Easy Television to be launched in Australia

Sydney - Australian interactive television pioneers Total Television Australia Limited (TTA) today announced the launch of their television on demand service, Easy Television, which will be deployed over TransACT`s broadband network.

For $40 per month, subscribers will be able to access all Easy Television services, including movies on demand, music on demand, home shopping, broadcast pay TV, Internet on TV and email on TV. Classic movies on demand will be available for $4 and Premier movies for $6 on a pay per view basis.

The service will be offered to TransACT`s Canberra subscribers from 30 June 2001. The plan to connect 100,000 homes by 2002 is the largest IP based interactive television platform for one of the largest deployments of on demand services in the world. The rollout will start with 9 suburbs in Canberra.

Easy Television has already signed programming deals for the Australian market with top content providers including BBC Worldwide, TransWorld International, the world`s largest sports content provider, and asSeenonScreen.com, the only site in the world that lets you buy what you see in film and TV. Other content agreements are expected to follow shortly.

Launching the service and the Easy Television brand in Australia, Thomas Kressner, Chairman and Chief Executive of Yes Television, said: "Easy Television will use TransACT`s state-of-the-art network to deliver a service at the forefront of broadband entertainment. Easy Television will allow complete, easily navigable control from free-to-air to pay TV to true video-on-demand, where viewers select and watch their programmes in an instant, and rewind or fast-forward programs like a videotape, with unlimited plays."

Richard Vincent, Chief executive of TransACT Capital Communications commented, "Easy Television is the most exciting thing to happen to television since its inception. Together, we will be deploying one of the world`s most revolutionary entertainment and communications service to Australia. This world-leading venture exploits the enormous potential of the TransACT broadband network and gives television viewers flexibility to watch what they want, when they want the control is firmly in the hands of the viewer."

Total Television Australia Executive Director, Mr Geoff Babidge said, "We`re very enthusiastic to be pioneering this revolutionary technology to Australian subscribers on such a grand scale. Australia is well known for its enthusiasm for, and early adoption of new technology so it should be no surprise that we are at the forefront of global commercial deployment of this service."

Videos on demand for Canberra`s interactive homes

      By Margot Saville

Canberra subscribers to an interactive television trial will be able to access video-on-demand services from early next year.

Broadband network TransACT Capital Communications has signed Total Television Australia to provide content to its service, which will be offered to more than 100,000 homes and businesses throughout the ACT.

Earlier this week a similar content deal was struck with Access1.

Total`s Mr Geoff Babidge said yesterday the company`s strategy was to "leverage much of the existing telecommunications infrastructure that is available in Australia such as ADSL and fibre optic cables to deliver our services to the home".

Total is a joint venture between Cable & Telecoms and the British interactive television company Yes Television.

Total`s Mr Geoff Babidge declined to say how much the trial would cost.

The cost of dialling up the videos would be "comparable with renting them from a video store" according to a TransACT spokeswoman.

Neither would be drawn on exactly what movies would be available, saying instead that they were still "finalising agreements with major Hollywood studios" over content.

In Britain Yes Television broadcasts content from studios Warner Bros, Sony and Disney, as well as sports programming from TransWorld International and television programming from Channel 4, Pearsons and Itel.

However, as all film and television programming is sold on a strictly national basis, it does not necessarily mean Australian subscribers will receive this content.

The two companies are also planning to introduce Internet, email and e-commerce on standard television sets.

Again, there is no date for when these services will be available, or how much they will cost the subscriber.

A recent report by merchant bank Goldman Sachs said the broad adoption of interactive television in Australia would not happen for at least five years.

The only other truly two-way interactive television service in this country is being trialled by ICE Interactive. It is going into 150 homes in the regional NSW town of Orange.

Spekulieren kann man viel, aber wozu?

"The two devices capable of connecting to the TransACT network at this stage are a broadband modem (supplied by Marconi) and a digital set-top box or STB (supplied by Motorola)."

Muß man da jetzt -aufgrund der dargelegten Gemeinsamkeiten und Zufälle- unangenehme Umkehrschlüsse in Richtung GB ziehen...?

      @ Lesa

      Gruss OMT
