Grandmass sees profit despite bad start to year

Grandmass Enterprise Solution expects to report profit for the year to December 31 despite posting a loss in the first months, according to chairman Patrick Yue Chung-wing.
The Growth Enterprise Market candidate had a loss of HK$608,000 in the first four months of the year on turnover of HK$3.21 million.

Mr Yue said results for the computer software and information-service provider in the period were hit by a lack of demand. Many companies had suspended spending on software in the final quarter last year to the first quarter this year, he said. Demand picked up in the second quarter.

Grandmass has not made a profit forecast for the full year. Last year, the company had a profit of HK$2.65 million.

Grandmass sells enterprise resource planning (ERP) software systems to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The company estimates more than 90 per cent of the SMEs in Hong Kong are not using integrated computer systems. According to International Data, demand for ERP software in Greater China is expected to grow to US$717 million in 2003 from US$138.2 million in 1998, an average annual growth rate of 39 per cent.

The firm privately placed 119.15 million shares at 50 cents each last month to raise HK$59.58 million. Trading of shares on the GEM is to start on Friday.
