ID Biomedical Could Turn a Profit This Year on New Licenses
By Karen Fessler
Vancouver, Sept. 27 (Bloomberg) -- ID Biomedical Corp., a Canadian biotechnology company, expects to license its gene analysis technology to more companies by year`s end, which could help it turn a profit this year, its president said.
The Vancouver-based company has already licensed the technology to three companies, including PE Corp.`s PE Biosystems Group. The company`s technology offers scientists a way to identify gene sequences that might aid them in diagnosing and treating diseases.
The technology, called cycling probe signal amplification, is faster and less expensive than conventional methods, such as the widely used polymerase chain reaction, said Dr. Anthony Holler, ID Biomedical`s president.
``What`s becoming important (to researchers) is having inexpensive, rapid, automated systems for detecting specific gene sequences,`` Holler told the Bloomberg Forum.
Polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, is ``expensive and not easy to use,`` Holler said. ``That`s the main technology that`s in the marketplace today and we believe that signal amplification will supplant some of the uses of PCR.``
ID Biomedical received an upfront payment of $5 million when it licensed the technology to PE Biosystems and expects to receive a similar amount for each new license. It will also receive royalties on sales of products developed using the technology, he said.
``We expect that we`ll sign more of these types of licenses,`` Holler said. ``We`ll possibly do two this year and several more next year. We view this as contributing to the bottom line already.`` He added that the company could be profitable this year if it secures more licensing agreements.
The company lost $7 million on $327,100 in revenue last year. For the first six months of this year, it earned $118,400 on revenue of $4.4 million.
Vaccines Against Infections
ID Biomedical is also developing vaccines against infections such as the throat infection caused by streptococci germs, and HIV.
The company`s streptococcus A vaccine is in the first of three phases of trials generally required for U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval. ID Biomedical expects the vaccine to reach the market in 2005 or 2006 if it wins approval, Holler said.
Holler said no streptococcus vaccines are currently on the market. Companies have had difficulty developing the vaccines in the past because they were too toxic.
``We use modern biotechnology tools to cut the toxic part out of the organism and use only the part that stimulates the immune system,`` he said.
The company is ``the only group in the world with a vaccine in clinical trials for group A streptococcus,`` Holler said.
ID Biomedical completed one trial of the vaccine at a low dose and is now studying it at higher doses to determine whether it`s safe, he said.
