Interview: Spyglass Sees
Future In Broadcast
Three years ago, Spyglass nearly became a footnote
to Net history. In mid-1997, the browser developer`s
revenue shriveled after its licensing deal with Micro
soft ended, and Spy glass (www.spyglass.com) was
forced to rebuild itself around providing Internet
software for information appliances. Spyglass now is
a first-string technology player in two hot market
segments — wireless information devices and
interactive television — with customers that include
Motorola, Nokia, Sony and Toshiba. Senior Writer
Todd Spangler spoke recently with Doug Colbeth,
chief executive of Spyglass.
Describe what Spyglass does.
We provide strategic consulting, software and
professional services to the world`s leading
companies so they can leverage the economic
potential of the Internet.
How much of your revenue is from professional
services?
About half of our business is licensing and half is
services. The big difference between the information
appliance market and the PC market is that nothing is
shrink-wrapped — there`s a tremendous amount of
engineering work and systems integration to get that
technology into the product or service. You have to
have a services-intensive approach. It`s not a
product-only model.
What are your key technology assets?
We have a range [of technologies], from the Device
Mosaic embedded browser and embedded mail
applications to microservers that sit inside the device.
That`s about half of our total software revenue. On
the server side, we have an interesting
content-delivery system called Prism. Prism is really
important for wireless networks because it enhances
the overall performance of the network. Prism does
all the repurposing of that content for you.
Sun Microsystems and Oracle recently
introduced wireless content servers. How does
Prism compare?
Oracle`s Portal-To-Go is really designed for Oracle
databases. But there are a lot of other databases out
there. We`re database-agnostic. We`re also operating
system-agnostic, which Sun isn`t. We`re doing a
Linux version of Prism.
What about Phone.com?
Phone.com has some conversion capability with [its]
gateway server, but it only does HDML [Handheld
Device Mark up Language]. No one else is taking the
complete industry view. We don`t care what platform
it`s on, what language it`s formatted with or what
transport protocol it runs on. We`re more
components, whereas [Phone.com] provides a
platform.
Why aren`t you getting the stock valuation that
Phone.com is?
They`re newly minted. Any company that went public
in the last six months has a great valuation — look at
Red Hat. We`re the gal who`s been on the block for a
few years. We`re a fallen angel. Our stock went to $4
when Microsoft decided to give away all its Web
technology in 1996.
On the browser front, who`s the competition?
The biggest threat we see is the operating system
vendor — Microsoft — but they have the footprint
problem. There were some others, but they seem to
be dropping out of the race. You can`t run a business
as a browser company; you have to have services
and systems integration. We`re a lot more than a
browser company.
Why did you decide to sell Surf Watch
[Spyglass` filtering software division, sold in
September 1999 to JSB Software
Technologies]?
It`s a PC-based service, and we`re focused 100
percent on the information appliance business. And
that transaction [worth a total of $100 million to
Spyglass] was good for our balance sheet.
What`s next for Spyglass?
You`re going to see us develop software for
interactive appli ca tions for television. Today, you
have broadcast information and Web pages. Well,
you need to marry that up a lot better. In some cases,
we may create new entities to do this — you`ll see
joint ventures. Content is key, and we may invest in
those kinds of companies. The most important thing
right now is to be very aggressive, because the
markets are really opening up. Mobile data didn`t
even exist three years ago. Neither did interactive
TV. There`s now validation that these markets are
real.

Hallo Spyglass-Interessenten,

Hallo PBR, woher deine Info?

unteren bollinger band, was kurserhöhung bedeuten kann; außerdem
hindeutet. hoffentlich richtung norden.

Spyglass and Mitsui Enter into Reseller Agreement
for Spyglass Prism Content Delivery and
Transformation Platform
Leading Japanese Service Provider Teams up with Spyglass to Expand Internet Solution Business
in Japanese Market
NAPERVILLE, Ill. and TOKYO, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Internet pioneer Spyglass Inc. (Nasdaq: SPYG - news) and
Mitsui & Co. Ltd. announced today they have signed a reseller agreement under which Mitsui will sell the Spyglass Prism
content delivery and transformation platform in the Japanese market.
As the market for information appliances continues to emerge, delivering and managing Web content for these devices is
becoming an increasing challenge. Because information appliances vary in terms of display capabilities, processing power, and
communications speed, richly formatted content designed for PCs may be awkward to display and slow to download. Spyglass
Prism is a server-based solution designed to meet this challenge.
Spyglass Prism automatically converts, optimizes and transmits Web-based content, created for PCs in the standard HTML
format, to devices such as cellular phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs). Carriers, Internet service providers (ISPs)
and content providers can use Spyglass Prism to provide Web content at high-speed and low-cost to any device, including
cellular phones equipped for i-mode or cdmaOne, without having to separately convert the content for each type of device.
Spyglass Japan Country Manager Noriyuki Nihira, explains, ``Spyglass Prism is a server application that supports readily
available Web browsers in the market. Combined with the Inktomi TrafficServer, Spyglass Prism can be used to offer new
Internet access service solutions for all kinds of information devices. At the same time, sales through our new distributor, Mitsui,
a pioneer of Japan`s Internet field, will create opportunities for us to provide localization and other customer-support services,
thereby significantly expanding our Japanese market.``
Mitsui will provide Spyglass Prism as application software via the Inktomi TrafficServer, a cache server product, and sell it to
affiliated sales companies, carriers, ISPs, and content providers.
``By using the technology developed by Spyglass, our customers will be able to provide content optimized for a variety of
devices, thereby enabling them to offer a wider variety of content to their customers,`` said Mr. Sosuke Tsuchiya, general
manager of Mitsui & Co.`s Solution Business Division. ``Our partnership with Spyglass will enable us to more actively market
Internet access solutions for many different devices.``
Mitsui, Japan`s largest service provider and biggest investor in the information technology field (IT), has holdings in leading IT
companies such as Nihon Unisys, Adam Net and AOL Japan. It recently announced its participation in a new venture, dubbed
7dream.com, which will create one of Japan`s largest markets for e-commerce. Other partners in the venture include major
players such as NEC, Sony, JTB and Seven-Eleven Japan.

Hallo Spyglass Fans,
meine Prognose vom 23.2. scheint exakt aufzugehen. Fundamental total unterbewertet (limitiert ordern). Viele Grüße PBR
