Commerce One Falls on Sales Rumor
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shares of Commerce One Inc. (NasdaqNM:CMRC - news) fell 18 percent on Friday on rumors of possible sales weakness after the business-to-business software company distributed an internal memo to encourage its sales force, brokerage sources said.
Shares in the Pleasanton, Calif.-based company fell $9-1/2 to $43-13/16 in heavy trade, making it one of the biggest percentage losers on Nasdaq.
J.P Morgan analyst William Epifanio said the company`s management reassured him that the memo was part of ordinary end-of-year incentives to the sales force.
``This is totally ordinary; this was completely overblown,`` he said. ``They are halfway through the quarter, and the bottom line is they are doing just fine. We spoke with management today.``
Commerce One was not immediately available for comment.

Scheint auch schon wieder aufwärts zu gehen, schaut fast so aus als wie der billigste Zeitpunkt schon wieder vorbei ist. Gut das ich meine Calls aufgestockt habe!
Auch ich habe kräftig nachgelegt. Bin mir bei diesem Zockerpapier aber nicht mehr ganz so sicher. Da ich aber die Kohle in diesem Jahr nicht mehr brauche, habe ich erneut investiert.
Man muß aber bei Commerce On einen langen Atem haben.
Will mal sehen, wie es nach Ernennung des neuen Präsidenten aussieht.

Commerce One official denies rumors of weak sales
NEW YORK, Nov 17 (Reuters) - The head of investor relations of Commerce One Inc. (NasdaqNM:CMRC - news) said on Friday that a memo sent to sales representatives to encourage them was routine, and said the company categorically denied rumors that the company was feeling any weakness in sales.
``These were motivational materials routinely promulgated amongst the sales force,`` said John Biestman. ``Apparently someone with some measure of influence misconstrued the meaning of the memo. We categorically deny the rumors.``
The business-to-business software company`s shares fell as much as 18 percent on the rumors on Friday morning. Biestman said the company reiterates the guidance given to investors during its third-quarter earnings report.
``We reassert our guidance for the fourth quarter we gave during our third-quarter earnings release,`` he said. "That is for fourth-quarter 2000 revenue in a range of between $173 million and $177 million.
He added that the company also stands behind the recent guidance for a fourth-quarter range of an operating loss of $13 million to a loss of $15 million, and a fourth-quarter loss of 7 cents per share.
