Nortel gets $320 million deal with Deutsche Telekom
TORONTO, Dec 21 (Reuters) - Nortel Networks Corp. <NT.N> said on Thursday that it would supply $320 million worth of wireless infrastructure equipment to a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom <DTEGn.DE> to build a high-speed next generation mobile phone network that will be operational in 2002.
The contract with T-Mobile International marks Nortel`s fourth next generation mobile contract win in Europe this year for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System networks.
More than 40 UMTS equipment contracts are expected to be awarded over the next few months as carriers follow through on licenses awarded in recent auctions.
UMTS is a high-speed network format that will give cellular phone and mobile device users high-speed access to e-mail, video and other services that require high bandwidth capacity.
Nortel will deploy core network solutions and radio access infrastructure for T-Mobile`s planned UMTS network as well as services that include field trials of T-Mobile`s network.
"This is another sign that the marketplace is embracing our Wireless Internet strategy, and a great way to crown our UMTS success in Europe this year," said Pascal Debon, Nortel president of Europe, Middle East and Africa, in a statement. The contract brings Nortel`s total UMTS contract awards to more than $2.1 billion in 2000 with Britain`s BT Cellnet, Spain`s Airtel and Xfera and AT&T Wireless <AWE.N> in the U.S. all choosing the Canadian network equipment maker for their next generation networks. ($1=$1.52 Canadian)
