StockerYale to Construct New Facility to Produce Fiber Optic Preforms; Development of New Facility Will House New Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition Systems
Business Wire - September 05, 2000 08:47
SALEM, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 5, 2000--StockerYale, Inc., (NASDAQ: STKR), a leading provider of optical components and specialized illumination products, today announces the purchase of three Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD) systems for an undisclosed amount that will be housed in a new facility specifically designed to support these systems. The new facility will be located next to its Salem, New Hampshire corporate headquarters. This strategic initiative represents the company`s largest capital expenditure in its history. The MCVD systems are exclusively designed for the production of fiber optic preforms that are comprised of advanced glasses and specific dopants, allowing for the fabrication of specialty optical fiber that has intrinsic photonic functions.
"The purchase of these MCVD systems also includes state-of-the-art fiber characterization and optical measuring equipment that will allow us to become a fully integrated manufacturer of specialty optical fiber," said Alain Beauregard, president and chief technology officer. "The photonic qualities of specialty optical fiber are a direct result of the optical characteristics fabricated into the preform. With the MCVD systems we will have the ability to not only produce leading-edge specialty optical fiber but will have the ability to develop custom-tailored specialty optical fiber for our customers," added Beauregard.
"This action by the company is representative of our desire to become a leader in providing primary, enabling optical components and specialty fiber to the optical communications industry," said Mark W. Blodgett, StockerYale`s chairman and chief executive officer. Blodgett added, "the purchase of these MCVD systems provides the company with the capacity to design and manufacture preforms along with the ability to draw its own specialty optical fiber."
