Press Release
OpenTV Confirms It has Signed an Agreement With UPC to Launch Interactive Television for Direct-To-Home Platforms in Central Europe Using OpenTV Software
First launch planned by Wizja TV in Poland will be extended to Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 10, 2000-- OpenTV (Nasdaq:OPTV - news; AEX:OPTV), the leading worldwide provider of software that enables digital interactive television, today confirmed that it has signed an agreement to provide United Pan-Europe Communications (UPC) (Nasdaq:UPCOY - news; AEX:UPC), the largest broadband network provider in Europe, with software solutions to support UPC`s Direct-To-Home satellite television service subsidiary.
Interactive television service launches are planned by UPC throughout Central Europe, initially launching to Wizja TV subscribers in Poland, followed by Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic during 2001.
Poland is the third largest Direct-To-Home television environment in Europe with 2.2 million subscribers (European TV Markets Report 2000). The agreement with OpenTV gives UPC the opportunity to use interactive television services to drive the development of Direct-To-Home broadcast services across Central Europe`s rapidly changing television market.
Using OpenTV`s highly scalable OpenStreamer(TM) applications launcher, UPC plans to generate and uplink multiple applications across Central Europe using its UPC Broadcast Centre located at the Maidstone Studios, UK.
OpenTV`s interactive television platform will enable Wizja TV to launch a suite of OpenTV applications, including enhanced electronic program guides, weather, games, enhanced sports, or even a complete ``TVPortal`` for its subscribers.
``This agreement to implement OpenTV with Wizja/UPC is a natural extension of our relationship with UPC as we`ve proven many times that OpenTV is a world leader in the deployment of ITV services as we have the resources and deep experience to get networks launched,`` said James Ackerman, president and COO of OpenTV.
``Working with a market leader like UPC has provided OpenTV with what we expect to be yet another major deployment in Europe, as we continue to work toward our ultimate goal of building significant value for our customers, business partners and shareholders.``
