Web hosting company Exodus Communications (EXDS:Nasdaq - news - boards) announced slightly better than expected first-quarter earnings on Thursday.

Net loss, excluding goodwill amortization and other charges, was $42.3 million, or 23 cents a share, 3 cents ahead of the consensus estimate of analysts polled by Thomson/First Call. Including goodwill and one-time charges, net loss for the quarter was $58.4 million, or 32 cents a share, compared to a net loss of $52.9 million, or 30 cents a share, in the fourth quarter of 1999, and a net loss of $23.2 million, or 14 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.
The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company said net revenue was $134.1 million, a 346% increase over the year-ago quarter and a 32% increase over the previous quarter. For the first time, Exodus posted an EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) profit.

"Given that they launched six new IDCs [Internet Data Centers] in the last two quarters, EBITDA profit shows very good management," said Wit SoundView analyst Marlowe Burke. Wit SoundView hasn`t done any underwriting for Exodus.

"32% revenue growth for a company of this size is very good," Burke added.

      Keeping the faith with Exodus

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Faith is fleeting during disquieting times. Investors have shifted gears from so-called new-economy stocks to old economy back to, uh... new economy. In many cases, with good reason.

Yet, those who`ve kept the faith in Exodus Communications, have reason to evangelize after the new-economy company reported yet another quarter beaming with solid results. See full story.

Sure, quarterly sales slowed down from the 40-plus percent quarter-over-quarter pace set in the past 13 quarters. But the company did turn cash flow positive for the first time, while turning in sequential growth of 32 percent on sales north of $100 million.

"If you`re generating over $100 million a quarter and you`re growing well over 20-percent plus -- that`s impressive," said Richard Juarez, an e-commerce infrastructure analyst at BancBoston Robertson Stephens.

It was just last summer -- ages ago in Internet time -- that Exodus was a mere $3.7 billion company. Exodus was bite-sized, as I called it. Yet, Ellen Hancock, the company`s steadfast chief executive officer, convinced me that she wouldn`t be bullied around, even as I received calls from Intel (INTC: news, msgs) that it was serious about getting into the Web hosting space.

I even pressed her (back then) about whether she`d entertain any suitors, in light of the increasingly competitive landscape. "We`ll remain independent," she said.

And independence has been a good thing. The former IBM executive has nurtured this company into a Web hosting behemoth valued at $26 billion. And to this day, I still believe: there`s no bullying Ellen or Exodus.

"She has a tremendous amount of experience in the networking industry and she`s making this company a vendor for complete end-to-edge outsourcing for content and application management and distribution services," said David Levy, an analyst at Chase H&Q.

Exodus has had a sterling record of posting 13 consecutive quarters of 40-plus percent sequential revenue growth. In the latest quarter, Exodus increased quarterly sales to $134.1 million, up 32 percent sequentially.

Much of that success is due to the company`s growing customer list and revenue per customer, said John Hodulik, an analyst at PaineWebber. Exodus added six customers every day in the fourth quarter. That`s three times more than the number of customers Exodus was adding daily back in June.

In its most recent quarter, Exodus added 545 new customers to bring its total customer count to 2,830. And average annualized revenue per customer rose to $220,000 from $196,000 during the same period a year ago.

      Focus

And there doesn`t appear to be any sign of the company losing market share.

An IDC report released in April said that in 1999, Exodus had market share of 9.3 percent in the Web hosting market. Verio (VRIO: news, msgs) had 7.6 percent; Exodus` biggest competitor, Global Center, a unit of Global Crossing, (Global Crossing purchased Frontier Corp., the parent company of Global Center) had 5.9 percent; IBM (IBM: news, msgs) Global Services had 5.4 percent; UUNet, a unit of MCI Worldcom (WCOM: news, msgs), had 4.4 percent; Qwest Communications (QWST: news, msgs) had 3.9 percent; Digex (DIGX: news, msgs) had 3.3 percent; Genuity, formerly called GTE Internetworking, a unit of GTE (GTE: news, msgs) had 2.7 percent.

"Exodus singleness of focus is a huge advantage and that`s often underrated," said Hodulik.

But the aforementioned batch will be honing in on the Web hosting space as several have plans to issue tracking stocks or IPOs.

Qwest Communications management suggested that it might issue a tracking stock for its Web hosting and application service provider business, called Cyber.Solutions. Global Crossing also plans to issue a tracking stock for GlobalCenter. GTE said it`s planning an initial public offering for Genuity to satisfy regulatory issues regarding GTE`s merger with Bell Atlantic.

"The fact that these companies are breaking these businesses out into separate units underscores that this business isn`t just growing fast but that it has tremendous economics," said Hodulik.

BancBoston`s Juarez predicts that there will be demand for between 45 and 55 million square feet of hosting space by fiscal year 2002. Currently, there is less than 25 million square feet of hosting space. That demand imbalance suggests that growth is intact. Some may be skeptical about the 50 million number Juarez came up with, but he stands by his methodology.

He predicts that there will be 8.5 million businesses (with about 50 employees on average) in the U.S. that could use some kind of hosting environment. The amount of space they`d realistically need would be about 15 to 25 square feet. If 40 percent of these businesses outsourced their hosting requirements, that would require about 50 million in hosting space.

What does that mean for Exodus, the largest provider with the most expertise in the space? A premium valuation, many analysts and investors said. Is that too much to ask for a company that owns a strategic point of the Internet as computing and telecommunications converge? That`s for investors to decide.

While it`s difficult to compare Exodus on an apples-to-apples basis with the large players in the Web hosting and managed services industry, against the pure-play Web hosting companies, Exodus does appear to sporting a slight premium.

E*OFFERING Upgrades Exodus Communications, Inc. (EXDS) from a Buy to a Strong Buy Rating
SAN FRANCISCO, April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is being issued by E*OFFERING, a member of the National Association of Securities Dealers, CRD Number 036717.

E*OFFERING, a leading Internet investment bank, announced Thursday the upgrade of Exodus Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXDS) (STRONG BUY, $107-11/16) from a BUY to a STRONG BUY rating. Principal and Senior E-Nabling Solution Providers Analyst Christine Nairne upgraded her rating following the company`s Q1:00 earnings report.

"Exodus reported an outstanding Q1:00, with revenues of $134.1 million -- beating our estimate of $131.8 million, and EPS of ($0.23), which beat our estimate of ($0.24), excluding amortization and one-time debt conversion expense," Nairne said. "While we anticipated that Exodus would head toward EBITDA profitability in the first quarter, the magnitude of nearly $2 million in positive EBITDA was a pleasant surprise. We believe this is serious evidence that the Exodus model is coming to fruition as a viable, profitable business over the long term. Further, we believe the timing to be perfect, as investors are suddenly demanding a clear path to profitability."

Nairne added, "We are raising our estimates for the remainder of FY00 to reflect the positive trends in Exodus` business model. We believe that in coming quarters all key metrics will continue their upward course."

Robertson Stephens Reiterates Buy Rating and Raises Estimates on EXDS
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 24, 2000--Robertson Stephens Managing Director and Senior eCommerce Services Analyst Rick Juarez reiterated his Buy rating and raised estimates on Exodus Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:EXDS). Headquartered in Santa Clara, California, Exodus is one of the leading business centric providers of Internet systems and network management solutions for companies seeking to outsource the hosting of their mission critical Internet operations.
"Exodus reported strong first quarter 2000 revenues of $134.1 million, surpassing our estimates by $0.9 million or 0.7 percent," said Juarez. "Meanwhile, earnings-per-share of ($0.23) beat our estimate and the consensus estimate by $0.02 and $0.03 respectively."

"We believe that Exodus is one of the leading contenders in a new category that we term the Internet Utility Platform or IUP provider, which tightly integrates the access and hosting components," said Juarez.

"Exodus reported better-than-expected gross margins and positive EBITDA, which we believe are testimony to the strength of the Exodus model," said Juarez. "We believe long-term gross margin improvements will be driven by contribution from higher margin managed services and improved economies of sale. Yet, we believe that short-term gross profits will reflect costs associated with the company`s accelerated buildout schedule."

"In our opinion, Exodus continues to differentiate itself from its competitors, " said Juarez. "We are raising fiscal 2000 revenues to $780.5 million from $752.9 million and fiscal year 2001 revenues to $1.65 billion from $1.4 billion. We reiterate our Buy recommendation and price target of $245."

Monday April 24, 1:40 pm Eastern Time
TRADE IDEA-Chase calls Internet bonds "strong buy"
NEW YORK, April 24 (Reuters) - Following a recent selloff, bonds issued by Internet companies represent a ``strong buy`` for high-yield, or junk, bond investors seeking total return and stable current income, Chase Securities Inc. said in a report dated April 18.

Chase specifically recommended overweighting debt from Internet/Data companies, specifically Exodus Communications Inc. (NasdaqNM:EXDS - news), Globix Corp. (NasdaqNM:GBIX - news), PSINet Inc. (NasdaqNM:PSIX - news) and Verio Inc. (NasdaqNM:VRIO - news).

``In our opinion, strong growth prospects, combined with recent market technicals, have created a number of opportunities to purchase Internet/data bonds, which we believe will outperform the overall market,`` Chase said.

Chase said four factors powered the Internet/data sector higher in 1999: (1) rapid growth in e-commerce; (2) positive fundamentals including triple-digit revenue growth, ``impressive`` gross margins and limited ``churn``; (3) rapid consolidation activity, and (4) strong equity valuations.

These factors, Chase said, should continue to propel the sector forward in 2000.

First, e-commerce and its potential ``is the single biggest factor driving the demand for high-speed networks and Web hosting services`` in telecommuniations. Recent announcements by leading automobile and aerospace firms to develop e-commerce infrastructure and on-line trading exchanges likely foreshadow similar activity in other industries.

That, Chase said, should contribute to compound annual growth in the Web hosting market of 87 percent through 2003, an ``extremely promising`` number for the best bonds in the sector.

Second, Internet/data fundamentals are the best of any telecom segment.

Chase said Exodus, Globix, PSINet and Verio posted revenue growth in their 1999 fiscal years of 64 to 357 percent, and should see compound annual growth of 50 to 100 percent through 2003. At the same time, Chase said such Web hosting companies should expand their already high margins yet suffer little churn, sometimes below 2 percent. ``Churn`` measures a company`s ability to retain customers.

Third, the sector`s wave of acquisition activity should continue. That activity, Chase said, ``adds strong speculative appeal to (Globix, PSINet and Verio) and their existing debt.`` Exodus, with a higher market capitalisation, is a less likely target, Chase said.

And finally, Chase said soaring stock valuations -- a combined 509 percent in 1999 -- have allowed Exodus, Globix, PSINet and Verio to use stock as currency for a variety of stock swap acquisitions. That allows them to expand their product offerings and enhances the outlook for their debt.

Chase recommended buying Exodus`s 11.25 percent notes due July 2008 and 10.75 percent notes due Dec. 2009, all rated B3 by Moody`s Investors Service and B-minus by Standard & Poor`s. The notes recently yielded 542 and 551 basis points (5.42 to 5.51 percentage points), respectively, more than comparable maturity U.S. Treasuries. The company`s ``strong operating performance and solid positioning`` make rating upgrades in the next 12 to 18 months likely, Chase said.

Chase recommended buying PSINet`s B3/B-minus rated 11 percent senior notes due Aug. 2009, which recently yielded 733 basis points more than Treasuries. Chase expects that spread to narrow 200 to 250 basis points over the next six months.

Chase called Verio`s B3/B-minus rated 11.25 percent senior notes due Dec. 2008, which recently yielded 582 basis points more than Treasuries, a ``compelling investment opportunity`` because of Verio`s ``strong fundamental, strategic and speculative appeal`` and in light of the notes` recent decline.

And finally, Chase also called Globix`s unrated 12.50 percent senior notes due 2010, which recently yielded 830 basis points more than Treasuries, a ``compelling investment opportunity.`` The company, Chase said, enjoys positive event risk over the next 12 to 24 months.

Robertson Stephens Reiterates Buy Rating on EXDS - Analyst Views Exodus as First Mover in New `IUP` Category -
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 27, 2000--Robertson Stephens Managing Director and Senior eCommerce Services Analyst Rick Juarez reiterated his Buy rating on Exodus Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:EXDS - news). Headquartered in Santa Clara, California, Exodus is one of the leading business centric providers of Internet systems and network management solutions for companies seeking to outsource the hosting of their mission critical Internet operations.

``Our analysis of the complex host market indicates that there may be a gap between supply and demand, and we estimate the gap may be as wide as two times,`` said Juarez. ``By the end of 2000, we believe there will be approximately 20 to 22 million square feet of supply. Based upon our internal analysis, we estimate that demand could exceed 50 million. Evidence supporting this imbalance can be seen by Exodus` previously announced price increases and acceleration in the build out plans from other market participants.``

``We have conducted an extensive analysis of the estimated availability of high quality, complex web hosting space,`` said Juarez. ``We will be tracking the space availability through a new Robertson Stephens Spacedex and will be monitoring the new index going forward.``

``Additionally, we believe that Exodus is a first mover in the new category of companies which we are calling IUPs or Internet Utility Providers which are developing highly engineered infrastructure solutions that tightly integrate and package access and hosting components,`` said Juarez. ``In our opinion, ASPs and perhaps ISVs will increasingly leverage IUPs to reduce the time to market for their respective solutions and increase quality.``

``We believe the recent pullback in the share price has created an attractive buying opportunity to invest in highly leverageable infrastructure solutions,`` said Juarez. ``We are maintaining estimates and reiterating our Buy recommendation.``

      Exodus joins "old economy" suitors
      By Rachel Konrad
      Staff Writer, CNET News.com
      May 9, 2000, 10:20 a.m. PT
Demand for high-end Web hosting services is expected to quadruple within three years as "old economy" companies incorporate the Internet into their business models, said R. Marshal Case, chief financial officer of Exodus Communications.

By 2003, the total market for Web hosting will reach $14.6 billion, with high-end services accounting for $4.6 billion. In 2000, the hosting market is expected to reach $3.5 billion, with high-end hosting accounting for about one-third.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based Exodus derived more than 50 percent of its 1999 revenue of $242 million from companies on the leading edge of Internet technology and e-commerce, such as Yahoo, eBay, Quote.com, Lycos and Pets.com. Less than half of its revenue came from traditional companies, such as Nordstrom, Merrill Lynch and USA Today.

But Exodus, which hosts more than 40 percent of the top 50 Web sites, according to research firm Media Metrix, expects about 80 percent of revenue within the next several years to come from old-economy companies.

Business-to-business (B2B) sites will account for less than half of Exodus` revenue, but the more complex B2B sites will take up more than half of the company`s available bandwidth.

"We`re expecting a major shift as traditional companies get online," Case said today at the Chase H&Q Technology Conference in San Francisco.

Case wasn`t the only executive at the widely followed tech expo to sing the praises of the old economy--a stark reversal from past conferences, where tech executives would brag about the revolution they were fomenting at the expense of the button-down world of smokestack industries and traditional retailers.

But as the Nasdaq slumps and new-economy companies watch their market capitalizations and even venture funding dry up, many technology companies are switching gears to court old-economy businesses, which typically enjoy stable valuations and large cash reserves.

According to Sun Microsystems chief financial officer Michael Lehman, about 90 percent of Sun revenue comes from Fortune 1000 companies eager to build their e-commerce divisions and bolster their Internet infrastructure. Only about 10 percent of revenue comes from Internet start-ups and Silicon Valley dot-coms.

According to Chase H&Q chairman and CEO Dan Case, public companies represented at the seminal Chase H&Q Technology Conference this week are trading about 40 percent lower than their 52-week highs. Case and other experts predict a shakeout in the technology sector that will give small players few choices other than to be acquired or to go out of business.

Exodus is among the Internet companies facing ferocious competition without the benefits of profits. According to Chase H&Q analyst David Levy, earnings per share are expected to be negative through 2001. The company is expected to lose 89 cents per share in 2000 and 5 cents per share in 2001.

"We believe that investors have been concerned with the perception that Exodus would be unable to exploit the opportunity for edge content-distribution services," read a Chase H&Q report on Exodus. "Furthermore, we believe that, in time, companies such as Akamai and Digital Island could pose a competitive threat to Exodus."

Exodus` CFO is aware of competitive threats but hopes to use the company`s market-leading position to lure new customers. As of March 2000, Exodus had more than 2,800 customers, generating annual revenue of $220,000 per account.

"That recognized leader position--it creates a pull to get new business, rather than just having to push to go out and get new customers," Case said.

Exodus Subsidiary Service Metrics Earns Top Award in Network Computing Review of Web Site Performance Monitoring Solutions
SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Exodus Communications(TM), Inc. (Nasdaq: EXDS - news), a leading provider of complex Internet hosting and managed services, announced today that its subsidiary, Service Metrics(TM), Inc., has been awarded the Network Computing Editor`s Choice award for Web performance monitoring.

In a comprehensive review of five Web site monitoring solutions, Service Metrics earned the top score and the Editor`s Choice award based on weighted scores for the following criteria: alerts, comparison/analysis, reporting/monitoring, price and ease-of-use. Exodus` Service Metrics SM-WEB solution was tested, reviewed and compared to offerings from Evity(TM), Freshwater Software®, Keynote Systems, Inc. and WebPartner(TM) in the April 17th edition of Network Computing magazine.

Each performance measurement service monitored the Network Computing Web site as well as two additional sites, Network World and InfoWorld, for one month. Evaluation of each service was based on the configuration of the monitors, the information gathered and the quality of the reports and e-mail alerts generated throughout the month. According to the report, Service Metrics` flexible and easy-to-use reporting and monitoring services propelled it to the top position.

``We are very pleased with the results of the Network Computing review,`` said Robert Merlo, vice president of marketing for the Service Metrics subsidiary of Exodus®. ``The high scores SM-WEB received affirms our position in the marketplace and signifies that we`ve succeeded in providing the highest level of accuracy and depth of performance measurement data in an easy-to-use interface. SM-WEB`s reporting features makes it an ideal solution for a broad range of e-business needs, from IT management to sales and executive management.``

      About SM-WEB

Exodus` SM-WEB monitoring service measures the performance of Web sites from the end-user perspective through its worldwide network of Data Collection Agents (DCAs). These agents are connected to the Internet via major backbone providers, representing the end-user by downloading Web pages through emulation of standard Netscape Navigator® or Microsoft® Internet Explorer(TM) browsers. Each agent in the network downloads URLs up to 15 times per hour, 24 hours a day. For each URL monitored, the full page and all the objects on that page (graphics, redirects, ads, frames, etc.) are downloaded. As the page and all the objects on it are being downloaded, Exodus` agent software measures each component of the download process (connect, response, DNS look-up times, etc.) to identify contributors to performance degradation.

Exodus expands data centers to meet demand
      By Bloomberg News
      May 25, 2000, 1:10 p.m. PT
BOSTON--Exodus Communications, one of the biggest managers of Internet sites, plans to expand its data centers to 36 from 20 by the end of the year to keep up with demand for its services, said chief executive Ellen Hancock.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company plans on adding data centers in Asia and Europe and will expand capacity at some of its current sites, Hancock said.

"We`ll also expand in cities where we already are in the U.S. because demand is so strong," Hancock told the Bloomberg Forum in Boston.

Exodus owns big buildings, called data centers, where it houses and manages hundreds of server computers that power Web sites for customers such as online auctioneer eBay. About half of its customers are what Hancock terms "dot-coms," or Internet-only businesses, while the remainder are companies that have opened Web sites to increase sales, for example.

Hancock expects that this year, about half of Exodus` customers will be enterprise companies with main businesses that aren`t Internet-related, although she said she couldn`t be more specific.

"Clearly, we`ll go over 50 percent" in terms of the number of enterprise customers, she said. "The question is if we`ll be in that 60 percent" range.

Exodus also is seeking to acquire companies for additional technology or to expand into new regions, she said. Hancock declined to name specific companies that Exodus is considering.

"We`re always looking at acquisitions," she said. "We`re looking at technology for performance. We`re looking at technology for monitoring."

"We continue to stress we`re addressing a lot of demand," Hancock said. "We hope that continues to strengthen the stock."

Yahoo, eBay, Inktomi, Siebel, Applied Materials... Außerdem hat man vielversprechende Partnerschaften mit z.B. Cisco, Sun und AT&T abgeschlossen.

Exodus Announces Streaming Media Performance Monitoring
Provides Objective, Quantifiable Metrics for Improved Media Performance
BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 12, 2000--Responding to the growing need to measure and optimize streaming Web content performance levels, Exodus Communications(TM), Inc. subsidiary Service Metrics has added Streaming Media Performance Monitoring to its award-winning SM-WEB measurement offering. Expected to be available in Q3 2000, this new capability will provide an unprecedented level of visibility into streaming media performance to companies that provide the content and infrastructure necessary to satisfy the growing demand for online multimedia.

``The seemingly instantaneous availability of information and entertainment via the Internet has created a new level of impatience that can drive away customers who don`t receive online information and entertainment as efficiently as they`d like,`` explains Robert Merlo, vice president of performance optimization marketing. ``This creates a problem for virtually all Web-based businesses as they deploy more sophisticated multimedia based sites.``

``Industry analysts anticipate the market for streaming media services to grow to $2.5 billion by the year 2004(a),`` Merlo continues. ``Our new Streaming Media Performance Monitoring service has been developed to enable our customers to more effectively monitor the presentation of streaming media and ensure clear, continuous and uninterrupted transmission quality.``

      Objective Measurement for Proactive Adjustments

Targeted at dot coms, ASPs, stream content producers, stream service providers and distributors and other organizations competing in online markets such as e-commerce, radio & television, music and distance learning, the Streaming Media Performance Monitoring service uses Data Collection Agents (DCAs) to emulate the media players that end users utilize and measure packet loss and jitter that can negatively affect stream performance.

Without this information, content developers and infrastructure providers have little means to gauge the quality of the streaming media they render and have little insight into the end user`s probable experience in the delivery of that content. When armed with the quantifiable and objective information provided by the Streaming Media Performance Monitoring service, proactive changes can be made to ensure end user satisfaction.

The globally deployed DCA network collects consistency, availability and performance information about streamed content served by third-party providers. The DCA network now covers North America, Europe, Asia and South America, and continues to expand based on changing Internet populations to continually provide an accurate, global representation of the end-user experience.

Supports Meaningful and Enforceable Performance SLAs

The capabilities offered by the Streaming Media Performance Monitoring services provide additional benefits to network systems administrators whose job it is to monitor the daily use, effectiveness and uptime of the company`s Web site.

The Streaming Media Performance Monitoring service allows network administrators to more effectively monitor streaming content and perform basic Internet network functions such as capacity planning. Finally, this new service provides the reporting necessary to support strategic business-level decisions regarding bandwidth, ISP and backbone performance, application server selection and other variables. Robust monitoring capabilities allow for multiple event triggers and notification lists -- based on level of performance degradation or improvement -- to be programmed into the service. These thresholds enable customers to develop an escalation process that alerts different points of contact based on different event triggers.

Exodus Doubles First Junk E-Bond Sale to $1.2 Billion
      By Nancy Leinfuss

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Junk bonds have found the Internet.

Web hosting firm Exodus Communications Inc. (NasdaqNM:EXDS - news) on Wednesday became the first company ever to sell junk bonds online. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company doubled its sale to nearly $1.2 billion to fund its expansion.

``We upsized the deal significantly, we got an incredible amount of demand both in Europe and in the U.S., especially for the dollar portion, as high-yield mutual funds had some cash to advance,`` said Joe McGrath, managing director of high-yield capital markets at Goldman Sachs & Co, who managed the sale with Merrill Lynch & Co.

Goldman Sachs, which has handled so-called ``e-bond`` sales for investment-grade companies in the past, said 70 percent of investors worldwide used its proprietary Web-based product to learn about the sale and place orders.

``The delivery mechanism of the Internet sale is very good,`` said McGrath. ``This is definitely going to be the wave of the future.`` Exodus originally planned to sell just $600 million of dollar- and euro-denominated notes, and completed its sale following two-day road shows in Europe and the United States.

``Obviously, mutual funds know and like the Exodus name, and weighed in for some big size,`` McGrath said.

U.S. junk-bond mutual funds, whose assets total about $95 billion, have enjoyed three consecutive weeks of cash inflows, totaling $1.09 billion, for the first time this year. Fund flows are often considered a good indicator of sentiment for junk bonds, and the positive flows may have helped Exodus complete its sale.

It wasn`t just mutual fund managers buying Exodus`s bonds, though. While fund managers were the largest buyers, insurance companies and collateralized bond obligations (CBOs) weighed in as well, McGrath said.

Exodus sold $1.0 billion in 11.625 percent 10-year notes at par to yield 553.5 basis points more than comparable maturity U.S. Treasuries.

It also sold 200 million euro ($188 million) of 11.375 percent eight-year notes at par to yield 617.5 basis points more than German bunds. The maturity of the euro portion was cut from 10 years to meet investor demand.

``Eight-year bullets was the security that quite frankly a lot of European investors wanted to buy,`` said McGrath. ``It also related to U.S. investors buying the European tranche, and allowed them to swap back into U.S. dollars easily.``

Standard & Poor`s rated the notes single-B, its fifth highest junk grade. Moody`s Investors Service has yet to rate the notes.

Exodus said in a statement it expects to use proceeds to make acquisitions for its system and network management business.

Exodus habe etwa 6,6 Mrd. Dollar in eigenen Aktien zuletzt geboten, was einer 18-prozentigen Beteiligung an Exodus entspräche.
