      Uber launches self-driving cars project

Volvo Car Group has agreed a $300 million alliance with Uber to develop self-driving cars, the latest move by traditional vehicle manufacturers to team up with Silicon Valley firms seen as threats to their industry. The partnership will allow the Swedish-based carmaker, owned by China's Geely, and ride-hailing service Uber to pool resources into initially developing the autonomous driving capabilities of its flagship XC90 SUV model. The investment will be shared roughly equally by the two companies. Carpooling firms have formed alliances with large automakers to accelerate efforts to launch an autonomous car, a technology which depends on vehicle software and hardware working together to give a vehicle the right reflexes in traffic. Companies such as Uber would make drastic savings on their biggest cost -- paying drivers -- if they were able to incorporate self-driving cars into their fleet. For the carmakers themselves, the ability of consumers to hail a cab via a simple app or hire a car by the hour risks putting them off buying their own vehicle.

Toyota Motor Co (7203.T) has said it is investing an undisclosed sum in Uber, while German rival Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) has said it will back Gett, a ride-hailing company. General Motors (GM.N) has already acquired a stake in Uber's rival, Lyft. In the latest alliance, Uber will purchase Volvos and then install its own driverless control system for the specific needs of its ride-hailing service. Volvo will use the same vehicle for its own autonomous driving project, which is based on a plan that still envisages having a driver in the car. SAFETY FOCUS The investment will go towards researching and developing both hardware, such as sensors used to detect traffic and obstacles, as well as software for the self driving cars. "Autonomous driving is key. For this you need software to develop and be safe," Volvo Chief Executive Hakan Samuelsson told Reuters.

The deal does not stop either Volvo or Uber from striking alliances with others. Staff too will largely be kept within their own companies rather than shared. Volvo, bought by Geely from Ford (F.N) in 2010, has long enjoyed a reputation for its solid and reliable designs. "Volvo is a leader in vehicle development and best-in-class when it comes to safety," Travis Kalanick, Uber's chief executive, said in a statement. One of Sweden's biggest companies by sales, Volvo is banking on a 75 billion Swedish crowns ($9 billion) investment plan in new models and plants to secure a foothold in a premium market where it had struggled to make inroads under Ford's tutelage. Volvo aims to launch an experiment involving self-driving cars in China, Britain and Sweden. The self-driving cars that Volvo is envisioning will be like normal cars that alert the driver when autopilot mode can be activated, on freeways or in specific zones such as gated neighbourhoods or industrial parks, giving the driver the option to maintain or relinquish control.

      @joap: deine Rente ist sicher!:D

China’s Geely Automobile posts stronger than expected 35.8pc profit growth in first half
Chinese carmaker Geely Automobile posted a stronger-than-expected profit growth of 35.8 per cent in the first-half on buoyant sales of new sports utility vehicle models and higher sedan sales driven by a new product lineup.
Net profit for the six-month period increased to 1.91 billion yuan (HK$2.24 billion) from 1.4 billion yuan in the same period last year. The figure beat the 1.62 billion yuan median forecast of four analysts polled by the South China Morning Post.
      No interim dividend was declared.
Revenue for the first half rose 31 per cent to 18.09 billion yuan from last year’s 13.8 billion yuan, the company said in a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange.
Geely, which owns Swedish premium brand Volvo, sold 280,377 cars in the first half of this year, an increase of 11 per cent year on year.
Chairman Li Shufu said Geely’s first-half profit exceeded the company’s expectations with strong demand for its sedans and positive market response for new SUV models. However, its export business remained uncertain in markets including Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
“It is envisaged these external factors would persist and the group’s exports business could continue to face tremendous challenges in the remainder of 2016,” Li said in the exchange statement.
Exports in the first six months were down 40 per cent to 10,688 units from a year ago.

Li was upbeat on the domestic market and plans to add more offerings to its SUV lineup.
Under the SUV segment, the Zhejiang-based carmaker’s sales of three models reached 40,697 units in the first half, up 23 per cent from a year ago. The strong growth was boosted by the launch of two new models – Boyue and a crossover SUV Emgrand GS.
More than 19,000 Boyue units were sold after the model hit the market in March, while sales of the Emgrand GS, which was launched in May, reached 7,400 units in the first half.
Emgrand, Geely’s flagship sedan marque, remained the company’s best-selling model. The combined sales of the Emgrand series, including EC7’s upgraded version New Emgrand and an electric version Emgrand EV, came to a total of 106,959 units, an increase of 7 per cent from the previous year.
In the sedan segment, sales of its GC9 model, a B-class sedan launched in the second quarter of last year, increased more than threefold to 24,786 units. The strong rise was partly because of a lower base in same period of last year.
Geely began a reshuffle of its sales and marketing system in 2014 that subsequently delayed the launch of new models and took a toll on its auto sales. Analysts expect Geely to be back on track starting from this year, along with its strong model cycle.
Vincent Yu, an analyst with SWS Research, said Geely’s full-year sales are expected to beat its target of 600,000 units on the back of growth in SUV sales as it will launch another new model, Vision SUV, this month.
The brokerage raised its full-year auto sales forecast for Geely from 609,000 units to 650,000, with SUV sales for the year to reach 170,000 units, it said in a research note ahead of the result announcement.
Ahead of the results announcement, Geely’s share price fell 1.2 per cent in Hong Kong to end the morning session at HK$5.77.

London's Iconic Black Cab To Be Replaced With Hybrid By Chinese Automaker Geely

The iconic London TX4 taxi will finally meet its end in mid-2017 when it will be replaced by the brand new hybrid-electric TX5.

The London Taxi Company (LTC), the company that makes the TX4 and will make the TX5, is a fully owned subsidiary of the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, the entity that also owns Geely Auto and Volvo. Geely acquired LTC in 2013 and has since invested 300 million GBP ($390 million) into a new factory in Coventry that will build the TX5 and a range of light commercial vehicles.

The LTC TX5 has been designed by Geely’s design center in Barcelona, led by Peter Horbury, currently vice president of design at Geely, and formerly head of design at Volvo and at Ford North America. The design keeps many of the unique London taxi elements, like the large grille, the wide wheel arches, and the shape of the cabin.

But the TX5 is otherwise completely new. It is bigger than the TX4 and will accommodate six passengers. It has rear-hinged rear doors (“suicide doors”) for easy access; it comes with WiFi and with a panoramic glass roof to admire the rainy British skies.
There are more changes underneath. The body structure is made out of aluminum instead of steel, saving weight. And the old dirty diesel engines are gone, replaced by a brand new plug-in hybrid electric drive train with a small petrol engine that functions as a range extender, just like in the Chevrolet Volt .

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the middle of next year. But unlike previous times LTC doesn’t have the British roads for itself anymore. There is competition now, including Metrocab, a company that was unsuccessfully sued by LTC for copying the design of the TX4. A project by Nissan for a van-based taxi is currently on hold but might be revived at any time.

Geely therefore has decided to hedge its bets; the TX5 will be a “global product,” offered in other counties besides the United Kingdom. First up will be China where there is much demand for clean taxis. The TX5 will be made locally in a factory near Shanghai that currently produces a Chinese-market version of the TX4.

So who knows? The iconic London taxi might soon appear in your town in the near future.
