nur so eine Frage: Meines Wissens entwickelt die s.-t. box für AOL nicht Boca, sondern gateway. Anderen Infos zur Folge soll eine spezielles Linux darauf laufen. Von JNT war bisher nie die Rede. Verstehe also nicht, wo der Bezug her kommt. In dem zitierten Text steht auch nichts von Boca.
BOCI hat die Box entwickelt Philips baut sie.

America Online leads the way, as network service providers
shape the design of a range of information appliances
By Tam Harbert
"You`ve got mail." If
America Online Inc.,
Dulles, VA, has its way,
consumers will soon hear
its well-known tagline not
only from their PCs, but
also from their phones,
their organizers, their TVs
and—who
knows—maybe even
from their ovens.
As part of its "AOL
Anywhere" strategy, the
company aims to make
AOL available on
"televisions, wireless
telephones, hand-held or pocket devices, online appliances and smart
phones," according to its annual report. "We`re going to play a major role
in this next generation of non-PC connected appliances," Barry Schuler,
AOL`s president for interactive services, declared last spring.
To that end, AOL has forged a slew of alliances with hardware makers
over the last seven months. The deluge of partnerhips brought the truth
home to OEMs in a hurry: The network is now the major driver of
electronics hardware, which makes the network service provider the
dictator of hardware design. While AOL is the biggest and best example
of a network provider dictating hardware design, such pairings between
OEMs and network providers are happening all over the industry.
"Almost every major ISP is looking at the Internet appliance space, trying to figure out how to get
into it," says Larry Light, chief technical officer at Boca Research Inc., Boca Raton, FL, which is
providing the set-top box design for AOL TV. ISPs are looking for ways to grow their
penetration of consumer households.
What`s more, ISP influence is spreading well beyond the OEM. Chip makers also are working
closely with AOL, other ISPs, content providers and appliance makers to adapt chip designs to
network-dependent applications.
AOL`s expansion efforts
It started last summer. In May, AOL teamed with DirecTV Inc., Los Angeles; Hughes Network
Systems, Germantown, MD; Philips Electronics NV and Network Computer Inc. (now called
Liberate Technology Inc.) Redwood Shores, CA, to develop AOL TV, including designing the
AOL TV set-top box.

hier eine andere Pressemeldung:
By Reshma Kapadia
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Internet media giant America Online Inc. (NYSE:AOL - news) should not expect its AOLTV service to make a huge splash at its launch
later this month, analysts said, but long-term prospects are better for AOLTV, which will enable users to chat online while watching their favorite TV shows.
A grand vision of interactive television has created chatter for years, but no provider has yet hit upon the right mix to draw the masses. Analysts do not expect the
long-awaited launch of AOLTV to fit the bill either -- at least in its initial phases -- but they do see some promise.
``AOLTV will be a success over time,`` Merrill Lynch Internet analyst Henry Blodget said at a press briefing last week. ``It probably won`t be immediately
successful.``
Several analysts said the Internet giant was not making a big hoopla over the first phase of its plans to marry television with the
Internet, which will expand programming choices exponentially.
The union of the Internet and television is seen as a foreshadowing of things to come once the merger of AOL and media giant Time
Warner Inc.(NYSE:TWX - news), which is currently valued at $123.2 billion and is expected to be completed in the fall, analysts
said, citing the possibility of original programming for the service in the future.
``It`s an unproven product and depends on how it`s perceived in the market. It feels like it`s a bit of a soft launch and they are managing expectations for it,`` said
Susan White, analyst at J.P. Morgan, noting that it takes a while to educate users. ``If demand exceeds expectations, it could be positive for the stock but the
company has played down the launch.``
The service is expected to be marketed to the Internet media giant`s existing customers on a premium to basic service. It will enable users to ``chat,`` check e-mail
and surf the Web via a wireless keyboard or a remote.
``AOLTV is taking its five most popular features of AOL plus the most popular satellite feature (programming guide),`` said Salomon Smith Barney analyst Lanny
Baker, who was excited about the product.
It will use a cable-like box and run on a platform created by Liberate Technologies Inc. (NasdaqNM:LBRT - news) The TV signal will remain on screen even as
the user focuses on Internet services.
Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) made its foray into interactive television with its purchase of WebTV. Its subscribers have plateaued at one million.
Analysts said AOLTV will have to offer something different to be successful.
``If you ask me, I think WebTV has proven that the market for separate set-top boxes that does nothing to deliver the Internet is small,`` said Forrester analyst Josh
Bernoff. ``It`s (AOLTV) a step in the right direction. When they integrate (it) into other devices, there`s a lot more potential because then you don`t have to buy a
separate box.``
He does not see it doing much for interactive TV in its first phase. But he said AOL TV will be attractive over time if it enables Internet access via cable networks,
which its pending merger with Time Warner would allow.
``Potentially more important than a stand-alone profit dynamic is the role the product can play with AOL`s expanding relationship with cable operators,`` said John
Schreiber, assistant portfolio manager at Janus Fund in Denver. ``I wouldn`t be surprised to see AOLTV play a role in partnerships with AOL and various cable
providers.``
He noted that the AOL and Time Warner merger, announced in January, helped fill a weakness AOL`s in overall strategy by giving it a means to provide
high-speed Internet access. Its partnership with the media giant is seen as expanding the opportunities for AOLTV.
``The Time Warner merger solved this in part and if they can expand this presence to other cable operator territories it will eliminate any and all weakness once and
for all. AOL TV has the potential to aid them in rolling out those (initiatives),`` Schreiber said.
Some analysts said AOL`s famous knack for sensing popular uses of the Internet for mainstream customers would fare well for the new service. Analysts said they
imagined communities of users chatting around popular shows.
``What (AOL) has going for is its brand extension. It means they don`t have to explain AOL and can take its services, such as chat or instant messaging, on to
another screen and could be watching `Dawson`s Creek` and chatting,`` said Gary Arlen, president of Arlen Communications, a media research firm.
``I am excited about it because they are realistic in their goals in phase one,`` said David Card, analyst at Jupiter Communications, noting the instant messaging
feature AOLTV will offer. ``They have cash and resources to experiment.`` He added that AOL has the cash and resources to experiment, as well as an installed
subscriber base that has responded to marketing.
``I am excited because if they have modest success, it will drive this thing (interactive TV) forward. AOL TV has got to help deliver TV. If it`s optimized to do Web
stuff at the expense of TV, it will fail.``
"It will use a cable-like box and run on a platform created by Liberate Technologies Inc. (NasdaqNM:LBRT - news)"

Aha - danke !!

AOL-Boca-Meldung?
