Bei Portman Ltd. wird man z.Z. weder mit Kursgewinnen noch mit neuen Nachrichten verwöhnt. Eben habe ich das aktuellste Statement (vom 07.12.2001!!!) bei Portman gefunden:

PORTMAN EYES PROCESSING OPTIONS FOR HIGH-PHOSPHOROUS IRON ORE

PLANS TO TEST DOWNSTREAM PROCESS USING LIGNITE FROM SALMON GUMS

Portman Limited (ASX: PMM) has announced an early-stage initiative to investigate downstream processing options for its high-phosphorous iron ore resources at Koolyanobbing in the production of iron by utilising a large lignite deposit at Salmon Gums, 100 kilometres north of Esperance.

The Perth-based iron ore group has entered into an agreement with the Pacific Edge Holdings Pty Ltd group, headed by Sir Roderick Carnegie, to carry out tests on the Salmon Gums deposit, which is currently held by the O’Sullivans Group, to process high-phosphorous iron ore using lignite as a reductant through to iron metal.

Agreement has been reached for the Company to farm into the Salmon Gums deposit, with the right to acquire up to an 80% interest through a series of staged payments. The initial commitment involves expenditure of $1 million to fund the cost of first stage test work, which will give Portman a 20% interest in the deposit. The Salmon Gums tenements have the potential to contain a lignite resource of up to 2 billion tonnes.

Portman’s Managing Director, Dr Ian Burston, said the initiative was part of the Company’s strategy of developing business opportunities which were complementary to its flagship iron ore operations in Western Australia.

“This could also lead to the development of a downstream processing industry which would commercialise the currently out-of-sales specification high phosphorous iron ore produced at Koolyanobbing, adding significant value to our WA iron ore business,” Dr Burston said.

Lignite is a low-quality coal with a high moisture content which, after being upgraded, can be used as a reductant in iron metal production.

Portman has for some time been reviewing options for marketing this high phosphorous material, both lump and fines, from Koolyanobbing. Given the quantities of this material expected to become available during the expansion of the project, this represents an exciting commercial opportunity. The CSIRO, who have been working with the Pacific Edge Group over the last two years, will be conducting laboratory-scale tests on samples of 900kg of lignite from Salmon Gums and 600kg of high-phosphorous ore from Koolyanobbing to determine if the process is feasible.

Dr Burston said that if the laboratory-scale tests were successful, the process would then move to pilot plant testing on a further sample of 3,000 tonnes of each commodity to be carried out at a facility in Victoria. “These tests will be carried out during 2002,” he said. “If the first pilot plant stage is successful, a second stage of testing will be undertaken over a further period of up to two years aimed at commercialisation of the process.”

Should this prove positive for commercialisation, it is anticipated that the process will be carried out in Western Australia,” he said.
