Die Wahl – Stimmen aus dem Ausland

Zur Abwechslung ein paar Kommentare zur Wahl aus dem Ausland:

      Quelle: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/talking_point/2270430.stm

Poll results in Germany are on a knife-edge with both sides claiming victory.
Gerhard Schroeder may scrape back into power, but with the slimmest of majorities.
It was Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder`s confident handling of the flood crisis earlier this year that probably did most to bring about the SPD`s recovery in the polls.
The personalities of the two main candidates, Gerhard Schroeder, and his Bavarian challenger, Edmund Stoiber has also been an issue in the election campaign.
The Greens have made strong gains - attributed to charismatic Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer.
The Liberals (FDP) suffered after an anti-semitism row sparked by Juergen Moellemann.
What is your reaction to the German election result?

It seems that Stoiber is the candidate with the soundest instincts on economic policy, but will he see the necessary reforms through? Four years ago Schroeder came in as fresh breath of air, but in reality litle happened. I think Stoiber should be given the benefit of the doubt.
      Peter Oheman, Germany

I suspect that Schroeder not only represents the European sentiment but a global one. The real difference is that he has the courage to articulate that sentiment in pretty unequivocal terms, rather than dancing around the issue
      Philippe Deniger, Canada

Schroeder is a weak leader - just what is needed to reduce german dominance in europe.
      edward sansom,

Schröder deserves a second chance in governing Germany. Four years aren`t enough to establish a diffent style in dealing with our economic problems.
      Willy, Germany

What about the unemployed in Germany. Shroeder has failed to fulfill his promises to his electorate.
      Edwin, Britain

While pressing issues such as curbing immigration, improving the economy, and maintaining strong ties with its allies during these troubled times should be at the forefront of peoples` minds, they are distracted by Schroeder`s anti-US, anti-West jibberish. Hopefully the sensible choice, Stoiber, will prevail.

      Eric Lamb, US
If Schroeder really won he is up for a very difficult period in Germany`s relation with the US. Being a spineless creature that he is we will probably see him back pedalling as hard as he can and issueing new apologies for embarrasing pronouncements by his cronies.

      Mirek Kondracki, USA
A victory for Gerhard Schroeder would be a big help for those of us in the US opposed to the war plans of the extreme right-wing Bush regime. Those who disagree with the government are not getting any media coverage, at best. We need the help of leaders in Germany, Canada and other Democracies to resist this spiral into war and destruction.
      Robert, U.S
      .

Schröder is leading the way for all of Europe. He`s saying what most Europeans want to hear, even if not all of their leaders have the courage to do the same. Finally, someone who dares to take a firm public stand against George Bush and his disastrous war plans.
      Drew, Belgium

Please do not confuse not liking President Bush´s foreign policy with not liking the US. European economies are just surviving. A war in the Gulf, or even just the threat of war isn`t going to help us get back into shape.
      Gerhard, Germany

I wonder if Schroeder will be singing the same tune if the US moves its military bases out of Germany and into Poland and the Czech Republic, where the locals appreciate what the US has done for them.
      Brett, USA

Does everything have to come down to an American vs anti-American case? Why can`t the Germans vote based on German policies. Do you think we vote for a president because of what he says about Germany????
      Shannon, USA

My great-uncle was a crewman flying relief flights during the Berlin crisis. He told me that when he was done flying for the day he wept from being so tired. He also told me it was the best thing he had ever done in his life and that the German people were good people who shouldn`t have to live under another dictatorship. I`m glad he is not alive today to see some man try to hold on to one of the most important jobs in the world by trashing my country .
      David Frey, USA

I do not see a great difference between Schroeder and Stoiber - they are both anti-American. The only difference is that Schroeder (and his foreign minister!) proclaims his hate for America, Stoiber doesn`t.
      Steve, Italy

I don`t know who would be best for Germany, and even if I did I certainly wouldn`t tell them. I would prefer it if Schroeder is elected as he would be good for the UK. His anti-American rhetoric will only serve to alienate Washington and consolidate our position as the US`s only real ally in the EU.
      Michael Lakey, UK

Edmund Stoiber has a better business head than Gerhard Schröder, and would no doubt be prepared to launch the comprehensive overhaul that many people think the German economy needs. But that`s about as far as it goes. He is otherwise even less inspiring and likeable than Schroeder, who at least shows a few human faults now and again.
      Michael, Germany

As an American I feel Schroeder is the best choice. Believe me not all Americans support George Bush and his right of centre politics. Germany and the EU should do what`s in their best interest!
      Sid, USA

Schroeder seems to represent what many Americans fear and resent about a leftist Europe. Not only is he damaging Germany`s reputation here, but Europe as a whole. With both Germany and France taking up seemingly reflexive anti-American attitudes, the EU will hardly be a factor in US policy decisions (ever notice the more they howl, the less we listen?)
      Dan, US

To Dan US: It`s a novel concept, but the German Chancellor is there to represent German interests - whether the US agrees or not doesn`t really matter.
      Nick, UK

What is all this about anti-Americanism? Schroeder is simply using his brains instead of following George Bush blindly. Friendship does not necessitate sharing the same opinion all the time. The man has my vote, because of he acts intelligently and keeps a cool head.
      Daniela, Germany

Schroeder should be rewarded for his brave and principled objection to Gulf War II. As a Berlin resident and long-time environmentalist, I hope the Red-Green coalition remains in power here.
      Nick Fraser, Berlin, Germany

Both candidates promise to renew Germany`s economy - but both concepts will fail unless the German companies and employees stop relying on the government anyway. There is still was too much red tape and security thinking involved.
      Dieter Mueller, Germany

The last thing Europe needs is another right-wing government. Hopefully Stoiber will join William Hague and Ian Duncan Smith on the list of conservative "also-rans" of the 21st century.
      Andrew, Germany
I think the Chancellor has done enough to retain the post. He should however restrain the Greens for economic growth to materialise.
      B.K. Goka, Ghana

In an attempt to get votes Schroeder has damaged the reputation of Germany for many years to come. For Germany to be taken seriously again it needs to send him back to private life where he belongs.
      Court Wilson, USA

I don¿t see how Schroeder can be accused of taking a particular standpoint in order to get votes. The majority of Germans are against a war and I think it is correct to represent the wishes of the people. If this also means you get more votes, isnt that the way politics work?
      Sara, Germany

Gerhard Schroeder has used anti-American feeling in Germany for his own gain, then he turns around and accuses Stoiber of stirring up anti-foreigner attitudes. This blatant hypocrisy should not be rewarded.
      Darryn, New Zealand

I would trust whoever listened to the people, and in this case it seems to be Gerhard Schroeder. His anti-US stance is refreshing, and his political will strong.
      Peter Finch, England

Anybody that resists America`s attempt to start a new world war gets my vote.
      Thorsten, Germany

I think Gerhard Schroeder is using the Anti-American tide to get votes - let`s see what he says after the elections?
      Eric, Belgium (UK citizen)

      In pictures: Germany`s cliffhanger poll
In the nailbiting finish to the polling day, both sides in Germany`s general election have been claiming victory, as early results suggest the election is too close to call.

Both conservatives and the Social Democrats celebrated victory after the early results were made public

...supporters of the two rival camps were also in party mood

But the Greens` strong performance may well mean that Mr Schroeder will stay in office for another term

...and the party supporters were ecstatic ( sehen so typische GRÜNE aus?!?)

...but it was a bad day for Mr Stoiber`s potential allies - the liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP)

Earlier, people wore their traditional regional costumes as they voted in Bavaria...

...and in the Black Forest (...sowas darf natürlich nicht fehlen)

In traditionally Sorbian regions in the East, polling stations were bilingual

After the Sunday morning service and prayers, nuns hurried up to cast their votes

Die Hervorhebungen und Kommentare sind übrigens von mir.

Ich hoffe, daß die meisten morgen ohne Kater pünktlich und hochmotiviert am Arbeitsplatz erscheinen.

Es gibt noch viel zu tun!
