Sino-i.com To Use IBM Software
HONG KONG (AP) - A Hong Kong group said Monday it will use software from International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM - news) Corp. for an electronic-commerce Web site targeting small- and medium-sized businesses in mainland China.
Sino-i.com Ltd. expects to have its Chinese-language site fully operational by the third quarter of 2000. Company officials estimated that the site could generate $1 billion wholesale transactions this year.
Chinese companies will be able to use the ChinaEnterprise.com site to shop for more than 15,000 products ranging from clothing to tractors, executives said Monday. The site will include a database of 600,000 mainland Chinese enterprises, said the Internet content provider`s chief executive, P.H. Yu.
Yu said his company will invest approximately $12.8 million in the Web site over the next year to 18 months. The Hong Kong group hopes to profit by charging mainland Chinese customers a transaction fee of up to 3 percent on purchases.
IBM, based in Armonk, New York, and Sino-i.com did not reveal the terms of their software deal. _
