- Motorola Wins $21 Million Contract to Expand CDMA Digital Wireless System in Nigeria -

June 30, 2000 --
Intercellular Nigeria Ltd has awarded a $21 million contract to Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) for the supply and deployment of its CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) fixed wireless local loop network expansion.

Motorola`s Network Solutions Sector (NSS) will deploy its latest CDMA WiLL(R) infrastructure at 800 MHz to provide an expanded system capacity for up to 45,000 limited mobility subscribers. The equipment will be deployed to provide capacity and coverage in the major cities of Abuja, Onitsha, Kano and Kaduna and will expand the existing networks in Lagos and Port Harcourt. Intercellular Nigeria Limited is a national wireless telecommunications operator and plans to expand to additional cities and towns over the next year.

The agreement, which was signed between Gene O`Rourke, Motorola Vice President and General Manager for NSS in the Middle East and Africa, and Mallam Bashir Ahmad el-Rufai, Intercellular President and CEO, was described by both as "mutual and complementary". Mr. El-Rufai said: "With the support of Motorola, we expect to expand the scope of telecommunications services beyond the commercial capitals of Nigeria and broaden our exceptional wireless service to the local centers. I am extremely pleased to announce this major milestone."

Gene O`Rourke said: "This is the success story of a vision that has been carefully laid out for effective development and growth. We look forward to the growth of this partnership in our combined effort to develop the Nigeria cellular market through a technology that is proven, reliable and cost effective to deploy. Superior network design and excellent system quality have been and will remain the Motorola standard." Motorola has worked with Intercellular since 1996, when the initial contract was signed to provide a WiLL(R) system for Lagos.

To date, Motorola NSS has been awarded 34 contracts to supply cellular and wireless local loop infrastructure equipment in 23 African countries.

Motorola is a global leader in providing integrated communications solutions and embedded electronics solutions. Sales in 1999 were $33.1 billion.

Der Kurs von 30.3125 ist nachbörslich durch ein Volumen von lächerlichen 100 Stück zustande gekommen (18:09). Um 17:59
sind 238700 zu 29.0625 über den Tisch gegangen. Der momentane $$$ Kurs liegt also bei knapp 29$. Somit sind 30.70€ fast schon
zu viel... Leider - es schaut nicht sonderlich gut aus. Ich für meinen Teil lege erst wieder unter 30 nach - dann aber richtig...

Nun, ich würde gerne Eure Aufmerksamkeit auf die Seite 35 der Broschüre im .pdf - Format bringen = schaut Euch einmal alleine die Aussichten auf den potenziellen Markt von China an, wieviele Kunden dort erwartet werden (WAHNSINN), und gerade dort baut MOTOROLA derzeit seine Marktpräsenz aus - bei den derzeitigen Erfolgen wird MOT auch weiterhin zu Auftägen in der Region herangezogen werden!

Zur Erinnerung:
Meldung vom 26. Juni 2000:

Motorola erhöht seine Präsenz in China. Durch einen 53-Millionen US-Dollar-Vertrag mit Zhejiang Mobile Communications Corp. erhält das Unternehmen Zugang zu Chinas größtem Mobilfunkmarkt, der Zhejiang Provinz.

Der Vertrag, in den auch die chinesische Eastcom involviert ist, beinhaltet die Einrichtung eines 1.800 Mhz GSM-Netzes mit großflächiger Abdeckung in fünf Städten der Provinz.

Interessant finde ich auch (im Zusammenhang mit der heutigen Meldung von TELEKOM Malaysia) die Mobile Internet Exchange Platform www.motorola.com/mix - hat hier jemand nähere Infos zu diesem Projekt?

Hat von Euch gestern abend jemand N-TV gekuckt? Habt Ihr den CEO von Metabox im Interview gehört?

Hab ich das richtig verstanden, dass Motorola der Chip-Lieferant von Metabox für deren Set-Top-Boxen ist. Wurde das von Motorola selbst schon einmal so bestätigt? So wie Metabox derzeit mit Millionen-Verträgen um sich wirft, wäre das doch eine Ad-Hoc von Motorola wert gewesen, oder?

Lasst mich bitte nicht dumm sterben!

@Demian, ich kann Dir auch keine Antwort darauf geben, vielleicht jemand anders hier?
Nur - selbst wenn es so ist, sollte man die Dimensionen nicht aus dem Auge verlieren. Ich glaub nicht, daß das für ein Unternehmen mit einer Marktkapitalisierung von 65 MRD $ eine Ad-hoc wert sein wird.

Ihr habt ja beide recht! Ist mir schon klar, dass die Anzahl der Chips, die da an Metabox verkauft werden, eher Penuts sind. Trotzdem haben gestern sehr viele N-TV gekuckt, da das Interview mit dem CEO von Metabox angekündigt war. Viele haben also mitgekriegt, dass Motorola im Gespräch ist, und viele werden sich über Motorola informiert haben und müssten doch feststellen, dass hier ein absolutes Schnäppchen zu machen ist, oder? Bei der von Neemann erwähnten Marktkapitalisierung von 65 MRD $ ist der Kurs doch ein Witz!

Aber warum geht dann nix?

Na ja, wir werden sehen.

Hier einige Gründe:

1.) Iridium-Pleite psychologisch noch nicht verdaut.

2.) Befürchtete Gewinnminimierung durch hohe Kosten beim Aufbau der UMTS-Netze.

3.) Handys eher im höherpreisigen Bereich

4.) Everybodys Darlings Nokia und Ericsson sind bislang ohne starke Kursrücksprüne und daher favorisiert.

Zu Deinem N-TV Thema:
Wen interesssiert es in America, wo der Kurs gemacht wird, was uns Deutsche interessiert??? gestern wurden in den USA 486 Mio Stück gehandelt, in BRD heute gerade mal schlappe 2 Mio (0,4%).

Sonst hast Du aber natürlich absolut recht:
MOTOROLA IST EIN SCHNÄPPCHEN, es braucht nur ein bischen Geduld, bis aus der Unterbewertung wieder eine faire wird.

Was mit an MOT gefällt ist:
1.) Alles negative ist bereits eingepreist
2.) Wesentlich stärker diversifiziert als andere
3.) Allein zur Bewertung von Infineon (nur für den Chip-Bereich 46 MRD) betrachtet macht MOT schon Spaß auf mehr
4.) MOT ist in China, wo die anderen noch hinwollen

Die Ausdauernden werden MOT bei 60 sehen, spätestens in 1 1/2 Jahren.

hallo mot-freunde!!
es sieht so aus als sollte unsere geduldt sich so langsam auszahlen.
fakt ist das sich unser mot-baby trotz einiger widrigkeiten ganz gut gehalten hat.im gegensatz zu den letzten tagen hat mot an der nyse die gewinne des tages endlich mal in`s ziel retten können!!!
ich denke die durststrecke sollte so langsam ausgestanden sein.
endgültige entwarnung kann noch nicht gegeben werden, aber es sieht nun eher positiv aus was die richtung betrifft.(richtung norden).
wenn die nächsten tage der aufwärtstrend anhält, ist nach oben wieder alles möglich.wichtig ist das die anleger in amerika wieder vertrauen haben.was hier in frankfurt passiert ist nun mal zweitrangig.
was das kursziel ende des jahes angeht bin ich sehr optimistisch.
dezember sollten 50$ realistisch sein.!!!
das auftragsbuch ist prall gefüllt.(china,brasilien,usw...)wenn jetzt noch positive quartalszahlen nachgelegt würden können wir an weihnachten ne dicke socke aufhängen.

Bin ganz Deiner Meinung, langsam scheint es richtig loszugehen :-) .

Ganz nebenbei bemerkt: Gestern wurde Domeyer von Met(a)box auf NTV
befragt, wie er die hohen Stückzahlen liefern könnte, worauf er
antwortete daß es kein Problem wäre und der Hauptzuliefer für die
Chips Motorola sei.

Ist natürlich bei der Marktkapitalisierung von MOT nicht unbedingt
kursrelevant aber man sieht eben, wo sie überall dabei sind.

Motorola: A Biotech Player?

Motorola has entered the biotechnology industry, and late yesterday it signed a deal with Minnesota-based SurModics, a firm specializing in biochips. While a seemingly unusual move for a company best known for mobile phones, it signals that Motorola is a biotech believer.

Late yesterday, Motorola (NYSE: MOT) put out a press release announcing that it had inked a licensing and development deal with biotechnology firm SurModics (Nasdaq: SRDX) . Motorola will pay SurModics at least $25 million and in return will have exclusive rights to SurModics` Photolink technology to use in developing its biochips. As part of the deal, Motorola will also invest an undisclosed sum into SurModics.

I don`t know about you, but I`m filing this one under "You learn something new every day." A longtime follower of the company who even has several friends that work for the wireless giant, I thought I had a fairly good grasp on what Motorola did -- mobile phones, pagers, networking equipment, semiconductors, that sort of thing. But biotechnology? Hmmm....

According to Motorola`s press release, here`s what the company had to say about this business unit:

"Motorola BioChip Systems was established in 1998 to develop products which enable the delivery of better healthcare through the understanding and practical application of genomics. The business unit is currently developing a family of biochip products and services for research and diagnostic applications. The products under development at Motorola BioChip Systems will enable scientists and healthcare professionals to quickly and accurately analyze the DNA, RNA and proteins in living cells. In the future, the outcomes from this work will lead to the delivery of faster and more individualized healthcare."

In the near future, I somehow doubt people will be counting Amgen (Nasdaq: AMGN) and Celera (NYSE: CRA) among Motorola`s competitors. Nevertheless, this piece of news signals two things to me.

First, companies are free to enter whatever industries and business lines they so choose, even ones that are totally opposite from what they are currently competing in. Second, the fact that Motorola has devoted significant resources into a new biotechnology unit signals that they believe the sector holds a great deal of promise. I can`t disagree with that.

Earnings Talk Gets Motorola and Yahoo! Options Moving

With earnings season right around the corner, options traders were girding themselves Friday for big moves in bellwether technology names.

Options action shows the market is preparing for big swings in names such as Yahoo! (YHOO:Nasdaq - news) and Motorola (MOT:NYSE - news), both of which are slated to report earnings early next week. Yahoo! shares took a hit Friday following a Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown downgrade, slipping 6 3/16, or 5.1%, to 116 3/16. Motorola was holding steady, up 3/4, or 2.3%, at 32 3/4.

Options traders use a measure called implied volatility to gauge expected movement in a stock. When market makers raise implied volatility, they are expecting bigger movement in the underlying securities` price, either up or down. Implied volatility readings often rise ahead of an earnings report.

Implied volatility in Yahoo!`s July 115 options was around 81-82 Friday, up from Thursday`s preopen reading of 73-74, said Paul Foster of 1010WallStreet.com in Chicago.

Yahoo! August 125 out-of-the-money calls were active, with 4,515 contracts trading on the CBOE, compared with open interest of 839 contracts as of Thursday`s close. Open interest refers to the number of contracts in existence. The calls were trading down 3 ($300) to 8 1/4 ($825). The source of the volume could be traders selling the calls to collect premium on the hope that the options expire worthless.

Motorola`s implied volatility was also higher ahead of its earnings report, which is slated to be released next week. Foster said implied volatility on the out-of-the-money July 33 3/8 calls was 63-64, while it was 62 for the puts, up from yesterday`s reading of 55-56.

Meanwhile, the CBOE volatility index, which is used by traders as a measure of anxiety in the market, dropped sharply Friday in the wake of a market-friendly June employment report. The index, better known as the VIX, had surged in recent sessions ahead of the jobs report.

sich so etwas üblicherweise auf die Kurse aus?

Bin zwar wirklich kein Profi, aber wenn man sich die nachbörslichen Umsätze anguckt, kann dies als ganz guter Indikator genommen werden, ob der Kurs am nächsten Tag aufgrund einer Meldung anzieht...

Bei MOT waren die nachbörslichen Umsätze eher mau: 255700 Stück
in der Spitze fast 34$, zum Schluß dann wieder 33$...

Motorola vereinbart mit China Unicom zehn Verträge im Wert von 300 Mio USD

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS (dpa-AFX) - Der Sektor Netzwerk-Lösungen der Motorola Inc MOT.NYS hat mit der China Unicom CUNCF.NAP zehn Verträge zur Erweiterung eines digitalen GSM-Mobilfunk-Netzes abgeschlossen. Wie das Unternehmen am Montag mitteilte. Das Auftrags-Volumen betrage über 300 Mio. USD.

Gemäß den Verträgen solle Motorola das GSM 900-Mobilfunknetz der China Unicom in acht wichtigen chinesischen Provinzen erweitern. An den Verträgen seien zu 20% die China Eastern Communications Co Ltd und die Quangzhou Jinpeng Group Co beteiligt./av/ub
