off east African country's coast is promising, but not enough, says energy minister
      Reuters, Tuesday 11 Sep 2012

Kenya's first offshore gas discovery is encouraging but not large enough for commercial production, the east African country's energy minister said on Tuesday.
British exploration firm Tullow Oil and Australia's Pancontinental Oil & Gas announced on Monday their consortium's operator Apache had found gas in an offshore well known as Mbawa-1.

Tullow also announced Kenya's first oil strike earlier this year, fuelling interest in the region's hydrocarbon potential. Neighbouring Tanzania estimates it has 28.74 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas reserves.

"The total amount of gas found is not sufficient in isolation to be commercial. We are however, encouraged that a reservoir containing hydrocarbons has been found," Kenya's Energy Minster Kiraitu Murungi told a news conference.

U.S.-based Apache, which has a 50 percent stake in the L8 block where Mbawa-1 is located, said on Tuesday the well would have needed to contain at least around three trillion cubic feet (85 billion cubic metres) of natural gas to justify building the infrastructure to liquefy and distribute it.

Even so, the managing director of Apache Kenya, Tim Gilblom, said the find would encourage other companies holding licenses in Kenya's other offshore blocks, including Anadarko and Britain's BG Group.

"The fact that we've proven that there is a hydrocarbon source below these basins gives them a higher chance of success, I would believe. So it's got to be good news for them," Gilblom told journalists.

Apache will spend the next year interpreting the data from Mbawa to determine if the gas was dry or the result of an oil formation. It will then drill a second well in the L8 block at the end of 2013.

"The key to remember is that we've proven that there is hydrocarbon source below Lamu Basin offshore Kenya and now all we have to do is further characterize it to figure out where the best next place to drill is," Gilblom said.
